| title | Book Review: Natural Born Heroes |
| body |
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/amazon.jpg
With his book, Born to Run, I was excited to read Christopher McDougall's new book, Natural Born Heroes. I thought the premise was be interesting and I already knew that that McDougall had a way of mixing history and athletic science in a way that made for a good read. So I dropped a couple of bucks and started reading. Natural Born Heroes was published in in 2015. It is about the true story of the Nazi occupation of Crete during World War II. Crete was going to be needed as a central control point of Europe while the Nazis stormed into Russia before the winter. Needless to say (Germany did lose the war), things did not go too well for the Germans. Though heavily outnumbered and outgunned, the Cretans were able able and willing to fight against the Germans, always keeping them off balance, no matter what cruelty they showed. To make matter worse for the invaders, a small band of British military misfits joined the Cretan resistance and successfully kidnapped a Nazi commander, adding to the chaos the Nazis needed to go through.
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/FrontierPartisans.jpg
The Cretan resistance were able to keep the war in Crete going for long enough that the Germans could not invade Russia until winter, leading to their demise. But how did they do it? They had very little in the way of weapons, were not trained or organized and did not have any true leader. That is what McDougall explored. He goes through the Cretan history, showing that the occupation of Germany was nothing new to the people of Crete. He explored the attitudes of the Crete people, their diet, their athletic prowess and the history. He even delves into some of the myths we have taken as fiction and shows that some might actually be true (such as the cyclops and the Minotaur).
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Google.jpg
But the focus of the book is the physical abilities of the Cretans. How were Cretans able to travel through the harsh environment during brutal weather on a starvation diet? And it was almost all the natives; old and young, man or women? McDougall looks at the different physical activities of the Cretan natives including Pankration and Parkour. He also talks about their diet and the benefits of many foods they have on Crete (many of which we can get in the United States). He also sneaks in some physical fitness theories and practice, citing experts.
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/HealthandFitnessHistory.jpg
There is a lot of great information in this book. The history of Crete is very interesting. McDougall brings together Greek mythology with history which I found fascinating. There was also a lot of good information about physical fitness practices such as Pankration and Parkour and go over diet options that we all have yet choose not to follow (this is what made Born to Run so popular). Oh, and I forgot, the actual war story is really interesting too. But that is what is the problem I had with the book.
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/LifeinCrete.jpg
There was just too much in such a few pages. Half the time, I lost track of the story (especially the names and locations) because of the history and information. Now, I know this book would have been 120 pages long if it was just the story itself (it turned out the story was not that interesting) but I would have liked if the actual war story would have been emphasized a little more. I did get a lot of information out of it, some, of which, I use in my training.
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/BestParkour.jpeg
The book was worth reading but I did not enjoy it as much as I expected. I found myself treating it more of a text book, hoping to pull a couple of nuggets I could use (and I did). I was hoping to enjoy it more. Worth the read but do not expect to be, "Wow'd" like Born to Run. I give Natural Born Heroes 3 out of 5 stars. | title | Dealing with Death: How Is This Suppose to Work? |
| body |
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/crosswalk.jpg
Since my son dies, I have been dealing from a lot of emotions. Not just from me but from those around me. Every person said that what they (and I) were going through were just a stage of grief. But when I asked for the stages, nobody seemed to know what any were. I had heard of them but could not name what all of them were or in what order. I decided to look it up. The stages of grief occur after a loved one dies. These should not be confused with the stages of grief one goes through when knowing they or a loved one know they are going to die (though they are very similar). Some sites say there are five and others say there are seven. Really, the only difference is that some are combined into one stage, so I decided to use the 7 stages. Also, everyone is different. Some will go through all stages and not know it while others will skip stages. And there is no timetable for each stage. It is just up to the person. Finally, like all psychological theories, there are detractors to the stages of grief. I found a lot of articles saying that there is no such thing and that mourning is a personal thing and cannot be categorized like this. This might be true, but I like the thought of what I am going through as "normal" and would rather think that way. It makes me believe there is light at the end of the tunnel. So, let's take a look at them. Shock and Denial
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/imtakingcharge.jpg
This first stage is the shock and disbelief one has at the death of a loved one. It is a numbness and a complete loss of the ability to grasp the situation. There are no emotions and thoughts are confused. It is almost like an emotional short circuit. I had this feeling for about three days though, it is said, it can go for weeks. The feeling is indescribable through words. I learned that shock is what the brain uses to protect the emotions from being overwhelmed. I buy that. Pain and Guilt
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/medium.jpeg
Once shock wears off pain and guilt set in. The pain should be quite obvious. Unbelievable suffering and loss with the inability to control one's emotions. That hole that people here about is finally felt. Crying is common and completely out of control and can happen at any time. Guilt might also accompany this because what one did or did not do to prevent the loss (even if nothing could have been done). This is a very dangerous time because the individual may not know how to express himself and the suffering can sometimes be too much. These feelings may be unbearable. Life can feel chaotic and not make sense. There is no silver lining. This part truly sucks. I think this is where I am now. Anger and Bargaining
