Recientemente culmine mis pasantías allí, soy auxiliar veterinario. Y aun asisto al zoológico como voluntariado, y la verdad estoy contenta pero a la vez muy triste. Creo que no es sorpresa para nadie que Venezuela está atravesando crisis en todos los sentidos, si no hay comida para abastecer a una ciudad imagínense que quedara para los animales que tienen toda su vida en el zoológico. \n\nNunca he estado de acuerdo con los zoológicos, siempre los he visto como cárceles para animales, \"animales pagando condenas que jamás cometieron\". Aunque este punto de vista ha cambiado un poco con el tiempo, ya que existen muchos zoológicos en los que los animales no viven en jaulas, encerrados, sufriendo de estrés, depresión y un sin fin de cosas no favorecedoras para ellos. Creo que lo más importante para un animal es su bienestar, su felicidad, su confort. Si el animal es feliz, todo está bien. Ahora, como sabemos cuando un animal es feliz? dicen que una mirada vale mas que mil palabras, y esto es cierto hasta cierto punto. En el caso de los zoológicos ellos están en la obligación de garantizar las comodidades y necesidades de dichos animales. Quienes quisieran dejar de dormir en una cama para dormir en el piso? O de comer 5 veces al día a comer solo 1 o quizás ninguna. Nadie va a querer eso, todos cuando decidimos comprar una casa nueva siempre es mejor que la anterior! Siempre queremos vivir mejor! Y los animales también! Ellos también merecen y les debemos una vida agradable y satisfactoria en los Zoológicos. Hasta este punto estoy de acuerdo en que existan los zoológicos, si les brindan el espacio que merecen, si los tratan de maravilla, si les dan el alimento que necesitan, están pendiente de su cuidado, de su salud. ¡Todos queremos zoológicos así!\n\nAhora, les presento a la famosa **Ruperta**. Esta princesa tiene casi 47 años en el zoológico de Caricuao, Venezuela. Se alimenta de acelga, cambur, papaya, lechuga, auyama, básicamente de frutas y hortalizas. Es muy cariñosa, y ama a su cuidador. Les garantizo que su cuidador la ama tanto como ella a él! Y esto es muy importante.  Realmente existe una gran conexión entre ellos dos. Ella se encuentra en un espacio bastante amplio, aunque no lo suficiente. Tampoco cuentan con los instrumentos necesarios para hacerle estudios específicos, rayos x, exámenes de sangre. Y lo más triste es que los médicos veterinarios encargados del zoológico tienen una gran vocación, un gran amor hacia todos ellos. Y trabajan con lo pocos recursos que tienen. Que genial seria que tuviesen todo lo necesario para que la salud de Ruperta y todos los animales del zoológico estuviera 10/10. En Venezuela nada funciona, nada. Aunque hagamos todo lo posible porque así sea. \n\nAhora les presento a la leona **Cuma**, una belleza! esplendida, majestuosa! Y sin duda cada vez que lo veo me da una emoción muy grande. Muchos cuando lo ven se asustan, pero como asustarse al ver tanta hermosura? Es muy dócil, ama las caricias! Y les cuento que tuve la gran oportunidad de tocarlo. Ha sido uno de los mejores momentos de mi vida sin duda alguna. Los cuidadores de los leones (actualmente solo hay 3, Aquiles, Atila y Cuma la leona) están muy al pendiente de ellos, como les mencioné antes, trabajando con el mayor entusiasmo del mundo, con lo poco que tienen pero con un infinito amor. Las exhibiciones en las que se encuentran no son para nada adecuadas para ellos, son muy pequeñas, no tienen la capacidad de correr, de jugar, realmente solo están encerrados en espacios que no alcanzan ni 20 metros. Aunque estos leones nacieron en el Zoológico y nunca han estado en contacto con su habitad natural, no es lo adecuado para ellos. Siempre se metía a una finca a comerse los animales, los trabajadores de la finca un día decidieron cazarlo y matarlo, pero el dueño de la finca mostró su descontento y les ordeno que solo lo capturaran pero que no lo mataran. Y así fue, lograron capturarlo y lo entregaron al zoológico en el cual ahora está en espacios muy pequeños privado de la libertad que tenía antes, de correr, cazar, trepar. En mi opinión personal lo mejor que se pudo hacer con él hubiese sido soltarlo a su habitad natural. O condicionarle un mejor espacio en el Zoológico. En donde se encuentra ahora es uno de los más pequeños. Sinceramente Venezuela no está capacitada para tener zoológicos ahora mismo. Como les dije antes, los animales que están ahora deberían de ser entregados a Zoológicos de otros países en donde reciban la atención que necesitan y estén en espacios adecuados a sus características. Pero mientras esto no sucede los que aun estamos aquí en el país, los médicos veterinarios, los auxiliares, los voluntarios, los cuidadores, los proteccionistas, todos. Haremos lo mejor posible para que ellos estén bien.