bodyI've been long term bag-holding crypto since mid-December 2017. Fortunately, I got into most of my cryptos after the first pullbacks in mid-december, meaning I didn't get in at ATHs, but I'm still overall 50% down on my portfolio. It's okay, the experiment is to hold for 1-3 years, although if we get another bullrun this december, it will be hard to not take profits. That TRX buy at 3.5 cents looked genius when it was pushing 30+ cents, lol. Now, my previous experience with daytrading pennies I took my account from $500 to $3500 in 3 months. Yeah, I added some here and there and also "reimbursed" my fees as a kind of tuition to learning how to trade, but overall I was in the green and doing okay. I feel I lucked into a couple of really advantageous trades (200-300x spikers I held onto and got out near the tops), but also had a couple of really well planned trades I'm particularly proud of. Anyway, I've started watching the market again and reading and watching trading material. I'm getting up earlier (but still not early enough) to try to watch some of the morning action. That INUV runner this morning certainly got my attention, but with no catalyst that I could find (I've really got to get back in the habit of researching), I'm very wary of it. In particular, that morning drop from after-hours spike, that sideways consolidation, and then a nice pop from the .80s to, now 1.20s, there's a good 20%-30% gains to have been had there with the right risk. But no catalyst... definitely a speculative trade for me. Earnings in a couple days.. buy rumor sell the news?

bodyI read about these little pencil cases that make nice little travel cases for volcas. I picked one up to test it out. Pink, obviously, to show how much of a manly man I am: ![pink.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPzstKMMQtGPcJbBCrYZo9vYtsNmaF7TQGpwqCawDKRVn/pink.jpeg) Unfortunately, I really don't want to disassemble my 6 volca stand and frankly, the cases make the volcas even more bulky for my minimal load out (basically, take to my gf's and noodle around there). Then I remembered.. I have pocket operators that I haven't touched in months! Behold, my pencil case electro kit: ![electro.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWA3LzWrfmtMbXNZnfVSk4TwMbyuQTYKY2D4nkmyjfDkJ/electro.jpeg) Woohoo!

I've got a couple of weeks off to recover from my accident, asked my girlfriend to take a couple of guitars I haven't played in 5 or 6 years+ and traded in for this little girl. Semi-modular, I'm sure the purist eurorack folks will balk, but it seems to be a decent way to get my toes wet. I fully intend to pick up a Moog DFAM, as well, but that'll be a month or two away once I'm back to earning a real paycheck.

body<insert story about almost getting killed in an accident. Frequent breaks required to type now as the road rash and joint pain prohibit me from typing for stretches longer than 30 or 40 seconds. Check your mirrors when changing lanes, folks, the life you save may be a friend's.> My first mac was around 2006 when the iMac Core2Duo machines came out. I owned it briefly for about 6 months and sold it for near what I paid for it. A few years later, my job had a dual G5 Powermac sitting on the ewaste pile; no POST or boot. I asked our IT guy if I could take it home and he said sure. Turned out, someone had just popped the CMOS battery out (common reason for it not to POST). Pushed it back in, POSTED fine. Added an HDD (SSDs were too expensive still, IIRC), upped the RAM to 16gb, bought a boxed copy of OS X and that became a fine little desktop until a few years ago when I bought my current gaming laptop (Aorus X3). I suppose Blizzard did me a favor when they stopped supporting G5s and at the time, World of Warcraft was my main escape. Curious: after I shut down the G5 and sold it, my power bill dropped about $40/month on average and it was much easier to cool my apartment in the summer. I like *NIX environments. I just think they mostly suck for anything that's remotely creative in endeavors. Yeah, I know the exceptions, but frankly, I like my Reason. I like Native Instruments. I like Adobe Premiere, After Effects, etc. I know things are getting better for Linux, but I did the waiting game back in the 90s. I think what I really like is the idea of *NIX, but in usage, I really just want applications that do the things I want them to do and when I want them to do it. So, in reality, maybe it's not *NIX I like: I'm just a user, I want to use my computer, not administrate it. For example: one of my best friends is a hardcore admin/tinkerer type. He plays World