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/nbcnews.jpg
This is when the pain turns to rage. Anger at why this happened. It is easy to blame other people, the victim or even God (or all). Bargaining is what one will do with a greater power (God) exchanging the lost loved one for you ("Please take me and bring him back"). This is where relationships can be broken so it is important to self-realize what one is losing control and is angry and try to control it. It is very important, in this stage, to deal with it without alcohol or drugs because it is easy to really lose control. "Depression", Reflection and Loneliness
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/theguardian.jpg
This stage is when the enormity of one's loss takes hold. One may just reflect and feel sad or even depressed over the loss (remember: there is a difference between sadness and depression. See a counselor if ever depressed). This stage is completely normal and should not be ignored. Do not listen to those who tell you to ignore those feeling or, and this one I love, "snap out of it" (I have heard family members say this). It is a completely normal and healthy way to grieve (again, unless depressed). A sense of emptiness and despair may be felt. And that's OK. Acknowledge and feel it. The Upward Turn
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/mpora.jpg
Things begin to turn for the better. Life becomes less chaotic and one is able to think more clearly. Stress is lessened and the sadness does not fill your day. Any physical pains that the stress may have caused begin to alleviate. One begins to live life without the one they love. Reconstruction and Working Through
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/potomacvalleycremationcenter.jpg
As one becomes more functional and logical, he will begin to try to put his life back together without the one he loves. This is a huge step especially when one loses a mate. I am not sure if this is as big when one loses a child, parent or sibling. Acceptance and Hope
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/linkmedia-org.png
In this stage, one learns to accept what has happened and move on. This does not mean happiness will be felt. A tragedy will change an individual for the rest of his life. He will never be the same. One will begin to look forward and make plans for the future. Eventually, one will be able to think of the lost person without feeling the terrible pain and sadness and will have pleasant thoughts about the person. And there will be joy. Conclusion
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/chicagonow.jpg
These stages are listed in order and separate of each other. But one must understand that emotions are not exact. Some stages may be skipped or they may bleed into each other. To be honest, I do not know where I am. It seems that I have experienced several stages at once including the last two. But, then, I find myself falling back into one of the previous stages. It is very confusing. Where I do find this information helpful is that I can understand that some of the stuff I am going through is normal. The anger, crying, sadness, hopelessness, confusion and rare bouts of happiness are part of the process. It has also helped when talking to my children. They sound so irrational sometimes and their feelings seem so illogical (I can't really say what they are feeling because it is private). But I now understand why they think the way they do. And I know it will get easier as time passes. Though I know that the last stages will come, I cannot see them. I cannot imagine getting back to normal. I and my children will just have to let time pass and see what happens. | title | Movie Review: The Babysitter |
| body |
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/bagogames.jpg
It's a Netflix night and we want something different that is overly violent, weird and a little funny. We decided to go for the Netflix produced movie, "The Babysitter". This is the kind of movie that shows me we have to have a video log when Josie and I watch a movie. She hated it. I loved it. OK. I will give her a bit of credit. This was not the, "Of Mice and Men" of our generation.
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/decider.jpg
The movie was released in 2017. It was written by Brian Duffield and directed by McG (yes, that is his name...no joke). It stars Judah Lewis and Samara Weaving. The movie received a 75% on rottentomatoes.com. You can look at the preview below. <img src="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qibY77AWlUc" The movie is about a boy named Cole, who is around thirteen, and is kind of a wussy. Since he is really smart he is, of course, bullied at school. His parents want to go out one night and decide to hire this hot babysitter, named Bee, to take care of him. This babysitter extremely hot. Long legs, tight butt, blond hair and a mouth that could suck a a golf ball through a garden hose. But she really is not the most responsible person in the world. Right when the parents leave, she sends the boy to bed and invites her friends over. It is so hard these days to find a good baby sitter. Oh, yeah. She and her friends were satanists and decided to hold a ritual sacrifice to call upon a demon. The boy saw this and, as you can suspect, the party were not all that thrilled with it. So they decide to kill him.
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/actress-camera.jpg
Of course, this wimpy, scrawny little boy, who could not defend himself against other thirteen years old boys, managed to single-handily kill these physically well-developed satanists one at a time. You could tell they were in really good shape because one never had his shirt on. He goes through the bad folk one by one until he has a final battle with the hot babysitter (I guess she was the leader, but who knows).
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/sanguetipob-blogspot.jpg
This movie is not going to change the social fabric of this country, I can tell you. But it was a load of fun. The violence was plentiful and cheesy to the point of funny. The dialog was absolutely terrible which added to the charm. It was just a really fun movie. Josie thought it was stupid but was laughing and did not want to turn it off. It kind of reminded my of "Dale and Tucker vs. Evil" (a must see as far as I am concerned).
