[This is for you](http://bit.ly/2cqUF0q). ## A Note from the Legacy Lady Camping, for me, is quite simply my happy place. Growing up, we were camping, backpacking, hiking, and spending as much time as we could outside. Lucky for us we lived in Phoenix, AZ so we could be outside most of the year. Now as an adult in Western PA, I’ve had to adjust my expectations on how many days we can spend outside in a year. Camping and taking our kids outside is still a major priority and I am thankful my husband and I agree wholeheartedly on that point. Picking a favorite camping trip is nearly impossible. I’m going the sappy route and saying the trip I met my husband on when we were teenagers. That trip was pretty memorable. #### -Gael, the Legacy Lady |

I wrote a poem/outpouring of my memories which was shared at her funeral and I think brought some comfort to our family. Please share with anyone who may benefit now :) I also work with families who have experienced the death of a loved one and haven't created a memory book yet. Alzheimer's is a hard road to walk, for the person and the family. My family is on that journey right now with my grandparents. Hugs and light to your family. |

| body | This was originally posted on the [Legacy Recorder](http://www.thelegacyrecorder.com/eldercare/how-to-work-with-someone-to-tell-their-story-dealing-with-dementia-alzheimers-memory-loss) #blog [How to work with someone to tell their story when they have dementia, Alzheimer’s or another kind of memory loss](http://www.thelegacyrecorder.com/eldercare/how-to-work-with-someone-to-tell-their-story-dealing-with-dementia-alzheimers-memory-loss) [Audio Version](https://anchor.fm/legacyrecorder/embed/episodes/How-to-Work-with-Someone-to-Tell-Their-Story-Dealing-with-Dementia--Alzheimers---Memory-Loss-e1he93) Sometimes it can be hard to have, what we consider to be, **meaningful conversations** with someone who is experiencing #memoryloss. It may even seem silly to you to help someone tell their story when they are suffering from #Dementia or #Alzheimers. you may be thinking that you won’t be able to get the whole #story or, what really happened. *In the end, though, it’s about them.* Their recollections and perceptions admittedly may not accurately reflect the actual events, but what they know, remember, and feel now is equally as important and valid. It’s our job to help them remember what they can and put that into words or whatever medium makes them smile. Just the fact that you have taken the time to have the conversation with them is enough. ### What do they know and remember?
Depending on how advanced their case is, memory loss sufferers will remember different things at different times, and the details may also vary dramatically. That is why I suggest using some type of recording process, whether you actually record the conversation with a device or write notes down during or after. **Examples of questions to ask someone who still has some memories:** * What was your favorite [childhood memory](http://www.thelegacyrecorder.com/legacy-chat/march-23rd-legacychat-childhood-memory-you-either-love-or-love-to-hate)? * What was your favorite [Christmas memory](http://www.thelegacyrecorder.com/legacy-chat/december-22nd-legacychat-what-is-your-favorite-holiday-memory)? * What was your favorite summertime activity? These are simple questions that may tap into emotional memories that may trigger the actual memories. The hope is, through more detailed questions, you can have them paint a picture of the moment through words. ### What do they feel now?
Talking to them about how they are feeling right now is a great way to open up a conversation about other things that are affecting them. For instance, asking how they are doing will result in a short answer, but gives you the opportunity to ask a follow-up question like “why do you feel that way” or “what made you feel that way today”. These types of questions validate their feelings, empowers them to answer honestly, and potentially impacts their day to day life. * How are you doing today? * Why do you feel that way? * What made you feel that way? * Who made you feel that way? * What are you looking forward to today? * Why are you excited about it? * What would you like to do that would make your day better? Approaching the conversation this way gives you the opportunity to assess how they perceive their current state and what their life is like. Once you begin these types of conversations, you will find that it becomes easier and the person you are working with is more open with you. A relationship founded on dignity and mutual respect will give you and them a better quality of life. ### What is going on in their life currently? Someone experiencing memory loss will not have the same experience telling their story that someone who can remember their childhood will have. That does not discount or make the exercise less important. It does change the potential conversation topics. **Examples of what to ask:** * What is going on your life right now? * What makes you smile? * What would you like to do more of? * How do you feel about your day? * Who do you wish you could see more of? * Who makes you smile and why? * Would you like to learn something new? If yes, what would you like to learn? These questions will open up the chance for them to look forward and beyond their current living situation. Also, this kind of conversation empowers them to take ownership of their feelings and life in a way they might not have been able to before. ### Why does it matter? > When it really comes down to it, everyone has a story worth telling and we need to be there to hear it. Taking the time to have these conversations with people regardless of their cognitive ability is crucial to their quality of life. The simple act of sitting with someone and really listening to how they are doing is a simple way to make a huge impact. From my experience, I have seen families grow closer, and more, just by changing how they are talking with their loved one. The elder also may exhibit changes in behavior and a renewed interest in life. The benefits and the “whys” are endless. ### So, what’s the takeaway? > It’s not about you. It’s not about your expectations and what something should look like. > It’s about the person you are working with and their human experience. Happy Writing! The Legacy Lady |

