titleDisrupting the disruptor. A look at how Skycoin alters the crypto trajectory.
body![disrupt1.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRTFmU3GJb7rYgcEGegpg1AncNRCCBgsMZUj4hseSVroz/disrupt1.jpeg) "Disruptive technologies are like natural disasters. They come out of nowhere, are unstoppable, and leave a radically altered landscape in their wake. This is invariably bad news for the status quo but in the wake of their destruction, something magical happens. Nature abhors a vacuum and will endeavour to rapidly re-establish a complex and resilient ecosystem in the place of that which has been destroyed. From an evolutionary perspective, these disasters are opportunities to adapt and strengthen the system based on experience gained. From this perspective, disruption drives the evolution of natural ecosystems and it is no different in the case of technological and business ecosystems. *“The breakthrough of Bitcoin is that, suddenly, you can send something digital to somebody else, just as I can hand you a DVD or ten dollar bill if you are standing next to me, without the need for any kind of middleman. It sounds simple enough, but it is a huge breakthrough — and it has huge implications for privacy and for efficiency. Behind it all is something Satoshi dubbed the blockchain. The disruptive implications of an entirely new money system that achieves widespread adoption are, of course, enormous. But the tech goes beyond money.” — Dominic Frisbey* Bitcoin and, by extension blockchain, is widely considered to be such a disruptive technology. In a post on Virgin Entrepreneur, financial author Dominic Frisbey who wrote “Bitcoin, the future of money?” postulates that Bitcoin will do to banking what the cell phone did to telecoms. Cell phones radically altered the landscape by lowering the entry bar to telecoms for Billions of people, giving them instant access to a phone and pre-paid card. Blockchain and cryptocurrencies are doing the same thing for the great unbanked. Suddenly they are able to send money anywhere in the world at low cost without having to jump through administrative hoops. In countries such as Venezuela and Zimbabwe where Government currencies went into hyperinflation, the general population quickly started gravitating towards cryptocurrencies despite the volatility of the crypto markets. Clearly, the seemingly wild swings of crypto are preferable to the rapid implosion of fiat. There is a lot of speculation about which industries will be disrupted most by Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies but there seems to be consensus on banking, communications, gaming, news, advertising, and health being first in line to experience major Blockchain driven upheaval. This is open to debate though but whether correct or not, the point is that Blockchain is set to disrupt and, in several cases, is already disrupting incumbent industries. Let us assume this latter statement to be correct for the purpose of this article. ![disrupt2.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeiypE1VR4kQ2R7zUsCJEnP6vmm5G3hbPEM52MYfdecPB/disrupt2.jpeg) If we extrapolate patterns of disruption from case studies of technologies that successfully disrupted industries, it becomes possible to spot disrupters fairly early on. Three of these principals that have been identified by norrup are known as; - Mainstream underperformance - Niche/Emergent market performance - The innovator’s dilemma Considering that we are witnessing a major disruption in the process of unfolding, let us now narrow our gaze from the broad perspective of the industries being disrupted and limit our focus to the Blockchain and Distributed Ledger technology vertical, in other words, the disruptor. By overlaying the disrupting vertical with the pattern filters given above and focusing on Skycoin within that context, we should be able to spot disruptive elements embedded within the disruptive trajectory of Blockchain. __Filter 1. Mainstream underperformance__ *Disruptive technologies typically underperform established technologies in mainstream markets and underperform on the criteria valued by the mainstream consumer.* Since we are for the purposes of this exercise assuming the emergent Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Industry to be mainstream, I will evaluate Skycoin against well-established and successful cryptocurrencies as measured by a financial metric. Skycoin is currently rated at number 209 on Coinmarketcap in terms of Dollar based market capitalisation. While this is not severe underperformance given that Coinmarketcap lists in excess of 2000 coins, given the maturity of the Skycoin project, it’s scope, and the consistency with which it delivers, such a low rating indicates a tremendous undervalued asset that is performing well below it’s potential. It would be safe to say that Skycoin is definitely underperforming in the mainstream. __Filter 2. Niche/Emergent market performance.__ *Products based on disruptive technologies are generally simpler, more convenient and cheaper to use than mainstream products and offers features that are valued by people outside mainstream markets.* Skycoin transactions are instantly confirmed and are free of charge. These characteristics render Skycoin both cheaper and more convenient to use than competing technology. In terms of offering features that appeal to people outside of mainstream markets, the Skycoin ecosystem brings a plethora of innovative offerings to market, the value of which is hardly recognised by the mainstream crypto consumer at this time. These include a privacy-centric incentivised Internet known as [Skywire](https://medium.com/skyfleet-captains-log/skycoin-demystified-part-2-skywire-935370a90c84), a turing complete Blockchain programming language [known as CX](https://www.skycoin.net/cx/), immutable distributed object storage [known as CXO](https://www.skycoin.net/cxo/), a parallel inflationary currency generated by the base currency called [Coinhours,](https://medium.com/skyfleet-captains-log/skycoin-demystified-part-3-coin-hours-780b20bd39a1) and [Fiber,]( https://www.skycoin.net/fiber/)a theoretically infinitely scalable Blockchain platform based on hyperthreading. __Filter 3. The innovator’s dilemma__ *Disruptive technologies will appear incapable and inferior to a firm or intellectual mind serving mainstream customers.* Skycoin has been on the receiving end of more than its fair share of criticism by mainstream crypto players commenting from their incumbent perspective. Most of them simply failed to see and comprehend the innovation that the project brings to the table. In extreme cases, Skycoin was even called a scam and suffered coordinated FUD attacks from competing projects. Having used the pattern identification tools, the picture that emerges for me is one of nestled disruption. While Blockchain is going about its business of disrupting several industries, Skycoin is quietly incubating a tropical storm of immense proportions that will tear through the crypto industry to permanently alter the landscape for the better.

