titleLiving without money: what I learned
body

With little idea of what I was to expect, or how I was to go about it, seven years ago I began living without money. Originally intended as a one-year experiment in ecological living, I wanted to explore how it felt as a human being to live without the trappings and security that money had long-since afforded me. While terrifying and tough to begin with, by the end of the first year I somehow found myself more content, healthier and at peace than I had ever been. And although three years later I made a difficult decision to re-enter the monetary world – to establish projects that would enable others to loosen the grip that money has on their lives – I took from it many lessons that have changed my life forever.

For the first time I experienced how connected and interdependent I was on the people and natural world around me, something I had previously only intellectualized. It is not until you become physically aware of how your own health is entirely reliant on the health of the great web of life, that ideas such as deep ecology absorb themselves into your arteries, sinews and bones. If the air that filled my lungs became polluted, if the nutrients in the soil that produced my food became depleted, or if the spring water which made up 60% of my body became poisoned, my own health would suffer accordingly. This seems like common sense, but you wouldn’t think so by observing the way we treat the natural world today. Over time, even the boundaries of what I considered to be “I” became less and less clear. What I took from this was that if we want to secure the long-term health of ourselves and future generations of life, we need to start defending these ecological systems with the same fierceness and determination as we would an attack on our own body, an idea I explore in my new book, Drinking Molotov Cocktails with Gandhi.

While we may be able to detach ourselves from the spiraling instances of ecocide that we are now used to hearing about on a regular basis – after all, it tends to be distant and sometimes abstract things that are under threat, and nothing so concrete as our own bodily sovereignty – these attacks are, in the long run, no less serious. More than anything else, I discovered that my security no longer lay in my bank account, but in the strength of my relationships with the people, plants and animals around me. My character replaced sterling as my currency. If I acted selfishly or without care for those around me, then in the medium-term my ability to meet my own economic needs would diminish. My moneyless economy was one in which helpfulness, generosity and solidarity were rewarded. Contrast that to the worlds of high finance and big business, in which a healthy dose of psychopathy will often help in making it to the top, and selfishness and ruthlessness are the qualities du jour. When we have plenty of money, we can spend our days exploiting the world around us for our own profit, and the checkout guy will still sell us our weekly groceries, the airline still fly us to the Costa del Sol. Without money, act badly enough for long enough and life would become almost impossible. On a personal level, I realized I was capable of more than I ever imagined. I say this not out of pride, but on the basis that if I – a man who had been much more comfortable with a spreadsheet than a spade – could live from my locality, then almost anybody could. I quickly learned how to farm and to forage, and how to make things from what I found naturally around me. In essence, I discovered how to take care of myself and others in ways that didn’t inflict systemic violence on people and creatures whom I had no idea I was having such a brutal impact on through my shopping habits.

My greatest lesson, however, was that in all of the time I was out there doing my little thing, species after majestic species were being made extinct faster than ever; forests, oceans and rivers were being depleted at untenable rates; and social injustice was rising exponentially, putting more and more money into the hands of those least likely to use it for the common good. This I could no longer ignore. While trying to “be the change you want to see in the world” is something we might all be wise to try, we cannot sit back and watch industrial civilisation drive the great web of life – ourselves included – over the cliff edge. Democracy is meant to hold power to account, but in a world of spin doctors, time poverty and politico-economic illiteracy, democracies are failing to do so. When this happens, activism has to step in. Yet our activism today has become as tame and timid as our neatly-trimmed gardens. The worlds of political, social and ecological campaigning can no longer continue with activism-as-usual. It is simply not working. None of this is a criticism of the determined people who participate in these movements for change, and I am not suggesting that there are no success stories. But if you step back and honestly look at the state of our ecological and social landscapes, all the indicators of health are on a steep decline.
To have some chance of returning these landscapes to vitality, our political landscape needs rewinding. It is a terrifying, yet exciting, time to be alive. We can turn the biggest crises of our age into something that gives our lives a renewed sense of meaning and purpose. But to do so, I believe we have to upgrade the three r’s of the climate change generation from “reduce, reuse, and recycle” to something more befitting of the crises unfolding before us: “resist, revolt, rewind”. Now is the time to be bold.