of Warcraft, via WINE, on his Linux box. He's been a 100% Linux user since the alpha days (and I've been playing with Linux since Redhat 3.x off and on). However, when a patch breaks his install, he'll spend hours/days hacking away to figure out how/why it broke and fixing it. To him, I suppose that's part of the fun. For me, it'd frustrate me to no end and I'd just reinstall windows and be back playing by the end of the day. It's not that I don't mind troubleshooting things, it's just that I don't want to troubleshoot those particular issues. And that's what I think OS X is good at: it abstracts those particular issues away from the average user. Sure, there may be the occasional issue, but nothing like what happens with what sudo apt-get dist-upgrade has done with my various mint installs. But I digress. I've always been wary of the Mac lifestyle. I find the equipment to always be a little bit.. underwhelming or not quite what I want. I've been considering a new Macbook Pro. Why haven't I done so? * Everything's soldered in, for one. I like to buy things in the mid-range, and after a few years, upgrade the components. * The touchbar.. wtf is that? Looks like expensive frippery to me. Lenovo got the hint with the X1s, and for those of us who still use the command line for stuff. * Never quite exactly what I want. Great idea: macbook Core M (or whatever they've renamed them to) makes for a decent little netbook style portable. But they went overboard on the "design" part of it: Give me a thinkpad X200s with the same guts as the Macbook. Fill the rest with a fucking battery and a thinkpad-esque keyboard for 2 days of computing time. Not some flat-ass keyboard that actually *hurts* me to type on (disclaimer: I like Cherry MX Browns. I need tactile response. When I have to use my work HP laptop, I have to refrain from throwing it out the window every time it misses my spacebar tap). Those aren't insurmountable. There's still plenty of 2012 macbook pros floating around, and those fit almost exactly what I want with the exception of the discrete graphics being woefully out of date. But with the advent of eGPUs and what not, maybe this isn't so bad for the latest generations of Macbook Pros (but seriously, fuck a touchbar) and my eventual desire to work with VR stuff. There's also this fear of getting sucked into the cult. Buy a mac.... get frustrated with Android integration. Buy an iPhone. Next thing you know, I'm riding a Bird in skinny jeans and saying "bro" a lot and tuning into TED talks, Apple WWDC presentations, switching from C# to Swift and FUCK................. I digress. So.. I bought a used (barely) Mac Pro. The Trashcan model. It was a fantastic price, came with an iLok for Protools. I haven't hooked it up yet because it will require a major desktop realignment (shelves moved, monitor arm installed, etc) and I'm not quite up to doing that with my injuries. I know I know, "What about upgrades? What about... ?" and I agree fully. I can still work with the RAM and SSD portions, but will have to work out if I can actually swap the CPU and Graphics Planes if they come down in price (I see some D700 pairs on ebay for a bit over a grand.. not sure I want to spend that much... But I would eventually like to throw in a 12 core Xeon.. I mean, why the fuck not? MOAR POWER! I bet it will scroll text really fast). This is really an indictment on the direction of Windows for me. I don't want Cortana. Hell, I don't want OK Google. And both Android and Windows are fucking pissing me off with their data vacuuming policies. It is my understanding that Apple is more interested in selling products, not making me one, and if Apple goes down this road, fuck it. Back to feature phones and *BSD or something. Goddammit. Anyway, I got a Mac. It sits there, in the box, taunting me. I've got plans for it, beyond my usual upgrades + a second monitor since I lose one with the laptop going away: * Recording base - It comes with a fully licensed Pro Tools install. This will come in handy once I start recording my synthpunk volca jams. And VCV Rack. And eventually.. Eurorack. * Video editing base - I think I'm going to bite the bullet and just buy Final Cut Pro X. I'm tired of subscription pricing for Adobe. * General development environment - it seems all of silicon valley is on OS X or Linux. Time to return to the fold, even though I'm not in SV. :D * I can be the Mac Pro weirdo for awhile. * You know.. maybe I do want to learn SWIFT (Swift? swift? is it case sensitive? bah) So, here goes nothing. Maybe I'll let my laptop mine monero or something in the meantime.

