| title | 10 things you thought were vegan that aren't |
| body | I've been vegan for a little more than two years. Occasionally, I eat honey if I know where it's sourced. Does admitting this mean I shouldn't identify as a vegan? Or, as an episode of "The Simpsons" taught me, maybe I'm just not a Level 5 Vegan. Lisa: Oh, the earth is the best! That's why I'm a vegetarian. Jesse: Heh. Well, that's a start. Lisa: Uh, well, I was thinking of going vegan. Jesse: I'm a level 5 vegan—I won't eat anything that casts a shadow. If Level 5 Vegans exist, surely they would read a new book called Veganissimo A to Z: A Comprehensive Guide to Identifying and Avoiding Ingredients of Animal Origin in Everyday Products (The Experiment, 2013). The dictionary-style book takes knowing what animal products are in your food, supplements, cosmetics and even electronics to a new, transparent level, helping you navigate confusing labels. Who is a veganissimo? The book defines it as "one who is vegan to the highest possible standard" or "the most vegan" that a vegan can be. Armed with this book's knowledge, is it possible to completely live without any animal byproducts in today's world? I'll let you be the judge. Here are 10 things you thought were vegan that may not be—and that you may not be able to avoid. 1. Glue Could the books you own not be vegan? Veganissimo states that animal glue is traditionally used in paper and wood processing, bookbinding, painting, conservation/restoration and for making musical instruments and furniture. Animal glue can be made of animal proteins such as gelatin, which is created by boiling animal tissues. 2. Photo prints Photos, both printed commercially and at-home, use paper that contains gelatin. Alternatives? Non-photo quality paper. 3. Vaccines Your flu shot as well as any other vaccine you get is not entirely free of animal substances, according to Veganissimo. Classically, vaccines were created by infecting pathogens into fertilized chicken eggs, then destroying the eggs and extracting the pathogen serum. Modern methods include using cell cultures obtained from the tissues of animals, such as dog kidneys. These samples can be reproduced without addition sample-taking from animals. 4. LCD screens and displays TV screens may not be vegan + 9 more things you thought were vegan that aren't! Liquid crystals found in screens on TVs, computers and cell phones may be based on cholesterol taken from animals. 5. Batteries Gelatin is used in metal processing to improve metal's structure, such as cadmium in batteries. Animal fats and gelatin are used in many technical applications to which we owe the comforts of our life… and "at present it is extremely difficult—it not impossible—to find alternatives," write the authors. 6. Vitamin D Some vitamin D dietary supplements source vitamin D3 from animals. Look for vitamin D3 supplements that are produced from non-animal sources and clearly labeled "vegan." 7. Clear fruit juices, beer and wine Gelatin, egg white, isinglass (fish glue), casein (milk protein) or activated carbon are the top choices for the "fined" process, which clears beverages of cloudy substances. The only way to know if an animal substance wasn't used is to ask the producer. 8. Bone china tableware This type of pure white, fine china is made of porcelain that contains bone ash, the residue from burned animal bones. Earthenware or porcelain that's creamy white, or mineral in origin, can be substituted. 9. Sponges (Porifera) Natural sea sponges are plant-like animals that live on the sea floor, and used in the bath, for home cleaning or watercolor painting. Seems obvious, but I hadn't stopped to think about this one before. Synthetic sponges are alternatives. 10. Pharmaceutical drugs Lots of drugs contain hidden animal substances in the form of excipients, ingredients that stabilize or bulk the medicine. The most commonly used substance is lactose (milk sugar), which can be found in tablets. Another is gelatin, which is found frequently in capsules. Look for vegan alternatives which include starch or cellulose. Surprised? Me, too. Share in the comments! |

"body": "I've been vegan for a little more than two years. Occasionally, I eat honey if I know where it's sourced. Does admitting this mean I shouldn't identify as a vegan? Or, as an episode of \"The Simpsons\" taught me, maybe I'm just not a Level 5 Vegan.\n\nLisa: Oh, the earth is the best! That's why I'm a vegetarian. \nJesse: Heh. Well, that's a start. \nLisa: Uh, well, I was thinking of going vegan. \nJesse: I'm a level 5 vegan—I won't eat anything that casts a shadow.\n\nIf Level 5 Vegans exist, surely they would read a new book called Veganissimo A to Z: A Comprehensive Guide to Identifying and Avoiding Ingredients of Animal Origin in Everyday Products (The Experiment, 2013). The dictionary-style book takes knowing what animal products are in your food, supplements, cosmetics and even electronics to a new, transparent level, helping you navigate confusing labels.