| title | New Series: "Lady Bits" |
| body | “Lady Bits” is a tongue and cheek title for a new series by Liana Kerzner. The series tackles videogame culture as it exists today. “Lady Bits” will explore the current state of videogame culture with some humour and an open mind. It’s not all fun and games however as the impetus for starting the series is partly an effort to restore the reputation of gamers and their culture by exploring what being a gamer is really about. The series will feature stories from videogamers, developers, and other insiders including Kerzner herself. She will also delve deep into serious questions about videogames and those who play them, in order to demystify aspects of the culture. It should not be understated how important this series is to some videogamers as media representation of gamers has been overwhelmingly negative, particularly in the last few years. “Lady Bits” will attempt to shine a light especially on the positive aspects of the community of gamers as this aspect is sadly not all that well known. Kerzner’s expansive knowledge of media from having worked in Canadian television, games development, and at gaming publications on its own lends to the prospect of a very informative series. It goes without saying that Kerzner is herself a gamer in the full meaning of the term, but in researching the new series she chose to undertake an enormous effort in speaking with countless individuals in the gaming community. While her work on this series may not be rightly considered clinical or even academic, an honest look at gamers is sorely needed today. The project is crowd funded by fans, and possibly some detractors as well. This undertaking is likely of particular personal importance to her and many other gamers in the wake of GamerGate and other scandals. Additionally for Kerzner, being a self identified feminist carries baggage within much of the gaming public following the rise of Anita Sarkeesian. While Kerzner herself is a critic of Sarkeesian’s rise to power and its alleged damage to the industry, it is reasonable to assume that funding for the series and the overall size of Kerzner’s audience has been hampered in Sarkeesian's wake. Kersner is now faced with the unenviable task of cleaning up feminism’s image with gamers as a result, whether she wants to or not. |

| body | I think all your questions boil down to what type of libertarian you are and how you view the law. Are you a libertarian, anarchist, minarchist, or other variant? Do you believe that all taxation is theft? Do you think that all government is force? When is it acceptable to use force? Once you settle some of those questions, or *at a minimum* the question of when the use of force is appropriate, then we can talk about whether we should do away with traffic laws, seat belt laws, pornography laws, and others. I would contend that it is always wrong to initiate force, so any law which intends to affect the peaceful, voluntary interaction of consenting adults is the wrong usage of the law. I would suggest everyone should read The Law by Frédéric Bastiat [1850]. It is essential reading for any lover of liberty. Come join us in the [Steemit Libertarian Chat Channel.](https://steemit.chat/channel/libertarian) I'd be glad to know you more. |

Do you believe that all taxation is theft? Do you think that all government is force? When is it acceptable to use force? \n\nOnce you settle some of those questions, or *at a minimum* the question of when the use of force is appropriate, then we can talk about whether we should do away with traffic laws, seat belt laws, pornography laws, and others. \n\nI would contend that it is always wrong to initiate force, so any law which intends to affect the peaceful, voluntary interaction of consenting adults is the wrong usage of the law. I would suggest everyone should read The Law by Frédéric Bastiat [1850]. | title | Opinion: Analysis of U.S. Strike on Syrian Air Base Part 2 "Confidence is High" |
| body | This article is part of a series. For part one [click here](https://steemit.com/news/@poorlyreported/opinion-analysis-of-u-s-strike-on-syrian-air-base-part-1-motive). UPDATED:201704071649 If you couldn’t tell from the from part one of this series, I cannot say for certain who actually launched the chemical attack. I can shed some light on how governments might make that determination, however. First, it is important to know that most intelligence agencies don’t tend to deal in certainty. It is all about the level of confidence in a number of accumulated sources of intelligence. How many sources agree, how many conflict, how accurate are they likely to be, and what motive do they have to lie. Most of that deals with information gathered from people (HUMINT). This can also include reports from government employees including embassy staff, military personnel, and special operators. HUMINT typically refers to information gathered second or third hand from assets. Agents, also known as human assets or spies, are people who do not work for the government, but provide information to the government. There are many potential motives for someone to do this. They may disagree with the current government, they may do it for money, they may do it for fun/thrill, they may have been blackmailed, they might hope that a foreign government will come to their aid or any number of imaginable reasons. These people are assessed by, and most often recruited by, case officers. Reports from case officers are assessed by psychologists and behavioral analysts. An idea of how trustworthy an asset is still comes down to instinct in many cases, however. Human assets, might provide credible information on who ordered the