| body | So it's been eight whole days already since my last confession... wait, post... here on #steemit. It's really kind of terrifying how my sense of time has been warped by my life experiences. I really thought it was only a few days ago that I made that first post. >*Time is a funny thing* #Photo by #AronVisuals on #Unsplash ### Living each moment like it's your last After someone dies or find out something awful could happen to someone you love, the minutes and hours are all of a sudden much more precious. I try to live each moment like it's my last with everyone. This might sound a little crazy, and it probably is, but that's where I'm at in life. Photo by [Simeon Muller](https://unsplash.com/@simeonmuller) on Unsplash My father died when I was a teenager, and my husband has an incurable condition that will eventually take his life. So my approach to life is **smiling, laughing, and living** the shit out of this one run I have with being with the people I love. As a result, each day feels like a lifetime. I'm young, energetic, and have a ridiculous drive to achieve the impossible. My dude, thankfully, is the same. We live our lives like there is no tomorrow and time is not on our side, because it isn't. It is the one resource that we can't * count on, * renew, * recycle, * or reuse. Once it's gone, that's it. Okay, so that's a lot of doom and gloom and huge problem without a solution in sight. *Except...* Here's the great part about this life we're living. We don't have to keep wasting it. We have the chance to make the choice to get off our asses and shake our lives up a bit. * Take the risk you've been avoiding, * Jump on the opportunity that keeps knocking at your door, * Give each moment the chance to be the best one yet. ### [My big risk](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3QZ69X) One of my big risks was starting a journey about 3 years ago to help people tell their life stories. On the face of it, it was simple and many people were doing it. What I found out was that there lacked a tool and support to do it well. *So, like any #entrepreneur worth their #salt... [I created that tool.](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3QZ69X)* [](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3QZ69X) And people have been using it. And it's amazing. The changes I see in the people I work with are breathtaking. The ones telling their stories and the ones who are helping them do it, all experience a change in themselves and begin to look at their world with a wider view. [Taking that risk to create that thing](http://www.thelegacyrecorder.com), has been worth every moment spent, tear, sob, and laugh along the way. ### What about you? Here is the hard part. I had to spend a lot of time thinking about all of this and owning up to that fact that lately, I've been kind of twiddling my thumbs on some things. I admitted to myself that I needed to get my "poop in a group". How do you feel about time? Does it move slow or fast? Do you feel like you are watching it swirl down an endless drain into an abyss of blackness? Why do you think you feel that way? And finally, what the heck are you going to do change? Let me know * how it goes, * what you think, * and your experiences in the comments :) |

We live our lives like there is no tomorrow and time is not on our side, because it isn't. \n\nIt is the one resource that we can't \n* count on, \n* renew, \n* recycle, \n* or reuse. \n\nOnce it's gone, that's it.\n\nOkay, so that's a lot of doom and gloom and huge problem without a solution in sight. \n\n*Except...*\n\nHere's the great part about this life we're living. We don't have to keep wasting it. We have the chance to make the choice to get off our asses and shake our lives up a bit. \n\n* Take the risk you've been avoiding, \n* Jump on the opportunity that keeps knocking at your door, \n* Give each moment the chance to be the best one yet.\n\n### [My big risk](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3QZ69X)\n\nOne of my big risks was starting a journey about 3 years ago to help people tell their life stories. On the face of it, it was simple and many people were doing it. What I found out was that there lacked a tool and support to do it well. \n\n*So, like any #entrepreneur worth their #salt... [I created that tool.](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3QZ69X)*\n\n[](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3QZ69X)\n\nAnd people have been using it. And it's amazing. The changes I see in the people I work with are breathtaking. The ones telling their stories and the ones who are helping them do it, all experience a change in themselves and begin to look at their world with a wider view. \n\n[Taking that risk to create that thing](http://www.thelegacyrecorder.com), has been worth every moment spent, tear, sob, and laugh along the way.\n\n### What about you?\nHere is the hard part. I had to spend a lot of time thinking about all of this and owning up to that fact that lately, I've been kind of twiddling my thumbs on some things. I admitted to myself that I needed to get my \"poop in a group\".\n\nHow do you feel about time? Does it move slow or fast? Do you feel like you are watching it swirl down an endless drain into an abyss of blackness? Why do you think you feel that way?\n\nAnd finally, what the heck are you going to do change?\n\nLet me know \n* how it goes, \n* what you think, \n* and your experiences \n\nin the comments :)",
