      "body": "<html>\n<p><img src=\"http://englishon-line.ru/images/img976.jpg\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The tiny Tuscan island of Montecristo, whose mysterious history is filled with saints, monks and pirates, is to be opened up to the public for the first time.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The diamond-shaped island, which is around four square miles in size, was immortalised by Alexandre Dumas in The Count of Monte Cristo as the site of an enormous hidden treasure.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>For almost 40 years, since it became a nature reserve, only scientists and researchers have been allowed within three miles of the island's granite cliffs.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"http://englishon-line.ru/images/977.gif\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The waters were regularly patrolled to make sure the island's population of monk seals, dolphins, tuna and rare birds was not disturbed.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Anyone entering the waters illegally was liable to an instant 150 pounds fine.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>However, the Park Authority for the Tuscan Archipelago has now decided to allow up to 1,000 tourists a year to visit Montecristo, which lies 22 miles south of Elba and 40 miles from the coast of Italy.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Visitors will be allowed from April 1 to July 15 and then from August 31 to the end of October each year. Trips for 2009 have to be booked with the authority by the end of January next year.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Dumas arrived on the island in 1842, in the company of Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>\"It is fantastic and lonely, smelling of thyme and broom,\" he wrote, in a letter.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>He decided to write The Count of Monte Cristo to remind him of the trip.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>His hero, Edmond Dantes, discovers a pirate's treasure on the island after being tipped off by his companion in prison, Abbe Faria.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Dumas described the island at midday: \"Thousands of grasshoppers, hidden in the bushes, chirped with a monotonous and dull note; the leaves of the myrtle and olive trees waved and rustled in the wind.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>\"At every step that Edmond took he disturbed the lizards glittering with hues of emerald; afar off he saw the wild goats bounding from crag to crag.\"</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Dumas was inspired by tales of a pirate's haul, buried in one of the island's grottos. In the 1550s, two pirates, Red Beard and Dragut, sacked the monastery on Montecristo and set up their base.       "body": "<html>\n<p><img src=\"http://englishon-line.ru/images3/50.jpg\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>&nbsp;<em><strong>A vitamin found in meat, fish and milk may help stave off memory loss in old age, a study has suggested.</strong></em>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Older people with lower than average vitamin B12 levels were more than six times more likely to experience brain shrinkage, researchers concluded.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The University of Oxford study, published in the journal Neurology, tested the 107 apparently healthy volunteers over a five-year period.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Some studies suggest two out of five people are deficient in the vitamin.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The problem is even more common among the elderly, and recent moves to supplement bread with folic acid caused concern that this could mask B12 deficiency symptoms in older people.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The Oxford study looked at a group of people between 61 and 87, splitting it into thirds depending on the participants' vitamin B12 levels.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Even the third with the lowest levels were still above a threshold used by some scientists to define vitamin B12 deficiency.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>However, they were still much more likely to show signs of brain shrinkage over the five-year period.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Liver and shellfish</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Professor David Smith, who directs the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Ageing, said he now planned a trial of B vitamins in the elderly to see if taking them could slow brain shrinkage.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>He said: \"This study adds another dimension to our understanding of the effects of B vitamins on the brain - the rate of shrinkage of the brain as we age may be partly influenced by what we eat.\"</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Shrinkage has been strongly linked with a higher risk of developing dementia at a later stage and Rebecca Wood, the chief executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, said further research was needed.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>\"This study suggests that consuming more vitamin B12 through eating meat, fish, fortified cereals or milk as part of a balanced diet might help protect the brain. Liver and shellfish are particularly rich sources of B12.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Vitamin B12 deficiency is a common problem among elderly people in the UK and has been linked to declining memory and dementia.\"</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Dr Susanne Sorensen, from the Alzheimer's Society said: \"Shrinkage is usually associated with the development of dementia.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>As vitamin B may be given as a food supplement, it may be useful to include tests of vitamin B levels in the general assessment of health of older individuals.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>This is another example of why it is crucial for people to lead a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet rich in B vitamins and antioxidants.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The best way to reduce your risk of developing dementia is to keep active, eat a balanced diet, don't smoke and visit your GP to get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked.\"</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n</html>",

      "body": "<html>\n<p><img src=\"http://englishon-line.ru/images/img976.jpg\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The tiny Tuscan island of Montecristo, whose mysterious history is filled with saints, monks and pirates, is to be opened up to the public for the first time.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The diamond-shaped island, which is around four square miles in size, was immortalised by Alexandre Dumas in The Count of Monte Cristo as the site of an enormous hidden treasure.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>For almost 40 years, since it became a nature reserve, only scientists and researchers have been allowed within three miles of the island's granite cliffs.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"http://englishon-line.ru/images/977.gif\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The waters were regularly patrolled to make sure the island's population of monk seals, dolphins, tuna and rare birds was not disturbed.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Anyone entering the waters illegally was liable to an instant 150 pounds fine.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>However, the Park Authority for the Tuscan Archipelago has now decided to allow up to 1,000 tourists a year to visit Montecristo, which lies 22 miles south of Elba and 40 miles from the coast of Italy.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Visitors will be allowed from April 1 to July 15 and then from August 31 to the end of October each year. Trips for 2009 have to be booked with the authority by the end of January next year.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Dumas arrived on the island in 1842, in the company of Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>\"It is fantastic and lonely, smelling of thyme and broom,\" he wrote, in a letter.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>He decided to write The Count of Monte Cristo to remind him of the trip.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>His hero, Edmond Dantes, discovers a pirate's treasure on the island after being tipped off by his companion in prison, Abbe Faria.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Dumas described the island at midday: \"Thousands of grasshoppers, hidden in the bushes, chirped with a monotonous and dull note; the leaves of the myrtle and olive trees waved and rustled in the wind.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>\"At every step that Edmond took he disturbed the lizards glittering with hues of emerald; afar off he saw the wild goats bounding from crag to crag.\"</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Dumas was inspired by tales of a pirate's haul, buried in one of the island's grottos. In the 1550s, two pirates, Red Beard and Dragut, sacked the monastery on Montecristo and set up their base. Dragut, a Turk, is thought to have accumulated vast wealth and hidden his haul somewhere on the island.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>However, no one has found it yet.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The island, which was named by St Mamiliano, the bishop of Palermo, after he fled there in the fifth century, has only been inhabited by a handful of people over the years.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>The Romans named it Mons Jovis, and used the granite from its hills to build houses on Elba.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>According to Roman mythology, Montecristo is one of seven \"jewels\" from the diadem of Venus that fell out when she bathed in the Tyrrhenian sea.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>However, for most Italians, its nickname is \"the island that doesn't exist\", as almost no one has set foot upon it.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>In the 19th century, it was owned by George Watson-Taylor, a rich British art collector.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Would-be tourists will have to sign up for a day of lectures before their visit to Montecristo.</strong> &nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>\"We will organise a lecture on the environment of the island the day before the trip,\" the president of the parks authority, Mario Tozzi, told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>\"Montecristo is an open-air museum and people who go there must understand what treasures they will see.\"</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n</html>",
