| body | She didn’t actually look bad at all. She tries too hard, that’s the thing. Makeup a tad too strong. Clothes screaming for attention. All of it is somehow cheap and pathetic, though. A guy that can’t afford to be picky would jump her like a tiger. At the end of the day however, she is no more than basic. Average, maybe even a bit below. She’s there alone. Nowhere to retreat, regroup and attack anew. She’s bursting, desperate. Which is why she’s buzzing. From person to person, same story, same tone, same phrases even. And as time goes on, and her energy depletes, it’s more and more obvious that everything’s a mask, a farce, that she’s forcing herself to keep going even though every instinct is telling her to quit, go home and cry herself to sleep like a human being. He rejected her. For whatever reason, most likely because she’s, well, not enough. She doesn’t have much to offer, and he knows he could do better. And everything went to shit from there. Her pride kicked in, spite, anger, whatever it is these strange creatures we call women experience in those situations. And a singular goal became a priority – be with someone, and make sure he sees it. Doesn’t matter anymore. She went for the second best, of course. Not happening. His buddy. Not really. Now anyone paying attention, which is not difficult in a bar that small with around a dozen people present, notices what’s going on. Chances are dropping rapidly, as is her dignity. She’s thrown away so much of it already that it seems her only option was to actually hook up with someone and pretend that was the plan all along. People are laughing, she’s losing her shit, like a dog whose owners have people over for the first time. She doesn’t know where to go, who to talk to, she isn’t keeping track of the type or amount of her drinks. It’s late, and the show becomes dull. He goes for one last piss and, without looking back, leaves. A couple is kissing in a relatively solitary half-dark corner next to the exit, obvious despite the hiding place. She found the most miserable creature in the group, who’s probably on a decade-long dry spell and not choosy at all. Fuck. |

| title | The Couch - A short story from the 'Images from the life of a social sputum' collection |
| body | Word by word, one person leaving after the other, and they were left alone. That wasn’t his intention, which made him a tad uncomfortable. He didn’t feel like going home yet, however, so he stalled. And fucked up. The owner of the pub gave him a sign it’s closing time. And indeed, they were the last patrons there. He had a few, quite a few actually, and reasoning went down the drain – instincts took over. He felt particularly distant from everything. Being alone transformed into loneliness. It broke him. He invited her over. The couch. They’re sitting quietly in the dark, aside from the TV he’s using to play music. She obviously never heard any of the songs. And how would she? It felt as if he were cheating the system, giving her secret codes to beat the game. And taking the experience of discovery away from her. Yes, he’ll unlock some knowledge for her, he’ll catapult her hundreds of steps ahead in one night. Or he could, at least. She’s a high school senior, after all. You fucking idiot. There are these bands and songs that are better than textbooks, life lessons, and experiences. They transport you to a different dimension of thought, where laws up until that point familiar no longer apply and, at least for a moment, let you understand the inconceivable. However, at least in the beginning, one needs a guide. He felt robbed because he didn’t have someone to show him the ropes when he was younger, because he had to, painfully slowly, figure everything out on his own. Truth be told, the gradual rise let everything settle into place and dictated a sustainable pace. Still, had someone opened his eyes at sixteen to a tenth of what he knows now, his knowledge today would be tenfold. Or at least he thought so. He knew people who had that privilege. Older sisters or women whose eye they caught, who’s show them a few tricks. Most of them got spat out into the world of adults, appeared to have found their footing, but remained somehow damaged. Like a sword that shatters because it got tempered at a temperature it couldn’t yet handle, instead of progressively. But this kid is brilliant. She could take it. She took his hand, eyes still closed. It felt like his astral projection, from somewhere around the ceiling, slammed back into his body. Shit, what now? |

