      "title": "A Very Brief History of Energy",
      "body": "It was way before my time but, if you believe history as it is written, the energy story started with fire. Fire was quite useful for providing light and heat and for \tcooking meat, but fire was not portable and not very easy to create in the early days. As time \tpushed on Humankind got pretty good at starting fires, and most certainly had a really good idea what would burn and what would not. As great as fire was, it really didn't do any work. We primarily used wind and water to help us do work. But wind and water had some problems: wind was intermittent, and water was fixed in a specific geographic location, so doing work with water required being close to a source of moving water. Fast forward to the 1600's, or thereabout, and we start seeing fire being used to turn water into steam, and the steam could be \t\tused to do work; steam engines. Steam engines had a good run an prevailed through the late 1700s to early 1800s at which time internal combustion engines (contained and precisely controlled fires, a huge leap in fire technology) hit the scene. At this point in time there were fires everywhere, literally. We quickly realized that burning things en-mass made the air around us a little less pleasant to breathe. \nInterestingly, the early 1800s had brought another new technology; electricity. The early experiments with electricity were primarily experiments with batteries. Somewhere around the 1820s the dynamo (electric motor/generator) is invented. This invention allowed us to create electricity by spinning magnets. We employed our good friend moving \twater to help us spin the generators (Hydro Electric). But water had the same shortcomings that it had earlier in our story; it is in a fixed location. So, we had to turn to our tried and true, time tested method for doing work; burning things. By burning a fuel (wood, coal, oil, natural gas), and boiling water, to create steam, we could turn the generators with the steam and create endless supplies of electricity, anywhere we wanted. Fast forward to today, Tuesday, December 19, 2017, and we are still burning fossil fuels to create a large percentage of our electricity. Our transportation industry still relies heavily on combustion engines. Our houses rely heavily on oil and natural gas for heat and our energy needs are growing at a very fast pace. I have left out quite a bit of detail regarding how we got to where we are today, but I have \tincluded enough detail to pose my first question for thought: why are we still burning things? Do we lack the willpower to change? Do we lack the technology to change?  Is change too expensive? Are politics preventing change? Are we waiting for the point in time where change is the only option?