"body": "![disrupt1.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRTFmU3GJb7rYgcEGegpg1AncNRCCBgsMZUj4hseSVroz/disrupt1.jpeg)\n\n\"Disruptive technologies are like natural disasters. From this perspective, disruption drives the evolution of natural ecosystems and it is no different in the case of technological and business ecosystems.\n\n*“The breakthrough of Bitcoin is that, suddenly, you can send something digital to somebody else, just as I can hand you a DVD or ten dollar bill if you are standing next to me, without the need for any kind of middleman. It sounds simple enough, but it is a huge breakthrough — and it has huge implications for privacy and for efficiency. Behind it all is something Satoshi dubbed the blockchain. The disruptive implications of an entirely new money system that achieves widespread adoption are, of course, enormous. But the tech goes beyond money.” — Dominic Frisbey*\n\nBitcoin and, by extension blockchain, is widely considered to be such a disruptive technology. Clearly, the seemingly wild swings of crypto are preferable to the rapid implosion of fiat.\n\nThere is a lot of speculation about which industries will be disrupted most by Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies but there seems to be consensus on banking, communications, gaming, news, advertising, and health being first in line to experience major Blockchain driven upheaval. This is open to debate though but whether correct or not, the point is that Blockchain is set to disrupt and, in several cases, is already disrupting incumbent industries. Let us assume this latter statement to be correct for the purpose of this article.\n\n![disrupt2.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeiypE1VR4kQ2R7zUsCJEnP6vmm5G3hbPEM52MYfdecPB/disrupt2.jpeg)\n\nIf we extrapolate patterns of disruption from case studies of technologies that successfully disrupted industries, it becomes possible to spot disrupters fairly early on. Three of these principals that have been identified by norrup are known as; \n- Mainstream underperformance \n- Niche/Emergent market performance\n- The innovator’s dilemma\n\nConsidering that we are witnessing a major disruption in the process of unfolding, let us now narrow our gaze from the broad perspective of the industries being disrupted and limit our focus to the Blockchain and Distributed Ledger technology vertical, in other words, the disruptor. By overlaying the disrupting vertical with the pattern filters given above and focusing on Skycoin within that context, we should be able to spot disruptive elements embedded within the disruptive trajectory of Blockchain.\n\n__Filter 1. Mainstream underperformance__\n*Disruptive technologies typically underperform established technologies in mainstream markets and underperform on the criteria valued by the mainstream consumer.*\n\nSince we are for the purposes of this exercise assuming the emergent Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Industry to be mainstream, I will evaluate Skycoin against well-established and successful cryptocurrencies as measured by a financial metric. Skycoin is currently rated at number 209 on Coinmarketcap in terms of Dollar based market capitalisation. While this is not severe underperformance given that Coinmarketcap lists in excess of 2000 coins, given the maturity of the Skycoin project, it’s scope, and the consistency with which it delivers, such a low rating indicates a tremendous undervalued asset that is performing well below it’s potential.\n\nIt would be safe to say that Skycoin is definitely underperforming in the mainstream.\n\n__Filter 2. Niche/Emergent market performance.__\n*Products based on disruptive technologies are generally simpler, more convenient and cheaper to use than mainstream products and offers features that are valued by people outside mainstream markets.*\n\nSkycoin transactions are instantly confirmed and are free of charge. These characteristics render Skycoin both cheaper and more convenient to use than competing technology.\nIn terms of offering features that appeal to people outside of mainstream markets, the Skycoin ecosystem brings a plethora of innovative offerings to market, the value of which is hardly recognised by the mainstream crypto consumer at this time. These include a privacy-centric incentivised Internet known as [Skywire](https://medium.com/skyfleet-captains-log/skycoin-demystified-part-2-skywire-935370a90c84), a turing complete Blockchain programming language [known as CX](https://www.skycoin.net/cx/), immutable distributed object storage [known as CXO](https://www.skycoin.net/cxo/), a parallel inflationary currency generated by the base currency called [Coinhours,](https://medium.com/skyfleet-captains-log/skycoin-demystified-part-3-coin-hours-780b20bd39a1) and [Fiber,]( https://www.skycoin.net/fiber/)a theoretically infinitely scalable Blockchain platform based on hyperthreading.\n\n__Filter 3. The innovator’s dilemma__\n*Disruptive technologies will appear incapable and inferior to a firm or intellectual mind serving mainstream customers.*\n\nSkycoin has been on the receiving end of more than its fair share of criticism by mainstream crypto players commenting from their incumbent perspective. Most of them simply failed to see and comprehend the innovation that the project brings to the table. In extreme cases, Skycoin was even called a scam and suffered coordinated FUD attacks from competing projects.\n\nHaving used the pattern identification tools, the picture that emerges for me is one of nestled disruption. While Blockchain is going about its business of disrupting several industries, Skycoin is quietly incubating a tropical storm of immense proportions that will tear through the crypto industry to permanently alter the landscape for the better.",

titleWhy it matters that Skycoin is the sole remaining anti-establishment coin.
