| body | OK then, Here is what we know so far about the security vulnerabilities [Spectre and Meltdown](https://spectreattack.com): They are hardware bugs in the CPU, which makes patching them in software hard, if not impossible. It may require updating the firmware of your computer. Specter and Meltdown allow a process running on your computer to see the memory of other processes. There is conflicting information on the Net, but it seems possible that at least Spectre could breach browser containment, user permissions, isolation of processes, and even virtualization layers. *This is bad*. It means that, potentially, malicious code on a web site you are visiting can read the keys and passwords stored in the memory of other programs on the computer. The site might not even intentionally be doing anything bad, just serving adds with malicious code or it has been hacked. What can we do to protect our crypto assets? Perfect, 100%, security does not exist in life but we can take some steps to reduce the risks: 1. Update your Operating System! This is good advice in general - patch your S. Meltdown looks fixable by patches at the cost of slower performance, while Specter requires further investigation. Most major vendors have issued updates, Microsoft, Apple, various Linux distributions... 2. Install multiple instances of your OS on separate partitions. In them install only what is needed for crypto tasks - a wallet, or a browser to access one crypto exchange. Use them for one and only one task. Virtualization probably does not protect you anymore, especially against Spectre. I am following my favorite virtualization OS, [Qubes](https://www.qubes-os.org), to see their assessment of the risk. They are still [investigating](https://www.qubes-os.org/news/2018/01/04/xsa-254-meltdown-spectre/). 3. [Cold storage](https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/030515/what-cold-storage-bitcoin.asp) has always been a good idea, but requires extra work. Now it is even more justified. 4. Hardware wallets. They are not vulnerable to these exploits. [Trezor](https://trezor.io/) and [Ledger](https://www.ledgerwallet.com/) are two of the best. 5. Non-Intel CPU? It is still not clear if AMD processors are affected - there is contradictory info on the Net. We will see. ARM processors are not affected though, they have completely different architecture. If you can find an ARM powered laptop, use it. Here are some with [Windows](https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/5/16734402/windows-10-arm-snapdragon-laptop-hp-asus-lenovo-hands-on). Or check out [Pine64](https://www.pine64.org/?page_id=3707), if you are of the the Linux persuasion. 6. Heard the advice that you should not keep your crypto assets in on-line wallets and web exchanges? Good, follow it. Keep your coins accessible only by you in your software or hardware wallet. It was a good idea before, doubly so now. Crypto exchanges and on-line wallets are constantly attacked and broken into. Now the bad guys have new tools. The ultimate solution will come when the currently used CPUs are replaced by new generations. It will take years, by which time other vulnerabilities would have emerged. They always do - humans make mistakes, and programmers are humans, mostly :) As the experts say "Security is a process, not a state." So keep calm and carry on. |

| body | OK then, Here is what we know so far about the security vulnerabilities [Spectre and Meltdown](https://spectreattack.com): They are hardware bugs in the CPU, which makes patching them in software hard, if not impossible. The site might not even be doing anything bad, just serving adds with malicious code or it has been hacked. 3. | body | Never been on Twitter. Deleted my Facebook account this summer. But I spend a lot of time on the Net in my curated garden of blogs, Youtube channels, RSS feeds, forums... It's time to try something new. Time to see what this newfangled Blockchain Social Media is. So, hi everyone! Lets enrich each other with our thoughts. I mean this both literally and figuratively. Literally - sweet STEEM crypto! Figuratively - we, most people, can't think well by ourselves. We are not trained in Philosophy and Logic, so we can't have rigorous objective arguments between opposing positions in our brains. But when we air those positions out, in the open market of ideas, then the best ones win and all of us get better for it. Freedom of speech, free expression of ideas is what keeps us thriving on this planet. All opinions, silly, weird, "hateful", should be heard, so they could be weighted against better ideas. Thus, you can't lose an argument - even if your idea is defeated, you end up with a better understanding and no longer in error. That's why I'm here. Why "raccoon-samurai"? My brain was in a post-New-Year's food coma. Still consider myself lucky. Rejected nicks included "subsonic-squirrel" and "steemit-baby-one-more-time" :) Good luck, R.S. |
