      "title": "Putting my Children Ahead of my Hobbies",
      "body": "Someone once said words to the effect that no person on their deathbed would ever wish they had spent more time at the office rather than with their family. Those words have bounced around in my head for more than a year but I've seen them play out more clearly in my life recently. I don't work in an office but I'm easily sidetracked but pointless distractions when I could be spending time with my children. As a father, I have only a few limited years to make a purposeful impact in my children's lives. However, my hobbies such as World of Warcraft and watching movies will always be there. I need to live my life in such a way that I don't become that person laying on their deathbed, wishing they'd made better choices relating to their children.\n\nJust yesterday my daughter Laylah who is thirteen months old was playing on the coloured alphabet mat near my computer desk. I was playing World of Warcraft and enthralled in a quest that could have easily waited 'til my babies were in bed later that night. Laylah actually walked up to my chair and placed her hands on the armrest as she looked up at me. I smiled at her and said, 'Hello' but I only really wanted my daughter to play by herself so I could focus on WoW. A few moments later, Laylah sat down on the floor beside my chair and began playing with another toy. I continued with my WoW quest and didn't end up playing with my daughter.\n\nIt was only later that night that I thought about the possible reality that one-day Laylah would be the one too busy for me and I'd be calling or texting without gaining her attention. Throughout my day at work this thought kept flooding into my mind. I also thought of my son Deedrick and how he too would be older soon and no longer chasing after me for attention. I had a moment where I realised more clearly just what special gifts my children are in my life. WoW will always be there waiting patiently for me. However, my children are growing so fast before my eyes. I have to be purposeful in denying some of my legitimate wants at times in order to invest in them. I have no doubt the love I show will be returned in the years to come.\n\nSo today when I got home and opened the door, my daughter came waddling toward me with the biggest smile on her face. I picked Laylah up and kissed her again and again. I told her how much I missed her and loved her. I played with her and laughed as I looked into her big brown eyes. Shortly after this, I had to collect my son from daycare. When I arrived, Deedrick ran up to me and I picked him up for a cuddle. I asked him how his day went, we packed up his gear and then I gave him a little lolly treat when we got to the car. I had to get petrol from the service station and all of the cars made Deedrick nervous. I ended up holding him in my arms and when I tried to put him down, he clamped around my torso tighter so I held him the entire time. I saw how my son views me as his protector and I wanted him to know he'll always have the love and care of his father. \n\nI'm so thankful that I'm seeing how important it is to truly invest in my children. I'd hate to see this once they're too big to care about things like this. They're the ones running toward me right now but that'll change one day. It'll be the love and I show them now that forms a bond that keeps us close as the years pass. At the same time, I feel it's important not to say hobbies are bad and all of a parents free time should be spent with their children. However, I do believe a parent can tell when they're neglecting their children for selfish reasons. It's in those moments that we have to make the right decision and choose to be there for our kids and let our hobby fall by the wayside momentarily. \n\nTherefore, I'd like to encourage any parents who might read this post to reassess how they spend their spare time. Are there afternoons where you're like me and choose to entertain your own hobbies when your children clearly want you instead? Could you make some better decisions which grow into habits that shape the futures of your kids? These thoughts can seem purely philosophical if we let them. However, in truth, they have very real and practical consequences. If we choose the love that demonstrates itself in action then we'll have memories of laughing together, drawing sunsets, baking cookies, riding bikes, singing songs and perhaps even occasionally weeping.       "body": "I thought it would be nice to provide an opportunity for people to learn a little more about my family and I decided a few photos would be helpful. Therefore, over the next few weeks, I'm planning on sharing a few photos of my family. I would have liked to have shared one photo of all of us but unfortunately, I don't have a recent one that looks nice.\n\nBelow is a photo of my daughter Laylah. She's just under 13 months old and is eating a cookie my mum gave her while babysitting. \n\nLaylah has Australian citizenship through me and American citizenship through her mummy. She's 1/4 German and 1/4 Filipino from my side of the family and 1/2 Russian from her mummy. I think she's a beautiful example of how the world can grow closer. We're increasingly becoming a global village and this little cutey is a wonderful example of this.