| body | Today I wanna take a step back and tell you about a key experience that lead to me overthinking some food choices. I was backpacking with some friends in Indonesia. It was great: beautiful beaches, a lot of sun, fresh fruits, friendly people, small markets, etc. Those markets however posed as eye-opener for me because they don't just sell fresh fruit but also "fresh" meat. It was then, when I realized that it really is nothing else but rotting flesh. Flies were buzzing all around it and I imagined them laying small eggs in it. The meat was exposed to the burning hot sun which did the rest. The smell was horrific and it was at that moment when I decided to not eat anymore of it during my stay in South-East Asia. Gladly that wasn't really hard to do because of all the tasty fruits and they always offer their curries with traditional vegan alternatives like Tofu or Tempeh. I tried those for the first time in my entire life and really enjoyed it. Especially Tempeh is really good and I probably wouldn't have eaten so much of it if I hadn't seen the truth behind the meat. I understand people who only see the packaged product and believe that meat is something delicious and healthy since we get conditioned daily for years through all the advertisement. We don't see what's really going on. All the cruelty and unpleasantries happen behind closed curtains. We only see the finished product, not realizing that an animal had to suffer and die for it. Noting for myself that I feel disgusted of the meat that I eat if it isn't wrapped in plastic, I began to think about why that might be. Breaking down the procedure of its manufacturing I came to the conclusion that this is an horrific industry which I won't support any longer by buying its products. Just watch the short video of a small girl that gets it despite or maybe due to her young age. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Npv2Mpbd3w V BJ |

| body | When changing some of my meals, trying to get rid of animal products, an important step was finding something new that tastes at least as good as the thing I was replacing. I loved eating muesli but I usually used some sort of milk-product (milk + yoghurt or buttermilk) to get the creamy texture I loved so much. Usually some sort of fresh fruit would go along into the bowl for a sweet and fruity taste. While looking for alternatives I came across "porridge" / "oatmeal" which isn't that common where I am from. I really fell in love with it: it's super easy to make, healthy and you can experiment with it in so many ways that it never gets boring eating it. Getting a water boiler really help since all you have to do is heat the water in the boiler, put some oats in a bowl and pour the water over them. Cut some fresh fruits while waiting for the oats the soak up all the water. Add the pieces to the bowl, mix and enjoy. If you want it chocolaty just mix a heaped teaspoonful of cocoa powder under the dry oats before pouring the water over. You can use all kinds of fruits to sweeten it up: dried, fresh, local, exotic, frozen, etc. .. feel free to create your own. Adding all sorts of nuts and seeds and a pinch of cinnamon on top helps to refine the taste. If you try it out let me know which version you made and if you liked it. V BJ PS: A helpful video from Jamie Oliver for those of you who lack the inspiration or kitchen skills. (Just leave out the splash of milk or use a plant-based one and try maple sirup instead of honey) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywkEGKXk2cQ |

