| title | QuarkChain Bi-weekly Project Progress Report: Aug. 20 - Sept. 4 |
| body | Welcome to the 13th QuarkChain bi-weekly report for the period from Aug. 20 to Sept. 4! For better communications with our community, we’ll be updating our progress every other week. **Note that we also have a surprise for you at the end!** ## 1. Important Announcement We have announced a new token release plan: all the undistributed tokens held by private sale purchasers, the foundation, and the QuarkChain core team will remain locked for another nine months (until early June 2019). Please check the detailed schedule at https://medium.com/quarkchain-official/summary-of-quarkchain-major-progress-and-token-distribution-schedule-update-91cb722a7a95 ## 2. Development Progress 1. Implemented neighboring rules of sharding for cross-shard transaction throttling, which helps reduce communication cost inside the cluster and make them scale better; 2. Implemented remaining JSON-RPC over HTTP endpoints such as retrieving storage, estimating GAS / GAS price, etc; 3. Supported creating QuarkChain accounts, storing / loading keystore files via command line; 4. Analyzed logging / monitoring (Kafka + Druid) results of testnet clusters during load testing, and identified several performance bottlenecks (such as the order of broadcasting blocks). Will investigate further for potential solutions. ## 3. Offline Activities ### 3.1. 2018 Silicon Valley Mars Blockchain Summit QuarkChain CEO, Qi Zhou has been invited to join the panel of 2018 Silicon Valley Mars Blockchain Summit. He briefly reviewed QuarkChain's latest development processes including QuarkChain testnet 1.0, which reached a peak TPS of 1.4K+ during the live demo. In addition to the scalability problem of blockchain, Qi Zhou also highlighted some practical issues of blockchain such as usability of ERC20 tokens. Qi Zhou reveals QuarkChain’s **original** multi-native-token design to address this issue so that a user could create a native token and use it as GAS and payment (https://medium.com/quarkchain-official/supporting-multi-native-tokens-in-a-single-blockchain-686fc65f5931). Furthermore, Qi Zhou emphasized another critical function of future blockchain which is called transaction efficiency. Currently, general purpose VMs could be inefficient and slow for some specific transactions. QuarkChain is proposing to address this issue by creating new shards to support different consensus algorithms, transactions, and even new VMs. ### 3.2. Combination Meetup with Ankr In Vietnam Recently, Ankr held an offline meetup in Vietnam. As an ecosystem partner of Ankr, Professor Yaodong Yang, the foundation scientist, represented QuarkChain and participated in the conference with the vision of promoting collaboration. He launched a heated discussion focusing on consensus algorithm, incentive strategy, QuarkChain mainnet development, and sharding techniques with many blockchain experts. ### 3.3. Blockchain Symposium Seminar, Korea Jonathan Kim, Head of QuarkChain Korea, attended a public meeting of the Blockchain Symposium seminar as the opening-session speaker and was interviewed by the media after the meeting. ## 4.Strategic Partnership On August 23, according to QuarkChain oversea’s news platform, Vidy, a blockchain company with promoting new technologies, adhering to the concepts of “open and inclusive” and “mutual benefit”, has built a strategic partnership with QuarkChain. As always, QuarkChain wants to collaborate with high-quality partners to accelerate the development of the Internet ecosystem and application together. Vidy was founded at Silicon Valley by Harvard alumni Patrick Colangelo and Credit Suisse's elite Matthew Lim in 2016. Since then Vidy has grown to a team with 20 people in San Francisco and Shanghai. For the past two years, Vidy has built a solid underlying technology foundation for the innovation of the Internet industry with its core technology of video processing based on natural language-based transcription, markup and indexing. Vidy's consulting teams are mostly industry giants including P&G CTO Alan Boehme, Coca-Cola Vice President Damian Marano, and Pepsi's former CEO Dawn Hudson, Sephora Marketing Director Kimberly Wheeler, Ogilvy's former Chief Digital Officer Brandon Berger, and former UBS Group Ex-Chairman Lim Ho Kee. At present, the Vidy’s team has started deep collaborations with many public chains, especially those with blockchain decentralization technologies and distributed data processing. The strategic partnership between QuarkChain and Vidy will mainly focus on promoting blockchain infrastructure technologies, and giving active assistance and support for both sides in the data layer, consensus layer and application layer. In this bear market, we have never stopped running forward. We do what we are supposed to do and keep making progress. We hope to offer you a satisfactory answer in the future. **Finally, here comes our surprise for you! If you are curious about the daily life of QuarkChain US team, click on https://twitter.com/Quark_Chain/status/1037924844346650624.