      "title": "How to Keep Praying Mantises as Pets - Praying Mantis Care Sheet",
      "body": "The following article is a general care sheet for keeping praying mantids. For a more detailed care sheet on a specific species click on one of our praying mantis species to get a more accurate care sheet for caring for your pet.\n\nPraying mantis are without doubt one of the most interesting invertebrates you can keep as a pet. With their triangular neck and big eggs along with their front hook legs they are quite a unique insect.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSEUuk1DmAAPKh4GyM2KNyjsUmvqqehRKnQP6rj8eVLgX/image.png)\n\n<h1>Caring for Praying Mantis</h1>\n\nOf over 2,000 different species of mantis there are only a small number that are available to keep in the hobby. Caring for these different mantis will generally differ through temperature, humidity level and feeding requirements.\n\nIt is best to start with a species that is easy to keep such as: the European Mantis, African Mantis or Asian Mantis, before moving on to a species that is more difficult to care for such as: the Orchid or Devil’s Mantis.\n\nPraying mantis inhabit warmer to tropical parts of the world. They can be found in many different parts of the world from Southern Europe, North and Latin America, Africa as well as Asian. They are commonly found above ground: in tall grass, bushes or in trees. Their camouflage mimics leaves and blades of grass where they hide motionless waiting for unsuspecting insects to walk past before lunging their hooks front legs forward in order to capture the prey.\n\nIf you want to keeping praying mantids you will need to recreate a warm and humid environment. It is important to note that the enclosure you keep them in should be at least three times higher than the praying mantis is long to ensure the praying mantis has enough space to moult.\n\nPraying Mantis Tank\n\nThe first step creating the ideal housing conditions for your praying mantis is to find a suitable cage for your mantis.\n\nThe enclosure you keep your praying mantis in should be at least 2x longer than the praying mantis and 3x taller than the mantis is long. This is to ensure than the praying mantis has enough space to moult. If the mantis does not moult properly it could get stuck in its skin and die or in a better case scenario: lose a leg. A bad moult is the most likely cause of death for a praying mantis. To reduce the case of a bad moult you will need a suitably sized container to keep your mantid in as well as maintaining appropriate humidity levels.\n\nSome care sheets recommend a container that is 2x taller than the praying mantis, however, since there will likely be decorations in the terrarium I prefer to use a tank that is 3x larger to ensure the decorations are not taking up potential moulting places.\n\n<h1>No Way of Escape</h1>\n\nIt should go without saying that the container you use should be escape proof. You don’t want to lose your pet as you may never find it again! Make sure that ventilation holes in the terrarium are not large enough for your mantid to escape through. The lid should also have a tight fit to prevent mantids from escaping from under the lid.\n\n<h1>Visibility of the Enclosure</h1>\n\nWhen choosing a suitable cage, choose one that allows for good visibility such as a glass tank, cricket keeper, Plexiglas/Perspex, or even a storage container.\n\n<h1>Heat Retention</h1>\n\nAlthough most praying mantids will be happy with the summer time temperatures of most households, you may have to provide them with a heat mat to ensure that the do not get too cold and die. The ideal heat for most praying mantis is 25C. This temperature can be attained by using a heat mat. Plastic cages retain heat better than glass cages and are cheaper. However, a glass cages offer better visibility.\n\n<h1>Access to Cage for General Care</h1>\n\nYour praying mantis cage should be easy to access and get into. You will be doing routine tasks such as feeding, misting the cage and cleaning up parts of uneaten food so having a cage that is easy to access will make the routine tasks easier for you as a praying mantis keeper.\n\n<h1>Suitable Cages for Praying Mantis</h1>\n\nNow that the importance of size and the main features of a good praying mantis enclosure have been covered. Let’s delve into the topic of finding a suitable cage.\n\nThe type of cage you get for your mantis will mostly depend on the size of mantis you are keeping. Baby praying mantids or “nymphs” can be as small as a centimetre in size when they first hatch yet reach sizes larger than 10cm in some species. Therefore, if you put a small praying mantis into a tank that would be suitable for an adult you may never see it. Additionally, the tank might be too large for your praying mantis to find food in its enclosure. Keep your small praying mantis in small cages and then house them in larger cages as they grow.\n\n<h1>Nymph Enclosures</h1>\n\nFor small nymph and juvenile praying mantis’ I like to use live food tubs and other plastic containers big enough to house the individual.\n\n<h1>Adult Mantis Enclosures</h1>\n\nLarger or even adult praying mantis’ can be kept in larger containers such as sweet jars or plastic containers such as critter keepers. These are great for viewing your pet praying mantis and they allow you to create a nice realistic terrarium set up.