They issue bonds (and pay interest on those bonds) to generate the amount of capital they need to finance their wars and other insane expenditures .... but they are only able to do this because of how the fiat money system works. \n\nIf people stop using fiat and switch into a form of money that can't be created out of thin air - and you have many choices these days - then all this will end. \n\nCongress accepts the monetary and banking system as it allows them to get away with things that they could not do otherwise - e.g. if they wanted money for a war, they'd BE FORCED to raise taxes instead of just issuing more debt.\n\nLarge institutional investors and other governments (the big buyers of US government debt) wouldn't buy government issued bonds at all if the government didn't have a central bank that would ultimately print money out of thin air and buy them all up in the end -- simply because their is no way the government would be able to pay the interest and the principle without eventually printing money -- meaning that the bonds would be worthless from the start.  The big investors know how the fiat monetary system works and understand that their investment is secured by a central banks ability to print money and buy up all the debt in the end.\n\nThe alternative to fiat money however, is the raising of taxes to cover expenditures, and if politicians had to this, those supporting such tax increases, would be out of office in a heartbeat. \n\nIt's the fact that they do not have to directly (and immediately) stick the cost on the little guy that allows the politicians to get away with this farce. \n\nLeave the fiat monetary and banking system dinosaur system behind and we can begin to change this world for the better ... stay in that system and you'll eventually have nothing to eat but the dirt beneath your feet, as it will rob you senseless and leave you and your children with nothing.",