** ### FYI: 1. | body | QuarkChain was very honored to hold an AMA (Ask Me Anything) in EOT Community on Sep. 4, 2018. This is the summary for the AMA on Sep. 4. Through this joint AMA in the partner's community, our relationship has been further strengthened. ### Part 1: Non-technical Questions #### 1. Introduction to QuarkChain core team members (1). Anthurine Xiang QuarkChain CMO Finance, consulting and technology background Six years of work experience in Wall Street and Silicon Valley Worked in Argus, LinkedIn, Wish, etc. (2). Qi Zhou QuarkChain Founder and CEO Ph.D. from Georgia Tech Expert in high-performance systems Worked at Google, Facebook and EMC Fifteen years of experience in software development (3). Ting Du QuarkChain CBO Expert in data and product management, a veteran in investment and business incubation Worked in NHN China, UniDT and Liuhe Capital, focusing on blockchain ecosystem establishment and business application research We also have many senior engineers from large companies such as Google, Facebook, Uber and Camera 360, and research scientists from top Chinese and American universities. #### 2. What are the daily operations of the team? We have several teams with total 20+ members working in different areas including Engineering, Marketing, and Business Development, and each team has its own operational model. We are mainly based in Silicon Valley, but we also have offices in Korea and China. #### 3. What is QuarkChain? How is it different from other public chains? QuarkChain, a decentralized, secure, scalable, and permissionless blockchain technology to deliver high on-chain TPS (more than 100K) by using horizontal scale technology. Unlike many other blockchain companies that try to improve the performance of one single chain, QuarkChain partitions the system ledger to multiple shards (or sharded blockchains), build consensus to drive the shards and allow scalable interoperations within shards. (1). Decentralized - There are two aspects associated with decentralized: a) From the miners perspective, a weak miner can produce a block in a shard with relatively low difficulty; b) From the node perspective, QuarkChain allows multiple cheap nodes forming a cluster to replace a super-full node. Thus, QuarkChain can produce higher throughput. QuarkChain network also offers more shards which are relatively easier to mine or mint (via PoW or PoS). (2). Secure - To enable security, QuarkChain builds a root-chain that a) with high hash power; b) protects all shards, and thus all transactions of all shards are protected by root-chain. Concretely, with our two-layered blockchain structure, the root-chain layer will confirm all blocks from sharded blockchains by PoW that secures all the shards (and thus all transactions in the shards) with a large portion of the hash power of the network. (3). Scalable - Scalability is mainly by adding more shards in the network. There are two kinds of scale: Vertical Scale and Horizontal Scale. QuarkChain uses the latter one, which is widely used in large companies such as Google for years. Theoretically, whenever the capacity is not enough, the system can add more shards and more nodes, the capacity can be significantly scaled. Thus, from the business perspective, QuarkChain can provide a more open, scalable, elastic and suitable ecosystem for business applications. When our mainnet launches in Q4 2018 / Q1 2019, the mainnet's TPS can be increased on-demand by adding more shards. #### 4. I knew that QuarkChain released its testnet in July. Congrats! What’s the performance of it? (1). Here is the detailed article about testnet: https://medium.com/quarkchain-official/quarkchain-testnet-1-0-bottom-quark-2ee8665ce5b1 (2). Here is the demo of testnet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUldrq3zKwE&feature=youtu.be (3). Testnet parameter overview No. of Shards: 256 No. of Clusters: 50 Cluster Structure: 1 root node, 128 shard nodes (root nodes are responsible for handling and storing of cross-shard transactions) Total nodes in the network: 6450 = 129 x 50 (distributed amongst East/West America, Asia, Europe, etc.) TPS: 10,000+ (peak TPS in the live demo: 14,000+) Testnet:http://testnet.quarkchain.io/ #### 5. QuarkChain also launched its first open-source client library. Did anyone use it? Our engineering team has developed and open sourced our first client library for QuarkChain. The library provides similar interfaces as web3.js (the Ethereum client library) so that the existing Ethereum DApp developers can easily start building Apps on QuarkChain. We also integrated the client library and our testnet with MetaMask (the most popular hot wallet as a browser extension) which can be used to manage QuarkChain accounts and signing transactions. **The library was used by several teams in the past hackathon two weeks ago. We welcome more developers to try it out and provide feedback. Feel free to email [email protected]_ for any question or feedback.** GitHub: https://github.com/QuarkChain/quarkchain-web3.js npm: https://www.npmjs.com/package/quarkchain-web3 Testnet (now supports MetaMask): https://testnet.quarkchain.io Testnet JSON RPC endpoint: http://jrpc.testnet.quarkchain.io:38391 Developer guide: https://goo.gl/JzcXaU **In addition, we have opened QuarkChain’s official developer community on Discord. Please feel free to join us and discuss up-to-date blockchain technologies with hackers! Here is the invitation: https://discord.gg/gVYRazf** #### 6. EOT is one of the strategic partners of QuarkChain. Could you name some other strategic partners? How EOT and QuarkChain will work together? We have over 40 partners such as Ankr, Celer Network, CovalentChain, DREP and CertiK. For more information about our partners in the ecosystem, you could check here: https://medium.com/quarkchain-official/quarkchain-ecosystem-progress-report-no-1-9404d325cbae Firstly, We will work together in the gaming field. We think our high TPS public chain will meet the requirement for blockchain games that EOT is trying to build. We feel gaming will most likely be the No.1 field where killer apps emerge. Moreover, EOT has extensive experiences in gaming, and we also believe gaming is one direction of the blockchain. Some games, such as CryptoKitties, have got much attention. EOT's CryptoAlpaca creates a new type of gaming. With the high