      "body": "There is a certain type of nuance to social media posts these days, and since the sun rose on the Internet, those who seemed to feel that their voices were not being heard have taken to the digital equivalent of shouting from the rooftops. While I am all for free speech, I realize that there is a certain level of responsibility that comes with it, beginning with the boundaries concerning *rights*. Yes, one has the *right* to say what one so chooses, but the rights of one person end where the rights of a second person begin.\n\nThis also begs the presumption that those who are using their voices are living in a society which does not stifle said rights.\n\nThe *problem* with all of this voicing of opinions is that there is the notion that there is no such thing as a wrong opinion. Currently, those of us who live in the United States of America, or who are brave enough to follow the dumpster fire that is the socio-political structure of the USA, are bearing witness to the denial of facts in favor of feelings. Believe me, there are times when I wish that what I felt was the truth and that what was occurring or cemented in reality was the fiction. Case in point, this “lovely” meme I skimmed from the algae-tainted pool of Facebook:\n\n![120553058_10101772468855289_5227926887757496326_o.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmd5yPT9SQSs5X9ViHYB62C3xfuqYf1sqX5JhGEjkG2Dni/120553058_10101772468855289_5227926887757496326_o.jpg)\n\nI have been holding my tongue as it were lately, and I find this to be evident from the lack of posts here on SteemIt. It has been close to 8 months, and, frankly, I have avoided the platform. This is not due to any disrespect, but because by the time that I arrive home from work and catch up on correspondence, physical and electronic, I’ve stomached all that I can regarding politics and the COVID-19 pandemic. And as that is the bulk of what is going on, I felt that adding my voice to mix about, well, literally nothing else, would be heaping rancid dung atop rotting dung.\n\nWhen I saw this meme, I felt the smoldering ember of my self-silenced voice bloom into a small and controllable fire. You see, I am completely and utterly dismayed at people who are not proficient or professionals in a given field who weigh in on issues concerning those fields. So I am going to begin with picking apart the content of the meme. Starting with the “mitochondria” part, the high schooler then asks something that is actually unrelated to mitochondria; hell, they are not even in the same subject field. The response of the Pythagorean Theorem is a ridiculous notion, because either a science/biology teacher would not be permitted to engage in a subject matter outside of the curriculum, so let’s just say that the student then asked the math teacher; again, a ridiculous parody of a response.\n\nBearing in mind that sometimes students ask questions that are not grade-level appropriate (i.e., inquiring about calculus in 4th grade while learning about fractions)..\nBearing in mind that sometimes students ask questions that, while legitimate, are not within the scope of the day’s lesson plans (to which teachers are held strictly).\nBearing in mind that sometimes students ask questions that are designed just to distract and subvert because, let’s face it, kids will be kids.\n\nMoving on to the 4th frame: I can understand a student in a Life Skills program needing to know how to schedule a doctor’s appointment. However, there are online apps and websites these days, but the inability for a student who is mainstream and does not require special accommodations to pick up a phone and place a call and make an appointment shows that the home life is failing the child; and the Civics-based response of, “ChRiStOpHeR cOlUmBuS sAiLeD tHe OcEaN BlUe In 1492!!!!” is, again, a ludicrous response.\n\nThe response that I left on the original post on social media was as follows:\n“To be fair... Taxes can be super-complicated, and there are tax attorneys and accountants for a reason, the laws change so much and so frequently. But it is a matter of reading directions, estimating, and using addition and subtraction... and doctor's appointments? It is a phone call and a schedule. That's from the parents.\n\n“I've heard the same thing about financial math versus Algebra 2. Well, considering that Interest Formulae are taught in Algebra 2, and balancing a checkbook is addition/subtraction with 2 decimal places (that's 2nd or 3rd grade math, if I recall correctly), then yes, this is all taught in high school and earlier.”\n\nGranted, for the sake of simplicity, I did not get into the whole notion of varying family structures (e.g., parents versus guardians versus *responsible adult party/parties*), but I am hoping that the message is clear, that there needs to be some accountability at home, that children learn by example, and that the schools are not responsible for teaching *EVERYTHING*. It is impossible for that to happen, especially with the demands that are placed on teachers on a regular basis.\n\nI had a particular experience in one school district back in 2006. As I was planning my lessons, I was told to utilize cross-curricular aspects of mathematics, particularly with regards to the Humanities. While math blends in rather seamlessly with physics and chemistry, things get a bit… squiffy, shall we say, when dealing with the less-pure sciences (XKCD once again!), and not well when trying to match up with literature. However, history and math tend to find some common ground - not enough to get together and form a happy family, but enough that they can hang out together by the grill at a backyard BBQ. So I got some feedback from a history teacher friend from down the hall and incorporated some history into my lesson.