| title | The Godfather Coda: A Magnum Opus to end the Corleone story |
| body | .jpg) When I watched the Godfather III movie, it was part of the binge of the trilogy. Comparing the two movies with the final one, I felt something lacking. It was a good movie, but it was not a Godfather movie. Many lament the lackluster performances of the cast, or how it lacked the subtle touch of the first two movies. Some even said it was a mediocre ending to an otherwise perfect series. But I just recently heard that Francis Ford Coppola returned to the world of the Corleones, to recreate the finale into the masterpiece it should have been. And it was. It regained the power of the first two movies, the subtlety of the action, and the muted performances of the actors. Now we can see the contrast between the brash and overly vocal Andy Garcia playing Sonny Corleone's bastard son and the depth and intensity of Pacino's Corleone. The performances that were found lackluster in the original is almost negligible with the reshots. And as a controversial aside, when Winona Ryder bowed out as Mary Corleone, I believe it was the right choice. Not because she didn't act well, but it gave too much spotlight in a character that wasn't at the center of the story. She is more a side character acting as part of the Sonny arc, but it would have forced the storyline more in that direction than in the eventual death of Michael Corleone (I will not spoil the details). The best part of the Godfather Coda, apparent from the meticulous crafting to be faithful to the source, is that the movie has regained gravitas. You can see it in the intensity and power of the major players, and you can see how the plot moves with them. The Godfather Coda is the masterpiece conclusion to a masterpiece trilogy, worthy of the Corleone Legacy |

| title | You can lose weight without exercise (But do it anyway) |
| body | A year ago, I was entranced by the prospect of getting thin without much work. The founder of a fitness app revealed the secret ingredient or food that when eaten would drastically speed up our metabolism. While I was reluctant about paying for the regimen he offered, I did took some time to research the food and carb cycling which he stressed as well. But a family member demonstrated that without the need of such complicated methods of dieting and exercise, he can dramatically lose weight. And by dramatically I mean 40 pounds dramatically. There is no exact science to getting thin, and he stumbled upon it through his own research. I did see some results myself when I began to (partly) follow his routine. Here's the kicker: I lost weight without exercise. Let me explain how. We based our own regimen on weight loss on the cycle of calorie burning of the body. Based on your age, height, current weight, the body regularly burns a certain number of calories. If you calculate that, then the other half of the trick is to eat only a sum calorie of less than that much. That entails counting calories every food… Googling the name of the food then the acceptable or official calorie count. Then setting a total calorie count below the regular calories burned per cycle. There's also a lot of research in finding out your regular calorie burn. What we do is we have separate apps… my relative uses Samsung Health and I use MyFitnessPal. The point is not the app. The point is finding the app for you that will help automate the calories you need to burn based on how much you want to lose and on how much you regularly burn. Now I said you can get thin without exercising. Now I advise you to exercise anyway. Why? Apart from building your body strength and all the physical rewards achieved from such effort (including dopamine), exercise makes the regimen easier. You can thin down faster, as exercising and dieting both contribute to burning calories. More importantly, it eases the pressure of eating less. You have no idea how many snacks that I once regularly ate I now look at with regretful aversion, because it would take me beyond my target calories. I reserve most of my calories for snacks when hunger sets in. I've learned to allocate but I've lost so much. On the other hand, my relative simply eats the food… then exercises to offset the calories gained. It means you can eat, just as long as you're willing to work for it. Because I choose not to, dieting becomes harder, I miss out on past delights, and I even exceed my target while obstinately refusing to burn it off. Exercise actually makes it easier to eat. Not even the hard crunches. A simple 30 minute walk was measured in the 100+ calories. Again, you can use any app to measure how many calories are burned with each exercise, though I recommend the one that can integrate that and the calories of food you eat. And no pressure on making hard crunches. I dance for a few minutes, burning 30-60 calories. My relative does shadow boxing and martial arts stances, and he burns 200+. Even just walking the mall can be clocked as exercise just as long as you keep moving. That's it really. The secret to losing forty pounds. No pizazz. No glam. And one last thing: you dramatically lose weight but not overnight. In fact, it takes months of frustration in not seeing any effect until you do see it suddenly. Once you get into the system of counting calories it becomes second nature… and you even become comfortable with your foods that you know you can eat. (Bear in mind that I am only skimming the surface of healthy eating… this is only the layman's weight loss, but theres a lot more to it than that) |