attack, whether aircraft were flying that night or not, the names of pilots on rotation, where and how chemical munitions are stored, the state of mind of individuals in the chain of command, possible motivations to conduct the strike, and so on. Typically this information is gathered and disseminated by the Central Intelligence Agency directly. If any such agents exist, they may be executed or imprisoned if discovered. There is also, the possibility that assets can be wrong. A miscommunication between an asset and a case officer, a misunderstanding the asset has about those he is reporting on, a desire to force a desired action and so on. More dangerous is what is called a dangle. A dangle is an agent or officer of a foreign government who poses as a double-agent and deliberately makes contact with an enemy case officer. In this context, a CIA case officer. Dangles are especially dangerous, because they can derail entire operations by spoon feeding well crafted false information to us. For these reasons, many people put much more faith in other forms of intelligence. Signals intelligence(SIGINT) is typically information gathered from the collection of electromagnetic emissions and transmissions. Such as the collection of phone calls, e-mails, radio traffic, internet traffic, and the like(COMINT). Basicly anything that has the word communication in it. This source of information is considered more reliable by many, but plenty of spy games involve false transmissions as well. A good historical example you can look into is World War Two. From the enigma machine to Operation Overlord, historical tellings of the war has much to reveal about this discipline of intelligence work. Signals intelligence also includes ELINT. This is the monitoring of enemy radar, telemetry, and other transmissions that are not generally for communication. Using this, the radar from enemy bombers can be detected or even reflections of enemy air defence or air traffic control radar off of enemy bombers. This can verify if certain enemy equipment was likely to be in the area at the time. This and even the aforementioned signals intelligence data can take up to many years to fully analyse. This work is typically carried out by the National Security Agency(NSA). The difficulty in analysing such large datasets is why the NSA operates such large data centers, even when simply supporting other agencies. Related to this is open source intelligence (OSINT). This is information gathered from the news media, social media, and library books. The way you likely get your information. If you are reading this I trust you understand how that works. As you well know though, not all OSINT can be trusted. The video and images coming out of Syria have been called into question by some. It is believed that some or even many of the “white helmet” force, stage scenes to help encourage foreign leadership to provide aid to affected areas. Whether or not their intentions are good, this is utterly unreliable intelligence. The last thing we’ll cover is imagery intelligence(IMINT) and measure and signature intelligence(MASINT). MASINT includes things like the radar on our ships and aircraft. Also, geological data, like seismic activity, which can detect the movement of vehicle convoys, or the sonic booms from low flying supersonic aircraft. If an aircraft of any kind was detected by our radar in the the area of the chemical attack, that would be a big clue. Unfortunately we are unlikely to have had that kind of hardware looking hard enough at that random spot of the world. Similarly, since IMINT includes things like satellite images and aerial photography it is unlikely that we would have been watching that part of the world, at that moment. If we had an image, we might see a silhouette of the bomber in the image. Even if any one of these things proved a portion of the story, we may never be certain of what exactly happened. For example people claimed to have seen bombers and bombs falling that night(OSINT). People were filmed showing symptoms of chemical exposure(OSINT). Autopsies confirm sarin exposure(HUMINT). The Department of Defence has announced that it has a radar track (EMINT) and a satellite photo(IMINT) of the bomber flight. This paints a compelling picture, but are you certain of what happened? Or is it that your “Confidence Is High.” |

| title | Opinion: Analysis of U.S. Strike on Syrian Air Base Part 1 -Motive |
| body | Following a chemical attack that allegedly claimed the lives of more than eighty civilians, the United States conducted an air strike against the Shayrat airbase operated by the Syrian government. This article is part of a series. Part 2 "Confidence Is High". As this is a developing story, it may contain some factual inaccuracies. Please feel free to recommend corrections. On Tuesday, April 4th more than eighty civilians in the area of Khan Sheikhoun, were claimed to have died as the result of an apparent chemical weapons attack. The dead are alleged to have included men, women and children of no known military or political value. The allegiance of these individuals is unknown to us at this time. The United States Department of State is reported to have confirmed the source of the attack. It is claimed that the chemical warhead was delivered via one or more aircraft having flown from Shayrat airbase. As early as the day of the incident, President Trump’s statements seemed to support the idea that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, had ordered the attack(s). By Thursday, April 6th the President of the United States stated the following immediately preceding a missile strike against Syria. "Using a deadly nerve agent, Assad choked out the lives