| title | A Jury of Her Peers |
| body | In “A Jury of Her Peers”, a short story written in 1917 by Susan Glaspell, two female characters are able to solve a mystery that the male characters cannot. Loosely based on the 1900 murder of John Hossack which Glaspell covered while working as a journalist for the Des Moines Daily, it is seen as an example of early feminist literature. The story begins on a cold, windy day in fictional Dickson County with Martha Hale being abruptly called to ride to a crime scene. They arrive at the home of Wrights where John Wright was murdered. Mrs Hale immediately feels guilty for not visiting her friend Minnie Foster since she married John twenty years prior. Once inside the house, as Mr Hale delivers a long-winded account of what he had witnessed the day before the murder, Martha and the sheriff’s wife Mrs. Peters piecing together the minute details of his statement find evidence of a provocation and motives for the suspect Anyone who’s ever studied in an American high school would have read this story as a part of the American short stories unit on the curriculum, as I did, aged 14. The two women’s understanding of their ‘peer’ in question extends beyond mere psychology but a deep resonance with the challenges they all face as “midwestern rural women” and the empathy they draw from such resonance. Seeing Serena Williams’s passionate plea to the umpire last week and the media frenzy that followed, I suddenly remembered this story I hadn’t given much thought since high school. After all, “What has a 1917 story about rural midwestern women have got to do with Serena Williams?”, I can almost hear you ask. Bear with me. Whether we are in the forecourt, or in a rural home in the back of the beyond, or the glitzy skyscrapers of Manhattan, the grey and often drizzly Square Mile of London, or in the fast paced, fast-growing cosmopolitans around Africa from Lagos to Nairobi to Luanda, we are forever in court. Only a week prior, Serena Williams featured in Nike’s controversial 30th anniversary alongside former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The art work featured a young Serena playing tennis says, for example: “Girls from Compton don’t play tennis. They own it.” Last week’s controversial decision which saw Serena penalized by chair umpire Carlos Ramos for a coaching violation and resulted in a deduction of points, the loss of a game and a fine of $17,000 for the player after she smashed her racquet, called Ramos a “thief” explaining she doesn’t “cheat to win. I’d rather lose,” in addition to having an on-court argument with tournament director Brian Earley is just another in a long series of decisions against Serena. Over the course of a stellar career, the legend has been mocked, harassed, demonised over and over again. The behaviour often overlooked as ‘passion for the game’ when displayed by men was inexcusable acts of aggression coming from a young, black woman from Compton – even when she owned the game, the set, the match. In a post-match interview, Serena spoke openly about the barriers she faced in this match and over the course of her career: “I’m going to continue to fight for women and to fight for us to have equal [rights]. I just feel like the fact that I have to go through this is just an example for the next person that has emotions and that want to express themselves, and they want to be a strong woman, and they’re going to be allowed to do that because of today.” After the upset, tennis legend Billie Jean King came to Serena’s defense, writing, “Women are treated differently in most arenas of life. This is especially true for women of colour. And what played out on the court yesterday happens far too often. It happens in sports, in the office and in public service. Ultimately, a woman was penalized for standing up for herself.” The truth is, Serena, Venus, and now Naomi – in a court of men, we are most times even more unfortunate than Minnie Foster. At least she got a fair trial by her peers. |

CLARY Novak Djokovic clinched his third US Open title on Sunday with a 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 triumph over Juan Martin del Potro, taking him level with Pete Sampras’s mark of 14 Grand Slams. Djokovic, playing in his eighth final in New York and already the champion in 2011 and 2015, is now just three Slams behind Rafael Nadal and six back from the all-time record 20 held by Roger Federer. It was also the third time the 31-year-old Serb — who missed last year’s tournament with an elbow injury which sent his career into a mini-crisis — completed the Wimbledon-US Open double. “I want to say Pete, I love you, you’re my idol,” said Djokovic of Sampras. “To the support of the loved ones, my kids, my wife, my small team of people that has been there with me through difficult times as well,” added the Serb who underwent elbow surgery after the Australian Open in January.” For world number three Del Potro, it was a heartbreaking experience coming in just his second Slam final, nine years after he was crowned US Open champion before a long battle with wrist injuries pushed him into depression and to the brink of retirement. “When I had my surgery I could truly understand what Juan Martin was going through when he had surgeries that kept him away form the tour for two or three years,” added Djokovic. It was Djokovic’s 15th win over the Del Potro and fifth in five at the Slams. It came in a final which was business-like rather than thrilling, a relief for a tournament still reeling from the controversial women’s final on Saturday. The result also means that 50 of the last 55 majors have been won by the ‘Big Four’ of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Andy Murray. ‘My idol’ Djokovic “I was so happy to be playing the final against this magnificent idol,” said Del Potro of his close friend Djokovic. “He knows that he’s one of my friends on tour and he knows he’s one player I want to watch win on tour. Of course I’m sad to lose but I’m happy for Novak as well. You deserve to win.” With the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof closed as heavy rain swept New York, conditions were slow and sluggish. After taking just two points off Del Potro’s first three service games, Djokovic, in his 23rd final at the majors, pounced to break