TPS of QuarkChain, we believe we can incorporate more games to build a large user base. The combination of high TPS of QuarkChain and CryptoAlpaca of EOT will open a great opportunity in the market. #### 7. Recently, QuarkChain has announced Eco-fund. Could you please tell us more about it? We are now raising the $50,000,000 Eco-fund to build a collaborative and open ecosystem of QuarkChain, as well as support the rapid development of the whole QuarkChain ecosystem. The reason why we do so is that we believe in the bear market, startups need more supports from us just like we did before. Generally, an Eco-fund is focusing more on the short-term and middle-term (1-2 years or 2-3 years) development of projects whereas our foundation will think more about long-term strategies. Right now, we have over 40 partners from various fields. We support not only DApps on layer2 (like most of other public chains) but also vertical public chains. You can check more details about our Ecosystem at: #### 8. What are the next milestones of QuarkChain? And what are the QuarkChain next events with the community? Our next milestones will be open source and testnet 2.0. When testnet 2.0 is launched, everyone is able to join the network and offer the hash power to produce blocks, which will further help us to verify our system and attract more community members to join us. In terms of upcoming events, we do have lots of offline meetup plans in South Asia, South Korea, Russia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Europe in the coming months. We will also join a hackathon in Russia soon. Please stay tuned and follow our Telegram news channel (https://t.me/QuarkChain_News) and official twitter account if you can. #### 9. What are the challenges QuarkChain will face before the scheduled release of mainnet and how do you intend to address these challenges? The major challenge is that for any new blockchain technology, it needs time to verify since the blockchain area is still an experimental technology. To clear uncertainties during the phase, we have to work extremely and have our community to work with us. #### 10. How do you see the future of blockchain industry? Even though the blockchain industry is in its early stage and just a few people benefit from it now, we believe that the blockchain technology will become a tool for our daily life usage. For example, in the future people could use blockchain to make payment, to sign and storage housing purchasing contract, and even to vote. There are also possibilities for new business models that we never thought before, just like how YouTube, Facebook come into reality after the invention and prosperity of the Internet. #### 11. How do you see blockchain games? We think blockchain games and blockchains can benefit from each other. On the one hand, blockchain games are a good way to educate people and spread the influence of blockchain; on the other hand, blockchains provide games with an ideal platform. We believe EOT has lots of advantages in this field. ### Part 2: Technical Questions #### 1. Will QuarkChain has its own language in the future or will it be using Solidity? QuarkChain is able to support different VMs and even different consensus algorithms in the future. Using new VMs shouldn't be difficult, and we may develop our own Smart Contract language if necessary. However, in the current case, using solidity makes it easier for our development. #### 2. For sharding, is it the only way of working as in getting scalability to work or can it work in various ways of sharding as Zilliqa and QuarkChain have different approaches to make sharding work? For the first question, sharding is an idea rather than a single solution. For example, Google has Google's sharding solution whereas Facebook has Facebook's. Even different products may need different sharding solutions in centralized systems. Therefore, I believe sharding solution is not unique in the decentralized world. For the second question, our technology is quite different from Zilliqa's as we enable state sharding by cluster, where a cheap node in a cluster would only need to store the local shard ledger. However, Zilliqa only offers transaction sharding, where all nodes must maintain the full ledger of the network. When TPS goes high, how to keep a large-sized ledger becomes a problem. If you want to know more about our sharding technology, please refer to https://medium.com/quarkchain-official/quarkchain-explained-part-3-sharding-in-quarkchain-state-partitioning-bce9fdc86fcb for more details. #### 3. Your CEO, Qi Zhou talked about a new concept in blockchain industry - multi-native-token. What is it? How does it benefit projects? You can refer to https://medium.com/quarkchain-official/supporting-multi-native-tokens-in-a-single-blockchain-686fc65f5931 for more details. #### 4. What do you think of the consensus mechanism of PoW / PoS? What's your strategy as a public chain? And do you think PoS will replace PoW in the future? We think pure PoS has a lot of uncertainties compared to PoW. However, the mix of PoW/PoS could be a good solution. For example, I heard that ETH Casper is postponed because of these uncertainties recently. In our case, we also have a plan to support PoW / PoS, where PoW is for the root chain to provide safety, while PoS is for each shard to provide high TPS. We are working on this hybrid consensus, and we have some good (and exciting) results. #### FYI: 1. We just opened QuarkChain’s official developer community on Discord. Feel free to join us and discuss up-to-date blockchain technologies with other hackers! Here is the link: https://discord.gg/gVYRazf 2. | title | QuarkChain Weekly AMA Summary - 08/25/2018 |