of helpless men, women and children. It was a slow and brutal death for so many. Even beautiful babies were cruelly murdered in this very barbaric attack. No child of God should ever suffer such horror." CBS news has reported that nearly sixty Tomahawk cruise missiles were used in the attack, by U.S. forces against the Syrian military airbase. The BBC has claimed this number to be exactly fifty-nine. First, we have to ask who benefits from such a chemical attack. Next, if and how the U.S. could confidently determine the source of the attack. Then, why such a large number of cruise missiles. And finally, what impact this may have on the geopolitical climate. Those are the facts, as we know them so far. What follows is my personal opinion based on my knowledge and experience and may be entirely incorrect. Motive & Authority: Why might the Syrian government execute a chemical attack against a noncombatant target? It could be terrorism. An effort to “shock and awe” rebel and separatist forces in the region, or more specifically the civilian populations that might support them. Consider this. If your country were invaded would you fight to defend it, or would you stay quiet and let whomever takes power rule over you. A surprising number of people tend to choose the latter when tested. Many have families and other commitments. Some are rather disinterested in the politics so long as they can provide for themselves. This does not even consider people who would openly, or quietly, support regime change. It is not surprising in this light that many people in the Syrian government might regard such people as traitors. “Afterall how have they survived all this time behind enemy lines,” the thinking might go. Though it is not unusual for civilians to get caught in the middle of such wars, we should not expect everyone to uniformly understand that. A motive for a chemical attack by Syrian forces emerges from these conditions. Of course that would require an order from Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, right? Well not exactly. The Syrian military is not known to have an equivalent to the U.S. Permissive Action Link system. It should also be noted that, while legal launch authority in the U.S. lies with the President of the United States, weapons release can be conducted without him. In the event of his death, or under certain alert conditions counterstrikes can be executed without the president’s need to approve the individual actions taken. In other words, the President of the United States can’t type his Gold codes into a warhead to arm it, nor are they even needed to do so. Even with the fairly remote possibility of an errant or rogue detonation of a U.S. nuclear warhead, the U.S. does not even secure its own chemical weapons with such a system. The security of the Syrian chemical weapons release, and ordnance handling procedures should not be expected to be more strict, especially considering the current state of the war. The disarmament program notwithstanding, chemical munitions are likely to still be available to some Syrian military commanders. The government of Syria is unlikely to admit if he has lost control of any fraction of his chemical arsenal, as that would invite foreign intervention. Many nations might be willing to risk outright war with Syria to prevent military grade chemical munitions from reaching the hands of potential terrorists. While I will not expand on it here, there have been defections, and even other problems with disloyalty among Syria’s military ranks since before the current war. (Link provided for context. We do not necessarily endorse or agree with this coverage.) A more likely scenario is the use of chemical weapons by a rogue Syrian officer. This is especially considering how little the Syrian government has to gain from making such an attack. The government, in fact, seems to be winning the war already. Such an escalation only makes sense if all other ordinance has been thoroughly depleted, or if a high value military or political target was the objective. In earnest both scenarios are plausible given the increased use of improvised bombs by the Syrian Air Force. The nature of these improvised bombs limit their effectiveness against, high value targets. The preceding analysis assumes a level of sanity among members of the Syrian government. Such an assumption should not be taken for granted. Though the U.S. government is clearly confident that Syria executed the attack, we should not dismiss that opposition forces had adequate motive and opportunity. First, the forces opposed to the Syrian government are not unified. They are made up of different groups, including Al-Nusra, The Free Syrian Army, Daesh(ISIS), and others. The death of those loyal to any one of these groups would be of no particular loss to the other groups beyond their value as a meat shield that the Syrian forces must cut through. If such people can be sacrificed for a greater benefit, it would be done. It is not uncommon for false flag attacks to be executed in order to procure popular support. If successful, food, medicine, and even lethal military aid can be gotten from the endeavour. The U.S. air strike on a Syrian air base would be precisely the kind of support one would want. If true it would represent an enormous enemy victory. This is possible for two reasons. One, the Syrian government may not have total control of its chemical weapons stockpiles. This may allow enemy forces to procure such weapons. Second, chemical weapons are not magic. It is possible that opposition forces are producing small batches of chemical nerve agent. While such enemy manufactured compounds are likely to be of low purity and volume, the effect would not necessarily be less impactful. It should also be noted that while opposition forces possess artillery and mortar pieces, they are not known to have ever operated a bomber-mission capable aircraft. Could some other organisation have executed the attack? Sure, but until we have more information we will not speculate further. The next report discusses how the U.S. could know who executed such an attack. Part 2 "Confidence Is High" |