He invited her over.\n\nThe couch. You fucking idiot.\n\nThere are these bands and songs that are better than textbooks, life lessons, and experiences. They transport you to a different dimension of thought, where laws up until that point familiar no longer apply and, at least for a moment, let you understand the inconceivable. However, at least in the beginning, one needs a guide.\n\nHe felt robbed because he didn’t have someone to show him the ropes when he was younger, because he had to, painfully slowly, figure everything out on his own. Truth be told, the gradual rise let everything settle into place and dictated a sustainable pace. Still, had someone opened his eyes at sixteen to a tenth of what he knows now, his knowledge today would be tenfold. Or at least he thought so.\n\nHe knew people who had that privilege. She could take it.\n\nShe took his hand, eyes still closed.\n\nIt felt like his astral projection, from somewhere around the ceiling, slammed back into his body. Shit, what now?",

| body | He couldn’t wrap his mind around the fact that someone could stink at 7 AM. He came up with two explanations – either the man had been working for hours already, or he hadn’t showered in at least a day. Disgusted, he eliminated the first option and, stealthily looking over a book (he always carried one around) continued to watch those abominations. A physical examination for professionals, in a state-owned hospital no less. Horrid business. Professionals – truckers, construction workers and the rest of the partially sunburnt gang. Pale tattoos, dirt under their nails, a tooth here and there. They’re not bad people, far from it, nor are they all the same. On the contrary – people say dirty hands make for clean money. Still, not necessarily his choice of company. He remembered reading the law on guns, and how everyone who wanted a holding permit had to go through an assessment, among other things. He planned on getting a license to carry a gun – people are, at the end of the day, animals, and sooner or later, the time will come when your life will depend on who fucks over the other guy first. The procedure was too long, though, so he gave up. He bought the strongest legal crossbow instead. The point was that it’s highly likely that at least a few of these men are there for exactly that reason. Some among them will, in a few months, legally possess an object that can instantly end a person’s life. A discouraging thought, to say the least. The gang, with him in the back, slowly crawls from office to office and from specialist to fucking specialist. The doctors swiftly fuck them off without even a glance. Do you get chest pain, no. you’re healthy bye bye. Can you hear this sound? Great, go operate heavy machinery. You filled a mental health questionnaire, all answers no, you could even sign your name? Nothing’s bothering you? Perfect. Next! It’s fascinating how every single person present knows exactly who came at what point and whose turn it is. Flawless memory of a sequence of dozens of strangers. They all get up as one as soon as a door opens, as if the doctor will hand-pick them over everyone else. They couldn’t care less, they don’t even yell the wonderful ‘’NEXT!’’ at the top of their lungs. Everyone got there half an hour ahead of opening time, to fuck the system, but if everyone fucks the system then a new system is created and no one fucked it. The Earth could use a culling. More out of curiosity than actual need, he answers the questions honestly. That means he triggers the indicators for depression, apathy, suicidal thoughts, OCD. It’s his turn just before the break, he’s surprised they even saw him. The doctor briefly explains that she’s a psychologist. She starts writing. Without looking up at him, she asks for the questionnaire. She immediately turns it to the evaluation page. They lock eyes for a few seconds, she asks whether he got tired from waiting. His answer, as if he spent the morning digging. She laughs at the quip, stamps and signs her name. All’s well, she says. Goodbye. He stops outside the door to see what she wrote down. No signs of this and that, indications such and such none. Conclusion – **inconspicuous**. |

