      "body": "missile attack in Syria's northern region has killed 26 pro-government fighters, mostly Iranians, a Syria war monitoring group said Monday.\n\nThe Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the late Sunday night attack appears to have been carried out by Israel and targeted an arms depot for surface-to-surface missiles at a base in northern Syria known as Brigade 47. The Observatory said four Syrians were also among casualties.\n\nIt said the death toll could rise as the attack also wounded 60 fighters and there were several others are still missing.\n\nThere was no immediate comment from Israel.\n\nThe attack comes amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel following an airstrike earlier this month on Syria's T4 air base in central province of Homs that killed seven Iranian military personnel. Tehran threatened to retaliate for the T4 attack.\n\nSyria, Iran and Russia blamed Israel for that T4 attack. Israel did not confirm or deny it.\n\nIsrael Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in an interview published last Thursday that his country will strike Tehran if attacked by archenemy Iran, escalating an already tense war of words between the two adversaries.\n\nTehran has sent thousands of Iran-backed fighters to back President Bashar Assad's forces in the country's seven-year civil war.\n\nIranian state television, citing Syrian media, reported the attack. The semi-official ISNA news agency, citing \"local sources and activists,\" said the strike killed 18 Iranians, including a commander, in a suburb of the central city of Hama.\n\nThe missiles targeted buildings and centers which likely include a weapons depot, ISNA reported.\n\nIran's semi-official Tasnim news agency on Monday quoted chief of Fatimayoun Brigade, an Iran-backed Afghan militia in Syria fighting alongside Iranian forces, as saying their base near Aleppo was not targeted during the strikes and they had no casualties. It did not elaborate.\n\nEarlier on Monday, Syrian TV reported a \"new aggression,\" with missiles targeting military outposts in northern Syria. The state-run television reported that the missiles targeted several military positions before midnight Sunday outposts in the Hama and Aleppo countryside.\n\nLebanon's Al-Akhbar daily, that is considered close to the militant Hezbollah group and the Syrian government said the attack targeted \"important arms depots used by the (Syrian) army and Iran's Revolutionary Guards.\" It said that missiles used in the attack appear to have been bunker buster.\n\nSyria-based opposition media activist Mohamad Rasheed said that base that came under attack is about 10 kilometers (7 miles) outside the city of Hama adding that airstrike led to several explosions in the arms depot. He added that the area is known as the Maarin Mountain or Mountain 47.\n\nRasheed said that some of the exploding missiles in the arms depot struck parts of Hama adding that residents in areas near the base fled their homes.       "body": "North Korean leader Kim Jong-un today made history by stepping over the border to meet South Korean President Moon Jae-in. For two countries that haven't shared a great friendship in the past, this was a big moment.\n\nAt this historic summit, the two leaders of North and South Korea signed a declaration agreeing to work for the \"complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula\".\n\nThe two Korean leaders announced that they would seek an agreement to establish \"permanent\" and \"solid\" peace on the peninsula, and seek multilateral talks with other countries such as the United States.\nAlong with that, the agreement also seeks to declare a formal end to the Korean War later this year.\n\nSo, what would that mean? Well, we'll have to go back in time a little to understand that.\n\nTHE START OF THE KOREAN WAR\n\nA China and Soviet Union-backed North Korea started a war with the US-supported South Korea in June 1950. Freshly divided into two governments, North and South Korea soon brought much hostility into the war, and a lot went down.\n\nEventually, however, an armistice was signed and the fight came to an end in July 1953. The armistice brought about the need of a border, which, in turn, gave birth to Korean Demilitarized Zone (KDZ); the no man's land that divides North and South Korea.\n\nBut while the battle had ended, the war was far from being over.\n\nA TRUCE, BUT TO PEACE TREATY\n\nDespite the signing of the armistice, no treaty of peace was agreed upon by the two countries in 1953, or over the years.\n\nThis technically means that, for the last six decades, North and South Korea have officially been on a war, or, as experts would say, stuck in a frozen conflict.\n\nNow, with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in agreeing to sign a treaty to official end the Korean War, a lot could change for the two countries.\n\nWHAT ABOUT THE KDZ?