| title | Immigration & Islamophobia |
| body | Hi all, today I want to talk about my take on these 2 topics plaguing many countries in the world. It seems the more affluent a country is, the more these topics affect her. First of all, a disclaimer, I live in a multi-racial and multi-religious society. And inevitably, I have made some Muslim friends. Also, this is purely my view on what is going on. So now that you have a chance to see where my biases, if any, come from, let’s start with the discussion proper. Islamophobia means phobia of followers of Islam. It means fear of Muslims or anyone having anything to do with the religion in general. Funny thing is this was never a word till extremists started creating havoc around the world. Immigration is the movement of people – usually permanently – to “greener pastures” in search of a better future. It can happen for a multitude of reasons. It can be in the form of push factors such as poverty and war, or pull factors such as high income prospect and political stability. Or some combination of both. So, what’s the relationship between these 2 topics? If one has been following the news recently, one would see the articles of immigration policies being a hot debate amongst politicians in the states and in Europe. Granted in America, it is not immigration, but rather a sort of face control at the gates, we shall assume them to be something similar for now as the main reasons for those “foreign aliens” being in America in the first place fits the definition of immigration. Why? These countries and states have been struggling with increased death toll due to terrorism. And who claims responsibility of these attacks? You guessed it…the Islamic State (IS). Why does this group called IS want to hand down such inhumane acts upon fellow humans? They proclaim it is to create an Islamic caliphate. They want a world where everyone worships their God. They claim that they are trying to save the world by ridding it of non-believers. So they will wage a holy war on the world by infiltrating the world and unseating their governments. Would anyone in right mind believe that their God would want them to kill all who don’t share the same God? Well, I didn’t want to assume, so I asked my Muslim friends just to be sure. That’s weird, their Quran didn’t seem to share the same ideals as this IS group. The answer I got from them was that the IS was misquoting the Quran and taking certain texts out of context and twisting the meaning for their convenience. Think about this: roughly 29% of the world’s population is Muslim. If the religion was that violent, wouldn’t we have had world war 3 long time ago? Why are there only acts of violence here and there every few days? Also, anyone notice that the violence only happens in more affluent countries? Did they try infiltrating poorer countries like Somalia or Senegal? So how did this group of people have so many followers who are willing to give up their lives for the famed 40 virgins (for those not in the know, it means to die a martyr)? We realise that Muslim-majority countries struggling with a war on IS usually have one thing in common. They either had their leaders toppled with help from America and Europe or are in the process of doing so. And since neither America nor Europe had a person in mind to put in power after the toppling of the leader, this leaves a power vacuum. This power vacuum attracts opposing factions like bees to honey. Suddenly everyone wants to be in power. What better time to gain popularity than now, when the country is in shambles and the Muslim-majority population is starving, homeless and desperate? Propose a holy war on the people who caused the problem in our country! Is it any surprise they got so many loyal followers? So these loyal followers sneak into other countries through the guise of immigration together with others who have a genuine intention of settling down in the receiving country to start an honest life. And the first reaction by governments is to restrict acceptance of immigrants or have face control at the borders and airports. A blanket policy that also robs industries of manpower they need to run their business operations. But it is as ridiculous as saying “fire can burn, so we should ban the use of fire.” Oh yeah? Try going without heat or fire for a week. Are you going to eat salads and canned meats all day? How about clean water? Winter time? The religion has been wrongly demonised and it is affecting Muslims all over the world. I was recently at a mosque to celebrate the break of fast. The leader of the mosque shared with me the reason they fast, and even invited me over to sit with them and the congregation during the meal. Their religion is as peaceful as other religions are. It is the fault of an opportunistic lot of bad apples that gave them a bad reputation. As I’ve mentioned earlier, almost a third of the world population is Muslim. But as with all things journalism, peaceful news doesn’t sell. Would you read news of the majority of the Muslim population who are living honest lives in society? No. But when IS claims responsibility for something, it must be the Muslims, right? Where’s the sense in that? So that’s my rant on what I think about immigration being affected by Islamophobia. Let me know what you guys think. Thank you for reading my friends, and have a good day! |