I'm tired of subscription pricing for Adobe.\n* General development environment - it seems all of silicon valley is on OS X or Linux. Time to return to the fold, even though I'm not in SV. :D\n* I can be the Mac Pro weirdo for awhile.\n* You know.. maybe I do want to learn SWIFT (Swift? swift? is it case sensitive? bah)\n\nSo, here goes nothing. Maybe I'll let my laptop mine monero or something in the meantime.",

bodyHow mighty the battle is. I've fallen in love with futzing with little analog synthesizers in the Volca line. I'm determined to put out a synth/post-punk release this year, and there's a lot to digest when it comes to workflow and actual usage of these little noise boxes. I've managed to pick up all but the Mix (and don't really need that as I have an 8 channel mixer on my desktop), and it's a little overwhelming coming from basically the plug-and-play punk rock guitar world. I recently watched Trent Reznor's extended interview for a documentary, "I Dream of Wires": https://youtu.be/JNNFLHV6j1I And.. just look at that background! Knobs! Switches! BLINKENLIGHTS! Of course, that sent me into a youtube hole: what are these things? what can you do with them? How much do they---oh crap, maybe nevermind. Definitely a far cry from my little ~$100USD (used) volcas. But boy howdy, now I have some goals. (Crypto related: Fuck a lambo. Eurorack, baby.) I can definitely see where I want to progress. Can't wait.

body![the_nerd.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdS3Lbv24bEMWtNaRgBZsTBo1n4h6RqYrKLJtFA5SVp5B/the_nerd.jpg) ###### Volcas, fountain pens, and dirty mechanical keyboards. I spent the greater part of a decade playing guitar in a punk rock band based out of Memphis, TN. We still play, occasionally, when I'm back in town, but I think it's rather played out at the moment. Maybe in 10-15 years once our audience has raised up their babies and are looking to come back out and get fucked up. Until then... I've always loved #postpunk, #coldwave, #deathrock, and #industrial music (of the Skinny Puppy, FLA variety.. I can dig some modern EBM, and some Powernoise (XOTOX)). I finally decided it was time to pick up some cheapo gear and try making my own music without worrying about finding bandmates and practice spaces. DIY to the extreme? I discovered these little #volcas awhile back; they're cheap, analog, and very basic, which sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. I can appreciate really well-crafted music, but sometimes I just like stripping things down to the basics. These little boxes are limited and hopefully, will fit the bill nicely in what I want to make, which is basically 4 on the floor punk rock, but with analog synths. There's really 2 too many boxes here: I doubt I'll be using the Sample or the Kick much, but wtf, these things are cheap as chips on craigslist, so it doesn't hurt? Maybe I'll use the sample to load up and play old sci-fi/horror samples, industrial style. Or overlay processed vocals (I also have a teenage engineering Speak, haven't even opened the box it came in, though). The only thing I really want right now is an Arturia Keystep controller for the longer sequences and arpeggiator, and maybe Ableton Lite for tracked recording (I believe it comes with the keystep for free...). The manuals the come with the Volcas are shite. Fortunately, there's a ton of youtube videos that show how to use them, and I also found a bunch of courses on askvideo.com for them. There's also a set of ebooks on google books that goes into each button/setting/knob in-depth. So there's plenty of learning options. I've also got a few guitar pedals (delay, chorus, distortion) that I'll probably pull into the mix, as well. Welp, I've got the gear, nothing to do but to do the damn thing.