We need to stop the onslaught of the machine into the natural world using every means that is effective, or before we know it we will have witnessed the devastation and loss of all the beauty that still remains. If we allow that to happen, we shall deserve our fate. Instead, if we fight back then we may earn ourselves a future that, at this dark hour before the dawn, we cannot even imagine yet.

Source:theguardian

titleOver 500 die in Congo cholera outbreak – WHO
body

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday said more than 500 people have so far died in cholera epidemic sweeping the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The world body said in a statement that outbreaks of the water-borne disease occur regularly in Congo, mainly due to poor sanitation and the lack of access to clean drinking water.

It stated that this year’s epidemic, which hit at least 10 urban areas including Kinshasa, was particularly disturbing as about 1.4 million people were displaced by violence in the central Kasai region.
The WHO said at least 528 people had died and the epidemic had spread to 20 of Congo’s 26 provinces.
It noted that “the risk of spread remains very high toward the Grand Kasai region, where degraded sanitary and security conditions further increase vulnerability in the face of the epidemic.

“So far, health officials have recorded more than 24,000 suspected cases of the disease across the vast nation this year, averaging more than 1,500 new cases per week since the end of July.”
It added that WHO sent a team of experts, including epidemiologists and public health specialists to Congo this month to contain the spread of the disease.
Source:Promonaija

titleThe Top 10 Things Everyone Needs To Know In Life
body

What are the top 10 things we need to know in life? “Life is short, you need to…blah blah blah….” I knew this already, anything I haven’t been informed yet?

 1. Realize that nobody cares, and if they do, you shouldn’t care that they care. Got a new car? Nobody cares. You’ll get some gawkers for a couple of weeks—they don’t care. They’re curious. Three weeks in it’ll be just another shiny blob among all the thousands of others crawling down the freeway and sitting in garages and driveways up and down your street. People will care about your car just as much as you care about all of those. Got a new gewgaw? New wardrobe? Went to a swanky restaurant? Exotic vacation? Nobody cares. Don’t base your happiness on people’s caring, because they won’t. And if they do, they either want your stuff or hate you for it.

2. Some rule-breakers will break rule number one. Occasionally, people in your life will defy the odds and actually care about you. Still not your stuff, sorry. But if they value you, they’ll value that you value it, and they’ll listen. When you talk about all of those things that nobody else cares about, they will look into your eyes and consume your words, and in that moment you will know that every part of them is there with you.

3. Spend your life with rule-breakers. Marry them. Befriend them. Work with them. Spend weekends with them. No matter how much power you become possessed of, you’ll never be able to make someone care—so gather close the caring.

4. Money is cheap. I mean, there’s a lot of it—trillions upon trillions of dollars floating around the world, largely made up of cash whose value is made up and ascribed to it, anyway. Don’t engineer your life around getting a slightly less tiny portion of this pile, and make your spirit of generosity reflect this principle. I knew a man who became driven by the desire to amass six figures in savings, so he worked and scrimped and sacrificed to get there. And he did… right before he died of cancer. I’m sure his wife’s new husband appreciated his diligence.

5. Money is expensive. I mean, it’s difficult to get your hands on sometimes—and you never know when someone’s going to pull the floorboards out from under you—so don’t be stupid with it. Avoid debt on depreciating assets, and never incur debt in order to assuage your vanity (see rule number one). Debt has become normative, but don’t blithely accept it as a rite of passage into adulthood—debt represents imbalance and, in some sense, often a resignation of control. Student loan debt isn’t always avoidable, but it isn’t a given—my wife and I completed a combined ten years of college with zero debt between us. If you can’t avoid it, though, make sure that your degree is an investment rather than a liability—I mourn a bit for all of the people going tens of thousands of dollars in debt in pursuit of vague liberal arts degrees with no idea of what they want out of life. If you’re just dropping tuition dollars for lack of a better idea at the moment, just withdraw and go wander around Europe for a few weeks—I guarantee you’ll spend less and learn more in the process.

6. Learn the ancient art of rhetoric. The elements of rhetoric, in all of their forms, are what make the world go around—because they are what prompt the decisions people make. If you develop an understanding of how they work, while everyone else is frightened by flames and booming voices, you will be able to see behind veils of communication and see what levers little men are pulling. Not only will you develop immunity from all manner of commercials, marketing, hucksters and salesmen, to the beautiful speeches of liars and thieves, you’ll also find yourself able to craft your speech in ways that influence people. When you know how to speak in order to change someone’s mind, to instill confidence in someone, to quiet the fears of a child, then you will know this power firsthand. However, bear in mind as you use it that your opponent in any debate is not the other person, but ignorance.