for 5-3. The key was his success with a lung-busting 22-shot rally and he pocketed the set when the 29-year-old del Potro netted a forehand. It was only the second set dropped by the Argentine at the tournament. For Djokovic, it was an illustration of him growing into the championships as he took his run of consecutive sets won to 14, stretching back to the second round against Tennys Sandgren. Djokovic was soon 3-1 up in the second set before Del Potro carved out his first break point of the match to level at 3-3. He had three more chances in the eighth, all saved by Djokovic in a marathon 20-minute game which left even Hollywood superstar Meryl Streep clasping her head in astonishment. The effort took its toll on a suddenly weary-looking Del Potro as a 95-minute set was claimed by Djokovic in the tiebreak. Del Potro was looking at having to become the first man since Pancho Gonzales in 1949 to win the US title from two sets down. Djokovic sprinted into a 3-1 lead in the third set before a battling Del Potro clung on, hitting back for 3-3. But off the back of a 24-shot rally, Djokovic broke again for 5-3 and he was within tantalising touching distance of his 14th Grand Slam title, just three months after he had left Roland Garros in despair after a shattering quarter-final exit. |

| title | Australian Open director wants coaching rule ‘sorted out’ |
| body | Craig Tiley Coaching from the players’ box is banned during Grand Slam matches but Serena Williams was incensed when chair umpire Carlos Ramos gave her a code violation warning after her coach was seen making a hand gesture during her defeat to Naomi Osaka. Some players and pundits have criticised the rule as being hard to police, spottily enforced and highly subjective, and called for the ban to be lifted. Williams was later docked a point for breaking a racquet and a game after calling Ramos a “thief” in separate incidents after the coaching violation. But Tiley declined to criticise the 23-times grand slam champion. “It all centred around coaching,” Tiley told reporters in Melbourne on Monday. “The sport has to really get itself sorted out on what it does with coaching… Are we going to have coaching? Are we not going to have coaching? What is it going to look like? “The sport needs to get together and sort it out. “Once that’s sorted out, we don’t have the issue.” The Australian Open has marketed itself as the “Asia-Pacific” Grand Slam, and Tiley was excited by the effect Osaka’s triumph might have in attracting Japanese fans to the tournament in January. Osaka became her country’s first Grand Slam winner, while compatriot Kei Nishikori also performed strongly with a run to the men’s semi-finals. “We all see how the Japanese fans flock to see Kei Nishikori,” said Tiley. |

| title | Nigeria top gospel musician Tim Godfrey open up about his life |
| body | With his regular display of uncommon stunts and effulgent acrobatics, Tim Godfrey remains a gospel singer everyone looks out for on stage. His performances are electrifying to say the least. Born and raised in Kaduna, the Abia State indigene hides nothing in this encounter, as he opens up on virtually all issues involving his personal life and career. Enjoy it. How was growing up back in the city of Kaduna? That’s where I grew up. I grew up in a village called Nasarawa. I came from a family of nine. It was one of the most difficult times of my life. We were very, very poor. I couldn’t afford anything good. I hawked on the streets too. It is a mixed feeling for me, right now. I can remember I was once a (bus) conductor with my dad being the driver. A lot of people don’t know that’s how I grew up. I had just one meal in a day. I was also a houseboy for about three years. Did you set out to do music professionally, aside being in the church choir as a teenager? No, I never did, though I loved music quite alright. I was more of a footballer than a singer. I wanted to be a footballer and I did it for a long time. I was already in the adult choir when I got to secondary school. I started teaching myself how to play some instruments, from my uncle I lived with then. What kind of parents do you have? The usual one… How much of care and support did you get from them? We were very poor. I mean very poor, the type that poor people will even call poor. We were leaving the house to be houseboys, so we were never together for long. I lost my dad when I was very young. What informed your choice of gospel music over secular? I have always been a church boy. Most of the secular artistes you know were church boys too. I had so much passion for choirs, and I play about five instruments. I play them really good. I am a complete musician. I started studying the likes of Kirk Franklin, Hezekiah Walker and the rest. They all in- formed the kind of music I do today. They do very detailed music. Even my sound is not totally the religious churchy kind of sound, but I have a way of driving home the message to the people. People say you are the Nigerian version of Kirk Franklin, Micah Stampley and Travis Greene. How does that make you feel? Yes, people have likened me more to Kirk Franklin. Kirk was one of the guys that changed gospel music in America, despite that he was highly criticised. They could say that about me right now because my sound is not religious. I have also got to the level that I have created my own brand. These people and I are very close now and we relate together as international artistes. A lot of people now want to sound like us. Things have really changed such that people want to be like Tim Godfrey. Are you also of the view that gospel music doesn’t really fetch so much money as secular ones? I am not into music because of fame or fortune. It was more about God’s kingdom. Who would have been paying your bills? God supplies all needs. I have a business part, like you see in my office. That is not to say that we don’t get honorarium. The gospel genre is more consistent than the secular and I think it keeps growing. I don’t believe in complaining. I believe in change and we are bringing in the necessary change right now. Recall the first time you appeared on a big stage, how was the experience for you? I think it was Kora Awards in 2006, in South Africa. But the biggest platform was The Experience where we had over 