body# My start in distributed computering and crypto-currenciering When I first heard about bitcoin, I thought (and still do) it was gross. Disgusting, even. You see, I was intimately familiar with distributed.net, seti@home, and folding@home at the time. I had a small dual Celeron rig I built in the late 90s specifically to run BeOS and, due to my insane work schedule, basically just let it contribute to my team's d.net score. I thought this was going to be big: distributed computing to build on-the-fly supercomputers networked across the world. Then came seti@home and folding@home, both of which aimed to solve a couple of real problems: search for ExtraTerrestrial signals in the background noise of the universe (maybe I'll make a post about my Church of the All Signal eventually.. ;) ), and another for simulating protein folds for medicinal research. At first, I was all about folding@home, but then we came to find that the originators were charging people money for access to their distributed network. No, just no. I'm donating my electricity and my computing resources for a good cause; I'll be damned if you're going to make money on my goodwill. This comes into play today with my experiment here on steemit. We'll come back to that. Distributed.net, btw, if you weren't around then, was an attempt to prove how strong various encryption techniques were by brute forcing the keys using a worldwide network of computers. We got to see, first hand, just what kind of effort it would take to break those algorithms by force. It was fun and it was for science! ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeQwMmS3W6YPukk9tQX3RwP76Vk5bkmUP3ttGFo43yMms/image.png) ###### *distributed.net cow image taken from www.distributed.net/logos official logos. Created by Jeff Lawson* And then came bitcoin. I distinctly recall most of us thinking about what a waste of resources, what a waste of time it would be to do a distributed currency. What problem were we solving? Outside of the radical anarchist nonsense about central banking, I couldn't think of any. I mean, if I stopped contributing to folding@home because of unpaid commercialization, I just couldn't get myself to get onboard bitcoin, which is basically the purest form of commercialization with the singular incentive of making magic internet money. I, rightfully, analyzed that bitcoin, if it were to take off, would eventually require [an immense amount of resources](https://digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy-consumption). The days of mining on your desktop or on a forgotten garage computer would be limited, as we've seen over the past few years. It just seemed... wrongheaded. I saw potential in cryptocurrency in the future (after all, if we ever travel to other planets/build space stations, etc, are we really going to lug around gold and silver, or even paper if we don't have to? mass = $$$), but I wasn't convinced $BTC was the future. Plus, I wasn't exactly enamored with the politics involved. Charles Stross wrote a nice [article](http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2013/12/why-i-want-bitcoin-to-die-in-a.html) that, while I won't say I agree with his... let's call it vigor, I think it sums up a lot of my feelings towards crypto-as-politics. And we won't even get into TPS. Maybe Lightning will fix it. Maybe this year will be the year of Linux-on-the-desktop. Just because I poo-poo'd $BTC doesn't mean I ignored it. I was very much aware of the big use case: buying drugs on the internet. How many accidental millionaires do I know because they bought $BTC to buy drugs on the Silk Road and forgot about it? Of course, how many of those also forget their public key or had it confiscated when DPR got busted? I think almost anyone peripherally involved with tech knows at least one of these poor folks. I'm also not naive to think if I had collected some $BTC back in the day of early mining I'd be sitting on top of a skyscraper in my villain's lair; shit, I'd have gotten out if it hit $1. Most of us would have and many of us did. But the point is, I kept an eye on it. I still found it disgusting, and also started looking at ethereum. And last year, I finally realized the following things about myself: * I was wrong about the iPod and Apple. I thought the iPod was lame and Apple products in general were too expensive and would remain a niche market. I was a fan of NeXT, but who could afford one of those? I had read Neal Stephenson's [In the Beginning...was the Command Line](https://www.amazon.com/Beginning-was-Command-Line/dp/0380815931) (referral link removed for your pleasure), which I recommend as some decent reading into the state of computing in the late 90's. I was a BeOS guy, and still find myself dinking around with [HaikuOS](https://www.haiku-os.org/) from time to time. I have an old Sony Netbook I am tempted to install it on. Anyway, Neal really did a decent job of articulating what it was to those of us who had discovered BeOS. Apples were walled gardens. Linux was anarchy. BeOS was somewhere in the middle, with a user experience that had to be used to be enjoyed. Anyway, just take a look at Apple's stock price and imagine my acceptance of the fact that even though I still own no Apple products, I was wrong. So, so wrong from a prediction standpoint. (I