Everbody knows - or so we believe- that Vincent van Gogh \"mutilated\" one of his ears on a certain night during a psychotic episode. But how true is that? I mean... that happened over 100 years ago, and during that time van Gogh was as renowned as any one of us. How much about this story is truth? And where’s the proof that confirms it?\n\nWell, the famous story stablishes, give or take, the following: On the night of December 23rd 1888, Vincent van Gogh had a heated quarrel with Paul Gauguin, a painter who happened to be his roommate, “He ran towards me, with a knife on his grip\", he declared later. Paul left for a room in a hotel, and during van Gogh's solitude, he had voice hallucinations that ultimately made him cut off most of his left ear with a shaving razorblade. He wrapped up his ear, and then gave it to a prostitute by the name of Rachel in a brothel by 1 Rue du Bout d'Arles, and then returned home (to \"The Yellow House\"). Rachel called the police and on the following day, they found him on his bed, unconscious, and covered in blood. Van Gogh declared he had no memories of the incident and was then taken to the Hospital in Arles, there he would treated y Dr Felix Rey, who was still undergoing training, and was hospitalized by the diagnosis of \"Acute mania associated with generalized delirium\" and was sent home on January 7th 1889. He was an art dealer, hence he knew many artists. Vincent had lived his whole life as a traveler, and had never owned a house of his own, which is why he found purpose in buying a house he could share with Theo and other painters. Though, it wasn't until his brother gave him money that he could rent 4 rooms from an old house. Sold to Anna Boch, 1890</a>.&nbsp;</p>\nPaul Gauguin was a more renowned painter than Vincent, however, he was at the time struggling financially, which is why he went to ask Theo - his friend - for money. Theo persuaded him to move in to The Yellow House with Vincent, in Arles (France). But even when Paul never refused the offer, he did postpone the trip several times until Octobre 1888. In the other hand... What really happened that night?\n\nThere are a thousand theories about the motives for which van Gogh cut off his ear. The most accepted is that he did it as a symbol of love for the supposed prostitute, Rachel. The second is due to the denial of the news telling of his brother’s incoming marriage, which arrived on December 23rd. Some also propose the possibility that it was done as an act of hatred towards his father. Other more foolhardy proposals would say that it was an inverse emulation of Jack the Ripper's crimes (who was known for mutilating prostitutes), which had been reported recently and multiple times in the local newspapers; This idea is not so farfetched if we think about the strong empathy the painter felt towards prostitutes. Another theory predicates that it was to imitate bullfights that took place in Arles, where the \"Matador\" would cut off the bull's ear as a trophy that would then be gifted to a lady among the spectators.\n\nOne of the theories that supports that van Gogh mutilated himself suggests that he was in love with Gauguin and that during a \"homosexual impulse\" – and I don't know what they mean by this – he cut off his ear as a kind of pun between \"lul\" which means penis in dutch and \"lel\" which means ear. Despite that, mi profound investigation on google translator concluded that lel is not a dutch word at all.\n\nAnother scenario that has been gaining support is that the wound was caused by another person, logically by Guaguin. Theory that would take away much of the romanticism and personality, which is reason why it is shunned by the media even though it still doesn't take away from the truth. It is based on the following: Guaguin was never convinced about living with Vincent, furthermore, it is accepted that both clashed often due to their differences in art. Paul believed in painting according to memory, and Vincent in painting from is been seen, thus Paul would paint indoors, while Vincent outdoors. However, during winter or rainy days, he was forced to go back to the studio and paint next to his roommate. It is known that Paul, who by the way was a master at fencing, had intentions in leaving the house, which could have been what unleashed the brawl. Paul Gauguin</a> &nbsp;</p>\nThere are different versions regarding how the wound was, Theo and his family relate that it was only the lobe, but the police report and Dr. Rey referred a \"severe cut of the outer ear\", Dr Rey went as far as to draw the wound while mainting contact through letters with Irving Stone, an american novelist that was doing research on the case for a biographic film \"Lust for for Life\" in 1930, over 40 years after the events. According to the characteristics of the wound, experts have described that it is quite unlikely for it to have been autoinflicted. Not to mention that a razorblade wouldn’t have had the same effect. And thus, it all concluded with a \"pact of silence\" between both men, and Guaguin returning to Paris the following day.</p>\n\nThere is another interesting debate in this story: Rachel the prostitute, who was the first person who saw it and who called the police. There are neither witnesses nor accounts of any Rachel (be it artistic or real name) in that brothel according to art historians. This leads the search for the most important testimony in a dead end. But what is the mystery? If by then the profession was better regarded. Well, according to other investigations, Rachel was not a prostitute, but rather a servant by the name Gabrielle Berlatier, who by age restrictions worked there illegally, not to mention terribly accepted.\n\nGabrielle's story is just as interesting. She was a farmer’s daughter, who arrived at Arles to get treatment at the hospital after getting infected by rabies after a dog bit her. The transportation and the treatment left both her and her family in poverty (some things never change), forcing her to work since tender age. Her name was kept a secret for several years as was her request. However, it was later on revealed by Bernadette Murphy, an art historian who claimed still kept contact with the family. Researchers have even proved the existence of such a character with the findings of the hospitals records containing her medical files; that I shall show you next.       "body": "Déjenme contarles una historia bastante interesante, se los aseguro. Todos sabemos, o creemos saber, que Vincent van Gogh “se cortó” la oreja una noche luego de un episodio psicótico. Pero que tan cierto es esto? Es decir... eso pasó hace más de 100 años y en ese momento van Gogh era tan conocido como podríamos ser nosotros, ¿Qué hay de autentico en esta historia? y ¿Donde están las pruebas que lo confirman?\n\nBueno la famosa historia establece más o menos lo siguiente: en la noche del 23 de diciembre de 1888 Vincent van Gogh tuvo una fuerte discusión con Paul Gauguin, un pintor con quien vivía, \"corrió hacia mí, con una navaja abierta en la mano\" declararía luego, por lo que salió de la casa y se quedo en un hotel aquella noche. Una vez solo van Gogh tuvo alucinaciones de voces que terminaron provocando que se cortara parte de su oreja izquierda con una cuchilla de afeitar. Vendó la oreja, se la entrego a una prostituta llamada Rachel en un burdel en 1 Rue du Bout d'Arles y regreso a su casa (“La Casa Amarilla”). Rachel llamo a la policía y al día siguiente los mismos lo encontraron inconsciente y ensangrentado en su cama. Van Gogh declaro que no tenia memoria del incidente y fue llevado al hospital de Arles, allí fue atendido por el Dr. Félix Rey, quien aún estaba en entrenamiento, fue ingresado bajo el diagnóstico de “manía aguda con delirio generalizado” y dado de alta el 7 de enero de 1889. Qué pasó en realidad aquella noche?\n\nExisten mil teorías de los motivos por los que van Gogh se habría cortado la oreja, la más manejada es que lo hizo como un símbolo de amor para la supuesta prostituta Rachel, la segunda es que fue por el rechazo de la noticia de que su hermano Theo se iba a casar, la cual llego en una carta el mismo 23 de diciembre. También postulan la posibilidad de que lo haya hecho en un acto de odio a su padre proyectado en si mismo, y otras más temerarias señalan que fue por emular de forma inversa los crímenes de Jack the Ripper (conocido por mutilar prostitutas),  los cuales se habían reportado reciente y multiples veces en su periódico local; dicha idea no es tan descabellado si pensamos en la fuerte empatía que sentía el pintor por las prostitutas. O que fue para imitar las corridas de toros que se daban en Arles donde el matador corta la oreja del toro como trofeo y se la entrega a una dama en el público.\n\nIncluso una de las teorías que soportan que van Gogh se automutiló sugiere que el estaba enamorado de Gauguin y que en un “impulso homosexual”, no sé a qué se refieren con esto, se corto la oreja por un juego de palabras entre “lul” que significa pene en holandés y “lel”  que significa oreja, aunque mi profunda investigación en traductor google concluyó que lel no es siquiera una palabra en holandés.\n\nOtro escenario cada vez más aceptado indica que la herida fue provocada por otra persona, lógicamente por Gauguin, teoria que le quitaría mucho romanticismo y personalidad a la historia y una razón por la que es descartada constantemente por los medios pero no le quietaria lo cierto. Se basa en lo siguiente: Guaguin nunca estuvo muy convencido de vivir con Vincent, además es aceptado que ambos peleaban constantemente por sus diferencias en el arte. Paul creía en pintar de acuerdo a la memoria y Vincent en pintar lo que veía, entonces Paul pintaba en la casa y van Gogh pintaba afuera, sin embargo en invierno o días lluviosos se veía en la obligación de volver al estudio y pintar junto a su compañero. De acuerdo con las características del corte los expertos han descrito que es poco probable que haya sido autoinflingido. Sin contar que una hojilla de afeitar no habría causado l mismo efecto. Así que todo concluyó en un “pacto de silencio” entre ambos hombres y con Guaguin retornando a Paris el día siguiente. \n<p>\nHay otro debate interesante en esta historia: la prostituta Rachael, quien fue la primera persona que lo vio y quien llamo a la policía. No existen registros ni testigos de ninguna Rachel (ni por nombre artístico ni por nombre real) en aquel prostíbulo según los historiadores del arte. Esto dirige la búsqueda del testimonio más importante a un punto muerto. Pero ¿Cuál es el misterio?  Si para entonces la profesión era más aceptada. Bueno de acuerdo con otras investigaciones no se trataba de una protituta sino de una sirvienta llamada Gabrielle Berlatier quien por ser menor de edad era ilegal que trabajara en aquel local además de mal visto.\n</p>\nLa historia de Gabrielle es incluso igual de interesante, ella era hija de granjeros y llegó a Paris para tratarse en el hospital pues había contraído la enfermedad de la rabia posterior a la mordedura de un perro. El traslado y el tratamiento de la enfermedad la dejaron tanto a ella como a su familia en condiciones de pobreza (hay cosas que nunca cambian) obligándola a trabajar desde muy joven. Su nombre se mantuvo en secreto por muchos años pues fue su petición sin embargo fue revelado años más tarde por Bernadette Murphy, una historiadora del arte quien dice aún mantiene relación con los familiares.  Los investigadores han incluso corroborado la existencia de tal personaje con el hallazgo en los registros del hospital de su ficha médica; que aquí se la traigo. It's not like I began a lot earlier, that's more or less the  average.\n\nAbout extra-curriculars.. well.. first years it's even harder to do that, maybe because you are getting use to your new life.. and i don't like clubs so that's the easy part. I've been involved in scientific research since 2nd year but I don't know if you find that interesting  hahah, But last year I took a decision and organized and join the climbing club at my collage so I guess it's about organization. If you want something you'll get the time. Remember that you'll always need balance.",