| body | I told you last time that in terms of preparing food, becoming vegan wasn't that hard for me since I could cook quite well. The vastly bigger challenge was to implement my choices into everyday life. At that time I attended university and lived in a shared apartment during the week. I did my own shopping and was therefore able to buy and cook only plant-based products. However on the weekends when I came home my mother did the cooking. We had a lot of vegetables, grains, etc. and it wasn't hard for her at all to not cook any meat after I showed her some of the facts I had researched. She was well aware of the risks and the damage to the environment and only buying organic stuff thus far, leaving out meat was just her next step. It was great for me to have found such a supportive and understanding person in my mum. That really helped me out a lot and I imagine my journey would have been way more troublesome otherwise. On the other hand she sometimes cooked something traditional using milk or a dairy product. At that time it wasn't a problem for me. I kinda used the 80/20 rule: thinking that it's not that bad for my body if I eat healthy about 80% of the time and only 20% "unhealthy" meaning animal products or sweets, etc. Additionally we bought all the stuff from our local organic grocery store so I knew that the products are local hence I assumed that they were not that bad for the environment and the animals are raised on lovely farms, enjoying a good life. I told myself that and also believed it in order to justify my moral standpoint. I simply was too lazy to always cook for myself when my mother was in the kitchen a second ago, creating a delicious meal that fulfilled my demands to about 90%. So I squinted my eyes and indulged in her 80% vegan, 100% organic, 100% fresh cooked and 100% delicate meals. You can probably guess where that story ends. I am always looking for optimization and my mum has an open mind. A few months after she told me "I can't imagine being vegan" (btw those are the first words I always hear when someone learns that I am vegan) she became vegan herself. I am really grateful for that because it really simplifies my live a lot! However I can imagine that many new vegans have problems with others when changing there lifestyle. I feel with you since I know that it can be a problematic topic to talk about with loved ones that are not that open for change. The good thing is that we now live in a time where there exist specific books that help you deal with such situations. If you need help articulating your needs, fears, problems, etc. and don't really know how to do so, I can recommend you invest in some helpful literature. "Beyond Beliefs: A Guide to Improving Relationships and Communication for Vegans, Vegetarians and Meat Eaters" by Dr. Melanie Joy is a book that can really help you out. It's great for new Vegans, also to give it to the people they have problems with. It might safe your relationship or furthermore help you improve it or future ones since she leads you on a respectful and compassionate path. Let me know if you have/had similar thoughts after informing yourself and how you deal with others. V BJ PS: Here is a great talk by Dr. Melanie Joy worth watching! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0VrZPBskpg&t=12s |

It's great for new Vegans, also to give it to the people they have problems with. It might safe your relationship or furthermore help you improve it or future ones since she leads you on a respectful and compassionate path.\n\nLet me know if you have/had similar thoughts after informing yourself and how you deal with others.\n\nV\nBJ\n\nPS: Here is a great talk by Dr. Melanie Joy worth watching!\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0VrZPBskpg&t=12s",

| body | As I wrote last time, learning how to cook was very important for me. I think everyone, especially dietician, nutritionists and experts per se, know and agree that highly processed food is in no way healthy for any human. It commonly consists of too much sugar, fat, salt (things we crave for because of our history) and all kinds of harmful, often unresearched additives that we don't need at all. Additionally those foods are stripped of all their nutrients and they therefor lack in fibre, vitamins and minerals. (all the good stuff) If you wanna be healthy (and help the environment and the animals) you should definitely focus on whole foods, preferably from plant sources. Sadly manly people don't know who to cook or prepare those foods in such a manner that it's delicious / tasty. Luckily my mother taught me how to cook and it's really not hard to peel and cut some veggies, cook some whole grains and put all of it on a plate. The difficulty is to prepare it in such a way that it meets your taste. I found out for myself that my taste changed over a longer period of time. I started to like certain things more if after changing my eating habits and sticking to some new foods. However that might take some weeks so it might be hard at the beginning. This is where cooking comes in. If you are "advanced" you can really help yourself during the transition period, since you are able to help yourself by using spices and seasonings, dressings and sauces. The great thing is that you can simple learn all of that by watching some videos or reading a cookbook if you wanna spend some money. I myself spent some time watching all kinds of videos learning a lot of tipps and tricks that really simplified my cooking experience and helped along with the taste of my meals. Just surf through Youtube and I guarantee you that you'll find loads of helpful videos. You might not like every single channel but there are so many out there that you'll discover at least one that appeals to you. For me, cooking is an essential skill for survival (because prepacked, highly refined products slowly kill you) so I can recommend everyone to learn how to do it. Just keep up a curious mind and have the guts to try out new foods (the worst that can happen is that you don't like it) and experiment in your kitchen. V BJ PS: Here's one channel that gave me a lot of inspiration, especially when cooking for friends to show them how delicious vegan food can be! Just try it our for yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRk2YnopKCA&t=674s |