| body | QuarkChain has been holding its weekly AMA (Ask Me Anything) on **Telegram/Wechat groups every Saturday, from 7-8 PM PST.** This is the summary for AMA from last week. We are always happy to take questions/comments/suggestions. ### Part 1: Marketing Questions #### 1. Any updates to the roadmap? Is QuarkChain on track for a Q4 mainnet launch? QuarkChain’s next big step is to open source and launch our testnet 2.0, in which everybody is able to join the network and mine. Our engineers are working hard on both the documents and codes. You can find the document at: https://developers.quarkchain.io/#introduction. The mainnet is still scheduled Q4 to launch if everything goes well. We think the plan is objective, but everything should depend on the actual progress. For example, even Ethereum’s mainnet takes about nine months to become stabilized. We want to make sure that our project is in a good-shape before launching mainnet so that everyone's benefits can be protected here. #### 2. Does QuarkChain has any plan list on new exchanges? Though it may not be wise to be listed in new exchanges in the bear market, QuarkChain team is still actively seeking better solutions. #### 3. I heard that China is about to ban crypto ads. Will it affect to your project? I think China is banning the scam and fraudulent projects rather than blockchain technology. Instead, blockchain technology is very welcome in China. We are the kind of team more focusing on technology, and we even think China’s action may help us. #### 4. Aren't you concerned there are too many infrastructures play in the market? How many do you think will survive in the end? Blockchain is a global revolution. It should and can not be controlled by one project. In the market, QuarkChain has its own features. For example, a lot of infrastructures focus on 1) vertical scalability; 2) vertical domain. While with our horizontal scalability infrastructure, we could easily 1) employ the latest vertical scalability results into QuarkChain; 2) add shards that support vertical domain natively. There will be a lot of interesting features we are targeting for QuarkChain testnet 2.0 besides scalability. #### 5. How many DApps in total now? Is it increasing or still 30+ in total? NOS has 60+ DApps even though they have not launched their ICO yet, and EOS has even more. NAS even claims that they have more DApps than ETH. We need DApps running on us of high-quality. Our goal is when a killer DApp shows up, we could provide it with the best infrastructure. In fact, QuarkChain is nurturing more DApps. ### Part 2: Technical Questions #### 1. Which language is used in QuarkChain core? Currently, we use Python (as Vitalik's favorite). However, we plan to work on more efficient language once most of the features are ready. We are always welcome contributions from communities. **Feel free to join our developer community at: https://discordapp.com/invite/aZDWcwV** #### 2. What will be improved on testnet 2.0? Could it reach over 50k TPS? We won't claim any numbers, but we will help any community members to reproduce it. Testnet 2.0 happens after open source. Note that we did not list any TPS numbers on our roadmap. Later for the mainnet, the average TPS depends on the real traffic. Thus, it is not determined by us but depends on how many applications are running on top of the mainnet. #### 3. Can you elaborate on the use case of the QKC coin? Ethereum uses eth as the GAS fee and pays fees for its Smart Contracts. So what is the use case of QKC? Yes, currently QKC is used as GAS, but we will support more features. Here is one more interesting feature we may support: https://medium.com/quarkchain-official/supporting-multi-native-tokens-in-a-single-blockchain-686fc65f5931 ### FYI: 1. We just opened QuarkChain’s official developer community on Discord. Feel free to join us and discuss up-to-date blockchain technologies with other hackers! Here is the link: https://discordapp.com/invite/aZDWcwV 2. Thanks for the suggestions from community members, we have started a new post in our official Reddit account (https://www.reddit.com/r/quarkchainio/) to collect questions before each AMA. Please feel free to post your questions and suggestions there any time before AMA. (Every Saturday from 7 PM to 8 PM, PST) 3. We opened our official Facebook account now! | title | Interview with Hackers From Blockchain Awakens Hackathon |
| body | The Blockchain Awakens Hackathon was successfully held by Google ABC on Aug. 4th - 5th in Silicon Valley. This event has attracted more than 20 blockchain celebrities’ attendee, including Whitfield Diffie, the Turing-Award winner and Father of Encryption, Professor Shoucheng Zhang, the discoverer of Majorana fermion, and Yi He, the co-founder of Binance. 23 teams and more than 120 engineers from top companies such as Google, Facebook, Uber, Linkedin and Amazon also joined the competition for the final laurel. This hackathon selected three blockchain platforms and QuarkChain is very honored to be one of them (together with NKN and Hyperledger). **8 teams out 23 chose QuarkChain as their development platform.