7. You are responsible to everyone, but you’re responsible for yourself. I believe we’re responsible to everyone for something, even if it’s something as basic as an affirmation of their humanity. However, it should most often go far beyond that and manifest itself in service to others, to being a voice for the voiceless. If you’re reading this, there are those around you who toil under burdens larger than yours, who stand in need of touch and respect and chances. Conversely, though, you’re responsible for yourself. Nobody else is going to find success for you, and nobody else is going to instill happiness into you from the outside. That’s on you.

8. Learn to see reality in terms of systems. When you understand the world around you as a massive web of interconnected, largely interdependent systems, things get much less mystifying—and the less we either ascribe to magic or allow to exist behind a fog, the less susceptible we’ll be to all manner of being taken advantage of However…

9. Account for the threat of black swan events. Sometimes chaos consumes the most meticulous of plans, and if you live life with no margins in a financial, emotional, or any other sense, you will be subject to its whims. Take risks, but backstop them with something—I strongly suspect these people who say having a Plan B is a sign of weak commitment aren’t living hand to mouth. Do what you need to in order to keep your footing.

10. You both need and don’t need other people. You need others in a sense that you need to be part of a community—there’s a reason we reflexively pity hermits. Regardless of your theory of anthropogenesis, it’s hard to deny that we are built for community, and that ‘we’ is always more than ‘me.’ However, you don’t need another person to make your life have meaning—this idea that Disney has shoved through our eyeballs, that there’s someone out there for all of us if we’ll just believe hard enough and never stop searching, is hokum… because of arithmetic, if nothing else. Establish your own life—then, if there’s a particular person that you can’t help but integrate, believe me, you’ll know.

\n
\n
3. Spend your life with rule-breakers. Marry them. Befriend them. Work with them. Spend weekends with them. No matter how much power you become possessed of, you’ll never be able to make someone care—so gather close the caring.
\n
\n
\n
\n
7. You are responsible to everyone, but you’re responsible for yourself. I believe we’re responsible to everyone for something, even if it’s something as basic as an affirmation of their humanity. titleCSOs rate UCTH high in financial probity, healthcare delivery
body

The Civil Society Groups for Good Governance says the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital(UCTH) has creditably acquitted itself in the area of transparency, financial probity and service delivery. The Groups’ President, Mr Dominic Ogakwu, who briefed newsmen on Monday in Abuja, said they independently assessed UCTH as a pilot site for the take-off of its Universal Health Advocacy. Ogakwu said that the advocacy was aimed at keeping Nigerians better Nigerians and non-Nigerians better informed of the activities of the Federal Government’s commitment and achievements in the Universal Health Coverage (UHC). “Perhaps a way to further strengthen advocacy for additional resources for health is to demonstrate capacity for efficient and transparent spending.

“Health financing research indicates that in order to secure more money for health, it is vital health ministries and agencies to demonstrate that the allocations would be efficiently and transparently disbursed and expended. “In a fiscally constrained country such as Nigeria, adopting robust resource tracking tools to ensure accountability for public resources on healthcare is key; hence the achievements record by UCTH in the last five years stood out as a testament,’’ he said. He said that the Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Prof. Thoams Agan, had significantly transformed the hospital since he took over as he relocated the hospital to its permanent site.

Ogakwu said that the groups’ independent assessment revealed that the clinical service delivery bed occupancy increased from 47 per cent in 2011 to 85 per cent in 2016 while new out-patient attendance increased from 70 per cent in 2011 to 99.5 per cent in 2017.

He listed some recent achievements of the UCTH to include completion of Dialysis Centre with commencement of dialysis services, upgrading of Orthopaedic unit in surgery department to full-fledged department with staff complement. Also listed are Endoscopic procedure, installation of CT scan, and 3D Ultrasound machine for Radiology department. According to him, services have been introduced in specialised clinical areas that were lacking-Nephrology, Cardiothoracic surgery and Gastroenterology.