And by dramatically I mean 40 pounds dramatically. \n\nThere is no exact science to getting thin, and he stumbled upon it through his own research. I did see some results myself when I began to (partly) follow his routine. \n\nHere's the kicker: I lost weight without exercise. Let me explain how. \n\nWe based our own regimen on weight loss on the cycle of calorie burning of the body. Based on your age, height, current weight, the body regularly burns a certain number of calories. If you calculate that, then the other half of the trick is to eat only a sum calorie of less than that much. \n\nThat entails counting calories every food… Googling the name of the food then the acceptable or official calorie count. Then setting a total calorie count below the regular calories burned per cycle. \n\nThere's also a lot of research in finding out your regular calorie burn. What we do is we have separate apps… my relative uses Samsung Health and I use MyFitnessPal. The point is not the app. The point is finding the app for you that will help automate the calories you need to burn based on how much you want to lose and on how much you regularly burn. \n \nNow I said you can get thin without exercising. Now I advise you to exercise anyway. \n\nWhy? Apart from building your body strength and all the physical rewards achieved from such effort (including dopamine), exercise makes the regimen easier. You can thin down faster, as exercising and dieting both contribute to burning calories. More importantly, it eases the pressure of eating less. \n\nYou have no idea how many snacks that I once regularly ate I now look at with regretful aversion, because it would take me beyond my target calories. I reserve most of my calories for snacks when hunger sets in. I've learned to allocate but I've lost so much. \n\nOn the other hand, my relative simply eats the food… then exercises to offset the calories gained. It means you can eat, just as long as you're willing to work for it. Because I choose not to, dieting becomes harder, I miss out on past delights, and I even exceed my target while obstinately refusing to burn it off. \n\nExercise actually makes it easier to eat. \n\nThat's it really. The secret to losing forty pounds. No pizazz. No glam. And one last thing: you dramatically lose weight but not overnight. In fact, it takes months of frustration in not seeing any effect until you do see it suddenly. \n\nOnce you get into the system of counting calories it becomes second nature… and you even become comfortable with your foods that you know you can eat. \n\n(Bear in mind that I am only skimming the surface of healthy eating… this is only the layman's weight loss, but theres a lot more to it than that)",

| title | Marble Cards and The Ship of Theseus: a Philosophical Study into NFTs |
| body | We've heard about this new craze.. Digitizing art, creating a tokenized version of a piece of history, selling the roster of NBA players for cryptocurrency. Suddenly the by-word is NFT. Non fungible token. The latest blockchain wonder. To be truthful, I didn't have much knowledge of NFT until recently, and I thought that they were tradeable goods with valuation at cryptocurrency. Now you're wondering: doesn't this article belong elsewhere? This is blockchain, this is cryptocurrency. Truth is, at the heart of the NFT lies a more fundamental issue and a history going as far back as the Renaissance, or older. The great literary and visual artists like Michelangelo and Petrarch didn't subsist on the sale of their art. Each handcrafted work was a masterpiece and should be valued at a high price, but such as the reality of the times that the artist was willing to receive less to be paid for basic necessities. But a few ducats worth of paintings will not feed an artist. He either finds work outside his art, or find a wealthy patron. Michelangelo was commissioned by Rome for his art. Noblemen commissioned artists for their work. This, then, is how artists subsisted… through the patronage of the wealthy few. And it was a symbol of prestige to own such art work as it indicated you as a man of status. So is the NFT such an artwork? It is true that many NFTs are works of art and valued at high crypto price, but it does a disservice to narrow NFTs to such a definition. A concrete definition of such a concept needs an examination to one such NFT collection: Marble Cards. The idea is simple… every domain in the Internet has a page, and each page could be potentially minted as a card with its own unique background design. Only a few domains are available yet for minting, but the idea behind it is ambitious: curating the Internet. Art that is available to the layman, to be crafted at his own leisure. There are, however, ethical considerations to ponder. While a page can be curated as a work of art, what if that page contains the Mona Lisa? Or a gallery of art works by an artist? Does the curated page belong to whoever curated it? And what of the art within? And what of a page that itself curates art? Does it become a curation of a curation? We ever so slightly throw the car of our thoughts completely off road and to the latest episode of the series Wandavision. In one scene we are presented with two Visions: one reconstructed by the government and the other reconstructed from Wanda's memories. Which one was the real Vision? One posits the thought experiment of the Ship of Theseus. Through the years a ship's planks are replaced to maintain it. When all of the planks are replaced, is it still the same ship? An addendum to this is if the planks are reassembled to make another ship, is that the true ship? There is no real answer to this thought experiment, but in the episode they both agree that they are both not Vision, and both are Vision. We arrive then to the point of our discussion: is the Marble Card that reconstitute the art work therefore the art work or is it not? And if it is, is it therefore owned by its original creator? We may arrive at the same conclusion which will hold us for now: yes, it is the same art work, but no, it is a different entity. How then can we apply this to the identity of the NFT? Yes, artworks are sold as NFTs, but objects and maps and plots of lands and the NBA roster of players are not represented by the NFTs… They are, and they are not. A ship reconstituted has value of that ship, but is a different entity altogether. The twist is that after the NFT is immortalized in the blockchain, it is destroyed altogether. The ship is destroyed, so is the ship of the blockchain the true ship? This is how I shall send the thought experiment that is created by the NFT. The novel idea of Marble Cards is apparently not to curate the art, but the valuation of the art. Or perhaps, like a reconstitution, it is both the art and it is not. For those who are interested and want to dive into the waters of this world, you can try to go to https://marble.cards |