** We just opened QuarkChain’s official developer community on Discord. Feel free to join us and discuss up-to-date blockchain tech with hackers! Here is the invitation: https://discord.gg/T5jvkMR We interviewed one of the hacker teams - DOT (Decentralized Organization Token) recently. They shared their product, development experiences on top of QuarkChain and the expectation of blockchain industry. DOT team members are **all women engineers and designers:** Sharu Jiang, Software Engineer at Google Playstore Team Jing Li, Software Engineer at Google Infrastructure Team Jessie, UX Designer at Android, UX Shuanglin Yin, Software Engineer at Google Gsuite Security Team Yi Li, Software Engineer at Investgo In the following, we share our interview information with DOT. #### Q1: What’s DOT? How can we use DOT? A1: DOT, short for Decentralized Organization Token, is a management tool for any kinds of organization. The members of the organization could use DOT to vote board members and fund projects. When people finish their work, they will get tokens as rewards and then use them to vote for next projects. The weight of vote is positively correlated with people’s token balance. It is a perfect mechanism to get this organization going. In addition, token holders can even get physical rewards as a kind of bonus. Now DOT tool is being improved for the future use within Google employees’ internal groups. Let’s wait for it! #### Q2: Why do you choose QuarkChain? A2: There are several reasons for us to choose QuarkChain. 1) We need a permissionless chain to develop DOT since we want it to be secure, transparent, and decentralized. 2) Considering the high demands of DOT in the future, we need high throughput for our service. Therefore, QuarkChain is our best option. 3) We have multiple smart contracts in our product and running each of them will cost a lot of GAS fee. In this case, we prefer QuarkChain. 4) QuarkChain is EVM-compatible, which means we can easily build our dApp interact with a smart contract on QuarkChain running on an EVM-compatible smart contract. Based on those facts, we decided to use QuarkChain as our development platform. #### Q3: Based on your team’s experience of using QuarkChain’s service and API, what kind of suggestions do you have for us? A3: QuarkChain’s client library API is well-documented and easy to use. We could follow the steps to call API and build dApp on top of that. Some suggestions would be: 1) Better integrated and user-friendly dev tools like Remix suite for QuarkChain 2) Provide more examples in the documentation 3) Better tooling for cross-shard contract operations (DOT is currently deployed on single shard) #### Q4: Do you have any expectation for blockchain industry in general? A4: We believe that blockchain technology can actually change our lives. For example, DOT is a new way to manage an organization and encourage all the members to contribute for the common goal. However, this kind of change will take time. We need a more mature blockchain infrastructure to support it. A fast, secure and decentralized chain is required for the future development. QuarkChain is on the right way to make a better blockchain industry. There are other projects on the hackathon that build things on top of QuarkChain. 1) Armada - Blockchain-based international supply chain system. 2) Online advertisement system - Online business gets promoted by paying and will receive reward through smart contract by someone showing interest in his product. 3) Real-estate system - House renting/sale system. Make transactions through the Smart Contract. 4) Infraudable resume - Put every team member’s contribution on blockchain and make it unchangeable. 5) Blockchain-based sale system - Transactions are through smart contracts. Anyone can write reviews and if those reviews are of high quality, reviewers can get tokens as the reward. 6) Personal training monitor - Users need to set a certain amount of tokens in advance when they make training resolutions. Once they finish their goals, they will get money back. Otherwise, they will lose money and the money will be put into a money pool to reward those ninjas who finish their goals according to Game Theory. 7) Love Chain - Generate customized online love notes. The whole hackathon was a great success. We appreciate all teams for participating Blockchain Awakens Hackathon. For those who chose QuarkChain, we hope you can continuously support us in the future! **Again, we just opened QuarkChain’s official developer community on Discord. | title | QuarkChain AMA in DREP Community Summary - 08/20/2018 |
| body | QuarkChain was very honored to hold an AMA (Ask Me Anything) in DREP Community on Aug 20, 2018. This is the summary for the AMA on Aug 20. (2). Qi Zhou QuarkChain Founder and CEO Ph.D. from Georgia Tech Expert in high-performance systems Worked at Google and Facebook Fifteen years of experience in software development (3). Ting Du QuarkChain CBO Expert in data and product management, a veteran in investment and business incubation Worked in NHN China, UniDT and Liuhe Capital, focusing on blockchain ecosystem establishment and business application research #### 2. What are the daily operations of the team? We have several teams in different areas including Engineering, Marketing, and Business Development, and each team has its own operational model. (1). Decentralized - There are two aspects associated with decentralized: a) From the miners perspective, a weak miner can produce a block in a shard with relatively weak difficulty; b) From the node perspective, QuarkChain allows multiple cheap nodes forming a cluster to replace a super-full node. Theoretically, whenever the capacity is not enough, add more shards and more nodes, the capacity can be significantly scaled. Thus, from the business perspective, QuarkChain can provide a more open, scalable and suitable ecosystem for business applications. Testnet parameters overview No. of Shards: 256 No. of Clusters: 50 Cluster Structure: 1 root node, 128 shard nodes (root nodes are responsible for handling and storing of cross-shard transactions) Total nodes in the network: 6450 = 129 x 50 (distributed amongst East/West America, Asia, Europe, etc.) TPS: 10,000+ (peak TPS in the live demo: 14,000+) Testnet:https://quarkchain.io/ #### 5. Feel free to email [email protected]_ for any question or feedback.