      "body": "Your speed to “Prototype X” determines your success. In this article, I’ll tell you why and also how I’ve shaved weeks off my path to Prototype X.\n\n“Prototype X” is the next major prototype you need to move the project ahead. It could be the concept prototype, production prototype or the DoTTEW (DOes This Thing Even Work) Prototype. Here are tricks I have discovered to speed up my prototyping.  And even though I can often make a prototype in a day, I still want to make them quicker.\n\nTo speed prototyping, \n1) I’ve standardized on suites of core tools \n      a. ATMEL MCUs\n      b. Eagle CAD (PCB & Electronic Design)\n      c. Fusion360 (CAD/CAM/SIMULTAION)\n\n2) I’ve deeply learned how to build difficult components in-house\n      a. I use SLA and FDM to make gears/cases/parts out of resins, PLA, ABS and other plastics to quickly go from idea to physical object.\n      b. I machine Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) in-house. So I get electronic prototypes in one day instead of two weeks.\n      c. I get functional nylon and metal parts in a day using CAM and a CNC Mill or Lathe or both.\n\n3) I’ve filled my shop with tools that let me use many different methods of production. I own and know how to effectively operate…\n      a. Several different 3D printers (SLA/FDM)\n      b. Large Laser Cutter\n      c. CNC Mill and Lathe\n      d. Plastic injection molding machines\n      e. Thermoforming machines (in several sizes)\n\n4) I’m a prototype realist. Prototype X is important, but not the journey to it. You’re making a prototype, not a story.\n      a. I make the prototype to solve the problem. Meaning if I’m testing functionality I often put looks second. But if I’m presenting a prototype for evaluation by a potential customer, then I put looks at or equal to functionality. The idea is to quickly get to Prototype X and sometimes it doesn’t matter if it’s red or blue or no color.\n      b. I don’t make parts I can buy. If your prototype needs a part you can buy, then just buy it. The prototype is important, not each piece.\n\n5) Brutal honesty is better than kudos\n      a. Quickly evaluate the prototype. Do it as you first use it.\n      b. If it works, great, move on to the next phase of the project. If it does not work then determine why. \n      c. Kill the prototype if it needs to be killed. Let this version of the prototype die with dignity and move on.\n      d. Have others test it. But don’t tell them what to think, listen to them.\n\nThese are some of the things I have learned while making prototypes over the past few decades. I’d love to hear your thoughts too. Essentially, they just complain.  And then dozens of other people *like that post*.  Nothing get's better, changes or moves ahead.\n\nYou've seen the stupid partisan posts flooding Linkedin, Facebook and every other nook and cranny on the web and media.  At best, it creates a negative and hostile environment. And at worse, it's not solving any of the problems we'd like to see solved.\n\nTo help things get better, I'm tagging negative posts with **#ShareSolutionsNotComplaints**.  And then I'm asking people **_\"What solutions do you support?\"_** For that I'm using **#ButWhatsYourSolution**\n\nBy focusing people on solutions I think we can begin discussions. Knowing how to pick winners is a crazy valuable skill.  And in this article, I'll show you 7 ways to test your ideas to do just that.\n\nThe Problem: You have ideas, but don't know which you should invest time in and pursue.  Let's face it not every idea is a good idea.  You've even seen major companies make product flops.  Product Flops are expensive and can even kill a company.  Professional Inventors are well aware of this and use proven tricks BEFORE investing in an idea.  Here are 7 Tricks they use that you can use.\n\n## 1. Reality Check (By You)\nThere is a euphoria that innovators feel when we first notice an idea.  It is amazing.  Our minds starts to apply our idea to every potential situation on the planet, and soon we're calculating our riches. We think, \"if I just sell X at $Y, I'll never have to work again!\"  Our brain is pretty convincing.  Soon we're quitting our job, selling our home, ordering a million units and guess what... we don't even know if the idea is any good.\n\nTime for a reality check.  Live through the euphoria and see what you think about the idea after a good night of sleep.  Many of the people I work with are much happier when they evaluate their idea after the euphoria subsided.\n\nIf the idea was great today, it will be great tomorrow.  Take a bite from Eve's apple and look at the idea again when you're sober with reality.  Is it as good as you thought a day later?  If yes, move to step 2, if not, spend more time on it to see where it goes.\n \n## 2. Ask The Big Question AND Listen\nAsk potential customers, in a particular way, The Big Question.  Sounds cool right? It is, and it works.\n\nThe Big Question is a question that reveals if someone needs your invention so much that they'd pay for it.  The question should be open-ended, nebulous but straightforward.  You're exploring, not educating. You want to hear what they have to say.