He said that UCTH had also made commendable strides in infrastructural development due to prudent deployment of resources.

Source: promonaija

titleFive Countries You Can Only Visit Through Government Sanctioned Tours
body

There are currently five countries that allow American visitors entry only if traveling on government sanctioned tours. These countries are Cuba, North Korea, Bhutan, Tibet (not officially a country but we’ll include for the sake of this story), Turkmenistan, and Iran.
If after reading the above list of countries you’re thinking, “I wouldn’t visit any of those places even if I were paid to do so,” stop reading immediately. However, for those of you with even the slightest interest in immigration procedures and countries that Americans don’t often visit, this article will intrigue you immensely.
Note: The below focuses solely on tourist travel for USA citizens. Non-USA nationals may face similar stipulations for several of these countries.Cuba
In recent years, the US Government has offered more legal ways to enter Cuba. Today, we will be focusing on traveling as a tourist to Cuba (or as the government calls it “people to people” travel).
In a phone interview with Tom Popper, President at Insight Cuba, Tom was able to provide some “insight” on the process of US Citizens legally entering Cuba.
Insight Cuba, or any other US tour operator, for that matter, offering such Cuban tours, must obtain a “People to People” license from the Office of Foreign Assets Control, which is sanctioned by the US Treasury. This license is valid for only two years, but can be continued if the operator qualifies and remains in good standing.
For tours to qualify for P2P, three to four activities must be arranged by the operator for each full travel day. For travelers to be considered legal visitors to Cuba, they must participate in all activities (unless fallen ill or other circumstances arise). Simply put, you cannot book a tour, ditch the tour group and head straight to the beach or do your own thing.
The actual paperwork of the traveler to enter Cuba is quite easy. Once you’ve booked your licensed tour, you simply send a scanned copy of your passport information page to the operator. There is no true visa to acquire for US citizens. Since the tour operator is already licensed, you being accompanied by them is all you need to be a legal traveler. With your tour, you will also need to purchase a charter flight package. If you were to look on Expedia, Orbitz, etc., you’d see no such offerings for flights to Cuba from the USA. The tour operator has contracted with private carriers that are required to provide the US Treasury any information they request, i.e. passenger manifests.
Tourist Card – Any US national entering Cuba will be required to purchase a Tourist Card. In the case of a US charter flight, this Tourist Card will be included with your flight package. If flying from outside the US, these Tourist Cards are sold by your airline before boarding your flight. The cost is approximately $35.
North Korea
US Citizens will most likely enter North Korea through China for two reasons. One, the Pyongyang airport has limited international destinations and two; Beijing is likely where you’ll obtain your North Korean visa. So first, Americans will need to acquire a multiple entry China visa (with Allied Passport ideally!) since a visa-free transit is not applicable in this situation, according to the State Department.
North Korea does not have representation in the United States (meaning there’s no embassy in Washington, DC) so tour operators offering North Korean tours, such as popular Koryo Tours, arrange your visa usually a minimum of four weeks before entry. Once you’ve booked a tour, to start the visa processing you’ll need to fill out a questionnaire, provide a scan of your passport and also email the operator a passport-like photo. From that point on, the tour operator will take care of the grunt work (including your airfare from Beijing to Pyongyang) with the North Korean Foreign Ministry.
So your tour is booked, and you’ve made it to Beijing and are boarding your flight to Pyongyang. Now what? Here’s the fun part. When boarding you will hand over your passport to your tour operator and won’t see it again for the duration of your North Korea trip! Best of all, there is no visa or documents you are shown to verify you are eligible to enter North Korea. Also, when you arrive back to Beijing and your passport is returned, expect not to see a single entry or exit stamp or fancy visa label inside.
On your tour you’ll be escorted closely. There are no options to roam about solo. The only time you’ll feel truly independent is inside your hotel. Also, make note when departing the country your digital cameras will be inspected by border patrol agents and don’t be surprised if some of those photos get deleted.
Bhutan
According to the US State Department Bhutan Travel webpage:
All visas are approved in the capital, Thimphu, and are only issued to tourists who have booked travel with a local licensed tour operator, either directly or through a foreign travel agent. Applications for tourist visas are submitted by the local tour operator (See the Association of Bhutanese Tour Operators website for further information). All visitors, including those on official U.S. government business, must obtain visa clearance from Thimphu before travelling to Bhutan. Visa clearance takes at least 10 days to process and airplane tickets to Bhutan cannot be purchased without visa clearance. At your point of entry into Bhutan, immigration authorities will stamp a visa into your passport upon payment of $40 U.S. You will also need to provide two passport photos. Tourist visas are usually granted for the scheduled travel period.