\n\nElla es otra belleza que tiene el zoológico, su nombre es **Zafira**. Le encanta sumergirse en su laguna y comer lechuga. Sé perfectamente cuando es hora de comer. Pero cuantas se dedican a luchar por hacer de eso algo mejor? \nEl zoológico de Caricuao, ha dado mucho de que hablar. Sobretodo estos últimos años. Yo estuve allí, yo soy voluntaria aunque ya termine mi compromiso con la universidad que era hacer mis pasantias. Por que? realmente me fue imposible no comprometerme con ellos, no amarlos, no querer lo mejor para todos los animales que habitan allí. Es muy fácil hacerse la vista gorda y no hacer nada por mejorar. Mientras yo este aquí en Venezuela y pueda hacer algo para ayudar a los animales que mas lo necesitan lo haré. He visto doctores curar heridas sin guantes, sin artículos, sin artículos de los que tanto nos enseñan en la clase de bioseguridad.\n\n*¡No todos tienen vocación, y los que sí tienen vocación valen oro!*\n\nNo justifico ninguna mala condición en la que se pueden encontrar algunos animales del Zoológico. Recently I finished my internships there, I'm a veterinary assistant. And I still attend the zoo as a volunteer, and the truth is I'm happy but at the same time very sad. I think it's no surprise to anyone that Venezuela is going through crisis in every way, if there is no food to supply a city, imagine that it would be for the animals that have their whole life in the zoo.\n\nI have never been in agreement with the zoos, I have always seen them as jails for animals, \"animals paying sentences they never committed\". Although this point of view has changed a little over time, since there are many zoos in which animals do not live in cages, locked, suffering from stress, depression and endless things unflattering for them. I think the most important thing for an animal is its welfare, its happiness, its comfort. If the animal is happy, everything is fine. Now, how do we know when an animal is happy? they say that a look is worth more than a thousand words, and this is true up to a point. In the case of zoos they are obliged to guarantee the comforts and needs of these animals. Up to this point I agree that there are zoos, if they give them the space they deserve, if they treat them wonderfully, if they give them the food they need, they are waiting for their care, their health. We all want zoos like that!\n\nNow, I present to you the famous **Ruperta**. This princess is almost 47 years old at the zoo in Caricuao, Venezuela. It feeds on chard, banana, papaya, lettuce, pumpkin, basically fruits and vegetables. She is very affectionate, and loves her citizen. I guarantee that your caregiver loves her as much as she loves him! And this is very important. There really is a great connection between the two of them. She is in a fairly large space, but not enough. Neither do they have the necessary instruments to perform specific studies, x-rays, blood tests. And the saddest thing is that the veterinary doctors in charge of the zoo have a great vocation, a great love towards all of them. And they work with what little resources they have. He always went to a farm to eat the animals, the farm workers decided one day to hunt him and kill him, but the owner of the farm showed his displeasure and ordered them to only capture him but not to kill him. And so it was, they managed to capture him and they gave him to the zoo where he is now in very small spaces deprived of the freedom he had before, of running, hunting, climbing. In my personal opinion, the best thing that could have been done with him would have been to release him to his natural habitat. Or to condition a better space in the Zoo. Where he is now is one of the smallest. Sincerely Venezuela is not qualified to have zoos right now. As I said before, animals that are now should be delivered to Zoos in other countries where they receive the care they need and are in spaces appropriate to their characteristics. But while this is not happening, those of us who are still here in the country, the veterinarians, the auxiliaries, the volunteers, the caretakers, the protectionists, all of us. We will do our best so that they are well.\n\nShe is another beauty that the zoo has, her name is **Zafira**. He loves to immerse himself in his lagoon and eat lettuce. I know perfectly when it's time to eat. I was there, I am a volunteer although I already finished my commitment to the university that was to do my internships. Why? It really was impossible for me not to commit myself to them, not to love them, not to want the best for all the animals that live there. It is very easy to turn a blind eye and do nothing to improve. While I am here in Venezuela and can do something to help the animals that need it most, I will do it. And if many more people think like me, many things would change.\nMany people go out to fight every day. Others only dedicate themselves to destroy.\nIt is in you to be different, love what you do, whatever you do, do it with love. Every animal deserves to live in optimal conditions. Let's fight because that's the way it is, let's fight because everything changes. They do not know how easy the world would be if many decided to contribute, join a volunteer! Be part of a charitable cause. We all need help!