did have a Powermac G5 that I pulled from a garbage heap for awhile there. It was nice, especially for the price of a CMOS battery and a harddrive, and it doubled as a space heater in the winter). * I was wrong about the housing market. I didn't buy in the mid-2000s because I thought it was a bubble and was proven right. Unfortunately, the market had the effect of destroying my job, so I could no longer buy a house as I didn't have a stable income. But hey, the market won't return to the ridiculous prices it reached pre-crash, right? *sigh* * BeOS never went anywhere. * Mother-fucking bitcoin hit $20k. Here's a little story: Last year, I had dinner with a buddy who mentioned he was getting into penny stocks. I laughed. And he asked me to take a look at a certain penny stock "guru" (whomever came up with that term to use for these guys needs to be kicked in the dick). So I did. And jesus christ, that guy sounded like a big fucking douche, but he sounded like a rational douche. I bought one of his courses, and decided I wanted to give it a whirl. Now, I skipped over the part where I had bought a little Ethereum earlier last year when it had a big dip to < $200 just to experiment with (and I vastly prefer Ether over BTC for various reasons; I'm sure you can think of them yourself). I was sitting on a nice return and sold it to fund my first trading account. Now, it wasn't huge, about $500. Get my toes wet. And by mid-December, I was sitting on $3500. I mean, jesus, that's not bad at all. There's something to it, I guess. The problems: 1. Waking up every morning at 6AM to get ready for market open sucked. I'm a night owl. Given no responsibility, I naturally go to bed around 5-6AM and wake up around 1-2PM. 1. Gambling addiction issues. My family has addiction issues. Gambling is one thing that runs in the family. I used to have a __problem__ with gambling; I worked 2 jobs for awhile there and one whole paycheck went to feeding the casino. I did that for about 6 months before I came to my senses. But as I watched the candlesticks, price action, order sheets, I began to feel that same feeling I got at the craps table. Clammy hands. Cold sweat. Adrenaline pumping and dumping. I realized this was going to be problematic as my blood pressure began to climb and climb. No wonder stock traders look like they're 50 when they're in their late 20s. You know, even if I could make a million a year doing this.. I'm not sure I wanted the lifestyle. So, my last penny stock trade, I setup over 3 weeks. Instead of the quick day-trade I had been doing, I made a calculated bet. $BTC would continue to climb, so I found a couple of stocks that had previously seen a lot of action and followed $BTC's price for a bit there. I researched and determined, as always, it was a scammy scammy scammy stock (as all pennystocks are.. If anyone tells you otherwise, they've swallowed the cum-filled-kool-aid. Exceptions prove the rule), but the pattern didn't lie. The two $BTC funds were going to hit the market soon, and my wager was that as $BTC continued to climb, people were going to call their brokers and say "I want to buy bitcoin!" Because $BTC isn't tradable on the exchanges (yet? maybe now?), their brokers were going to buy anything with the word "bitcoin," "blockchain-," or similar in the name. I put my money where my thoughts were and et voila! I doubled my money in 3 weeks. That long term hold was the least stressful I felt in the past 3 months of day trading and I made just as much money. But then I thought, why bet on something that's dependent upon the price of bitcoin when I can just buy it direct? Well, let's not get too hasty because I still think $BTC is gross; but there are alternatives. I began pulling my money out of the market. I began reading about alt-coins. Awesome! Just like penny stocks, there's hype, there's news-price-action, there's pump and dump, all the things you love about pennies with ZERO REGULATION. But more importantly: * Cryptocurrencies are a scam and will never take off See my predictions above that failed? Apparently, the stronger the conviction, the less likely it was to be a truthful indicator of the future. I felt (feel?) strongly about crypto's use. I felt (feel?) strongly that crypto's price is not generated by genuine usage cases, but by speculation. I felt (feel?) that after analyzing crypto, it's still ripe for massive scams (ICO exit scams.. bitconnect...). But goddammit, I was wrong about all these other big things, why not put my money to the test? I bought in. I created accounts on several exchanges. Nevermind that I have no idea who those exchanges are and knowing my luck, keep all of our identification stuff in fucking Google Docs or an unsecured AWS... Instead of day trading, I decided I'm buying and I'm holding long term. And I've continued to add to my holdings because I firmly believe it's going nowhere. Not a lot, mind you, but I'm buying and continuing to buy. For a minimum of 1 year, that's the agreement I made with myself. Here's the thing, though. The speculation part is nice. Yeah, I'd love to buy a lambo one day (actually, more like a Ford Transit or Nissan NV200.. I'm a utilitarian kind of dude. Okay, so I'll get a naked Aztec Princess holding a serpent airbrushed on the side and blast doom metal or