\n\nI was chastised by the administration, as that was clearly a *BAD MOVE* since I was not certified or qualified to teach history, and I was so directed to stick to mathematics, as that was my area of instruction. This is despite the fact that I was teaching about Pythagoras and right triangles and the fact that Pythagoras arrived at his conclusion without using actual numbers, by drawing in the ashes of a fireplace or in the dirt with a stick. Nope, just stick with the numbers and the shapes, phoenix32.\n\nOK.\n\nNow, this is where it gets a bit weird, and I admittedly get a bit belligerent. Grab your popcorn, because this becomes a real trainwreck.\n\nA month later, we (the entire staff) receive the instructions for the community-building program called “Character Counts” in our mailboxes with directions to teach this lesson during one of our instructional periods. Well. This is not mathematics; this is not in my lesson plan for the day; I am not certified in this area.\n\nI’m sure you can see where this is going…\n\nSo I argued the point of having to teach it, also with the idea that the values and ethics of my students’ beliefs might have differed from those in the “Character Counts” material, so how do I address that? Furthermore, how can I teach something from “Character Counts” if it is not aligned with my own beliefs? What if I find the code of conduct from that packet to be lacking in some way, or perhaps I am not rigorous enough for the program? What , further, are the philosophical implications of a system of morals and ethics - who guides it? Is it a deity in which I have placed my faith, Jesus Christ as the Son of God, or is it something mythological, or even a simple system such as Kant and the categorical imperatives?\n\nMy point here is that teachers are given contradictory sets of directives. Teachers are under the gun from administrators, some of whom have not actually been in the classroom for over a decade (and boy, have there been some changes in the last 10 years since I left the classroom). Teachers are being told by politicians and lobbyists how to teach and how they should be evaluated based on student performance, although many of these folks have not stepped foot in a classroom since the Nixon Administration. None of this takes into account the individual circumstances of each student, rosters that are filled to overflowing, inadequate resources, and the *home lives of the students themselves* which can sometimes be harrowing or less-than-ideal. I mean, I have a student get to my classroom at 9:30 am and he is hungry because he has not had breakfast, but somehow that is my responsibility…? Or the student is sleeping in a Math Skills class that he could be teaching because he is Honors Algebra 2 level, but the school placed him in Geometry again (despite the fact that he passed with flying colors the first time) and tossed him into remedial math just to pad some numbers, and he is angry about that *and* not to mention that his home life is a war zone…?\n\nWhile I maintain that there is no *real* thing as a *wrong* opinion, I am of the mindset that an opinion should be malleable when facts are presented, and that opinions should not be voiced without real facts.\nFACT: Teachers are being dictated to by people with no background in education.\nFACT: Teachers are being given contradictory sets of directives.\nFACT: Teachers are actively combating cultural and societal concerns such as home and family life, poverty, abuse, bullying, and more.\nFACT: Teachers are human beings with flaws and faults of their own.\nFACT: The system has been known to fail, not only students who slip through the cracks, but sometimes in an outright manner.\nFACT: The rights of teachers have been shoved ~~into a ditch and executed~~ aside in favor of free reign for the students.\nFACT: Many school districts are so frightened of lawsuits and bad press that they kowtow to the parents and students.\n\nSo things like that meme, while opinion-based, are demonstrative of an opinion that really needs to be better informed. The facts remain that teachers truly do their best to prepare students for the real world. The same argument can be applied to anyone who gripes about the dress codes that are not usually enforced in schools. Many people have used the arguments against dress code - a teenage girl’s bare shoulders or shirt skirt should not be distracting a teenage boy and enticing him with sexual thoughts, and similar arguments. And granted, the conservative adult in me does not view teenagers in that regard, and to be further fair, I have no desire to see a teenage boy’s undergarments when they are sagging their pants.\n\nThe point of the dress code is less about sexualization or denial of such as it is a practice of what is appropriate for the workplace. Companies and corporations all have dress codes. School districts have dress codes for employees. Minimum wage jobs - McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, KFC, WalMart - all have dress codes. So yes, there is the whole “freedom of expression through attire” argument, but I have worked in three different schools districts that have successfully implemented a dress code and students are sent home and not permitted into classes if they are out of uniform. I have seen the same thing happen in the workplace when a colleague has shown up out of uniform. And not for nothing, but the school athletics teams all have uniforms, and not a single student gripes about them! So what is the issue?\n\ntl;dr - A lot of people who are not teachers and have no background in teaching offer a lot of opinions that are not based on any facts but rather on fiction that fits their narratives; opinions are not really well-informed and formulated with a basis in fact; truth is not subjective or relative in many cases. Schools prepare students for the future, whether people realize it or not, and memes stating otherwise are annoying, insulting, and ignorant.",