| title | Why I never lose money on physical gold |
| body | Good day to all. Is it really possible never to lose money in the investment world? Well, yes! After all, the world of investing is a win-lose world right? And if you lose enough times, you will surely learn something right? Oh and you can learn from the best and don't reproduce their mistakes right? Wrong. Here's how I came up with my strategy for never losing a single cent on physical gold trading. To start off, gold is expensive. Don't believe me? Well, don't take my word for it, go to your nearest pawnshop and see how much they charge for just 10 grams of this yellow stuff. So do your research before you start buying or selling this. Right, now how long has this metal been around in history? Don't know? Or can't recall a time it WASN'T in history books? Alright alright, so it has been around since forever. What does that have to do with my formulation of my strategy? Simple. If it has been around for ages, and is still used in pretty much the same manner today as it was ages ago, then it is pretty much not going to be useless for the foreseeable future. I'm still sensing some clueless faces. Dude! So what if it is not going to be useless? How can I make money from it? Now, think of it this way, if it will still have value, then isn't it the case that its value is definitely not going to drop to 0? See where I am going? Unlike a stock, in which the underlying company can go bust and you essentially lose your entire capital, gold will not go to zero. So any price movement against your position is not an indication of doom and gloom. Moral of the story? Do your homework on what you want to invest in. Now, you're going to ask me, so gold will not drop to zero, now what? Next, just employ a simple strategy that works with all things that do not completely lose value: Dollar Cost Averaging or DCA. DCA basically means averaging out your cost. There are 2 types of DCA which people employ. Averaging by time versus averaging by cost. Averaging by time is the most commonly used way of averaging, also known as the "set it and leave it" way. What you do is you simply invest a fixed amount of money every time period into the metal. Over time, you will ride out the price fluctuations, and your average cost will go down. Then you "show hand" (sell all) when you want your money back. Averaging by cost means you average your cost in one direction - down. If the price goes to your favour, sell. If it goes against you, buy. This is slightly different in the sense that it is a shorter term play than averaging by time. If you DCA by time, you have to ride at least one downtrend before you are good to show hand. Whereas if you DCA by cost, you can show hand if you happened to catch the uptrend. Me personally? I DCA by cost. Like I mentioned earlier, gold is expensive. Buying in small amounts will see huge spreads, which prolongs the time taken to break even. So find a dealer that gives you a good spread and be on good terms with him. And buy enough that your spread is low. Buying 5 grams or 10 grams is not worth it. Start with 1 troy ounce. If your bank account has more numbers to the left of the decimal, try 100 grams or even kilobars. You get my point. The bigger you buy, the lower your spread. So that sums up my strategy for physical gold trading. It is commonly used on stock indices as well, especially the DCA by time. Thank you for reading my friends, and have a good day! |

"title": "Why I never lose money on physical gold",
"body": "Good day to all. Is it really possible never to lose money in the investment world? Well, yes! After all, the world of investing is a win-lose world right? And if you lose enough times, you will surely learn something right? Oh and you can learn from the best and don't reproduce their mistakes right? Wrong.\n\nHere's how I came up with my strategy for never losing a single cent on physical gold trading. To start off, gold is expensive. Don't believe me? Well, don't take my word for it, go to your nearest pawnshop and see how much they charge for just 10 grams of this yellow stuff. So do your research before you start buying or selling this.\n\nRight, now how long has this metal been around in history? Don't know? Or can't recall a time it WASN'T in history books? Alright alright, so it has been around since forever. What does that have to do with my formulation of my strategy? Simple. If it has been around for ages, and is still used in pretty much the same manner today as it was ages ago, then it is pretty much not going to be useless for the foreseeable future.\n\nI'm still sensing some clueless faces. \n\nNow, you're going to ask me, so gold will not drop to zero, now what? Next, just employ a simple strategy that works with all things that do not completely lose value: Dollar Cost Averaging or DCA. DCA basically means averaging out your cost. There are 2 types of DCA which people employ. Averaging by time versus averaging by cost.\n\nAveraging by time is the most commonly used way of averaging, also known as the \"set it and leave it\" way. What you do is you simply invest a fixed amount of money every time period into the metal. Over time, you will ride out the price fluctuations, and your average cost will go down. | title | A Reply: Why do some people hate Singapore? |