\n\nMy daughter loves playing with her brother Deedrick who is 3 and a half years old. She has her own toys but right now Deedrick's cars and trucks are more interesting than anything else. Laylah is also doing this weird thing at the moment where she pulls food out of her mouth and then puts it back in. This sometimes also involves smearing whatever she's been eating on her face and hair.\n\nMy side of the family think she looks more physically Asian but my wife's side thinks the Russian is increasingly shining through.       "body": "What practical advice could I offer someone who is seeking to discipline themselves for the purpose of pursuing knowledge? I'd like to offer 5 pointers that I'm utilising.\n\nI had a rather enlightening conversation with a co-worker the other day. This exchange is part of the reason why I'm underslept but writing a post when I could be sleeping instead. My co-worker is only nineteen and hasn't spent a great deal of time pursuing study outside of the classroom. Having said that, he's clearly an intelligent individual. The other day he asked me, \"Do you think I could learn German during the course of my lifetime?\" \nI chuckled a little bit and replied, \"You could learn German in a year.\"\n\nMy co-worker seemed quite curious with my reply and asked if I was serious. I responded that I was and then we continued with our work. The thought occurred to me as to why I said a year. Why not less time? Could my co-worker commit himself to rigorous study and attain a level solid of fluency in 3 months? A quick Google search reveals numerous examples of people learning to read, write and converse with new languages in timespans of less than a year. \n\nSo how is this possible? I would argue that a significant factor would be motivation coupled with discipline. An individual doesn't need to be particularly 'gifted' intellectually to excel in a field of interest. I've even heard it argued that motivation can trump intellectual giftedness in certain circumstances. I would tend to agree. What is the use of exceptional talent if it's not harnessed? Would not the limited potential that's purposefully channelled achieve more?\n\nI have a friend who is studying his masters in counselling and loves intellectual pursuits. I like to think of myself as an amateur scholar in a variety of fields. However, this particular friend has often taken on more of a mentor role during our conversations on some topics. A year passed where the two of us had limited contact and during that time I spent much of my free time absorbing knowledge, particularly of a political nature.\n\nWe caught up with one another a week ago and discussed politics. I was somewhat surprised because the conversation quickly became one-sided. My friend was no longer a match for myself in this area. That wasn't to say my goal had been to take on the role of influencer. However, I clearly saw how my disciplined pursuit of knowledge had produced fruit. I'm convinced this can be a reality for anyone.\n\nTherefore, I've written all of that to grind things down to the following practical points that I hope are helpful.\n\n1. Commit to your topic.\nYou must be committed to learning. Anything less than this means you're wasting your time. Enthusiasm isn't enough because it can fade quickly. However, commitment runs deeper and means you continue striving even when it becomes very difficult.\n\n2. Disciplined study.\nIt could be podcasts, books, articles on Vox, Youtube or whatever. However, it must be consistent and disciplined. You must set a time for study, preferably daily. Even 10 minutes a day adds up. The commute to work is a great opportunity for this. Give yourself 6 weeks and you'll form a habit.\n\n3. Practice explaining your topic to others.\nOne of my secondary teachers once said to me, \"You understand something when you can explain it to others.\" Practice mentally explaining your topic to someone else. When you get stumped, make note of where you fell short and study up on that area later.\n\n4. Spar with yourself.\nPlay devils advocate and practice constructively criticising your own position. See if you can find answers to objections someone may have.\n\n5. Accept that there will always be others who know more than you.\nThere will always be gaps in our knowledge of any topic. The goal shouldn't be to reach the top of the ladder so we can look down on all the little people who know less than us. We should desire to be well versed in a topic so we can add value to the community pursuing knowledge in that field. At the same time, we should also recognise that there will always be someone out there possessing more knowledge than us and that's just fine.\n\nI hope this has been helpful. Be disciplined and love the journey. It's awesome to see how your hard work pays off. I'm a firm believer in that old expression, 'The more you know, the further you go.'",