\n\nThe Korean Demilitarized Zone (KDZ) was created to, figuratively speaking, to keep the two enemies at an arm's length (literally, the KDZ is around 4-km wide). In the declaration that Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in agreed upon today, however, included promises to turn their fortified border into a \"peace zone\".\n\nWould that mean an end of the KDZ?\n\nA report on Washington Post refers to Munhwa Ilbo, a South Korean newspaper, to say that the agreement could \"involve returning the demilitarized zone to its 'original state',\" which could mean a more \"traditional\" border would take its place.\n\nA Reuters report also says that the agreement signed by the two leaders says they would pursue \"military arms reduction\" and cease \"hostile acts\". So, maybe they are serious about this.\n\nWOULD THAT MEAN THEY ARE BUDDIES NOW?\n\nLet's just say there is still a long way North and South Korea will have to go before they become all chummy.\n\nWith the US in picture, and the much-awaited Kim-Trump meet around the corner, a lot regarding the two Korean nations' friendship depends on that balance.\n\nOn the plus side, the state of 'frozen conflict' between the two nations will come to an end when the war is officially ended.\n\nA frozen conflict, by definition, means that while armed combat between the fighting countries has stopped, it can start off any time as no official agreement has been signed to mark the end of the war. This leaves the countries involved in a state of constant insecurity.\n\nWith the treaty signed, citizen's fear of this frozen conflict thawing out any moment will at least fizz out.\n\nThe thing is, however, Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in have only just agreed to set \"complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula\" and officially ending the Korean War as GOALS. The actual treaty marking the end of the war is yet to be signed. If we really realized how much Jesus counts on us, and of the value of all we do for him, as small as it is, we would try all the harder to correspond to him with all our being.",

      "body": "Advent begins with a call to vigilance as reflected in the passage above. There are numerous Scripture passages that call us to this vigilance and anticipation of the Lord’s coming; these are only a few. Being vigilant means, also, that we are prepared. We are not caught off guard. Imagine if Christmas morning came and you woke up suddenly realizing that you forgot to prepare! Imagine if you had no gifts, no food purchased and no plans were made. Of course you wouldn’t allow that to happen, but we do sometimes allow it to happen spiritually speaking. We often are not prepared to celebrate the birth of Christ within our hearts.\n\nThe first week of Advent also offers the focus of the Second Coming of Christ. Jesus will return again, in all splendor and glory, to judge the living and the dead. We profess that fact every Sunday in our Creed. So, even though Advent is a time for the preparation of the celebration of the first coming of Jesus in the flesh, it is also a time to acknowledge that His first coming is ultimately fulfilled in His final glorious coming.\n\nAs Advent begins, reflect upon how ready you are for Jesus’ coming. Are you preparing for it with the same fervor that you prepare for Christmas through shopping, cooking, decorating, etc? Are you looking forward to that day when He will return? Are you preparing for the spiritual celebration of His birth?       "body": "The good news proclaimed by Jesus today (is this really good news?) seems at first glance a complete juxtaposition with the Jesus that both I and the premature Christmas music on local radio prefer to highlight at this time of year: the silent infant lying in a manger, the Prince of Peace, the embodiment of all that is calm and bright.\n\nWhile it is true that God is peaceful, slow to anger, and rich in mercy, what do we make of today's Gospel message? How do we cope with the inevitable conflict that comes with an authentic life of faith? How do we spiritually prepare for the possibility of religious persecution—and perhaps even martyrdom—that continue to pose a real threat to Christians around the world today?\n\nLegend tells us that while third-century martyr St. Lawrence was being burned to death on a giant grid-iron, he joked with the judge, “Turn me over, I'm done on this side!” When Saints Paul and Silas were in prison awaiting their deaths, they sang hymns of praise to God. When St. Maria Goretti was brutally assaulted and stabbed by her life-long neighbor, she forgave him on her death-bed. How did these saints and countless others respond with courage, gratitude, and joy in times of extreme suffering and death?\n\nLong before these saints sacrificed their lives for Christ, they chose to surrender their hearts to God's will in all things. In so doing, they opened their hearts to receive an abiding peace within, even in the midst of conflict, hostility, and impending death.\n\nFollowing Christ does not come with a promise of peace and harmony in this world. Even the most genuine and humble proclamation of Christ's love can lead to persecution—at times even from our closest of kin.