\nWho is a veganissimo?\n\nThe book defines it as \"one who is vegan to the highest possible standard\" or \"the most vegan\" that a vegan can be. Armed with this book's knowledge, is it possible to completely live without any animal byproducts in today's world?\n\nI'll let you be the judge. Here are 10 things you thought were vegan that may not be—and that you may not be able to avoid.\n\n1. Glue\nCould the books you own not be vegan? Veganissimo states that animal glue is traditionally used in paper and wood processing, bookbinding, painting, conservation/restoration and for making musical instruments and furniture. Animal glue can be made of animal proteins such as gelatin, which is created by boiling animal tissues.\n\n2. Photo prints\nPhotos, both printed commercially and at-home, use paper that contains gelatin. Alternatives? Non-photo quality paper.\n\n3. Vaccines\nYour flu shot as well as any other vaccine you get is not entirely free of animal substances, according to Veganissimo. Classically, vaccines were created by infecting pathogens into fertilized chicken eggs, then destroying the eggs and extracting the pathogen serum. Modern methods include using cell cultures obtained from the tissues of animals, such as dog kidneys. These samples can be reproduced without addition sample-taking from animals.\n\n4. LCD screens and displays\nTV screens may not be vegan + 9 more things you thought were vegan that aren't!\n\nLiquid crystals found in screens on TVs, computers and cell phones may be based on cholesterol taken from animals.\n\n5. Batteries\nGelatin is used in metal processing to improve metal's structure, such as cadmium in batteries. Animal fats and gelatin are used in many technical applications to which we owe the comforts of our life… and \"at present it is extremely difficult—it not impossible—to find alternatives,\" write the authors.\n\n6. Vitamin D\nSome vitamin D dietary supplements source vitamin D3 from animals. Look for vitamin D3 supplements that are produced from non-animal sources and clearly labeled \"vegan.\"\n\n7. Clear fruit juices, beer and wine\nGelatin, egg white, isinglass (fish glue), casein (milk protein) or activated carbon are the top choices for the \"fined\" process, which clears beverages of cloudy substances. The only way to know if an animal substance wasn't used is to ask the producer.\n\n8. | title | What is Electroneum and is it worth to invest in it? |
| body | Those who consider Electroneum a poor investment (I concede that I fall into this group) are likely to be those that scrutinized over the white paper, both of them. Most people probably don’t even realise that there were two separate white papers, one was basically a marketing proposal (http://electroneum.com/overview-...) ; of the company’s concept, and the other was the technical white paper (http://electroneum.com/technical...). Those who consider Electroneum a good investment opportunity are likely to be those who did not concern themselves with reading either white paper, and simply jumped aboard the hype train. My first apprehension with Electroneum, was that the white paper in the manner it is composed, is appealing to a target market that is grappling to understand the technology of the crypto-currency space, but wants in on the action of capitalising on huge profits. I am immediately distrusting of anything, or one, that does not address its/their audience with the assumption that said audience is of supreme intelligence and capable of sensible intellectual reasoning. The alternative by default is that the entity assumes it is addressing an audience of simpletons, and one has to query possible motives for seeking out such an audience. As an investor I want to be putting my money towards ventures that are targeting the brightest and most intelligent minds in the industry. At the time I was advised to invest in Electroneum there were no exchanges that had made a comitted agreement to listing the coin. Even the most useless and rubish coins are capable of making short term proffits with speculation pumps, but even this requires an exchange on which to be traded. I grew concerned that as time went by, and the ICO came to an end, I had still had heard no mention of any exchange where Electroneum tokens could be traded. Furthermore; the blog on the electroneum website that was generating electroneum related news, hadn’t and to the best of my knowledge has still not released any new updates since early-mid August - that is two months of the developers being eerily quiet, AND THAT IS DURING THE ICO. Futhermore the alleged team all had convenient LinkedIn account (not particularly hard to fabricate) links on the website and the featured videos I watched were only computer generated animation videos, cool, but you don’t get to see any real individuals behind the development of the product. There have been allegations