What is exclusively unique about travel to Bhutan is this country sets a minimum daily tariff for its visitors. This tariff is an all inclusive rate which includes your accommodations, transportation, meals, local travel guides, essentially paying for everything outside of non-essentials (e.g. mementos).
Bhutan’s largest airport serves limited international destinations including very select cities in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, and Singapore giving visitor’s an excuse to visit other exotic countries on the same trip!
Tibet
In order to visit Tibet you’ll need to obtain a China visa first. Secondly, booking an organized tour is mandatory. Your tour operator, after receiving a copy of the traveler’s passport information page and China visa, will apply through the Tibet Tourism Bureau, for your Tibet Travel Permit. When taking a train or flight into Tibet you’ll be required to show this permit during check-in.The ordinary Tibet Travel Permit is only valid for travel within Lhasa City. Any travel outside the city, you’ll be required to apply for additional permits. For Lhasa tours, you’ll be assigned a tour guide. “Tours” can be as small as one person. Even though you are required to be on a tour, unlike some other countries on this list there are no activity requirements and if desired, you can explore the city unsupervised.
Turkmenistan
In order to visit Turkmenistan as a tourist you’ll need to book an organized tour. Once booked, your government authorized tour provider will request a copy of the traveler’s passport information page and will apply for a tourist authorization through the Turkmenistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Generally, this authorization is never valid for more than three weeks and is date specific. Meaning, your stay in-country is limited to the exact dates the visa is written for and the visa cannot be extended in country. Once you’ve finally obtained that authorization, you will then need to apply for the visa itself either directly through the embassy or using a visa service in Washington, DC. Visa processing takes two weeks in Washington.
Your tour guide is required to accompany you throughout your travels with the exception of sightseeing in the capital, Ashgabat. If you plan on visiting only the capital, a transit visa is potentially a better option.
A transit visa is usually valid for only five days and you’ll need to submit your application directly to the embassy in Washington DC. Transit visas are not available on arrival.
Iran
Your visa to Iran, surprisingly, is no more difficult to obtain than any other country we’ve discussed.
Here are a couple passport questions to ask yourself before booking your mandatory tour and applying for your Iranian visa:
Does your passport have any evidence of Israeli travel? If yes, Allied can assist in either renewing your passport or applying for a 2nd passport.Does your passport expire soon? Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond your exit from Iran.Once you’ve okayed these questions your next step is to book an endorsed tour and begin the visa application process.
All nationalities are required to have an entry visa to Iran. For Americans, the visa validity will only be granted for the actual length of stay of your tour. If you decide to spend a few extra days in Iran before or after your formal tour, this can be arranged by the tour company and added to the length of the visa.
The most grueling aspect of obtaining a visa to Iran is getting a visa reference number which comes from the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Fortunately, your tour operator will process the paperwork for this. You’ll need to fill out a Reference Number Application (supplied by the operator) and a scanned copy of your passport.
Once your visa authorization number is granted, it is only valid for 30 days; therefore, you’ll need to apply for your visa at your most local Iranian consulate as soon as possible. Although, Washington, DC doesn’t have an official embassy, Iran does have an “Interest Section” located within an office building leased by the Government of Pakistan.
Once your application has been submitted to the consulate (either by you personally or by a third party service) it usually takes five to seven business days to process.

Three completed Iran visa applications (write the authorization number on the top of each page)

Three passport type photos

Physical passport with 6 months validity beyond trip completion and one blank visa page

One copy of flight itinerary – proof of entry and exit from Iran

Copy of your tour voucher

Payment in the form of a money order

Once you have arrived in Iran (for Americans) you’ll be assigned a mandatory escort at the airport who will transport you to your hotel. In Tehran you are able to explore independently, but anywhere outside the city you’ll be required to stay with the tour group.wisefares make all of these easier for you when visiting any of these countries