| body | When changing some of my meals, trying to get rid of animal products, an important step was finding something new that tastes at least as good as the thing I was replacing. (Just leave out the splash of milk or use a plant-based one and try maple sirup instead of honey) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywkEGKXk2cQ |

| body | Even though I´m only on my 20´s not so long ago I tried a plant based diet and super regular physical activity and never had I felt better, a while ago I fell of the wagon and not only did my skin and hair change in a bad way but also I started getting sick super often, which never really used to happen to me before. Right now I am trying to become more and more educated in the topic to achieve a healthy, sustainable lifestyle I could carry until old age, hopefully I´ll find a way to achieve this and live life to the fullest. |

| body | Today I wanna focus more on my thoughts which I had when I first dove into the topic of healthy eating. As I told you before that was the first reason for me to look into it. My first wish was to gain muscles but I realized pretty soon that nutrition has an enormous impact on human's healthy! I discovered that there are vegan bodybuilders out there so I assumed that it's no problem to eat a plant-based diet and still make gains. (it's really not!) But what was way more shocking to me was that most chronic diseases are related to our nutrition. Cancer, diabetes, chronic heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure) and Alzheimer's disease to name just a few. My beliefs where put to the test since I got taught for almost 20 years that milk is necessary for strong bones, eggs are a good source for high quality protein and meat is healthy and rich in iron. I went to school for 12 years where they offered us the so called "daily school-milk" that you could order and drink during the break because "it's good for your bones" but never told me anybody that the countries with the highest milk consumption also have the highest osteoporosis rates. On the other hand in Asia where they used to not really consume cow's milk they didn't even know about this disease simply because no one had it. That's what the statistics show and so I began changing my opinions as I tried to educate myself further and further. I started picturing myself in 10, 20 and even 30 years. Seeing all those sick people in documentaries and also in real life, I know I don't wanna end up like them. A few years back I was like: "Who cares about getting old if you don't enjoy your life. It's better to die with 50-60 but live life to the edges!" However after learning more I thought about the possibility of becoming old while staying fit, healthy and clear minded. That just didn't seem like a plausible possibility to me since I always thought that when you get old, you also become sicker and weaker. Clearly that wasn't the case for all. I watched people in there 60s and 70s becoming healthy and clear minded just by changing their diet choices and habits. That impressed me to such an extend that I questioned my old beliefs and instead thought "What if it really is possible to stay fit and strong up until old age?". I was really excited by that new possibility and my motivation drove me to try out new things, change my habits and become more healthy! Out of curiosity the first thing I did was try out a plant-based milk. It's amazing how many different varieties there are: soy, rice, coconut, cashew, almond, hazelnut, rice-coconut, soy-coconut, coconut-cashew, etc. .. you get the point! It's nearly impossible that you don't find one that you like and that's one small and easy step to a better life. Would love to hear if anyone else has / had similar thoughts than me or if that blog motivated you to try out an alternative? Let me know which flavor you like most. V BJ PS: Great information from a great man: Dr. Michael Greger. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rNY7xKyGCQ&t=3902s |