| body | He never watched a person die. The actual process of a life ending. He’s seen a few dead bodies, his grandma, some others. Perfectly motionless people with yellowish cheeks. When they get a bit of work and makeup, were it not for the casket, one might mistake them for someone in deep sleep. That night, out of the ordinary, he walked home. He decided not to even take his car since he planned on drinking. He met with a friend from high school, which he does about annually, and even though the plan was to have a quick beer, he knew how it would end. It was better not to drive. He was right. The city is deserted after 2 AM. The noise coming from one car is long gone before the next one appears. He hadn’t seen a fellow pedestrian in over ten minutes. He relished the freshness of the air and the solitude – that entire space was his, and although strolling isn’t his favorite activity, there was nowhere else he’d rather be in that moment. At first, he thought he was seeing things. He never had any particular visual hallucinations, in fact, stories about them really pissed him off, but from time to time his eyes would go dark for a moment or he’d see some sort of a shadow. This was no shadow. A girl with bright green hair was sitting calmly on the bridge railings and looked downriver. She appeared so nonchalant and comfortable, as if that’s something she does every day. However, he immediately knew she simply doesn’t care. It made no difference. He knew how liberating that felt. He slowed down and deliberately made his steps stiff and loud, so she’d notice him a long way off - to avoid startling her and causing havoc. She didn’t even glance at him. He quickly came up to her, stopped next to her and looked in the same direction. They remained still in silence for a while. It felt like he was immediately sober. He lit a small joint left from what he’d prepared for that night, inhaled briefly and passed it to her. She took it without a word. Still looking in the distance, he asked what was wrong. He remembered that cliché in news stories when, after a tragedy, neighbors and friends of the person involved always say he was nice, good and ordinary. Just like her, aside from the hair. After a long silence, she told him it simply isn’t worth the effort anymore. As if she were explaining it to herself one more time, with ice in her voice she said she’d tried everything she wanted to try, that nothing’s pushing her onward and that the only thing she truly wants is for all of it to stop. He couldn’t beat those arguments. A few more cars passed, but no one paid the pair any attention. He was holding the roach in his hand because he didn’t want to throw it in the river, and the closest trashcan was at the end of the bridge. Even if there was one closer, he wouldn’t have left her. Who knows how long they stayed there. Finally, she asked him politely not to try anything stupid and save her. She made him promise. She let go elegantly, without a sound. He heard a faint noise when she hit the surface. The water seemed thicker than tar and appeared to be the same color. He never watched a person die. He wished it could have remained that way. |

| body | I think that everyone needs 3 types of friends: one in a lover - someone you can spend 90% of your time with, one in an actual best friend (preferably of the same gender) - there are some things you can only discuss with those, and one in a relative - a biological bond makes it a bit deeper. With variations, that's a great closed circle (more of a rectangle) that can fill all social needs. |

| body | It was one of those walks with a goal: he was going to uni, work, the store, whatever. But it went on as if it wasn't happening. As if he were simply roaming the streets like it lasted forever but had no beginning or end. He was unaware of his surroundings, aside from a vague sense of his current position relative to the destination. Because of this, he didn’t notice the older gentleman sitting on the staircase of a grisly-looking building when he wished him a good day. He replied automatically, without thinking and glanced the man briefly. What stopped his walking and his pointless chain of thought, though, was the old man’s next sentence – ‘It’ll only be good if you want it to be.’ Now, even though he always refrained from getting into conversations with strangers, especially if they couldn’t have some sort of meaningful result, he asked the man to explain his unusual remark. The smile on his face was a clear indicator that he could barely hold his excitement as he promptly began. - Here’s the deal, kid. It’s all up to you. If you want something, go out and get it. It’s simple. For example, if you don’t have a job, it’s your job to look for a job eight hours a day. If you’d like a nice girl, go ask that pretty lady over there for the time (a cute blonde standing a few steps away from them looks down and blushes, the old geezer grins – this trick obviously worked more than a few times). You can sit around and complain all day, but if you give, you’ll get. Someone’s keeping score out there, I’m sure of it. - How come? What about the things we can’t control? What if someone’s born sick, if they have an abusive father, if they get hit by a bus? The universe is governed by entropy, it’s in constant chaos and it really makes no difference if you’re human or a mosquito. It doesn’t keep track of what you do, nor does it care enough to even try. It might not be malevolent, but it sure isn’t benevolent, either. It simply doesn’t give a shit. What about entropy? - Hey, kid. With all due respect, cut the crap. It can be done, some people just have to work more, others less. It is what it is. Everyone's problems are the biggest in the world in their opinion, but if everyone just sat and talked shit, where would we be? Both men are smiling at this point. They respect each other’s views, deeply believe in the own ones, and realize that they can’t convert the other one in their beliefs. They met for the first, and probably last time, which gives the conversation additional value. - Take care. - You too, kid. Don’t give in. |