something). But I figured, if I'm going to do this, let's avoid the moon rush and look for use cases. Let's look for real world problems. Let's go beyond the "I hope I hope I hope" and get into "What can I use this for?" And that's what I think I've done a decent job at. So far, my portfolio looks like my girlfriend's tampon, but I think that goes for anyone getting into the market in late 2018. But I hold. # Steemit I gave up facebook. #fuckzuck Remember what I said about folding@home? It's sobering to know that I was creating content that people were reading and reacting to, and the only thing I had to show for it was some magic internet points. Reputation. Oh yay, 200 likes! Sure, I don't mind sharing, but you know what? Facebook is making money off of people like me. People like you. We create the content, but all we get are a few "attaboys"! and continue on with our day. One of the first coins I bought was REQ. I thought it was trying to solve an interesting problem, that of micro-transactions. Of course, I think micro-transactions, in current state (and the state we've been battling since the 90s) is that no one wants to pay for anything. I don't want to pay for anything if I don't have to. The big saving grace of Amazon Prime, besides the shipping, is that it saves me from bittorrent. And if you haven't watched Babylon 5, what the hell? Get on it. Back to REQ. I ended up selling it with a 30% profit because I just wasn't feeling confident in it. I put it into another of my alts, but continued thinking about this issue. A few months ago, I ran into steemit. I think I had googled something and there was a steemit post about it. I began looking through various sources and realized that $STEEM was poised to solve those problems about monetizing and incentivizing creators. I still see some issues with some of the assumptions, but you know what? Here it is. A coin with a real use-case, right now. I can buy some STEEM, create an account, and start posting. If people like my shit, I can make a little scratch. If not, it's no worse than facebook, where I get exactly dick for my efforts. And fuck wordpress. Sure, steemit may be filled with a bunch of bearded nerds (I don't know, is it?). I'm a bearded nerd. Why not give it a shot? I guess my round-up of all of that is: Sure, lambo/moon is great! But what I really want to see is REAL WORLD USAGE. REAL WORLD ADOPTION. And $STEEM seems to be delivering that right now. I bought some STEEM today. I created my account. Now hopefully, maybe I can see the future. Hello, World!

\n\n* I was wrong about the housing market. *sigh*\n* BeOS never went anywhere.\n* Mother-fucking bitcoin hit $20k. \n\nHere's a little story: \nLast year, I had dinner with a buddy who mentioned he was getting into penny stocks. I laughed. And he asked me to take a look at a certain penny stock \"guru\" (whomever came up with that term to use for these guys needs to be kicked in the dick). The problems:\n1. Waking up every morning at 6AM to get ready for market open sucked. I'm a night owl. Given no responsibility, I naturally go to bed around 5-6AM and wake up around 1-2PM. \n1. I'm not sure I wanted the lifestyle.\n\nSo, my last penny stock trade, I setup over 3 weeks. The two $BTC funds were going to hit the market soon, and my wager was that as $BTC continued to climb, people were going to call their brokers and say \"I want to buy bitcoin!\" Because $BTC isn't tradable on the exchanges (yet? maybe now?), their brokers were going to buy anything with the word \"bitcoin,\" \"blockchain-,\" or similar in the name. Well, let's not get too hasty because I still think $BTC is gross; but there are alternatives.\n\nI began pulling my money out of the market. I began reading about alt-coins. Awesome! Just like penny stocks, there's hype, there's news-price-action, there's pump and dump, all the things you love about pennies with ZERO REGULATION. But more importantly:\n* Cryptocurrencies are a scam and will never take off\n\nSee my predictions above that failed? Apparently, the stronger the conviction, the less likely it was to be a truthful indicator of the future. I felt (feel?) strongly about crypto's use. I felt (feel?) strongly that crypto's price is not generated by genuine usage cases, but by speculation. I felt (feel?) that after analyzing crypto, it's still ripe for massive scams (ICO exit scams.. bitconnect...). But goddammit, I was wrong about all these other big things, why not put my money to the test?\n\nI bought in. \n\nHere's the thing, though. Let's go beyond the \"I hope I hope I hope\" and get into \"What can I use this for?\" And that's what I think I've done a decent job at. So far, my portfolio looks like my girlfriend's tampon, but I think that goes for anyone getting into the market in late 2018. But I hold.\n\n# Steemit\n\nI gave up facebook. We create the content, but all we get are a few \"attaboys\"! and continue on with our day.\n\nOne of the first coins I bought was REQ. Why not give it a shot?\n\nI guess my round-up of all of that is: Sure, lambo/moon is great! But what I really want to see is REAL WORLD USAGE. REAL WORLD ADOPTION. And $STEEM seems to be delivering that right now. \n\nI bought some STEEM today. I created my account. Now hopefully, maybe I can see the future.\n\nHello, World!",