Cancer, diabetes, chronic heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure) and Alzheimer's disease to name just a few.\nMy beliefs where put to the test since I got taught for almost 20 years that milk is necessary for strong bones, eggs are a good source for high quality protein and meat is healthy and rich in iron.\nI went to school for 12 years where they offered us the so called \"daily school-milk\" that you could order and drink during the break because \"it's good for your bones\" but never told me anybody that the countries with the highest milk consumption also have the highest osteoporosis rates. On the other hand in Asia where they used to not really consume cow's milk they didn't even know about this disease simply because no one had it. That's what the statistics show and so I began changing my opinions as I tried to educate myself further and further.\nI started picturing myself in 10, 20 and even 30 years. Seeing all those sick people in documentaries and also in real life, I know I don't wanna end up like them.\nA few years back I was like: \"Who cares about getting old if you don't enjoy your life. It's better to die with 50-60 but live life to the edges!\" However after learning more I thought about the possibility of becoming old while staying fit, healthy and clear minded.\nThat just didn't seem like a plausible possibility to me since I always thought that when you get old, you also become sicker and weaker.\nClearly that wasn't the case for all. I watched people in there 60s and 70s becoming healthy and clear minded just by changing their diet choices and habits. That impressed me to such an extend that I questioned my old beliefs and instead thought \"What if it really is possible to stay fit and strong up until old age?\".\nI was really excited by that new possibility and my motivation drove me to try out new things, change my habits and become more healthy!\nOut of curiosity the first thing I did was try out a plant-based milk. It's amazing how many different varieties there are: soy, rice, coconut, cashew, almond, hazelnut, rice-coconut, soy-coconut, coconut-cashew, etc. .. you get the point! It's nearly impossible that you don't find one that you like and that's one small and easy step to a better life.\n\nWould love to hear if anyone else has / had similar thoughts than me or if that blog motivated you to try out an alternative? Let me know which flavor you like most.\n\nV\nBJ\n\nPS: Great information from a great man: Dr. Michael Greger.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rNY7xKyGCQ&t=3902s",

| body | As I said before I started looking into nutrition because I wanted to optimize the outcome of my training. But after watching several documentaries like the one from my previous blog I realized that so much more depends on our daily food choices. I began to eat and buy my food more consciously. The more information I got, the easier it was for me to become aware and make rational decisions in the store. I mentioned before that it was a process for me. I had to try out a lot of new products in order to change my eating habits. Therefore I learned about loads of new and different food products. Things I have never heard of before or just stuff I didn't really eat regularly. I tried out quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, millet and all kinds of beans and other legumes. I was amazed by the variety and richness of those foods! Luckily I was raised with the words 'You won't know how it tastes before you haven't tried it' so I was open for all those new experiences and I can sincerely encourage you to try one or the other new food from time to time as well. It won't harm you but you will potentially find a new favorite meal! I began to reduce my meat consumption, bought plant-based milk instead of cow's milk and kept informing and educating myself. For me every reduction on animal products was a step in the right direction and with that in mind I wanna leave you with another TED-Talk that might help you see it the same way. | body | In the first few blogs I wrote a lot about mindset and I can recommend you to always work on it and never look at it as you have reached a goal. ("He who stops being better stops being good" - Oliver Cromwell) There is always something to do better! If you have the same mindset you are safe to take the journey all by yourself as I did 2 years ago since it's pretty easy to get all the informations and inputs you need. (the Internet helps a lot here) However the hard part about that is that there is too much information out there and sometimes it's hard to see the truth. That's where I wanna help out! Through providing some inputs and telling my story and point of views I wanna help open minds to reach higher awareness and more appreciation for all life on earth. (and everywhere else of course) A big part at the beginning was gathering information. As I said there is too much information out there. You will find articles, opinions, blogs and even studies that will support your views no matter what you belief. However challenging the status quo and trying to get to the bottom of something with the right techniques clears the fog real quick! Watching documentaries and reflecting on them was a main part at the start. They often challenged beliefs and "truths" I grew up with. Imagine you learn something new that contradicts everything you have heard about it for your whole life. (In my case 18 years, in yours maybe even longer) That's where psychology and / or your mindset plays the biggest role! Some just can't accept new facts. Others open their eyes, overlook there ego and act on the new basis of information. (that's really hard since ones ego is usually pretty big) Just remember that it's ok if you are not one of those you can overthrow all their beliefs overnight. Every step in the right direction is important. Maybe the first step for you is to watch the documentary I attach to this blog instead of streaming Netflix or it's just reflecting about the words you just read, thinking what a douche writes something like that but then realizing that it has some truth to it. As long as you are persistent you will finally get somewhere! Just remember Oliver Cromwell's words! (I really like that quote!) V BJ PS: Here's a great documentary. | body | As mentioned in the last blog I had (& still have) a curious mindset. I always try to look behind the curtain and ask myself the unpleasant questions in order to get to the truth and act rational. So what was the first step that made me look into veganism? I'd love to tell you that something extraordinary happened that changed my life over night but the truth looks quite different! It was a slow transition. I had to discover several aspects over a few months and think through all of it to come up with a believe and lifestyle that satisfies me because it aligns my actions with my moral code. (I'll cover that later on since I think that it's a key fragment!) Back to the beginning: I was 18 years old and just left the army after my basic military service. Finally I was free again to do whatever I wanted and to go wherever I wanted - a great feeling! It was 5 month before I had to attend university and almost everyone else I knew still had some kind of obligations (school, community service (instead of military service), work, etc.). In order to pass time and look good for the coming summer I started to work out. I started to care about my body. How it looks, feels, performs, etc. became more important and of course I wanted to improve all those aspects. As a result of that I also had to look into nutrition and that was when my journey started. V BJ PS: Another great TED-Talk by Dr. Alia Crum concerning the power of your mindset! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tqq66zwa7g&list=PL_ek2WiyoNuTYUNDiRhkqdqaVKf458vjq&index=15 |