bodyTake a moment to consider the crypto-landscape as we know it today. From a certain perspective, it is viewed as a security. From another, it is a speculative commodity that’s value lies in its very existence and as such, a golden opportunity for trading. Professional traders and analysts publish ideas and predictions for cryptocurrencies while peddling buy and sell signals on the side. News channels are awash with the latest updates on the possibility of Bitcoin Exchange Traded Funds (ETF’s). Many consider the approval of a Bitcoin ETF by the SEC to be the highest potential catalyst for the next crypto bull run. Wait….what? ![ant1.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWgHJfxQmZsiKVjfvSBE8xJwL4jMNX7dgxmDvqr9hsrT2/ant1.jpeg) I have to ask myself how it came about that Bitcoin and the SEC are even mentioned in the same sentence? On the one hand, we have the SEC, bastion of centralised authority over the market and on the other, we have Bitcoin, love child of cypherpunk and agorism. An orphan raised by crypto-anarchists to resist the tyranny of central banking and become the liberator of the debt-shackled masses struggling under the yoke of inflationary currency. Surely the paradox of Bitcoin’s further success hinging on an SEC decision qualifies for the title of most marvellous irony ever? How did this come about? When did the conqueror turn into the conquered, meekly moving sideways week after week, waiting for its masters at the SEC to cast a crumb from the table? What was it that vanquished the valour of the decentralised avenging angel and bent his knee before the powers that be? Where do we cast the blame for this dismal state of affairs? The answer dear reader is us. You and me. The crypto enthusiasts who lost sight of the ideals by which Blockchain was spawned. We became so blinded by the glare of accumulated fiat that we forgot the true value of crypto. Satoshi’s real gift to humanity was the means to decide for ourselves what we deem truly valuable. Like the Midas of myth, we squandered the infinite potential of that most precious gift on greed and just like Midas, we now find ourselves beleaguered by the ramifications of our own choice. *“Price doesn’t matter. It is an output variable” — Synth* The lead developer and co-founder of Skycoin, known as Synth, is often quoted in reference to many things crypto. His skills as an analyst are widely respected and his understanding of the forces that shape the global economy is profound. In the humble opinion of this writer though, the eight words quoted above epitomises wisdom as it pertains to cryptocurrency. It succinctly summarizes the flaw in our philosophical approach to crypto which, hitherto has been to use it as a means to accumulate fiat currency. We are literally using the very tool meant to free us from the death grip of centralised, controlled currency to accumulate more of same. Simply put, crypto was sold out to the establishment by its own users. As long as we use fiat currency as the metric by which we measure the worth of our cryptocurrency, we are under the control of those who control fiat currency. The net worth in fiat of certain individuals is more than the entire crypto market cap. Let that sink in for a moment. These people manipulate global markets before breakfast. It is a trivial matter for these manipulators to pump and dump crypto markets and to sway markets to suit their agenda. No crypto bull run no matter how long it lasts will ever afford us the power to compete with the fiat establishment on its own turf. Sure, a handful of early crypto adopters made millions of Dollars but that is a drop in the ocean compared to the collective fiat wealth of the establishment. What is needed to tip the scales in favour of freedom is for us to stop speculating with crypto and to start creating an actual crypto economy based on real-world, in-demand commodities. The value of a cryptocurrency should not be measured by how much fiat currency someone is willing to pay for it. It should be measured by what goods and services you can obtain with that cryptocurrency without having to first sell it for fiat. We should start using the usability of a cryptocurrency as it’s evaluation metric if we want to see crypto emerge from the sphere of establishment influence and realise its true, full potential. Of course, there has to be a transition phase. Costs associated with developing a cryptocurrency cannot always be paid in crypto. Landlords, ISP’s and other parasitic entities are notoriously addicted to fiat currency and as such, it is necessary to have the means to exchange crypto for fiat to satisfy their needs in the interim. We should guard against becoming completely entangled in the crypto-as-a-means-to-fiat paradigm though because that is kryptonite to our hero. ![ant2.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPvrPHCrqoQcRf3t9J3FrFrfqai9QvkUYaG6L5Mmxsdqt/ant2.jpeg) I imagine it would be a safe assumption that most of us brave or foolish enough to have ventured into the stormy crypto seas at this early stage have done so fully aware of the mathematical inevitability of the eventual floundering of the fiat ship. Why then do we insist on tethering our little lifeboats to this fiat juggernaut that is taking on water at an alarming rate? The behemoth is going down sooner or later and I for one would like to be rowing somewhere well away from its wake when it does. Furthermore, I most certainly want to to be doing so on the sturdiest lifeboat available and in my opinion, that is Skycoin. Skycoin flies in the face of the establishment and its tentacles of control. As a project, it can be considered to be a living embodiment of the ideals of decentralisation and freedom that are implicit principles of distributed ledger technologies. Unlike most cryptocurrencies out there, Skycoin’s developers had the foresight and vision to create a cryptocurrency that will retain the core principles of decentralisation no matter how widely it is adopted and it certainly is technologically capable of mass adoption. Skycoin solved the major technical obstacles to mass crypto adoption. It is hugely scalable with virtually instant transaction confirmations that are free of charge. The core currency is nestled in an ecosystem of supporting elements such as a programming language, distributed object storage, a parallel currency derived from the primary one, and a platform for issuing tokens. Arguably the most radical component of the Skycoin ecosystem though is Skywire, the new Internet. At a time when the ringed fence of the state is busy strangling Internet freedom to death, Skywire constitutes a shining beacon beckoning to those who comprehend just how critical the free flow of information is to resisting a dystopian future. Skywire is a truly decentralised, fully encrypted, community owned and driven Internet where our data is safe from surveillance. That alone should be reason enough to use it but the true genius of Skywire lies in the fact that, along with Skycoin, it lays the foundation for a crypto economy based on an in-demand, real-world commodity. Censorship-free, unsurveiled bandwidth is becoming highly sought after and that is exactly what Skycoin delivers. ![ant3.