      "body": "I had the fortunate circumstances to connect with Aunt Kat. When I worked in the school district back home, I got to meet her and know her better. She and my mother have some good history as teacher union reps who were fighting the good fight against a tyrannical superintendent back in the day, and they have remained friendly to this day. Aunt Kat's classroom was down the hall from my office, and visiting her classroom was always a joy. She was old-school, and she would have the students stand and greet a visitor to her classroom with respect.\n\nI have not spoken to her, or anyone really, for some time, and I decided that I would take advantage of my drive home to pop in my headset and give her a call. Retirement has been good for her, and I think that she is honestly far busier now than when she was teaching, although it is a different kind of busy. She was an art teacher, and then eventually the \"Emperor Superintendent\" moved her to teach 5th grade in a spiteful move.\n![uncle_palpy.gif](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcVgynMyufg1yXHXTwqaj4QBsFg1gjr5G46xwCd6uD3sT/uncle_palpy.gif)\nWhile that hindered her time doing art, it did not dampen her teaching spirit or her artistic heart. Years before I moved to the seminary, she had given me a couple of cat illustrations that she had drawn, and I am honored to have some Aunt Kat originals in my collection of things.\n\nWe were talking last evening as I left work, and she was telling me of this group that she helped to found, \"Random Acts of Art.\" I was intrigued, naturally, as it was something important to someone who I love and respect. When she invited me to join her group, I balked for a moment, as painting and drawing are not really my creative avenues. But when she told me that writers and musicians were welcomed as well, and that \"art\" meant anything that was creative and constructive, I was instantly on-board.\n\nYou can scroll through and find my creative writing and the (as of now) solo poem that I have posted here. I have some musical credits to my name, being a saxophonist for close to 30 years, and having picked up the clarinet and flute somewhere along the way (although it has been decades since I have played anything but the alto sax).\n![sax9.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbonWMhpfV5oipj5r9RQ9j7kNBykVJZa179LeTJ59a9g6/sax9.jpg)\nTenor sax was my jam, I loved that even more than alto, and I also played baritone sax. So it is not to say that I cannot create at all, just that creating within the confines of the media of paint and pencils is not what I would call my strength.\n\nThat being said, there is a display and I am happy to say that I will be checking it out this coming Monday night, and then joining \"RAoA\" for the 2020 meetings. One of the problems that I faced was the lack of inspiration, due in part to my depression, and also due to the fact that an artist needs to surround him/herself with other artists at times. There is a certain sharing of ideas and concepts, an atmosphere that comes from being around like-minded folks. I like to be around painters, like Aunt Kat, and sculptors, to check out sketch books, and to listen to other musicians play their songs or their interpretations on old standards. That sort of thing allows for me to be happy for them; there is no jealousy, but just pure admiration and joy at the fact that they have *created*, and that is just something that is truly awesome.\n\nI am wicked stoked to get to work with, alongside, and among talented local artists. I've needed something like this, and I cannot wait to see what everyone can create.",

      "body": "It has been one hot month or so since my last post, and I have to say that I have been rather busy. A good number of things happened, in no particular order or sequence that would be consequential -- the Christmas holiday, family gatherings that go with Christmas and whatnot, a bit of a head cold, and *moving*.\n\nI have moved so much in 2019. I have literally been all over the map of the heavily-debated Central Jersey area, South Jersey, and Philadelphia.\n- January: Parish “A” to Seminary\n- April: Seminary to Parish “A”\n- April: Parish “A” to Seminary\n- May: Seminary to Parish “A”\n- June: Parish “A” to Seminary\n- June: Seminary to Parish “A” (for less than 24 hours)\n- June: Parish “A” to Parish “B”\n- July: Parish “B” to Retreat House\n- July: Retreat House to Parish “A”\n- July/August: Parish “A” to Parish “C” (The Big Move)\n- August: Parish “C” to Seminary\n- December: Seminary to NJ\n\nAnd I still have stuff in storage that I will need to relocate to a storage unit, I have the bare minimum with a few exceptions with me, and I am fairly mobile these days.\n\nI know I ranted before about having to move (https://steemit.com/life/@phoenix32/the-summer-of-many-moves), and I was rather grateful when I landed in Parish “C” with not only a roof over my head, but with even better accommodations than I had in Parish “A” or even Parish “B”. Suffice to say that I was quite content, and it was great that I didn’t have to really worry too much about my stuff disappearing or unwanted 4- and 6-legged visitors or having to move again until the end of the semester in December.\n\nBoy, have the last few months proven to be anything but predictable.\n\nLet’s start with what I am calling the “Bombshell of October ‘19”. Taking time away from the seminary was not my first choice, and while I was initially upset, shocked, and frightened by the idea of it, and I was certainly not enamored with my sabbatical being involuntary, I rapidly became OK with the idea and even embraced it. I could feel the weight being lifted off my shoulders, and the inclinations and impulses that had become damn near difficult to govern were almost non-existent.