that the electroneum ICO is a scam, and these facts give support to such a claim. By comparison; LAToken was doing an ICO at the same time and the team were involved in numerous live stream conferences explaining the technology and getting involved with the community, far more convincing for the prospective investor. LAToken also had an extensive website and trading platform of their own already operating, while electroneum presented nothing more than vague wish-washy ideas for some future plans. They main aspect of this technology by design should appeal to gamers, yet in the white paper (overview pg 12 ) where they discussed who this can benefit; they only mention speculators and long term investors. No gamers? There is also no mention of any partnerships or colaborative plans with major online games to adopt and promote the technology and use the currency. Had there been mention of agreement with online games like DOTA, WOW, CSGO, GTA5, etc. etc. to experiment and use electroneum; my perspective on the currency’s potential would be very different. But maybe the team is legit, maybe they have been too busy to update their site, maybe a number of exchanges are about to announce the listing of electroneum, maybe the price of the coin will rocket to 1000X it’s value in the first week of trading… Lets consider what the coin really has to offer (or more realistically doesn’t have to offer) Andy Denton, one of the main advisers of the electroneum team, is listed as having years of experience in online gaming, and in my estimation is thus likely to be the source of the only creditable aspect of the electroneum concept: a crypto-currency that can function as an inter-game store of wealth. This was a really cool concept, as gamers spend enormous amounts of time on games and a means of enabling players to cash out of games into a currency that is fluid among all games. This is indeed inspirational, and has huge potential since the gaming industry is not an insignificant market, it is also a market that is likely to be familiar with the crypto-currency space so adoption should be easy and rapid. The white paper also mentioned the idea of producing the necessary apps/games to enable gaming consoles (X-box, Play Station, etc.) to mine while not being used - another fantastic idea! unfortunately these terrific concepts were as fare as the white paper inspired, beyond this the team, regrettably, appears to have become over obsessed with marketing rather than delivering anything of substance. Like I mentioned previously, despite this being a gaming focused concept, no affiliation was formed with any major games (or minor to my knowledge). They want to introduce crypto mining for mobile devices. Sounds cool. So the team did some research but found that the devices overheated, depleted data, slowed down the phone until it froze and became unusable, as would have been expected by anyone who comprehends the computational power required to process hashing. But instead of conceding that their novel concept was not practically feasible, the team have decided to invent an app “a mining app”, that simulates the “mining experience”. It uses the available bandwidth on the device to calculate and distribute coins to the user relative to the bandwidth while the app is running, but it doesn’t actually mine the blockchain, it just calls it mining to give the user an “experience of mining crypto-currency”. I nearly threw up when I read this - my goodness it is pathetic! Its like playing “shop-shop” when you are three years old and our parents are trying to get you to grasp the concept of money and exchange, while everything is just pretend. You can be assured that any coin that is freely distributed for simply running such an app is truly worthless. So the mining app wastes your data, to accomplish nothing, and “rewards” you with free “worthless” coins. Further more, because electroneum is targeting a mobile user market the entire platform is based on the app. They apparently have the real mining available for PC which is plausibly decentralised, but every other aspect of the platform operates through the app which is centralised (this is admitted in the white paper). Even if the mining (real mining, not “app miningg experience”) can take place in a decenttralised manner, this is redundant if a user has to work through a centralised app anyway in order to exchange with the currency. Moving along. The team have decided to design it such that the electroneum currency will have only two decimal places, because apparently the amount of (for example bitcoin), required to purchase a can of coca-cola typically equates to something like 0.000012 which is an “un-human number” (this time I’m sure I did actually taste vomit in my throat). Based on the premise that most other crtpto-currencies generate small numbers of coins (eg. 21 million in case of bitcoin), they concluded that by simply increasing the number of coins