Johnson addressed a joint session of Congress to urge the passage of legislation guaranteeing voting rights for all.\n\nUsing the phrase “we shall overcome,” borrowed from African-American leaders struggling for equal rights, Johnson declared that “every American citizen must have an equal right to vote.” Johnson reminded the nation that the Fifteenth Amendment, which was passed after the Civil War, gave all citizens the right to vote regardless of race or color. But states had defied the Constitution and erected barriers. Discrimination had taken the form of literacy, knowledge or character tests administered solely to African-Americans to keep them from registering to vote.\n\n“Their cause must be our cause too,”Johnson said that “Because it is not just Negroes, but really it is all of us, who have must overcome the crippling legacy of bigotry and injustice. And we shall be overcome.”\n\nThe speech was delivered at eight days after racial violence erupted in Selma, Alabama. Civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King and over 500 supporters were attacked while planning a march from Selma to Montgomery to register African-Americans to vote. The police violence that erupted resulted in the death of a King supporter, a white Unitarian Minister from Boston named James J. Reeb. Television news coverage of the event galvanized voting rights supporters in Congress.\n\nA second attempt to march to Montgomery was also blocked by the police. It took Federal intervention with the “federalizing” of the Alabama national guard and the addition of over 2,500 other guards to allow the march to begin.\n\nThe march to Montgomery finally began March 21 with over 3,500 participants under the glare of worldwide news publicity.\n\nThe violence, however, continued. Just after the march was successfully completed on March 25, four Klansman shot and killed Detroit homemaker Viola Liuzzo as she drove marchers back to Selma.\n\nOn August 6, 1965, Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, which made it illegal to impose restrictions on federal, state and local elections that were designed to deny the vote to blacks.\n\nWhile state and local enforcement of the act was initially weak, mainly in the South, the Voting Rights Act gave African-American voters the legal means to challenge voting restrictions and vastly improved voter turnout. In Mississippi alone, voter turnout among blacks increased from 6 percent in 1964 to 59 percent in 1969.\n\nIn 1970, President Richard Nixon extended the provisions of the Voting Rights Act and lowered the eligible voting age for all voters to 18.",

      "body": "Combined with calorie restriction, a low-fat diet may protect the aging brain against inflammation-related activation of microglia, according to a new study of mice.\n\nMicroglia are a type of immune cell whose dysfunction has been linked to development problems and diseases of the brain and central nervous system (CNS).\n\nThe study — which was led by the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in the Netherlands and published in the journal Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience — discovered that exercise was far less effective than restricting calorie intake at preventing the inflammatory activation of microglia brought on by aging.\n\n\nMicroglia and aging-induced inflammation\n\nScientists have found that microglia play an essential role in the development of neurons, or nerve cells, as well as in the transmission of signals between neurons.\n\nWe also know that microglia monitor the functional tissues of the brain and the rest of the CNS and react to subtle changes in their microenvironments.\n\nIn addition, some studies have shown that microglia play a key role in certain diseases of the CNS.\n\nFor example, it has been suggested that through interaction with pro- and anti-inflammatory agents, microglia help to maintain the balance between neuron survival and death in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is a severe disease that affects motor neurons.\n\nWe also know that, as we age, some regions of the brain become inflamed because of microglia activity. But what is not clear is how this process responds to diet and lifestyle.\n\n\"Obesity and aging,\" explains senior study author Bart J. Eggen, who is a professor of molecular neuroimmunology at UMCG, \"are both prevalent and increasing in societies worldwide, but the consequences for the central nervous system are not well understood.\"\n\n\n\nLow-fat diet and calorie restriction\n\nFor their study, Prof. Eggen and his colleagues examined the effect of high-fat and low-fat diets on markers of inflammation and microglia activity in the hypothalami of mice aged 6 months. At this age, mice are adult but not elderly.\n\nThey also investigated the impact of high-fat and low-fat diets on the microglia of two groups of elderly 2-year-old mice.\n\nOne group had been raised on a lifelong regime of exercise (they could voluntarily use an exercise wheel), while the other had been raised on a lifelong regime of 40 percent calorie restriction but with no exercise.\n\nThe findings revealed that only a low-fat diet combined with calorie restriction prevented microglia-driven inflammation brought on by aging.\n\n\"A low-fat diet per se was not sufficient to prevent these changes,\" Prof. Eggen observes.\n\n\n\nExercise less effective than calorie restriction\n\nThe researchers also found that exercise was far less effective at preventing these aging-related changes than calorie restriction.\n\nThis is in contrast to findings by other groups that suggest that exercise might reduce the risk of developing other diseases.\n\nThe study authors point out that there are still many questions to be answered before we can understand what these findings mean.\n\nTake, for example, the fact that the mice were only fed one type of diet for their whole lives. This means that the findings cannot address questions about changes in diet.\n\nAnd, could a low-fat diet with calorie restriction undo any potential damage that might be inflicted by a high-fat, unrestricted diet? And, if so, how early in life should the switch take place for the consequences to be significant?\n\nAlso, further work is needed to establish the extent to which these changes are related to changes in cognitive performance.\n\n\"Nevertheless,\" Prof. Eggen concludes, \"these data do show that, in mice, the fat content of a diet is an important parameter in terms of the detrimental effects of aging on the brain, as well as caloric intake.\"\n\n\"Only when fat content and caloric intake are limited, can aging-induced changes in microglia be prevented.\"",