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUetPR6pKNp6eqB2f4jf19wGMLa3gNRtY8vjo9UVbzoxx/ant3.jpeg) Who cares about the BTC:USD currency pair when we have in Skycoin the means of a working model to establish a virtual utopia independently of the state’s mechanisms of control? Skycoin carries forward the anti-establishment ideals that spawned Bitcoin but in an infinitely more practical manner and with a much wider scope. If you haven’t figured it out by now, the establishment is not your friend, the state is not working in your favour and the mechanisms of its control are coveted to your own detriment. Sure Bitcoin will be worth $1 000 000 in future. There is no doubt that as soon as the fiat currency Ponzi scheme implodes, all crypto will go to the moon but it will mean nothing because the fiat metric that you are using to measure your path to the moon will be obsolete. When that fools rocket takes off, would it not be infinitely wiser to be safely ensconced in an established, truly decentralised, freedom-centric, control and censorship free economy? This is the opportunity that Skycoin offers right now. Let those who have ears hear and those who have eyes see. That is all.

titleDriving home a final nail in the Skycoin kidnapping FUD coffin — The court papers.
bodyOne of the most often repeated FUD stories pertaining to Skycoin is the so-called fake kidnapping that took place in 2018. Fudders spread a rumour that the event was fabricated by the Skycoin team as a pretext for dumping a large number of coins on the Binance crypto exchange. Set against the backdrop of all the other FUD, [much of which was paid for by rival coins](https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/au0943/lost_94_of_my_capital_over_100k_mostly_due_to/) this story was spread far and wide and one still occasionally encounters it in forums or chat groups. May this piece then serve to help put this lie to rest once and for all. ![court1.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTFmteHS1PXWAN2Mw7Feomxo6vTXQAAyQX1v5KzooEgHY/court1.png) The events leading up the conviction of the criminals by the People’s Court, Jing’an District, Shang Hai are, to the best of my knowledge, as follows; In a nutshell, Chinese marketing company, Evolab was employed by Skycoin to market the project in China and to build a Chinese userbase and community. Over time, Evolab became an intrinsic part of the Skycoin team and as such certain business processes were absorbed by them to varying degrees. The movement of a fair amount of coins designated as developer bonuses as well as sales to investors was entrusted to Evolab. When developers complained to senior staff that they didn’t receive their bonuses, a forensic audit was called for by members of management who suspected foul play on behalf of Evolabs staff. This caused certain members of the Evolab team to panic and on the evening of June 12, 2018 members of the Evolab team entered the home of Skycoin’s lead developer, Synth, and his girlfriend Li Shenyang where they threatened them, assaulted them and forced them to hand over 18.88 Bitcoin as well as 6600 Skycoin from Synth’s personal account to the attackers. This is in addition to several hundred thousand Skycoin that was at that time locked down due to disputes about rightful ownership and that was released to the attackers who eventually left the apartment at 3 AM. This version of events is corroborated by the court papers. ![court3.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmagZFH7HQyN2ja3fg3HeWNiUtqFV33LexmAX1u93vMfjp/court3.png) The incident was reported to the American embassy as well as to the Chinese police who opened a docket and subsequently arrested three of the perpetrators namely; Yan Xingdon, Sam Sing Fong, and Sun Fei on June 20. A fourth, Li Min, handed herself over to the police. Due to the serious nature of the charges, all the perpetrators remained in custody until the 30'th of November 2018 when they appeared in court and their trial commenced. By then, the attackers had already dumped large amounts of Skycoin on Binance. According to the court papers, none of the accused contested the charges levelled against them and instead pleaded guilty in the hope of receiving a more lenient sentence. This is a highly pertinent point. Not one of the perpetrators contested the facts as it was put before the court. They did not at any time even attempt to dispute the version of events put forth by the witnesses and victims statements. If, as certain fudders are alleging, the event was fabricated then surely the victims of such a fabrication would at least attempt to defend themselves and put forth their version of events. If it was a fabricated event then surely they would have been able to submit evidence in support of their story. Instead, they unanimously accepted the charges and in so doing, confirmed Synth and Li’s story. ![court4.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbrqMzh1we2sksWPCZtQVgdghtctLb79rQk5phnz4i3X5/court4.png) The court considered all the evidence and found all four defendants guilty of illegally detaining and assaulting Synth and his girlfriend based on the facts of the matter. They were sentenced to between 7 and 8 months imprisonment each. The time spent in detention while awaiting trial was to be deducted from their sentences. ![court5.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcoMnzmvN517bCEndoEdd2UtijnicMgQXyp9YpTJu6bgi/court5.png) So there we have it. A court of law examined the case and found the event to be true as told by the victims. Members of the Evolab team assaulted and detained Synth, stole coins and went to prison for their crimes. The proof is available for anyone to examine for themselves in the form of a public court record that can be obtained from the court archives but in case you want to examine them and don’t feel like taking a trip to China, a copy can be viewed [here.](https://anonfile.com/Hag4AdU5m4/1_4945350203608662217_pdf) Following the tsunami of FUD that was unleashed on Skycoin, community members took it upon themselves to lay the facts of this and other FUD stories bare for examination by the public at large. A [website was specifically created]( https://www.skyfud.com/)for this purpose and it is well worth a visit by anybody researching Skycoin.