      "body": "Are people of colour being manipulated by far-right organisations that are trying to achieve credibility within mainstream politics? Numerous right-wing groups court support from individuals of ethnic minority backgrounds. However, it would seem that the ultimate goals of those political parties are directly opposed to the ideals one might imagine people of colour to be striving for. Could it be possible that minorities within right-wing white nationalist organisations are little more than shields to deflect accusations of racism at this point in time? Would it be a reasonable prediction that the ethnic minorities supporting these political viewpoints could very well find themselves on the receiving end of discrimination from their supposed 'allies' if they were ever to take power?\n\nBritain First, is a right-wing political party on the fringes of UK politics. A prominent section of their website is entitled 'BRITAIN FIRST AND RACISM - THE TRUTH!' The page informs readers that 'Britain First rejects racial hatred in all its forms.' If this is true, why is Britain First so opposed to non-white European immigration to the UK? Why are only small numbers of non-white immigrants welcome into Britain according to the party's platform? Britain First would respond that they wish for the UK to preserve what they perceive to be its racial and cultural heritage. However, in order to achieve their desired white British future, they have to discriminate against immigrants and do so on a racial basis. Therefore, are the ethnic minorities pictured on Britain First's website merely 'necessary evils' to be tolerated whilst a true agenda of 'Whitopia' is being pursued?\n\nBritain First appears to support the idea of limited non-white skilled immigration. However, one cannot help but wonder how many of Britain First's supporters who are people of colour come from highly educated backgrounds? Are the non-white individuals photographed on their website celebrating a political entity that would actually have them banned from immigration because of their educational background? This strange alliance of ethnic minorities supporting far-right groups is not restricted to the UK.\n\nThe far-right and second most popular political party in Germany, the Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) also accepts membership from persons of colour. The policies of organisations such as Britain First, the AfD, France's National Front and a host of other far-right political parties can only conclude with white ethnocentric states. So why do some people of colour support organisations that could one day strip away their freedoms and the freedoms of their families? One theory put forward is that some people of colour may wish they were of white northern European descent. Therefore, they view support of white nationalist groups as an affirmation that they could be accepted into the fold if their loyalty is sufficiently demonstrated. This 'self-loathing' could be the result of colonial subjugation of numerous people groups of colour. The oppressed are made to feel inferior to their oppressors and could potentially come to see those responsible for their injustice as a source of power to be desired. Whatever the reason, some elements of the far-right certainly have a use for non-white supporters within their ranks at this point in time.\n\nWhat future do people of colour who support far-right political organisations see for themselves and their families? When the Nazi Party took control of Germany they stripped the nation's Jewish population of their rights in progressive waves. It's possible to read bulletins written by Jews for their communities in the 1930s outlining new discriminatory policies enacted by the NSDAP and concluded with the words 'Heil Hitler!'. Were these Jews doing their best to appease their tyrannical government or did they truly believe they were a part of Hitler's Germany? Do people of colour who join far-right nationalist parties with ethnocentric policies believe they are genuinely part of an organisation with their best interests at heart? Many ethnic minority members do believe this and are possibly casting their vote for the very groups that could see them forcibly deported should they ever form a government.\n\nIf a European White Nationalist government ever rose to power and somehow managed to purge its nation of almost all non-white citizens and residents, how could the remaining insignificant fraction of people of colour possibly live without facing discrimination? Government positions would be filled with pure-blood white Europeans. The law would almost certainly no longer permit marriage between whites and non-whites and the educational system would indoctrinate students with white nationalist ideals. Those children would live out their white supremacist worldview as adults. Surely, anyone of colour whom they crossed paths with would automatically become a target for discrimination. Do ethnic minorities who support radical right-wing groups honestly believe they would hold positions of equality within a society dominated by white nationalist politicians?\n\nThere needs to be more discussion in relation to the place of people of colour within the ranks of far-right organisations. Many such groups do openly reject any affiliation with non-white people. However, there are political parties in many nations that openly court ethnic minorities in an attempt to hide their radical white nationalist agendas. People of colour who believe they have a future in Whitopia need only look in the mirror to see how deluded they truly are. It is the responsibility of those who are educating themselves on this topic to sound the alarm for their friends of colour and warn them to avoid the far-right. White supremacists like Richard Spencer sum up the position of the entire white nationalist movement when they declare there is no future for people of colour within 'their' nations.",