** GitHub: https://github.com/QuarkChain/quarkchain-web3.js npm: https://www.npmjs.com/package/quarkchain-web3 Testnet (now supports MetaMask): https://testnet.quarkchain.io Testnet JSON RPC endpoint: http://jrpc.testnet.quarkchain.io:38391 Developer guide: https://goo.gl/JzcXaU **In addition, we just opened QuarkChain’s official developer community on Discord. Feel free to join us and discuss up-to-date blockchain technologies with hackers! Here is the invitation: https://discord.gg/gVYRazf** #### 6. DREP is one of the strategic partners of QuarkChain. Could you name some other strategic partners? How DREP and QuarkChain will work together? What do you think about the most important about DREP? Will QuarkChain use DREP’s reputation system in the future? We have nearly 40 partners such as Ankr, Celer Network and Certik. For more information about our partners in the ecosystem, you could check here: https://medium.com/quarkchain-official/quarkchain-ecosystem-progress-report-no-1-9404d325cbae Our CEO, Qi Zhou, joined DREP Foundation as an advisor about two months ago. We will collaboratively continue to share protocol architecture and promote interoperability between blockchain networks and internet platforms. We believe DREP's solution can help lots of SMB to share business resources in the future, and we will put our efforts to support projects such as DREP to list on great ex-platforms and keep a long-term close relationship. And we are very open and flexible to adopt any new technologies. #### 7. Recently, QuarkChain has announced Eco-fund. Could you please tell us more about it? We are now raising the $50,000,000 Eco-fund to build a collaborative and open ecosystem of QuarkChain. The reason why we do so is that we believe in the bear market, startups need more supports from us just like we did before. Generally, an Eco-fund is focusing more on the short-term and middle-term (1-2 years or 2-3 years) development of projects whereas our foundation will think more about long-term strategies. You can check more details about our Ecosystem at: #### 8. What are next milestones of QuarkChain? And what are the QuarkChain next events with community? Our next milestone will be open source and testnet 2.0. We also will have a hackathon in Russia soon. Please stay tuned and follow our Telegram news channel (https://t.me/QuarkChain_News) if you can. Even though the blockchain industry is in its early stage and just a few people benefit from it now, we will imagine that the blockchain technology will become a tool for our daily life usage. For example, in the future people could use blockchain to make payment, to sign and storage housing purchasing contract, and even to vote. There are also possibilities for new business models that we never thought before, just like how YouTube, Facebook come into reality after the invention and prosperity of the Internet. Therefore, I believe in the decentralized world, sharding solution is not unique. For the second question, our technology is quite different from Zilliqa's as we enable state sharding by cluster, where a cheap node in a cluster would only need to store the local shard ledger. However, Zilliqa only offers transaction sharding, where all nodes must maintain the full ledger of the network. ### FYI: 1. We just opened QuarkChain’s official developer community on Discord. Feel free to join us and discuss up-to-date blockchain technologies with other hackers! Here is the link: https://discord.gg/gVYRazf 2. "title": "QuarkChain AMA in DREP Community Summary - 08/20/2018",
"body": "QuarkChain was very honored to hold an AMA (Ask Me Anything) in DREP Community on Aug 20, 2018. This is the summary for the AMA on Aug 20. Through this joint AMA in the partner's community, our relationship has been further strengthened. \n\n### Part 1: Non-technical Questions\n\n#### 1. Introduction to QuarkChain core team members\n(1). Anthurine Xiang\nQuarkChain CMO\nFinance, consulting and technology background\nSix years of work experience in Wall Street and Silicon Valley\nWorked in Argus, LinkedIn, Wish, etc.\n\n(2). Qi Zhou\nQuarkChain Founder and CEO\nPh.D. from Georgia Tech\nExpert in high-performance systems\nWorked at Google and Facebook\nFifteen years of experience in software development \n\n(3). Ting Du\nQuarkChain CBO\nExpert in data and product management, a veteran in investment and business incubation\nWorked in NHN China, UniDT and Liuhe Capital, focusing on blockchain ecosystem establishment and business application research\n\n#### 2. What are the daily operations of the team?\nWe have several teams in different areas including Engineering, Marketing, and Business Development, and each team has its own operational model. We are mainly based in Silicon Valley, but we also have offices in Korea and China.\n\n#### 3. What is QuarkChain? How is it different from other public chains?\nQuarkChain, a decentralized, secure, scalable, and permissionless blockchain technology to deliver high on-chain TPS (more than 100K) by using horizontal scale technology.\n\n(1). Decentralized - There are two aspects associated with decentralized: \na) From the miners perspective, a weak miner can produce a block in a shard with relatively weak difficulty; \nb) From the node perspective, QuarkChain allows multiple cheap nodes forming a cluster to replace a super-full node. Thus, QuarkChain can produce higher throughput. QuarkChain network also offers more shards which are relatively easier to mine or mint (via PoW or PoS).