The proof is available for anyone to examine for themselves in the form of a public court record that can be obtained from the court archives but in case you want to examine them and don’t feel like taking a trip to China, a copy can be viewed [here.](https://anonfile.com/Hag4AdU5m4/1_4945350203608662217_pdf)\nFollowing the tsunami of FUD that was unleashed on Skycoin, community members took it upon themselves to lay the facts of this and other FUD stories bare for examination by the public at large. A [website was specifically created]( https://www.skyfud.com/)for this purpose and it is well worth a visit by anybody researching Skycoin.",

titlePicking a winner in the post-shitcoin shakedown cryptoverse.
bodyIt was a wild ride. A rollercoaster alternately fuelled by hype, FOMO, and extreme panic selling. Fortunes were made. ICO’s were launched for everything from in-game tokens to shares in woodlots and DNA databases. Blockchain was the buzzword and the public bought in. Big time. Due diligence was thrown to the wind and fools rushed in where angels feared to tread. At the height of the bubble, the crypto market cap topped out around $750 billion. Then a loud POP! The bubble burst and market cap dropped to around $130 billion where it bottomed out. Rekt became a word…… ![decoins1.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPfR4BmgpVJ8cN2Ehw7pnCM858GqD4xuYNYyqggFgjcbj/decoins1.jpeg) While many early adopters are still up, in some cases by 1000 and more times, many more saw their investments shrink to a few percent of it’s original worth and some even saw it disappear in one of the many scams which abound. [Deadcoins.com](https://deadcoins.com/) currently lists almost 1000 coins which are either deceased or have been revealed as a scam. As a relatively early Skycoin investor, I watched the pandemonium with great interest. Not to make light of anyone’s losses but seriously? What did people expect. Infinite growth is a fallacy (Take note economists — resources DO run out but I digress). Simply put, what accelerates up must correct and this correction is arguably the best thing that could have happened to crypto (I will elucidate, please bear with me). Skycoin’s lead developer, Synth, predicted this crash. I heard him talk about it in Shanghai more than a year ago before the bubble inflated in earnest. During the same presentation Synth made another prediction though. Perhaps prediction is the wrong word as it conjures up images of crystal balls and potions. Synth is an analyst with a profound comprehension of the world’s financial system, the forces which manipulate the world economy and the methods used to do so. Not the kind to dabble in crystal balls. Let us then call it a forecast. Synth forecasted the bubble followed by a crash or hypercorrection. He forecast that this will result in a massive shitcoin extinction and went on to say that the only blockchain projects to survive this cataclysm would be projects which hold actual value in the form of a real world commodity. I believe we are witnessing this forecast transpiring in the current market and the reason for it being a good thing is that the stage is now set for distributed ledger technologies to rise above the speculative hype and claim it’s place among the revolutionary technologies which changed the world as we know it. ![dedcoins2.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRTrGwsxbQWzVgJ6jE3eFTWvUvzupgkqBWo4ixJxhWD5Y/dedcoins2.jpeg) I feel a valid comparison would be the [dotcom bubble](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dot-com_bubble) back in the day when internet first became a thing. Everybody and his dog registered a domain for their company and HTML coders made a killing building web stores decorated with animated clipart gifs. Share prices in dotcom companies soared sky high as speculation fever gripped a public all to keen to throw money at this marvellous new technology. IPO’s for dotcom companies abounded. Then…. Pop! Crash! A massacre of on-line sales as well as communications companies ensued. Once the smoke cleared though, today’s Internet giants started to emerge. Amazon.com and eBay are good examples of survivors of the dotcom crash which went on to dominate the Internet landscape. Imagine for a moment you were an early investor in Amazon.com who rode the bull market up and then panic sold at a loss on the way down. It would be a safe assumption that you would be experiencing a fair amount of regret at not loading up on Amazon shares again during the dip. Well, the crypto market is now in that phase where the dotcom market found itself around 2001. The scams and weak hands have been mostly purged through the crash, the public have become more educated about the technology and the technology itself is maturing to the point where it is becoming possible to identify valid applications and make calculated guesses regarding which blockchain companies might emerge as the distributed ledger giants of tomorrow. Since it’s very inception, Skycoin adopted the philosophy that real world value should drive the coin and cleverly used Skywire to facilitate that value in the form of Bandwidth provided through the new, privacy-centric, incentivised, secure and decentralised, community owned