| body | As the title suggests, this is a reply to a post by Theodore Shawcross that seems to have created a stir in my hometown. Here's the link for those interested: https://www.quora.com/Why-do-some-people-hate-Singapore/answer/Theodore-Shawcross?ref=fb In summary, his post covers the following points: - education - racial equality - cost of living - cost of cars (oh this is a good one!); and - freedom of expression Education in Singapore, according to him, is world class. No doubt about that. Except one thing, all it does is force students to memorise facts at face value. Certain subjects are seen as more important than others, this starts as early as primary school (grade school). For example, during my time in secondary school, mathematics and the sciences were seen as prestigious, and those who did well in those were put in the "top" classes. Those who were strong in the humanities were lined up after the math and science classes. I don't believe any system that places biases on any subjects over other subjects produce a well balanced population. Our education system was designed to produce good workers for our colonial rulers in the past. We may have tweaked it here and there, but at its roots, it's pretty much the same. This needs to change, or all we produce will be good workers. I agree with him about racial equality here in Singapore. I won't fully agree for reasons only locals know and I cannot divulge here, but for the most part, what he said is true. We are multi-racial. Even though the Chinese make up more than 70% of the racial ethnicity here, they are not allowed to turn Singapore into mini-China outside China. For the most part, there is equal opportunity for all races in Singapore. Every time we celebrate National Day, we are reminded by our leaders of the importance of multiculturalism to the fabric that ties Singapore together. Furthermore, we have shown time and again that we stand up for each other, for example during the racial riots in 1964, and when our first prime minister passed away 2 years back. How did we do this? Start them young, schools are to have some racial ratio to adhere to, so if they mix together from young, they're more likely to continue into their adulthood. Cost of living is high in Singapore. Statistics do not lie. But just as in all countries, there are options for the poorer people in the nation. A meal may cost anywhere between S$2.50 ($1.81) to S$50.00 depending on where you eat. If S$2.50 is still too expensive, the other option is to prepare your own meals and bring them to work. With your meals, you can have 2 of 3 options: fast; nutritious; or cheap. Once can't have all three. Housing is not as affordable as the more rural parts of the states, but it is still relatively affordable with the government's various grants. Public housing starts at S$150,000 for the most basic one-room apartment. We do not have generous state welfare, so one has to fight to put a roof over one's head and food on the table. But it is not impossible if one is willing to sacrifice all luxury. Yes we do have quite an extreme rich-poor gap. Not as extreme as some of the more well-to-do countries, but we're getting there. How did this happen? One could say we're a victim of our own success. The more stable our country became and the lower the taxes, the more people started seeing our country as a good place to start business. Because of that, the bosses of many conglomerates sent their top executives here to expand their business. Would you expect them to live in poverty? Of course not! They would expect their standard of living to remain at status quo at the minimum. Since there is a market for luxury in this market, there would be businesses started to cater to these people. And guess what? The standard of living in the areas they congregate at would rise considerably. Some of this will inadvertently spill over to the rest of the economy. But don't forget, these are also the people paying the taxes, which in turn go to the government subsidies to help the poorer amongst us. Most locals actually pay negative taxes if you consider the net give and take between the government the person. The cost of owning a car here is probably one of the most expensive in this world. Theodore is correct on this point. Can't dispute him, though I would like to add a point. But first, what makes up the cost? The bulk of it comes from 2 things: Additional Registration Fee (ARF); and Certificate of Entitlement (COE). ARF is a 100%++ tax on the open market value of the car, and COE is the right to own a car, which is usually around S$47,000. Why the exorbitant amount you ask? First we got to think about the land size