\n\n<h1>Feeding Pet Praying Mantis</h1>\n\nWhen it comes to feeding praying mantises, they will readily accept most feeder foods: crickets, cockroaches, mealworms will all be eaten by the available beginner species of mantids. The advanced species of praying mantis will require more specialised prey.\n\n<h1>Cleaning the Mantis Terrarium</h1>\n\nOne of the many benefits of keeping praying mantises is that they hardly require any cleaning. Since they do not produce much waste all you will have to do, as part of your regular enclosure maintenance, is clean up any uneaten prey items.\n\nTo clean the whole enclosure, simply remove all the substrate and wash the inside of the terrarium with hot water. Using detergents or soap may harm your pet mantis so avoid using chemicals when cleaning your mantis’s enclosure. Keeping spiderlings also gives you the opportunity to watch your pet tarantula grow from a sling into an adult. This is very rewarding compared to buying an adult. Growing out a spiderling will allow you to witness the different colour changes a tarantula can go through as it grows and matures.\n\nDue to the low price barrier to entry and the rewarding side of keeping slings, many tarantula keepers choose to buy spiderlings.\n\nHowever, keeping small tarantulas does come with its disadvantages as they will be more sensitive to the wrong conditions and you will have to feed them smaller food items. As long as you can offer smaller prey and give your spiderling the correct conditions, you will soon raise your small sling into an impressive adult tarantula.\n\n<h1>Housing Tarantula Spiderlings</h1>\n\nAs with housing adult tarantulas, terrestrial ground dwelling tarantulas will need a cage that is longer than it is tall while arboreal tree dwellings tarantulas will require a tall terrarium.\n\nHousing spiderling tarantulas is not difficult. They can be kept in deli cups, jam jars, small plastic tubs. There are even cages designed for keeping spiderlings and come in different sizes to house the small spiders at different stages of growth. I have a few Critter boxes by Lucky Reptile. They provide good visibility, ventilation and even have a locking lid. Additionally, there is a little stopper on the top of the Critter Box to allow you to easily feed your spiderling by dropping the food in from the top. These are ideal for housing spiderlings however, they are more expensive than the cheaper alternatives such as deli cups.\n\n<h1>Water</h1>\n\nSpiderlings do not need a water dish. I prefer to keep the substrate slightly moist. When spiderlings need water they will pick up the moist substrate and drink from it. You can also add a small piece of moistened sponge to give the sling a chance to drink.\n\n<h1>Feeding Spiderlings</h1>\n\nSpiderlings, due to their small size will require smaller prey items. You can buy pinhead crickets and fruitflies are great for feeding to small spiderlings and they are easily found at your local live food supplier.\n\nI like to breed my own cockroaches to feed my pet slings. I use red runner cockroaches. These contain less chitin than cockroaches and they are superior to small dubia cockroaches that have a hard exoskeleton. Small tarantulas can find it difficult to pierce the exoskeleton. Red runners on the other hand, are soft and easy for the sling to feed on. Check out my guide to find out how to breed live food for pets.\n\nAs your spiderling grows you should also increase the size of the food items you give to your spiderlings.\n\nThe amount you feed depends on how fast you want your spiderling to grow as well as how often your tarantula is willing to eat. You can feed your sling once every two weeks, every week or even as often as 3+ times per week. Feeding more frequently will result in a faster growing tarantula.\n\nKeep a record of when your spiderling eats and does not. This way you will be able to create a feeding schedule that suits your slings.",

      "body": "<h1>Fear the Walking Spider</h1>\nThe site of a spider is enough to in still fear into most people or enough of a fright for the poor spider to be greeted with a round house squashing leg kick to the head.\n\nTo me spiders are misunderstood. In a house they help with pest control, killing and eating flies, cockroaches and other bugs. A step further to merely allowing spiders to share your living space is to buy and own one as a pet. \n\n<h1>I'm a Tarantula Keeper and Proud of it</h1>\nCompared to your traditional pet, tarantulas are very affordable. You can easily keep them is a plastic box with some potting soil and piece of bark to hide under.  They will not need to be taken to the vet which can be very expensive. They also don't eat much and are cheap to feed. \nIn most cases, the cost of the tarantula itself is the biggest expensive as well as feeding it. But there is a cheap way to feed them. \n\n<h1>Feeding my Tarantulas</h1>\nMost people who keep exotic pets such as lizards or tarantulas feed them on crickets. I prefer to breed my own cockroaches to feed my tarantulas. The cockroaches I feed on bits of fruit and bread. Breeding my own cockroaches means that I no longer spend any money on feeding my tarantulas. I have more than enough cockroaches to feed my tarantulas and I even sell surplus cockroaches to other exotic pet keepers. \n\n<h1>Cost Effective</h1>\nTarantulas truly are a cost effective pet that can live more than 20 years in captivity.