Internet which they are busy deploying (Skywire testnet is fast approaching 10 000 nodes). The first requirement for emergence from the shakedown is most definitely met by Skycoin. A few other points to look for when picking that winning horse to back before the next bullrun are; * Does the project have it’s own Blockchain? I my opinion this is a minimum requirement for success in the post-bubble paradigm. Outsourcing your copywriting might be a good idea but as a distributed ledger technology provider, relying on someone else’s ledger puts you at a distinct disadvantage. Skycoin not only has it’s own blockchain but also secures it using it’s own revolutionary new consensus algorithm called Obelisk which makes POS and POW obsolete. Is the project’s code under active development? It is frightening how many successful coin ICO’s were launched backed by little more than a whitepaper, a web site and a glib PR person. Do your diligence. Five minutes on Github will show you how long the project has been committing code and how active it currently is. The Skycoin Git has 59 active repositories. When I checked their Git for this article, the latest commit was 12 minutes ago and the Skycoin core code had 7915 commits and 58 contributors. Rather active by anyones’ standards. ![decoins3.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmP24mCt9nUoaMtS79h4cEySFA8CzahcMGFvQRaMU6BdUY/decoins3.png) * How mature is the project? I think it is a reasonable assumption that a project which has been active in the crypto space for a longer period of time and which meets the other conditions above should have a better chance of succeeding not only due to knowledge and experienced gained within the space but also because the team has weathered a few storms and are still standing . Skycoin is one of the oldest projects in the cryptosphere dating back to 2012. Those who pay attention to such things might have noticed that the Bitcoin hashrate has been increasing steadily (translation: Lots of transactions meaning that people are using Bitcoin). With Lightning Network about to go live and being hyped by celebrities, we might very well be on the verge of another bull run, this time fuelled by real world adoption more than by speculation so get out there and select that winning horse.

titleDeadly consequences of centralised Internet in the hands of despots. The reality of a world without Skywire.
body![zim1.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWA72wVLzQatzeqReM2uWzRx7Q7rJUTkWYfd3MpG7uSur/zim1.png) Zimbabwe, Southern Africa. This landlocked country has known it’s fair share of troubles over the last few decades. Hyperinflation, caused by poor economic policies and a land reform program which saw agricultural outputs responsible for one third of the country’s foreign exchange earnings plummet to virtually zero, peaked at an estimated 500 Billion percent in 2008. As agricultural output plummeted, Robert Mugabe’s government printed vast amounts of Zimbabwe dollars in a doomed attempt to ride out the crisis. Shops raised prices several times a day and, in 2008, a 100-trillion-dollar note was introduced — though it could barely buy a loaf of bread as supplies ran out and the economy imploded. After several drastic devaluations, Zimbabwe abandoned its currency in 2009 in favour of the US dollar. The Zimbabwean economy is still in ruins with government unable to fund basic public services, rampant unemployment, and large scale emigration. Being the resourceful and resilient creatures which we humans are though, the people of Zimbabwe forged ahead and made do with whatever scarce US Dollar bills were available but more often than not economic activity was conducted through barter, informal trade and, interestingly, increasingly through crypto. The Zimbabwean Reserve Bank slapped a ban on cryptocurrencies but despite this, crypto thrived. Due to its inherent characteristics, cryptocurrencies have made the cut as a perfect means of exchange for 10 million Zimbabweans. In November 2017, a military coup saw Robert Mugabe removed from the presidency which he has been occupying for almost 40 years and replaced by Emerson Mnangagwa, former vice president and the main rival of Mugabe’s wife in the struggle to follow Mugabe as president. Life for ordinary Zimbabweans carried on as usual. Long queues for fuel and basic commodities were taken in stride while many families survived solely on the few Dollars which family members who were employed abroad managed to send home every month. Despite having to fork out for the second most expensive data in Africa at $25 per GB, ordinary Zimbabweans remained on line and in touch. All of this came to an abrupt end when their government announced a fuel price increase on the 14'th of January this year. This was no ordinary increase though. This was a 150% increase. Overnight fuel went from $1,34 per litre to $3.31 per litre and all hell broke loose. ![zim2.