of Singapore. We are not big at only 719.1 square kilometres. The government's priority is to ensure that people can reach their destination in the shortest time possible. With a population this huge, having every family own a car is not the most optimal solution. If every family owned a car, our roads would be as congested as in Hong Kong. An efficient public transport is a more probable solution. And after visiting other countries, I will admit that we do have a very reliable public transport system. Freedom of expression is actually available in Singapore. Don't believe me? Try posting something against the government. When you click "post", it shows up on the internet, no? However, the government can also choose to sue you right? Freedom of expression goes both ways. I have the right not to get punched by a random thug on the street, but if he chooses to punch me, nobody can stop him. However, I also have the right to drag him to the cops to get arrested. Freedom of expression is really not something that the younger generation, or at least within my social sphere, is concerned about. I'm not sure how it even came up as something to hate the country for in his post. As for whether I hate my home country, no. While Singapore is not perfect, we have come a long way in correcting past mistakes and imperfections. No country is perfect. Pick the flaws that you can live with and suck it up. I may not have seen many countries in my brief time on earth, but of the few that I've seen, Singapore still ranks on top of them. Theodore may have his reasons for coming and it may be reasons that some locals will hate him for. But I have my reasons for wanting to stay here, at least for the time being. Do other Singaporeans hate Singapore? Not many of us do. Or the local population would be very much lower than it is now. There may be some things we complain about regularly, like COE prices, but on the whole, most of us are happy with the overall standard of living Singapore gives us. Thank you for reading my friends, and have a good day! |

"title": "A Reply: Why do some people hate Singapore?",
"body": "As the title suggests, this is a reply to a post by Theodore Shawcross that seems to have created a stir in my hometown. Here's the link for those interested: https://www.quora.com/Why-do-some-people-hate-Singapore/answer/Theodore-Shawcross?ref=fb\n\nIn summary, his post covers the following points:\n - education\n - racial equality\n - cost of living\n - cost of cars (oh this is a good one!); and\n - freedom of expression\n\nEducation in Singapore, according to him, is world class. No doubt about that. Except one thing, all it does is force students to memorise facts at face value. Certain subjects are seen as more important than others, this starts as early as primary school (grade school). For example, during my time in secondary school, mathematics and the sciences were seen as prestigious, and those who did well in those were put in the \"top\" classes. This needs to change, or all we produce will be good workers.\n\nI agree with him about racial equality here in Singapore. \n\nCost of living is high in Singapore. \n\nYes we do have quite an extreme rich-poor gap. Most locals actually pay negative taxes if you consider the net give and take between the government the person.\n\nThe cost of owning a car here is probably one of the most expensive in this world. \n\nFreedom of expression is actually available in Singapore. Don't believe me? Try posting something against the government. When you click \"post\", it shows up on the internet, no? However, the government can also choose to sue you right? Freedom of expression goes both ways. I have the right not to get punched by a random thug on the street, but if he chooses to punch me, nobody can stop him. However, I also have the right to drag him to the cops to get arrested. Freedom of expression is really not something that the younger generation, or at least within my social sphere, is concerned about. I'm not sure how it even came up as something to hate the country for in his post. \n\nAs for whether I hate my home country, no. While Singapore is not perfect, we have come a long way in correcting past mistakes and imperfections. No country is perfect. Pick the flaws that you can live with and suck it up. | title | Introduction |
| body | Good day to all. As at 28 May 2017, my age stands at 28. I live in Singapore, a tiny republic smaller than the size of New York city. She holds roughly 5.6 million people (as at 2016), of which 3.4 million are citizens, 0.5 million are Permanent Residents (resident aliens for you American folks) and 1.7 million are foreigners (non-resident aliens). My hobbies include playing the guitar, watching anime and having a drink with close friends. Some people will put exercise in this list, but I don't enjoy my workouts. I currently workout 5 times a week. It stresses my body, leaves me gasping for air when I'm done, and generally makes me tired. That said, I still work out to be the best version of myself and keep my body strong. That's it for my short introduction. Have a good day all! |