| title | The Cocktail - A short story from the 'Images from the life of a social sputum' collection |
| body | She reminded him of someone he used to love. Or maybe still does? That was the biggest problem. She’s beautiful, definitely. Perfect smile, glistening eyes, tasteful makeup. Wonderful hands with long fingers. Skinny, many would say unwomanly, but that’s not the case. There’s an obvious frailty about her that gives her that traditionally female manner. She’s behind the bar. He knows her name, knows of her from a context through a person, but she has no idea who he is. And how would she, when she lets hundreds and thousands of people through her mind. If she remembered every tenth person, she’d lose it in a matter of days. She smokes. He didn’t like that at all. She flirts for tips. He liked that even less. Fuck it. He’s attracted to her - for a couple of reasons, three beers are gone and there’s no going back. Luckily, he has a perfectly obvious and justified reason to come up to her – he has to order a drink, of course. He never would have otherwise. He’s standing at the bar, waiting. He uses the time to, completely protected by the current situation, look at her. Even if someone noticed he’s staring (and who even gives a shit about him), it’s acceptable because he has to keep track. The group of people standing in front of him suddenly disperses. Unexpected circumstance. He thought he had more time. That’s what you get for getting drunk, dumbass. You don’t have it under control. He has to say something at that exact moment – something that will, one the one hand, sound completely adequate and cool if she doesn’t deem him special, but also have a certain connotation if she’s interested after all and somehow knows who he is just as he knows her. Now or never. ‘I’d like something no one’s ordered tonight.’ Oh boy. This one could go either way. He’s not sober enough to be able to objectively assess. She’s looking at him blankly, confused. The pause lasts a few seconds, but it seems as though the event is taking place near a black hole which is inducing a time distortion. Suddenly his brain kicks in, the devious cunt, and starts displaying all the undesirable scenarios at the speed of light. Finally, she smiles. In a pretty way, teeth and all. ‘How about a cocktail?’ Thank the cosmos. What a relief. With a smile, he agrees and tells her whichever. On his way back to the spot by the wall, where he was standing prior to the whole endeavor, he notices a few more people are drinking the same Cuba Libre. He can tell by the lime slice and the straw. To hell with it, though. The smile looked genuine. And she makes one hell of a Cuba Libre. |

"title": "The Cocktail - A short story from the 'Images from the life of a social sputum' collection",
"body": "She reminded him of someone he used to love. Or maybe still does? That was the biggest problem.\n\nShe’s beautiful, definitely. Perfect smile, glistening eyes, tasteful makeup. Wonderful hands with long fingers. Skinny, many would say unwomanly, but that’s not the case. There’s an obvious frailty about her that gives her that traditionally female manner.\n\nShe’s behind the bar. He knows her name, knows of her from a context through a person, but she has no idea who he is. And how would she, when she lets hundreds and thousands of people through her mind. If she remembered every tenth person, she’d lose it in a matter of days.\n\nShe smokes. He never would have otherwise.\n\nHe’s standing at the bar, waiting. Now or never.\n\n‘I’d like something no one’s ordered tonight.’\n\nOh boy. This one could go either way. He’s not sober enough to be able to objectively assess. She’s looking at him blankly, confused. The pause lasts a few seconds, but it seems as though the event is taking place near a black hole which is inducing a time distortion. Suddenly his brain kicks in, the devious cunt, and starts displaying all the undesirable scenarios at the speed of light.\n\nFinally, she smiles. In a pretty way, teeth and all. ‘How about a cocktail?’\n\nThank the cosmos. What a relief. With a smile, he agrees and tells her whichever.\n\nOn his way back to the spot by the wall, where he was standing prior to the whole endeavor, he notices a few more people are drinking the same Cuba Libre. He can tell by the lime slice and the straw. To hell with it, though. The smile looked genuine.\n\nAnd she makes one hell of a Cuba Libre.",