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmToVbPNzKfHGpGANKNipYHyztN1xiaiFQfFwsEXSmhb7c/zim2.jpeg) Thousands of Zimbabweans took to the streets to protest the increase and the resulting decline in standard of living and increasing poverty levels. Widespread civil unrest was coordinated via the Internet a-la the Arab spring and government responded by deploying police and military. Quickly reports of extreme violence perpetrated by the government forces started circulating which resulted in government ordering an Internet shutdown. While some tech savvy Zimbabweans managed to stay on line by using VPN’s, the majority found themselves cut off from each other and the world at large. This cloak of Internet silence provided the government with the cover it needed to do what governments do best. The jackboot of tyranny descended on the face of humanity. (Apologies to George Orwell). ![zim3.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbiBgx7kYC4inWiCU3BXgpdvHhpDhmdWDUWsYkRJ4EKe7/zim3.jpeg) [Riot police and the military were unleashed](http://time.com/5503010/zimbabwe-fuel-hike-protest-deaths/) on an unarmed population. Violent beatings were at the order of the day and live ammunition was used against protesting civilians. Reports in the main stream media were censored and the usual agenda of underplaying the reality of the situation was used. Media outlets reported 5 casualties to the world at large while the truth was conveniently kept at bay behind the Internet blackout curtain. The footage bellow was smuggled out of Zimbabwe during the Internet shutdown and shows truckloads of dead protesters. A far cry from the 5 casualties reported on by MSM. [(Warning: Graphic footage)](https://streamable.com/czx8q) hat transpired in Zimbabwe should serve as the sobering proof that, in the absence of a free and uncensored Internet, those in power can and will smite any and all who oppose their agenda. More often than not it is only the threat of public scrutiny which keeps tyranny in check. One can only Imagine how differently events would have unfolded if Skywire, the fully decentralised, encrypted and community owned Internet was deployed and fully operational in Zimbabwe……

After several drastic devaluations, Zimbabwe abandoned its currency in 2009 in favour of the US dollar.\nThe Zimbabwean economy is still in ruins with government unable to fund basic public services, rampant unemployment, and large scale emigration. Due to its inherent characteristics, cryptocurrencies have made the cut as a perfect means of exchange for 10 million Zimbabweans.\n\nIn November 2017, a military coup saw Robert Mugabe removed from the presidency which he has been occupying for almost 40 years and replaced by Emerson Mnangagwa, former vice president and the main rival of Mugabe’s wife in the struggle to follow Mugabe as president.\nLife for ordinary Zimbabweans carried on as usual. Overnight fuel went from $1,34 per litre to $3.31 per litre and all hell broke loose.\n\n![zim2.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmToVbPNzKfHGpGANKNipYHyztN1xiaiFQfFwsEXSmhb7c/zim2.jpeg)\n\n\nThousands of Zimbabweans took to the streets to protest the increase and the resulting decline in standard of living and increasing poverty levels. Widespread civil unrest was coordinated via the Internet a-la the Arab spring and government responded by deploying police and military. Quickly reports of extreme violence perpetrated by the government forces started circulating which resulted in government ordering an Internet shutdown.\nWhile some tech savvy Zimbabweans managed to stay on line by using VPN’s, the majority found themselves cut off from each other and the world at large. This cloak of Internet silence provided the government with the cover it needed to do what governments do best. The jackboot of tyranny descended on the face of humanity. (Apologies to George Orwell).\n![zim3.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbiBgx7kYC4inWiCU3BXgpdvHhpDhmdWDUWsYkRJ4EKe7/zim3.jpeg)\n\n[Riot police and the military were unleashed](http://time.com/5503010/zimbabwe-fuel-hike-protest-deaths/) on an unarmed population. \n\nThe footage bellow was smuggled out of Zimbabwe during the Internet shutdown and shows truckloads of dead protesters. A far cry from the 5 casualties reported on by MSM. \n\n[(Warning: Graphic footage)](https://streamable.com/czx8q)\n\nhat transpired in Zimbabwe should serve as the sobering proof that, in the absence of a free and uncensored Internet, those in power can and will smite any and all who oppose their agenda. More often than not it is only the threat of public scrutiny which keeps tyranny in check. One can only Imagine how differently events would have unfolded if Skywire, the fully decentralised, encrypted and community owned Internet was deployed and fully operational in Zimbabwe……",

bodyThis is exactly what happened to me when I attempted to create the original Steem Wikipedia page back late last year. No matter the sources I used they were “unreliable” and attempting to question the mods on why they felt this way resulted in a temporary ban on my account and a larger ban on posting in the crypto section in general. It wasn’t until early this year that the Steem community as a whole came together and created a new Steem page not dissimilar from the one I made. I hope this doesn’t happen to the Steem page as well, while I also hope the Steem community sticks to their guns about this and keeps the page from being deleted by parasitic mods and admins. titleThe curious case of the Skycoin Wikipedia page.