\n\nThe Big Question works better if they don't know it's your idea.  People lie when they think it's your idea because they don't want to hurt your feelings.\n\nExamples of The Big  Question are, \n* \"Hey, I saw this **_self-cleaning whisk_** on google, who would buy that?\"\n* \"Did you hear about the **_dog leash that trains your dog_**?\"\n* \"I read there is a new **_soda straw that decomposes in two weeks after use_**, does anyone care about that?\"\n\nThen listen to them. Their first question/statement reveals a lot.  \n\nIf they say, \"Wow, I'd like that, what does it cost?\"  You may have a winner.  If they say, \"ABC Corp tried that years ago, and no one wanted it.\" Or, \"it depends on price if it's more than $1 no one will buy it.\" Or \"I do it by hand in 3 seconds for free, that is worthless for me.\"\n\nThe first answer (\"ABC Corp tried\"), say's there may be a need but ABC didn't execute well, or there is no need and ABC misread the market.\n\nThe second answer \"depends on the price,\" reveals that the market may like the product but places a low value on it.  \n\nThe third answer, \"worthless for me,\" means they don't see value in it.\n\nTheir responses are designed to guide you.  They may be wrong.  But get as many opinions as you can knowing they may be wrong.  Plenty of people said, \"We don't need cars... we have horses.\"  \n\nThey may be wrong but understand they may be right.  It's better to kill an idea before you mortgage the house and sell the dog.  Take the information and process it in your brain. Give each person's response the appropriate weight and either kill the idea or move it ahead or do more tests.\n\nDon't ignore things that seem universal.  If everyone is saying similar things, you will need to address it at some time in the future.\n\n## 3. Frankenstein Prototype\nMake a Physical Frankenstein Prototype.  It doesn't need to look good.  It just needs to work, kinda-sorta, maybe once.  This type of prototype tells you oodles about your idea.  You see the barnacles and warts and get a glimpse into its potential future.  Plus, you'll have proved it works.  This is called **_reduction to practice_**  and you use to help file your patent.\n\nI've made prototypes by dumping my junk drawer out onto my desk and assembling parts with epoxy putty, IR glue, and duck tape. \n\nA 3D printer is great but a Frankenstein Prototype can usually be made faster, often cheaper and 1000% uglier.  The power is in the ugly.  \n\nIf it works, you'll love it no matter what it looks like.  And when you don't care about the looks, you tend to focus on functionality.\n\n> \"If women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.\" \n> **Red Green** of **_The Red Green Show_**\n\n## 4. Get Orders using a Sell Sheet\nA Sell Sheet is a one-page brochure that tells what your idea is, how it works, what it costs, why people need it and is designed to make a person want to buy the idea. And by \"buy\" I mean for real purchase, give you a credit card and expect delivery \"buy.\"  You should only do this if you have IP protection (patent filed, the trademark registered, domain name purchased) and you know 1000000% that it works, is legal to sell and is safe.\n\nI have used sell-sheets and Frankenstein prototypes to sign sales orders, license deals, and wholesale orders.  You can do the same. \n\n## 5.  Crowdfund It\nYou have to be relatively far along to get a crowdfunding campaign to succeed.  But getting one to fund shows your product is wanted. And the initial orders can make your invention a licensing target.  It could also make you a knock-off target so get your IP in order first.  And then take a big swing at the next fastball.\n\n## 6. Small Run Production\nOkay, so you've made one and liked it.  Then you made two, and your Uncle Ron liked it. Usually, no one cares what Uncle Ron thinks, but your Uncle Ron owns a Convenience Store.  And he agreed to let you put up a POP (Point of Purchase) display with 12 units in it.  He won't pay you for them but, he'll take in the money and give you 1/2 after they sell.\n\nWay to go Uncle Ron.  This is called a Consignment Sale.  And you will get a glimpse of how your product and packaging work in a real store environment with real customers.  Don't encourage Uncle Ron to pump up sales.  You're not looking to falsely kill it on these 12 units; you want to know if you should roll out bigger.  See if they fly off the shelves or at least sell themselves.\n\nGo to the store and watch what people do in the aisle.  Do they even notice your product? After someone buys one, talk to them about it and ask why they bought it.  It's all about learning.\n\nIf the units sell, you can make a small run of several hundred or a thousand.  If they don't sell, then you have a problem.  If you can't sell 12, you probably won't sell a production run.  Sell what sells.  It makes life much more comfortable.\n\n## 7. TV Infomercial Kinda-Sorta\nI once filmed a tiny little infomercial in my home.  It cost me about $2400.  Then I bought 10 ads on a cable channel.  They cost about $250 each.  I put less than $5,000 in, and when we aired, I sold $16,000 of product. That's a better than 6:1 return.  Meaning that for each ad dollar I spent I got back $6.  