\n\n(2). Secure - To enable security, QuarkChain builds a root-chain that a) with high hash power; b) protects all shards, and thus all transactions of all shards are protected by root-chain. Concretely, with our two-layered blockchain structure, the root-chain layer will confirm all blocks from sharded blockchains by PoW that secures all the shards (and thus all transactions in the shards) with a large portion of the hash power of the network.\n\n(3). Scalable - Scalability is mainly by adding more shards in the network. There are two kinds of scale: Vertical Scale and Horizontal Scale. QuarkChain uses the latter one, which is widely used in large companies such as Google for years. Theoretically, whenever the capacity is not enough, add more shards and more nodes, the capacity can be significantly scaled.\n\nThus, from the business perspective, QuarkChain can provide a more open, scalable and suitable ecosystem for business applications.\n\n#### 4. I knew that QuarkChain released its testnet in July. Congrats! What’s the performance of it?\n(1). Here is the detailed article about testnet: \nhttps://medium.com/quarkchain-official/quarkchain-testnet-1-0-bottom-quark-2ee8665ce5b1\n\n(2). Here is the demo of testnet:\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUldrq3zKwE&feature=youtu.be\n\n(3). Testnet parameters overview\nNo. of Shards: 256\nNo. of Clusters: 50\nCluster Structure: 1 root node, 128 shard nodes (root nodes are responsible for handling and storing of cross-shard transactions)\nTotal nodes in the network: 6450 = 129 x 50 (distributed amongst East/West America, Asia, Europe, etc.)\nTPS: 10,000+ (peak TPS in the live demo: 14,000+)\nTestnet:https://quarkchain.io/\n\n#### 5. QuarkChain also launched its first open-source client library. Did anyone use it? \nOur engineering team has developed and open sourced our first client library for QuarkChain. Feel free to email [email protected]_ for any question or feedback.**\n\nGitHub: https://github.com/QuarkChain/quarkchain-web3.js\nnpm: https://www.npmjs.com/package/quarkchain-web3\nTestnet (now supports MetaMask): https://testnet.quarkchain.io\nTestnet JSON RPC endpoint: http://jrpc.testnet.quarkchain.io:38391\nDeveloper guide: https://goo.gl/JzcXaU\n\n**In addition, we just opened QuarkChain’s official developer community on Discord. Feel free to join us and discuss up-to-date blockchain technologies with hackers! Here is the invitation: https://discord.gg/gVYRazf**\n\n#### 6. DREP is one of the strategic partners of QuarkChain. Could you name some other strategic partners? How DREP and QuarkChain will work together? What do you think about the most important about DREP? Will QuarkChain use DREP’s reputation system in the future?\n\nWe have nearly 40 partners such as Ankr, Celer Network and Certik. For more information about our partners in the ecosystem, you could check here: https://medium.com/quarkchain-official/quarkchain-ecosystem-progress-report-no-1-9404d325cbae\n\nOur CEO, Qi Zhou, joined DREP Foundation as an advisor about two months ago. \n\n#### 7. Recently, QuarkChain has announced Eco-fund. Could you please tell us more about it?\nWe are now raising the $50,000,000 Eco-fund to build a collaborative and open ecosystem of QuarkChain. The reason why we do so is that we believe in the bear market, startups need more supports from us just like we did before. Generally, an Eco-fund is focusing more on the short-term and middle-term (1-2 years or 2-3 years) development of projects whereas our foundation will think more about long-term strategies.\n\nYou can check more details about our Ecosystem at:\n\n#### 8. What are next milestones of QuarkChain? And what are the QuarkChain next events with community?\nOur next milestone will be open source and testnet 2.0. When testnet 2.0 is launched, everyone is able to join the network and offer the hash power to produce blocks, which will further help us to verify our system and attract more community members to join us.\nIn terms of upcoming events, we do have lots of offline meetup plans in South Asia, South Korea, Russia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Europe in the coming months. We also will have a hackathon in Russia soon. Please stay tuned and follow our Telegram news channel (https://t.me/QuarkChain_News) if you can.\n\n\n#### 9. What are the challenges QuarkChain will face before the scheduled release of mainnet and how do you intend to address these challenges?\nThe major challenge is that for any new blockchain technology, it needs time to verify since the blockchain area is still an experimental technology. To clear uncertainties during the phase, we have to work extremely and have our community to work with us.\n\n#### 10. How do you see the future of blockchain industry?\nEven though the blockchain industry is in its early stage and just a few people benefit from it now, we will imagine that the blockchain technology will become a tool for our daily life usage. For example, in the future people could use blockchain to make payment, to sign and storage housing purchasing contract, and even to vote. There are also possibilities for new business models that we never thought before, just like how YouTube, Facebook come into reality after the invention and prosperity of the Internet.\n\n### Part 2: Technical Questions\n\n#### 1. Will QuarkChain has its own language in the future or will it be using Solidity?\nQuarkChain is able to support different VMs and even different consensus algorithms in the future. Using new VMs shouldn't be difficult, and we may develop our own Smart Contract language if necessary.\n\n#### 2. For sharding, is it the only way of working as in getting scalability to work or can it work in various ways of sharding as Zilliqa and QuarkChain have different approaches to make sharding work? \nFor the first question, sharding is an idea rather than a single solution. For example, Google has Google's sharding solution whereas Facebook has Facebook's. Even different products may need different sharding solutions in centralized systems. Therefore, I believe in the decentralized world, sharding solution is not unique.