body![wiki1.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdMSVe5Hy1C7EbYTr1JxbLuHKLY6jgn5WxjSn57DEhxNG/wiki1.jpeg) It was a grand idea which came about at a time when the open source movement was gaining traction at an unprecedented rate. A massive online collaborative knowledge repository created and edited by the community. Free from censorship and corporate agenda, the information on Wikipedia was supposed be democratically inclusive and unbiased. There was a time when Wikipedia was heralded as a shining beacon of open collaboration harnessing the wisdom of the crowd but it seems that time has come and gone. Now referred to as Wikkedpedia by some, the online encyclopedia is increasingly criticised. Many feel that the complexity of the editorial policies acts as an entry bar for new editors which resulted in elitist old timer editing cliques with hidden agendas who use the platform to further those agendas and censor conflicting points of view, often for [personal gain](https://www-zdnet-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.zdnet.com/google-amp/article/wickedpedia-the-dark-side-of-wikipedia/) The saga of the Skycoin Wikipedia page. Which follows below, perhaps serves as one example which validates the claims made above. The Skycoin Wikipedia page was approved and published in October 2018 causing some excitement among Skycoin community members but simultaneously questions were raised around the content which sometimes appeared critical of Skycoin. A source at Skycoin revealed that the page had to be reformatted and edited multiple times before approval in order to pass the Wikipedia standards and not appear to be promotional material. Apparently this was a painstaking and laborious process which lasted several months and saw the page reworked several times before Wikipedia approved it. The creator of the page is an old salt with an established account and traceable 8 year editing history. No doubt he was used to jumping through Wikipedia hoops. Be that as it may, the hard work was worth it because in today's world you have not arrived until you have a Wikipedia page and Skycoin, one of the oldest and most mature crypto projects in the space, certainly deserved it's day. Shortly after publication though, various admins started removing the references from the page citing unreliability as the reason. It should be noted that these references included Reuters, Forbes, Nasdaq, CNBC, Bloomberg and the United Nations, all of which are generally considered to be reliable sources and must have passed muster with Wikipedia admins who had approved the page. Even an announcement by Binance via their official Medium account was unilatteraly declared to be an unreliable source and removed. Following the administrative pogrom of source references, the Skycoin Wikipedia page was marked for deletion and, as per Wikipedia policy, a deletion discussion page was put in place in order for interested parties to vote and discuss whether the deletion is valid and should in fact occur. The discussion can be [viewed here] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Skycoin ) and makes for some noteworthy reading while at the same time demonstrating the extent of the usurpation of collective commons information by Wikipedia admin and editorial cartels. ![wiki2.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZJWt3jMohUxJD53JgqqrJ7NJuTWzEMh7G2rCcNJivBZT/wiki2.jpeg) What can be surmised from the dialogue is that the Skycoin Wikipedia page creator, as per Wikipedia policy, was invited to participate in the deletion discussion. It seems that he had in the meantime arbitrarily received a topic ban from one of the admins and when he commented on the deletion page discussion, a permanent ban was slapped on him. It doesn't take a Sherlock Holmes to balance the equation here... Meanwhile, Wikipedia admins scratched the majority of comments from interested parties voting to keep the page stating that the keep votes were the work of "meat sock puppets". Yet another example of unilateral decision making as a result of bureaucratic centralisation within Wikipedia. Following this kangaroo court style parody, the Skycoin Wikipedia page was deleted. Had it been the case that Wikipedia enforced a blanket ban on all crypto, this story of bias and strongarm tactics would be comprehensible. However, several known scamcoins and shitcoins maintain a [Wikipedia presence](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cryptocurrencies),a fact that screams out for an explanation to be forthcoming.

titleiPhone users arrive in the future with the release of Skycoin's iOS wallet.
body![iphone1.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmT84s5Ja7Hry6wHEocJas7ZR4WAdTQ7PWXLf7tRxXfAyD/iphone1.png) Long suffering users of Apple's iPhone whom have hitherto been restricted to using Skycoin from their desktops only, can now let out a collective sigh of relief as the Skycoin iOS wallet is now available for download from the app Store. The wallet, secured by a user defined pin, boasts all the functionalities and features which are now considered standard for a high end mobile crypto wallet application. Users can create new wallets, load existing wallets from seed, check a wallet’s balance, and view a transaction log for all wallets hosted in the app. Oh and lest we forget the most important function of all, send and receive Skycoin. The interface is crisp, user friendly and intuitive with most functionalities available via a single tap. ![iphone2.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbNVn7PSYVBojAduGxVSrk8CpJvfPh6BehPSpmiKzM1tQ/iphone2.jpeg) The home screen features a handy tie in to the current Skycoin price feed which automatically tallies the Dollar worth of the total Skycoin from all wallets loaded on the app. Gone are the days of checking the price and manually calculating your Skyworth. Wallets and ballances are all displayed on the home screen and individual wallets can be expanded to view multiple addresses with their respective Skycoin and Coinhour balances. ![iphone 3.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmc98ScC3YsGKJdv6bBj2DNTztUpoA19SdRKdLDdsMq55s/iphone%203.jpeg) When sending Skycoin from a Skycoin iOS wallet app on which multiple wallets are kept, the user is able to select which wallet on the app to send coin from using a handy drop down box which displays the ballances of the individual wallets. A QR code reader is also built in to the send screen for quick and convenient acquisition of the send address. To receive Skycoin to the wallet, the user can either copy the wallet address with a single click and share it or display the QR code of the desired receive address to be scanned by the sender. The release of Skycoin's iOS mobile wallet completes the Skycoin wallet application stable as the Skycoin wallet is now available for all major desktop and mobile operating systems, making it broadly accessible.

A QR code reader is also built in to the send screen for quick and convenient acquisition of the send address.\n\nTo receive Skycoin to the wallet, the user can either copy the wallet address with a single click and share it or display the QR code of the desired receive address to be scanned by the sender. A complete transaction log can be convenientlly accessed directly from the app.\n![iphone4.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmc9B98VBLEKhxeD74P3Av7NNkTwH5Gf1eCkAppHJhcpJf/iphone4.jpeg)\n\nIn the fast moving world of crypto, access to the users wallet via mobile is imperative for a coin to remain competitive while it can be argued that large scale adoption is dependent on ease of access and use.