they were going to generate to 100 billion, that the currency would then be able to operate with only two decimal places and keep the respective prices in electroneum to human numbers. Clearly no one on the electroneum team has the slightest grasp of how economics works- this is not how it works, this is not how anything works. Somehow the team is completely oblivious to the fact that for the first two years of its existence; the price of Bitcoin was less than 1$ USD, famously the first real-world transaction with bitcoin for two pizzas cost 10 000 USD !!! Similarly the price of electroneum is going to start at <0.01 so any real world prices are going to be equally “un-human” anyway, but on the other side of the spectrum. To suggest that some numbers are “un human” is just ridiculous (were only dealing with rational numbers, we haven’t even breached the realm of irrational le alone imaginary numbers, and mankind grasped these concepts many centuries ago). The point being that the real world prices in bitcoin are only so small because bitcoin has been so successful and so the value has appreciated over years to reach this point. Ridiculously small prices are the result of a ridiculously strong, valuable currency, which is surely what you are wanting if you are going to be investing your money in it. Electroneum foolishly propose their currency price will reflect that of bitcoin’s current price, with the decimal place having simply been adjusted a few spaces. What bullshit. The more fundamental problem with having set the decimal place at only two; is that in the most unrealistically ambitious scenario that electroneum reaches even 1/6 that of bitcoin (BTC = 6 000 USD) such that 1 electroneum = 1 000 USD; the smallest possible increment of electroneum would = 10 USD. This means that you would have to pay the equivalent of 10 USD even for an item that would typically only cost 50 cents because the currency can literally go no lower than that; 0.01 electroneum is literally the smallest denomination that can exist. Hence a 10$ bottle of wine and a 4$ case of coca-cola would both equate to the minimum 0.01 electroneum - a currency that cannot distinguish between the value of these items at it’s strength, is not a currency that is going to realise commercial success. I will not let a single cent of mine anywhere near a bunch of clowns who cannot grasp the basics of monetary economics. So in summary: Couple of cool concepts, zero substance, dubious absence of development team, some completely dumb bullshit and minimal to zero understanding of how money functions. Given how much I’m hearing people going on about electroneum, I expect the price may well explode if any exchange does open its listing, but will gradually deflate to near nothing after that. Your typical pump ’n dump basically is what I expect |

| title | What is the best cryptocurrency that will boom in 2018? |
| body | Most have potential to increase — I say most, because there truly are some crap coins out there, those that were released only because some programmer wanted to throw something out in the market in hopes s/he could get rich quick (or they hope to). RUP is one of my favorite coins that I hold in my portfolio! It’s currently less than USD 0.20. and has good potential at increasing in 2018. I believe it’s currently undervalued and as more people learn about this coin, it’s value will increase in 2018. Now with that said, if the reason you are asking is to help make an investment decision, please be sure you do your own research before buying or investing in any cryptocurrency - you want to invest in something that you believe in, and one that you’ve researched — not because some one here on the internet says it’s a good choice or option. I encourage you to review their website and whitepaper at www.rupeeblockchain.org. Here are a few reasons why I personally favor RUP and have it in my portfolio: Only two months in the making (relaunch was late Sept ‘17) and has already shown great increase (Sept 1: 97 satoshi; Current: 1,200 satoshi) Focused on South Asia - population alone of India (the largest country that uses fiat rupee) is expected to surpass China in a few years. Branding - the name Rupee is a well known in many south Asian countries as a fiat currency. Low supply (only ~22 million currently in circulation) Fast processing - lower transaction fees. One benefit alone here is the number of people living abroad in the US that send money back home to their families. Evaluation of mining algorithm being used by team with potential of changing to equihash — making mining possible for more people (this has been discussed by the team in their telegram group and posted on their twitter). Rupeebase, a key roadmap item slated for starting mid 2018, that will function as both an exchange and marketplace. Disclaimer - This is not investment advice, please do your own research before investing in any cryptocurrency. |