The disarmament program notwithstanding, chemical munitions are likely to still be available to some Syrian military commanders.\n The government of Syria is unlikely to admit if he has lost control of any fraction of his chemical arsenal, as that would invite foreign intervention. Many nations might be willing to risk outright war with Syria to prevent military grade chemical munitions from reaching the hands of potential terrorists. While I will not expand on it here, there have been defections, and even other problems with disloyalty among Syria’s military ranks since before the current war. (Link provided for context. We do not necessarily endorse or agree with this coverage.)\n A more likely scenario is the use of chemical weapons by a rogue Syrian officer. The nature of these improvised bombs limit their effectiveness against, high value targets.\nThe preceding analysis assumes a level of sanity among members of the Syrian government. Such an assumption should not be taken for granted.\n Though the U.S. government is clearly confident that Syria executed the attack, we should not dismiss that opposition forces had adequate motive and opportunity. \nIt is not uncommon for false flag attacks to be executed in order to procure popular support. If successful, food, medicine, and even lethal military aid can be gotten from the endeavour. The U.S. air strike on a Syrian air base would be precisely the kind of support one would want. If true it would represent an enormous enemy victory.\nThis is possible for two reasons. It should also be noted that while opposition forces possess artillery and mortar pieces, they are not known to have ever operated a bomber-mission capable aircraft.\nCould some other organisation have executed the attack? Sure, but until we have more information we will not speculate further.\n \n\nThe next report discusses how the U.S. could know who executed such an attack.\nPart 2 \"Confidence Is High\"",

| title | Is Philip DeFranco A Modern Day Cronkite? |
| body | Whatever your opinion of Walter Cronkite's credibility as a journalist, the comparison between him and Philip DeFranco has been made. Is there a reason beyond a simple comparison of integrity? Maybe, the answer to that lies deep in the past. First we must answer why Television news exists at all. In part the answer is obvious. Would you rather live in a world without TV or a world with it? In spite of those who long for a simpler existence, most of us would choose to have this convenience. But, why news on TV? The answer will be more surprising to most of you. Before the age of twenty-four hour a day cable news and the news hay day in the 1980's, news on TV was never a sure commercial success. In fact some could argue that it still isn't. Broadcasting television news is the law, sort of. The Federal Communications Commission, created by Congress with the passing of the Communications Act of 1934, respected the power of broadcasting and the limitations of radio spectrum that would one day exist, as Congress intended. Hearkening back to the will of Thomas Jefferson to better regulate the commons, the FCC regulated public broadcasting in such a way that the term "public broadcasting" stuck around in the lexicon. The air space and bandwidth for TV AM and FM belong to the people of the United States. If you follow all the rules the FCC sets forth they might let you broadcast on these channels, or not. The understanding that the government held all of the power, seriously affected early broadcasting. Requirements for meeting the needs of the public were relatively significant. Among them over the years were requirements for studio facilities at every broadcast station, maximum number of hours dedicated to a single network, minimum hours of locally produced content, no obscenity or profanity, minimum broadcast hours per day, and so on. Relevant here though is the so called "Fairness Doctrine." In 1949 the courts struck down the Mayflower Doctrine. Enforced from 1941 up to that point, it prohibited editorializing on the radio. By the end of 1949, the Fairness Doctrine was in place. It required, instead, that there be adequate coverage of public issues and that it fairly represented opposing views. Including a requirement for issue oriented citizens to be able to reply on air. Philip DeFranco's known practice of approaching a story from all perspectives of thought exemplify this style of journalism. This includes "on air" engagement of the public through his Friday show. Answering the question, "Why the news on TV?". The Fairness Doctrine does not require the existence a of a regular newscast, per se. However, when enforced along with other regulations, a news team makes the most sense compared to the alternatives. While the Fairness Doctrine is still part of FCC rules it no longer enforces this rule as a result of a 1987 legal ruling against it, upheld on appeal in 1989. By 1995 many news programs started to shift away from "hard news" stories. Instead often opting for lighter and happier fair, especially at the end of the newscast. Most abandoning "hard news" or "real news" altogether, within the first decade of this century. Walter Cronkite was the anchor of Walter Cronkite with the News from April 16, 1962 to the start of the CBS Evening News from September 2, 1963 to March of 1981. With his most memorable coverage likely being that of the Vietnam War and his coverage of The Washington Post's Pentagon Papers story. Cronkite's era was well within the window of the Fairness Doctrine's enforcement. What makes Philip DeFranco like Walter Cronkite, may have nothing to do with Cronkite himself. |

