      "body": "I was always made fun of for not having television growing up and truthfully, it never really bothered me. I was smart enough to realize and understand that, what I was doing was not something wrong. I was actually quite flattered when someone says that I don't have TV, hence made me absolutely clueless on what is happening in the media.\n\nBecause let us all be real, mostly (not all) what they portray on TV is absolutely garbage. At least here it is.\n\nI live in Malaysia and people at the time revolved around television and social media of course but I'll get back on how that is also sad, so I would understand why me growing up without TV was so confusing and sounded so odd to most people. It does not help when I top all of it with my very nonchalant reaction. Trust me, where I went to school, anything that was not done within the majority becomes a matter to degrade. So, I wouldn't take anything \"harsh\" to heart, because really I was fine.\n\nWhen I was around 13 and 14, I was always occupied my time with facebook because as a growing teen, I had to interact to people and socialize. No, I was not one of those teens that preferred to stay at home and read books all day rather than talk to girls my age, I was normal (too normal). Although I did loved books and still do, the only problem was, there was no one that could relate to me, so fitting in was hard.\n\nWanting to fit in so hard has led me to dive in the various contents of television whenever I went for a sleepover at a friend's house or when my friends talk about the latest episode of last night's drama. So in a way, I had never truly grew up without TV. The correct phrase is, me and my family didn't have a TV of our own,but I went and hung out with it anyways.\n\nI was so occupied with wanting to seem 'cool' and informed that I neglect the toxic and degrading messages the content my friends was watching at the time. The saddest part was, It took me years to realize that the television industry had been picking me apart in the worst way as a teen girl growing up.\n\nBut is it really television to blame? I mean, I must sound bitter for blaming it all on the television industry. I could just take on my own responsibility and not watch it. But could you really do that? Just let it be? Just let it happen? On and on until you have children of your own? Why does it matter? It's entertainment after all.\n\nIt matters when so many, not only girls, but teen boys, grow up to accept the norm of their society. The norm of their society includes, \"boys will be boys\", self hate translates to being humble, being confident means your arrogant, self love is a sign of a woman's journey to \"bitchyville\", that it is okay to risk it all for a man just because you are a noble woman, that it is normal for a girl to go through such harsh experiences just because she's a girl and there is no use of changing anything, that it is okay and considered manly for men to punch each other for a single woman or a single position, that it is considered girly to cry as a man, that being less successful than your spouse makes you less of a man and more degrading things that we put upon ourselves as a kid growing up.\n\nBut if you are conscious enough and aware of what television can do to your brain and how you think, it would probably be less of a problem,right?\n\nWell that is unlikely to happen, because as a child, your brain develops with whatever information it has around you and if misleading television content was the only thing around to feed on, then misleading television content it is. Children, sadly, don't listen, they imitate what you do. For example, if a mother was to say that her daughter can't stay on the television for too long,but she herself as a mother does not pry herself from the television, that request she made towards her daughter would probably be ignored and thrown out the window. But if the mother, was, to say grabbed a book instead of watching television all day, the daughter would probably do the same. It depends on what age she is really.\n\nIf only we can change that.\n\nBut how? Not having tv at all?\n\nWell, it is not a bad idea. A lot of people would expect children that grow up without tv become less informed and more reserved. But with the era of technology and media,advancing at such a fast and overwhelming rate, it is safe to say that, leaving television does not sound that bad after all.\n\nIt is true when people say that, the internet is a much more complex and dangerous place, compared to television. But aren't all the things in the world complex and not easy to comprehend?\n\nIn my humble opinion,the internet does not filter and if we were to find the truth, we could probably get our hands on it.\n\nTelevision however, is a whole different story.",

      "body": "Malaysian education has never failed in giving their students and younger generations an education about the basic needs of life. A school subject we call \"Kemahiran Hidup\" which literally translates to \"living skills\". \n\nBut seriously, it's a school subject. \n\nThe first three things that we learned during form 1 until form 3 are the three basic needs of life. \nWhich is: \n1. Food\n2.Clothes\n3. Shelter\n\nI think we all know and understand why food is up there, and clothes are the fundamental rights of the human race. \n\nAnd last but not least, shelter. \n\nNo, i'm not going to argue about why Shelter isn't even a need and we can all become backpackers. I'm here to argue about why is shelter a need?And not something that people need to be satisfied about?\n\nNeed and satisfaction are two different things.\n\nWhen you NEED a house, you could not care less about the small and crowded space it offers.\n\"Make it small as a box for all I care!\" You say.\nWhen you want to be SATISFIED, space and comfort are very fundamental when finding a house. A fair amount of rooms, a place where you can actually spread your legs and maybe do a little yoga(no?okay). \n\nMalaysia is living in an era, with the mentality that they need a roof over their heads, it doesn't matter how comfortable it is,as long as they have a place to stay, which to me, is a problem. \n\nIt's not just a problem with people living in poverty or people who have lower income between RM 900 a month and RM 1000 a month. And I did find one that was reasonable enough, I always do. \n\nIt was an apartment on a high floor, one of the highest actually. \n\nIt is said that the higher the floor goes, the higher the cost gets. It may be because of the better ventilation, wind current and daylight compared to lower floors. \n\nBut can a 753 sqft apartment cost that much money? And for what? Because it's fully furnished? \n\nI don't want to label this studio as ridiculous, because as crazy as it sounds, there would still be people who are willing to pay for it. For example, people with money. \n\nActual money. \n\nBut what about students? Middle class people? People who are not living in poverty  but still don't have a whole lot of money. Don't they get to escape the stress and the constant anxiety of buying  a house or renting one? Forget about paying for a house. What about clothes? Taxes? Student Loans? All of this is money, where are they ever going to  fit in a time for themselves to get self care? \n\nThis is normal, people would say, you would say. People worry about paying all the time. But I thought shelter was one of the three basic needs in life. What happened? \n\nSchool never taught us that being rich was sort off the only way we can get a decent and comfortable living. Not to mention taxes and the amount of bills you have to pay. Mostly people with families look for these sort of houses, but with that kind off space? It doesn't really offer much.\n\nThe fact that a family needs to stay in a house because they need it and not because their satisfied with it, is sad. And says a lot about the people who sell these houses to them. \n\nThe blame cannot be put entirely on the people who set these prices as they are also people who need to pay bills and taxes. It also does not help, that the country's economy is not being at the best state.  But it's also hard to imagine myself having a house and shelter that I am not fully satisfied with, considering the options, I have now. \n\nIt may be a small and less important concern, but it definitely is something people should think about. \n\nI saw one article about \"houses to buy\" in a newspaper the other day. The journalist who wrote that article stated that there is hope in Malaysia when it comes to looking for a home. Up to that point I was thrilled to hear such exciting news, but my thoughts died when I read the next words that came.\n\n\"The condition of finding houses in Malaysia has not yet become like China, but definitely near, nothing to worry\" \n\nWhat nonsense. \n\nApparently we have to actually wait to become China in order to avoid being China. Action has to be taken at any moment and there is no harm in starting now.",