| body | If you are puzzled why I wrote about my mindset yesterday - even so I said that I will cover my transition to a vegan lifestyle - let me explain it today: I now think that it takes some specific traits for a person to change and I am not talking about looks or knowledge but things like curiosity and openness - characteristics that are generally regarded as good and desirable. Characteristics that I strive for because I do believe that they are crucial for rational decision making. If you wanna make rational decisions in order to improve your life (any aspect of it) those are the "must have" traits. Luckily you are not born with or without them but you can acquire them through your thoughts and embrace them through your mindset. (I hope it's more clear now why I focus on the mind at the beginning of my blog - it's so important!) What really helped me "learn" about this mindset was a TEDx-Talk I watched on Youtube about 2 years ago. It was from Julia Galef with the title "Why 'scout mindset' is crucial to good judgment" and I can highly recommend you watch it (several times) and do some thinking about it, maybe even embrace parts of it and see how it effects your life! Since I am a big friend of rationalism I strongly relate to the "scout". Nonetheless I want you to know that it takes a lot of thinking and reflecting to get there - just keep positive and never stop trying! V BJ PS: Here's the link for the Talk if you are to lazy to search for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MYEtQ5Zdn8&t=221s&index=1&list=PL_ek2WiyoNuTYUNDiRhkqdqaVKf458vjq |

| body | Nowadays change often gets associated with some kind of negative thinking. However in my opinion change is crucial in our everyday life if we wanna improve! We grow and get better through change. Still many people only see the possible negative sides of change: they don't wanna step out of their comfort zone, not realizing how much they could gain from new experiences. I believe that this focus on the possible negative is the main factor which holds so many people back. Just a small shift in our thinking could help as see the world in such a different way. Over the years I learned to look at it in a different way: I now try to avoid the word 'change' and substitute it with 'improvement' because that's exactly what I wanna get out of it. This focus on the positive really helps me to improve in every aspect since that's the thing I seek. (google 'Law of Attraction' for better understanding) Try it out for yourself if you wanna improve. The next time something doesn't happen as expected or you have the chance to get some change in your life, take the opportunity and step our of your comfort zone with a positive thought in the back of your mind that whatever experience you will make is going to change you and that's a positive thing since you improve through that! Reflect on it afterwards in an objective manner and manly focus on the positive sides of the outcome in order to really improve. V BJ |

| body | Dear Steemit-Community! In this Blog I wanna tell the story of my transition to a vegan lifestyle. What started it? Why do I stick to it? Why is it important to me? What kind of struggle with others and myself did I have / still have? Those are just some questions I'm gonna address in order to encourage you to rethink your choices and grow personally (or help out if you are already vegan and struggle with it). I'll try to keep this Blog as helpful and open-minded as possible and I'd love to hear your thoughts on the topic and carry on one or the other conversation! Please have in mind that english is my second language. So don't hate on my spelling / grammar mistakes (just point it out - I am always trying to improve!) V BJ |