500,000 people in attendance. I have also been in so many big shows in America and across Africa. What challenges do you face as a single father? Men! You don do too much research on top my matter o! I have never talked about that. Okay, my son stays with me. I basically now respect women more because I do all that women do, since I never liked the idea of having a maid. I have to make sure I take care of him, take him to school, drop him off, cook for him and so on. I feel that we don’t give as much credit to women. Are you considering marriage anytime soon? Absolutely! It is one of the things I am hoping would happen this year or hopefully next year. What’s your kind of lady? If I meet the person, I will know. But for now, I am still very single. I don’t think there is anything that is ideal about any human being. Some look at the outwards, but I think I like a lady that is very intelligent. I am matured enough to know what relationship is about. I can’t wait to get married. Are you in a relationship right now? I am not. I am a very honest person. But I am looking forward to get into one. Tim is a fine guy, rich, intelligent and very talented. How do you manage female fans that want more from you? I’ve not really had too much of issues with female fans because I have been able to set standards, to cover me up. I don’t give anybody my contacts. I change my line every two years, just in case it spreads out. If some stubborn ladies push beyond (the limit), I think I have been able to handle it. I can’t get vulnerable. I try to be very careful as much as I can. What sort of feeling do you get when you hear that some gospel artistes are promiscuous? I think we are all human. The reason why you are accused is because you are a celebrity. The people that accuse them are probably not clean too. We all have to be very careful to avoid all sorts, but we all make mistakes. Even as a man of God, you are first a man. What’s your assessment of gospel music in Nigeria? I think it is doing very well. I am not a fan of that phrase – gospel music. I do kingdom sounds. I do whatever God lays in my heart. Anyone that does love songs, in as much as he’s not vulgar, he’s a gospel artiste. I listen to all songs- Wizkid, Davido, and Tiwa etc. I listen to everybody. I believe that you can do whatever you choose to do, so long as you are touching lives. I don’t believe in vulgarism and videos where breasts are revealed. There is always a sound for every situation. In one of your performances, you said that you were able to mobilise some millions of naira for a convert. How did you go about that? I can’t remember saying that but that should be about ‘Fearless’. It has been a God’s project. I can only say God funded everything. I honestly do think that God is my source. Next year, it’s going to be in Eko Hotels. I am one of those people that believe in breaking barriers. I sometimes sell my belongings to get it done. The biggest failure is when you don’t try at all. How rich is Tim Godfrey? I am just a houseboy. I can never say that I am rich. All you see me do is taking bold steps. If you are not rich, how come you have a house in Lekki? (Laughs) Who told you I have a house in Lekki? Honestly, you can’t compare the little things people like us have to what many others have. I am not greedy. As I am, I can carry plantains on my head and walk on the street. My first night in Lagos was (spent) under the bridge in Oshodi. About six to 12 of us lived in one room. So, I have seen that part of life that nothing moves me at all. I have been a music director for 24 years and I have been doing it professionally for 14 years now. If I was doing secular, I probably would have been an uncle to most people they call legends now, but I wait on God and I am very comfortable with myself. So, I think I am just a normal guy. I am not yet there. When I get there, you will know. |

| body | Sleeping for more than eight hours a night could lead to an early death, new research suggests. A global study led by Keele University has found that people who regularly make time for more sleep could end up with a “serious sleep disorder” that disrupts their breathing and causes an increased risk of heart disease. As a result, the researchers, who looked at data from 74 studies, said that excessive sleep could be a “marker” of poor health. Published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, the study examined the link between self-reported sleep, cardiovascular disease and mortality in more than three million participants from 1970 to 2017. The scientists found that a sleep duration of ten hours is linked with 30 per cent increased risks of early death compared to sleeping for seven hours. The study also revealed a 56 per cent increased risk of stroke mortality and a 49 per cent increased risk of cardiovascular mortality for those who slept for more than eight hours. Lead researcher Dr Chun Shing Kwok, who works at Keele University’s Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine, explains: “Our study has an important public health impact in that it shows that excessive sleep is a marker of elevated cardiovascular risk. “Our findings have important implications as clinicians should have greater consideration for exploring sleep duration and quality during consultations. “If excessive sleep patterns are found, particularly prolonged durations of eight hours or more, then clinicians should consider screening for adverse cardiovascular risk factors and obstructive sleep apnoea, which is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep.” The study, which also found that poor sleep quality was associated with a 44 per cent increase in coronary heart disease, is one of many that highlight the impact sleep can have on a person’s physical health. Last month, the University of Sydney revealed that oxygen deprivation caused by sleep apnoea could cause your brain to shrink in the regions which play an important role in memory and which are also affected by dementia. Similarly, a recent study by the University of Glasgow found that an insufficient amount of sleep could also be detrimental to your mental health. The findings concluded that a disrupted circadian rhythm can lead to an increased possibility of developing mood disorders and lower levels of happiness. |
