They worry a lot about everything, but especially things that are not worth worrying about. \n\nI’m not one of them. I rarely worry about things. Instead, I make plans and then act on my plans. \n\nWhat makes me different? \n\nI’m different partly because I grew up around hippies who are even-tempered and easy-going. I’m different partly because nearly all of my plans over the past 26 years have produced the results I wanted. But most of all, I’m different because I recognize the difference between small issues and big issues. \n\nSmall Things\n\nAn issue is small if it meets these criteria:\n1.\tIt impacts only me\n2.\tThe impact on me has a short duration or time scale, between minutes and one week\n3.\tThe issue is easy to manage because there are not many interacting parts\n\nAn issue is big if it meets the opposite criteria:\nA.\tIt impacts more people than just me\nB.\tThe impact has a medium-term to long-term duration or time scale, between from one month to one year to a lifetime\nC.\tThe issue is complex, with many interacting parts that must be carefully managed\n\nI can apply these criteria to specific cases. \n\nX. I break a plate accidentally while doing the dishes. \n\nThis is a small issue because the broken dish impacts only me. The impact is short-term because the plate is one of ten, so I can easily use another plate. The issue is easy to manage because I can easily buy another plate.\n\nY. I get a poor evaluation from my students after teaching a class\n\nThis is a big issue because it means my performance affected many students. The impact is potentially long-term because I may not be hired to teach next school year. The issue is complex to manage because I have to deal with each student’s experience, my reputation with other teachers, and my university’s administration, all simultaneously. \n\nIf I make effective plans, then I should be able to pre-empt the big issue by making sure I have the materials and lesson plans to teach my students effectively. This places the burden on me to know the subject well, to know what kind of students I will teach before the class starts, and to know how much time I have to teach the students in every class. I must be good at managing my time outside of class and my students’ time in class to help give my students a good experience over the course of the class.",

He probably has separate electronic devices for different purposes. \n\nIn contrast, a 21st-century person has a smart phone, an iPad, or some other electronic device that is multi-functional. He has more communication with people on social media than in the physical world. He watches videos online constantly, uploads every day, blogs through multiple accounts every day, and thus has multiple digital identities that he manages every minute, every day. The 21st-century person integrates all segments of his life with social media tools and information technologies so that he is online 24/7. He has no \"down time\". \n\nThe 20th-century person still has a fragmented life, with friends in different places ( “little boxes”) who don't know each other. \n\nThe 20th-century person still believes in privacy. The 21st-century person does not. \n\nThe 21st-century person expresses and records everything and has no sense of boundaries.       "body": "Hello, as a newbie to Steemit, I owe you a great deal of gratitude for reading my first post. Since I have called this post “Welcome to My Third Life!”, the reader is obviously wondering what happened in the first two lives. Did I die twice? \n\nNo, I did not die physically. However, I am highly unusual, even unique, because I have had 2 distinct lives so far. The first life was from my birth to August 22, 1992. The second life was from August 22, 1992, to August 26, 2017. \nDuring my first life, I grew up in the American Southwest. I had unique parents: singers who were also hippies (this was the late 1970s). If you know anything about the 1960s and 1970s in the United States, you know that there were three parallel social movements: the civil right movement, the anti-war movement, and the equal rights movement, all involving Baby Boomers who protested for and against great causes. In my case, my mother was involved in the anti-war movement and the equal rights movement. My father served in the United States Air Force for 20 years. I grew up in the environment they created with their fellow singers and hippie friends. I was on stage with my parents from almost the moment I was born. I traveled with my parents to different performance venues for the first 6 or 7 years of my life until they had my sister and settled in Tucson, Arizona, which was a haven for hippies at the time. I sought stability and order after spending my early years on the road, so I entered public school when I was 7 years old and did my best to succeed in this environment. When I was 16 I decided to focus on school, so I gave up most of the things that made me happy, including watching movies, watching TV sitcoms, playing video games on the original Nintendo Entertainment System, and reading comic books. \n\nThrough lots of luck and hard work, including a great deal of pain, suffering, and social isolation, I turned into an over-achiever in my last 2 years of high school and got into Harvard University for college. Then, 5 years later, after even more hard work mixed with pain, suffering, and social isolation, I graduated from Harvard and got married. Over the course of the next 15 years I had two special-needs kids, earned a Ph.D. while I helped my ex-wife graduate from medical school, taught numerous college classes, wrote over 10,000 pages of unpublished essays, wrote over 35,000 Tweets, interviewed over 200 people in over 450 3-hour shows in an online radio program, self-published 4 books, and got 4 hours of sleep per night while doing all of this simultaneously. Again, this involved hard work, pain, and suffering, but less social isolation. As you can probably tell from this paragraph alone, my second life involved working obsessively and compulsively. I also bought American TV series from the 1950s to the 2000s. In the past 6 months, I have used the Internet to build up a movie collection of almost 8,000 movies. I also got back all the comic books I gave up. Next week I should have a paper accepted for publication. I first visited to run a special summer camp with my wife for Chinese kids to give them am American summer camp experience.