Awesome.  I went on to sell over a million units of that product.\n\nYou can make a cheesy ad, hire a phone-service to accept the orders or set up a website to take the orders and go for it.  You'll find out quick if people like your invention enough to pay for it. \n\nWant to do it on the cheap?  Film it yourself. Make a Shopify site with PayPal button.  Pay for Facebook ads and go.  If people buy, you're in business.  Money/orders are a great way to tell if people like your idea.\n\nThose are my 7 favorite way to sell if an idea has the chops to succeed.\n\nThere are other ways to test your ideas like tradeshows, market surveys, etc, but these are a good start. They are eager to take over the world with a quiver of confidence backed by rosy myths, book knowledge, and guesses. But they have no skills.  And thinking you know more than you do is a big problem.  \n\nSmarts does not equal skill. Confusing the two is dangerous. Like Mike Tyson says, \"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.\"  Here's how to dodge the punch.\n\n### Smart people _can_ figure things out.\n\n## Skilled people _know_.\n<br>\n**How do you gain skill?** Through experience.  Do you care if your parachuting coach has 150 IQ or that he's safely done 1000 jumps? Smart is not a substitute for skill.\n\n**Why does it matter?** It matters because smart people get in trouble thinking they don't need skill. Confuse smarts for skill blinds you to storms, hidden problems and the tripwires that lie ahead. \n\nOne programmer I know reads every book on a subject and then thinks he knows everything about it. But when you ask him to explain how his ideas work in specific cases, he can't. He brushes the questions off saying he'll figure it out. He's smart but not skilled. \n\n**How does one get skilled?** Experience. If you want to be skilled at entrepreneurship, then start something. It should be a small something. Rent a hot dog cart and sell hot dogs this weekend.  Or go to the flea market with junk you scavenged from dumpsters and the dollar store.  It doesn't matter if you make money, although that should be a secondary goal. Your primary goal should be building skills by experiencing entrepreneurship.  **Please, don't mortgage the house.**  No matter how smart it is your idea is probably not that good.  Start slow and develop your skills.  Remember, profits and loses, success and failures, winning and losing, all build skill. ***So do it as cheaply and quickly as possible.***\n\n**How do you become smart?** Much debate on that. Some people are born more gifted in the smarts-department than others, but that doesn't matter.  We all know brilliant failures.  And most people don't know the difference between a smart person and a skilled person. If you have the skill, you appear smart. \n\nMaybe you're not Einstein, but master a skill, and you can look like a genius. Your ability to effortlessly create will seem like magic.  And there are many skills you can master.  Baking delicious artisan loaves of bread, welding, car repair, plumbing, bricklaying, computer programming, landscaping, and any other skill, once mastered, makes you look like a genius.  And people pay money for genius.\n\n\"Dumb\" people can set the world on fire (in a good way) by focusing on building skills. (I know, I used the word \"dumb\". Stop wincing. I saved you from having to read \"less-than-smart\" or some other BS word kludge for the rest of the article.)\n\nIf you know you're not MIT material but have a passion for cars, go learn everything you can about cars by taking them apart, building them and fixing them.  Get your skills on. Learn everything you can. The world will pay you for your skills. And plenty of money is always available for skilled people. Some mechanics earn more than some college professors, and many car dealers earn more than doctors. Skills make you seem smart.\n\n**What if you are smart?** Smart people should take a humble pill. Yeah, you're smart, but understand that smart is not a skill. You don't want to read a book about lion taming and then immediately jump in a cage with a lion. Build your skills, in a safe environment and be ready to fail. Failure is a part of the process. Noone likes failing, but it builds skill. People are more accepting of failure when they see themselves learning from it. You don't have to like the punch in the face, but a bloody nose heals and also reminds you to move out of the way next time. Failure is a great skill builder.\n\nOne more thing about skill building. The quality of your skill is proportional to the breadth and depth of your experiences. Some people assume they have ten years of experience when they only have *one year repeated ten times.* Being skilled means your knowledge is current and you are continually exploring, learning, and growing. \n\n**Why did I write this?** I see too many smart people quitting when the first failure kicks them a little too hard. And I also see too many \"dumb\" people not trying because they believe they're not smart enough. People need to try.  We're all better off when all people work to do great things. If you have an idea, do it. Doing is the best way to chase success.