\n\nThe pressure was off.\nPlease allow me to clarify something here for a moment. The “Bombshell of October ‘19” was not the fact that I was told to take time off from Formation and studies -- no, frankly, that was a good call and some good thinking on the part of the seminary. The “Bombshell” is that my home diocese did nothing, has done nothing, and will continue to do nothing to assist me aside from the bare minimum. I have been cut off and I am *persona non grata* for at least two years. No one has called to check in on me at all. Which is not to say that no one called me -- the director’s secretary called me about sending me a donation check that had come in my name. However, by the time it would have reached me at the seminary, I would have been long gone and *no longer a seminarian*. As it stood, I had her send it to my parents’ house while I established my mailing address, and the day it arrived was my absolute very last day as a seminarian for this diocese.\n\nBut not one phone call, not one text, not one email from the director himself.\n\nAnd it isn’t like I am unreachable… There are 2 phone numbers that handle voice and text, 2 email addresses, a mailing address and landline at my parents’ house, and hell, I even have iMessage since I run some Apple hardware. One of the phone numbers is linked to all of my devices, so if one was to call me, *every single computer, tablet, and phone* would light up like the gorram 4th of July to let me know that I, indeed, have an incoming call or text message.\n\nBeing honest and fair, I highly doubt that I would take the director’s call right now. Oh, yes, the “Bombshell” and the subsequent “Fallout of ‘19”. The Fallout is not as bad as I thought it was going to be. My siblings and the sibs-in-law have all been supportive and caring, my parents have been understanding, and I have a job -- not just something lined up or in the works, but I have actually been on the job for 4 solid days. I’m back in the saddle, doing IT work, and loving it. I am flexing old muscles that I have not used for a while. And gorram, does it feel good.\n\nNot that seminary life and the academics did not feel good, mind you. I managed to complete my semester this Fall to the satisfaction -- and a bit of a pleasant surprise -- of the faculty. 3.41 GPA, made it to all of the major events and even coordinated the Christmas Concert, which I assure you is a **massive deal**, and helped to tech out for the *Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe*. Oh, and for the last community dinner, I didn’t even get to sit down -- I was on the serving team that night. How’s that for a send-off? I’m not even being sarcastic or sardonic here, I am actually happy that it worked out like it did, because it gave me an opportunity to prove to *myself* that, despite being in the throes of some pretty heavy depression, I could still knock it out of the park.\n![derek_jeter_homerun.gif](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbfX9mYcsfr8NVxC71jMK1FjVUkQbehLqtDcDFvCEw7pq/derek_jeter_homerun.gif)\n\nI have to, not out of obligation but rather gratitude, commend the seminary on their efforts to help me. There were some hiccups with communication between them and me at first, particularly with regards to my arrival there in ‘17. There were some who listened, others who acknowledged, and others still who welcomed and sought to understand. By the end, there was nothing but support and concern for the state of my health and my depression. It was not based out of the idea of liability or accountability, their concern comes from a genuine place of Christian love and caring. I made a few promises to keep in touch with many of the priests and professors, and I harbor no ill will towards them; just the opposite, in point of fact, as most of them are caring, supportive, nurturing, and everything that one would expect from a Christian environment.\n\nAnd even if I was to harbor ill will towards the director of seminarians for my home diocese, that would not bother him much at all; more to the point, I think he would revel in it, and use it as proof that he made the right decision to cut me off at the knees.\n![anakin_cut_off.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmY5bkxErjEU7PwPL6GmBx4eNG74jgaTa823ZCiRbDQroE/anakin_cut_off.png)\nNot only will I not give him that satisfaction, I rather value my soul and I don’t need the hatred and negativity to eat away at me. And while I am struggling with some of it sometimes, I have days that I find myself just rutting annoyed about it, I have to say that I am still able to do some good out here on this side of the seminary gates, so there is something to be said for keeping on the proper course here.\n\nI’m finding that, as my brother seminarians were scheduled to report back for their retreats yesterday afternoon, I am actually more than OK about not joining them. Sure, I could use the retreat, the quiet, the time for introspection and for prayer. But I also need my people -- my parents, my sibs and sibs-in-law and their kids, and my friends who are as much brothers and sisters to me as my own via biology. It is great to touch base with my people, to be around to do local work on my family’s home networks and computers, and to rebuild that which has deteriorated over time -- my own self and sense of self-worth.\n\nSo here’s the being back in the saddle. Here’s to a solid income and a chance to be out in the ‘Verse again for a spell, wandering and roaming and yet staying connected to the people and places that matter most to me. And here’s to keeping my head above water, no matter what.",