| title | Do We Need More Laws? Part 1: Unintended Consequences |
| body | From time to time things change in the world. New laws are needed to meet the challenges of the ever expanding capabilities of technology. From automobiles came traffic laws, vehicle safety regulations, emissions standards, and so on. An ardent libertarian may argue that no such laws are needed. In fact a strong argument for doing away with traffic laws exists. Even if we can't agree on how much regulation is needed, most of us agree that some regulations are necessary. The big question is, when does it all get a little redundant.Take fraud for example: 18 U.S. Code Chapter 47 - FRAUD AND FALSE STATEMENTS 18 U.S. Code Chapter 63 - MAIL FRAUD AND OTHER FRAUD OFFENSES Title 18 contains forty-nine sections across two chapters pertaining to fraud. That includes the repealed section §1008. Why not simply establish a simpler definition of criminal fraud that can be more broadly applied. I mean we all know what is and isn't fraud right? Or do we? Condensing these laws to something much smaller may cause more harm than good. While fraud may seem simple to explain, "wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain." The reality is, that it is not enough. Should children be charged with fraud when they lie about doing their homework. Seems absurd, but where do we draw the line. Can every prosecutor, judge, and policeman be trusted to exercise adequate discretion when up holding the law. Just these two sexual assault cases help demonstrate the problem with absolute trust in the way laws get carried out. Justice may be blind, but that does not justify blind faith in those who seek to enforce them. First as reported by American Broadcasting Corporation. Second as reported by Gwinnett Daily Post. After the collapse of the USSR new governments rose up to take its place. Among them was the Russian Federation where they decided, at the birth of their new nation, to outlaw pornography. But, what is pornography? In the legal sense I mean. It doesn't specify in Russian law. And so, the fight rages on in Russia. The government contends that pornography is illegal, porn distributors contend that images of naked people having sex is not pornography. Both are right, and both are obviously wrong. It is a common, and well known, problem that new laws and regulations can have unintended consequences. An example is the time when Rode Island accidentally legalized prostitution. But there can be even deeper and stranger consequences. Let's return to automobiles for a moment. The odds of surviving an accident increase while wearing a seat belt. However, the odds of being in an accident increase proportionally, leaving mortality rates mostly unchanged. In fact, we seem to have only increased the amount of property damage and traffic delays. Why you might ask? People, wearing seat belts are more confident drivers. Arrogant you might even say. The more secure a driver feels the worse he performs it seems. Organizations such as the Government Accountability Office and even lobbyists dedicate much of their time to tracking down the unintended consequences of proposed legislation. We'll discuss more in part two. Updated: 201704020746 |

| title | Rape Trial Stirs Illegal Immigration Debate - Rockville, Maryland (Apr 1, 2017, 4:16:56 AM) |
| body | This story is relatively well covered elsewhere, and is thus only summarized here. We have included some links to that material at the bottom of this article. Henry Sanchez Milian, aged eighteen and Jose Montano, aged seventeen have been criminally charged, as adults, with the alleged rape-in-the-first-degree of a fourteen-year-old female student in a lavatory at Rockville High School, in addition to other charges. Text messages presented by the defense are claimed to demonstrate that the two suspects were in contact with one another, and that at least one of the suspects was in communication with the alleged victim. The defense claims that the alleged victim was a willing participant in the sexual activity in question. There is no pursuit of statutory rape charges on the basis of age. The age of consent in Maryland is sixteen, but the law permits, persons aged between fourteen and sixteen to consent to sex as long as the other partner is not more than four years older. Henry Sanchez Milian and his father, Adolfo Sanchez Reyes, aged forty-three are known to be from Guatemala and to have entered the United States illegally. According to Montgomery County News Henry Sanchez Milian was already detained and released awaiting trial since August, 2016. This delay is typical in such cases and ICE has issued an immigration detainer for him, following his recent arrest. He will be held at least until ICE conducts an immigration review. Adolfo Sanchez Reyes was captured by ICE approximately one week following the incident. Officials from Montgomery County Public Schools claim to have received numerous phone calls and e-mails, including threats, regarding the incident. Local law enforcement has begun investigating but have no reason to yet conclude that the treats are credible. The school defends its decision to have enrolled him while he awaited his immigration trial. Other coverage: Fox News -Video CNN -Video Montgomery County News Fox 6 (WITI) -CNN Wire Service |