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/dreadcentral.jpg
The movie was violent and, typical of getting a bunch of teenagers together, had some sexual situations. That being said, made sure little Billy is in bed before firing this one up. I think those who have that dark sense of humor (like me) will probably get a kick out of this one. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars. By the way, don't turn it off just because the credits are rolling. You will miss something. | title | It is Time to Try to Move On |
| body |
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/H07_D7_60.jpg
My son died last week. I still am not sure where I am or where I am going. But I know I need to deal with it. Since I love writing, I decided to deal with it this way. I will not write about how he died. I think there is too much fixation on that and I do not think it is important at this moment. I barely even think of that though I do make phone calls every day and look for new articles on the Internet. But I know I must accept that any answers out there will not satisfy me or bring him back. So, I will just deal with it. Accept it. And mourn.
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/as-a-baby.jpg
But I think the best way to deal with this is to keep writing so I can know where I am. Which means my readers will also know where I am. And I hope you folks respond and talk to me. It is helpful. Every Monday, I am going to bring this up. I know it will be rather long-winded at times. But I need this. And I hope that someone out there will read this and it may help or someone may have gone through this before and can help me. I never know. What Happened
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/35746_1293140739240_1900926_n.jpg
I heard from my sister-in-law last Tuesday night. The text came from my ex-wife, but I was having a great birthday and did not want to deal with it. So I ignored the call and texted her. My sister-in-law told me that Joey was missing and his friends were saying he had died. Of course I did not believe it but was worried. I called his cell phone a few times and he did not answer. I had talked to him the day before and he sounded fine. I sat and thought. And I broke down. I knew it could have happened (I won't get into that). I called my daughters. I was dizzy and numb. I fell on the floor again but barely remember it. I did not cry. I went on the Internet a found that there was an "unattended death" at the same college he attended. I called the police station. I called the police spokesman. I called everyone. Nothing.
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/216286_1644321835326_8102018_n.jpg
His body was identified the next day. No one from the family had seen him. He was identified by fingerprints. Josie, who spent the night with me, had to go to work. When the news arrived, I was numb. I did not cry. I did not fall to the ground. I just sat there. I really don't remember anything from that day. I had no emotion. I think I made some calls to settle my daughters and check on my father but I'm just not sure. Aftermath
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/526499_2861593706362_909028069_n.jpg
As one can imagine, there is a lot of suffering. I could not cry but I was very tense. My jaw was continually clinched. Josie and my parents kept in touch with me, my ex-wife and my children. My children are in such pain. When I saw them, it hit me. I started crying and I could not stop. It lasted for hours. But, when finally done, I felt better, more at peace. I know things are going to change, there are those stages one goes through when dealing with this. Maybe I'll blog about that later because I do not know what they are. I must admit that I did not want to cry in front of my girls because I felt I needed to be strong for them. I failed a few times. But I needed to and I would feel much better after I recovered (though sometimes it could take me an hour to recover). Now, I am angry and have very little focus. I am having issues working.
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/H38_02_14.jpg
But I know I will be alright. I just miss him sooo much. "body": "
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/H07_D7_60.jpg
\n\nMy son died last week.\n\nI still am not sure where I am or where I am going. Accept it. And mourn.\n\n
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/as-a-baby.jpg
\n\nBut I think the best way to deal with this is to keep writing so I can know where I am. I never know.\n\nWhat Happened\n\n
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/35746_1293140739240_1900926_n.jpg
\n\nI heard from my sister-in-law last Tuesday night. I went on the Internet a found that there was an \"unattended death\" at the same college he attended. I called the police station. I called the police spokesman. I called everyone. Nothing.\n\n
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/216286_1644321835326_8102018_n.jpg
\n\nHis body was identified the next day. No one from the family had seen him. He was identified by fingerprints. Josie, who spent the night with me, had to go to work. When the news arrived, I was numb. I did not cry. I did not fall to the ground. I just sat there. I really don't remember anything from that day. I had no emotion. I think I made some calls to settle my daughters and check on my father but I'm just not sure.\n\nAftermath\n\n
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/526499_2861593706362_909028069_n.jpg
\n\nAs one can imagine, there is a lot of suffering. Maybe I'll blog about that later because I do not know what they are.\n\nI must admit that I did not want to cry in front of my girls because I felt I needed to be strong for them. I failed a few times. But I needed to and I would feel much better after I recovered (though sometimes it could take me an hour to recover). Now, I am angry and have very little focus. I am having issues working.\n\n
http://reallysorefeet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/H38_02_14.jpg
\n\nBut I know I will be alright. I just miss him sooo much.\n\nFollow me on Twitter @RunninFewl",