\n\nFor the second question, our technology is quite different from Zilliqa's as we enable state sharding by cluster, where a cheap node in a cluster would only need to store the local shard ledger. However, Zilliqa only offers transaction sharding, where all nodes must maintain the full ledger of the network.\n\n### FYI:\n\n1. We just opened QuarkChain’s official developer community on Discord. Feel free to join us and discuss up-to-date blockchain technologies with other hackers!\nHere is the link: https://discord.gg/gVYRazf\n\n2. | title | QuarkChain Bi-weekly Project Progress Report: Aug 6 - Aug 19 |
| body | Welcome to the 12th QuarkChain Bi-weekly Report for the period from Aug 6th to Aug 19th! For better communications with our community, we’ll be updating our progress every other week. ## 1. Offline Activities ### 1.1. Demo Day QuarkChain participated in the Demo Day organized by X Separator in Silicon Valley last week. (https://www.pscp.tv/w/1yNGaXPkeMRKj) In this event, we gave a brief introduction of QuarkChain including scalability history, our sharding solution, and progress. Then we went through the public testnet with basic functionalities including balance transfer, network topology, smart contract, etc. We also answered many questions regarding how hash power is distributed and how the root-chain handles double-spend attacks. After this event, we were invited to give more detailed technical talks to engineers next month. QuarkChain aims to spread blockchain technology to broader fields and hopes to build a more prosperous blockchain ecosystem with other projects. ### 1.2. Crypto2018 Conference QuarkChain attended Crypto 2018 Conference in Santa Barbara this week. During the “Decentralized cryptocurrencies and blockchains” session, we have learned several new technical progress from Ethereum, Algorand, Stellar, Zcash, Thunderella, Lightning Network, and OasisLab. We also raised several questions regarding PoS online requirements and PoW forking impact on the fast path of Thunderella. We also discussed offline with David Mazières from Stanford University, Mo Dong, the co-founder of Celer Network, and Vitalik, the founder of Ethereum. Having top elites of blockchain field gathering together and discussing blockchain technologies in multi-angle and full aspects together, this conference has shed the light of the bright future of blockchain. ## 2. Ecosystem Partnership ### 2.1. QuarkChain Has Built Ecosystem Partnership With JRR Portfolio Eco Alliance QuarkChain built a deep ecosystem partnership with JRR Portfolio Eco Alliance this Friday. A signing ceremony has been held in Beijing at the same time. QuarkChain claimed that it wanted to build a long-term strategic relationship with JRR Portfolio Eco Alliance to get a mutual benefit and achieve a win-win situation. Both sides stated that they should actively share resources of ecosystem partners and other resources in the primary and secondary markets. Besides, they will actively introduce high-quality projects to each other, and conduct joint investment/incubation. Moreover, they will invite each other to co-host or attend large and small events such as industry conferences in the future. In addition, both sides will work together to share media resources and promote each other. This strategic collaboration between QuarkChain and JRR Portfolio Eco Alliance is an important part of the ecosystem construction for both sides. For QuarkChain, this is also the first time to include investors in its ecosystem. QuarkChain will work with more eco-partners globally to provide a complete blockchain-based ecosystem service system in the future. We strongly believe that the joint of two ecosystem alliances will equip QuarkChain with more energy. ## 3. New Face Mr. Qiang Zhu is one of the members of the QuarkChain engineering team. Before joining QuarkChain, Qiang was the R & D Director of Camera 360. Before Camera 360, Qiang worked at Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for five years. His rich work experience has made him a senior software developer. Qiang obtained his Bachelor Degree in Applied Mathematics and Master Degree in Information Security from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. As an enthusiast in cryptography and information security for a long time, Qiang has paid attention to blockchain from its early stage and chose to join QuarkChain to make his contribution to this field. ## 4. Development Progress 1. Published QuarkChain Developer page as the main hub for QuarkChain developers, with an introduction to QuarkChain concepts and detailed JSON RPC tutorial 2. Redesigned QuarkChain cluster configuration, now supporting configuration files in addition to command-line parameters 3. Improved logging and added statistics collection for monitoring and performance improvement purposes 4. Improved deployment tools for starting up and managing QuarkChain testnets on AWS 5. Added support for eth_getLogs()-like functionalities in QuarkChain core 6. Set up developer community in Discord. Discord is a group chat application with web and native app support that is more open to the general developer community QuarkChain Discord Developer Community: https://discord.gg/4VtjNRF QuarkChain Developer Page: https://developers.quarkchain.io/ **FYI:** 1. We just opened QuarkChain’s official developer community on Discord. Feel free to join us and discuss up-to-date blockchain technologies with other hackers!
