The source of energy for evaporation is primarily solar radiation;\n\n2) Condensation - the transformation of water vapor to liquid water droplets in the air, creating clouds and fog;\n\n3) Precipitation - condensed water vapor that falls to the Earth's surface. Most precipitation occurs as rain; but also includes snow, hail, fog drip, graupel (soft hail or snow pellets), sleet, and frozen rain;\n\nApproximately 505,000 km3 (121,000 cu mi) of water falls as precipitation each year, 398,000 km3 (95,000 cu mi) of it over the oceans;\n\nThe rain on land contains 107,000 km3 (26,000 cu mi) of water per year and a snowing only 1,000 km3(240 cu mi); 78% of global precipitation occurs over the ocean;\n\n4) Infiltration - the flow of water from the ground surface into the ground. Once infiltrated, the water becomes soil moisture or groundwater. A recent global study using water stable isotopes, however, shows that not all soil moisture is equally available for groundwater recharge or for plant transpiration;\n\n5) Surface runoff - the variety of ways by which water moves across the land. This includes both surface runoff and channel runoff. As it flows, the water may seep into the ground, evaporate into the air, become stored in lakes or reservoirs, or be extracted for agricultural or other human uses;\n\n6) Subsurface flow - the flow of water underground, in the vadose zone and aquifers. Subsurface water may return to the surface, e.g. as a spring or by being pumped, or eventually seep into the oceans;\n\nWater returns to the land surface at lower elevation than where it infiltrated, under the force of gravity or gravity induced pressures. When water evaporates, it takes up energy from its surroundings and cools the environment. When it condenses, it releases energy and warms the environment. These heat exchanges influence climate.\n\nThe evaporative phase of the cycle purifies water which then replenishes the land with freshwater. The flow of liquid water and ice transports minerals across the globe. Water evaporates as water vapor into the air. Ice and snow can sublimate directly into water vapor.\n\nEvpotranspiration is water transpired from plants and evaporated from the soil. The water vapor molecule H2O has less density compared to the major components of the atmosphere, nitrogen and oxygen, N2 and O2.\n\nDue to the significant difference in molecular mass, water vapor in gas form gains height in open air as a result of buoyancy. However, as altitude increases, air pressure decreases and the temperature drops.\n\nThe lowered temperature causes water vapor to condense into a tiny liquid water droplet which is heavier than the air, such that it falls unless supported by an updraft.\n\nA huge concentration of these droplets over a large space up in the atmosphere becomes visible as clouds. Fog is formed if the water vapor condenses near ground level, as a result of moist air and cool air collision or an abrupt reduction in air pressure.\n\nAir currents move water vapor around the globe, cloud particles collide, grow, and fall out of the upper atmospheric layers as precipitation.\n\nSome precipitation falls as snow or hail, sleet, and can accumulate as ice caps and glaciers; which can store frozen water for thousands of years. Most water falls back into the oceans or onto land as rain, where the water flows over the ground as surface runoff.\n\nA portion of runoff enters rivers in valleys in the landscape, with streamflow moving water towards the oceans. Runoff and water emerging from the ground (or groundwater) may be stored as freshwater in lakes.\n\nNot all runoff flows into rivers, much of it soaks into the ground as infiltration. Some water infiltrates deep into the ground and replenishes aquifers, which can store freshwater for long periods of time. \nSome infiltration stays close to the land surface and can seep back into surface-water bodies (and the ocean) as groundwater discharge. Some groundwater finds openings in the land surface and comes out as freshwater springs.\n\nIn river valleys and floodplains, there is often continuous water exchange between surface water and ground water in the hyporheic zone. It is a measure of the average age of the water in that reservoir.\n\nGroundwater can spend over 10,000 years beneath Earth's surface before leaving. Particularly old groundwater is called “fossil water”.\n\nWater stored in the soil remains there very briefly, because it is spread thinly across the Earth, and is readily lost by evaporation, transpiration, stream flow, or groundwater recharge.\n\nAfter evaporating, the residence time in the atmosphere is about 9 days before condensing and falling to the Earth as precipitation.\n\nThe major ice sheets - Antarctica and Greenland - store ice for very long periods. Ice from Antarctica has been reliably dated to 800,000 years before present, though the average residence time is shorter.\n\nIn hydrology, residence times can be estimated in two ways. The more common method relies on the principle of “conservation of mass” and assumes the amount of water in a given reservoir is roughly constant.\n\nWith this method, residence times are estimated by dividing the volume of the reservoir by the rate by which water either enters or exits the reservoir.\n\nConceptually, this is equivalent to timing how long it would take the reservoir to become filled from empty if no water were to leave (or how long it would take the reservoir to empty from full if no water were to enter).\n\nAn alternative method to estimate residence times, which is gaining in popularity for dating groundwater, is the use of isotopic techniques. I have ability. I have no hesitation in saying it, as for what purpose should I pretend otherwise.\n\nSo great circumvention, and so great depreciation, in speaking of the gifts one has, seems to me to hide a little vanity under an apparent modesty, and craftily to try to make others believe in greater virtues that are imputed to us.\n\nOn my part I am content not to be considered better-looking than I am, nor of a better temper than I describe, nor more witty and clever than I am.\n\nThe conversation of gentlemen is one of the pleasures that most amuses me. I am hardly ever seen in a rage, and I never hated anyone.\n\nI am not, however, incapable of avenging myself if I have been offended, or if my honor demanded I should resent an insult put upon me; on the contrary, I feel clear that duty would so well discharge the office of hatred in me that I should follow my revenge with even greater keenness than other people.\n\nAmbition does not weary me. I fear but few things, and I do not fear death in the least. I am but little given to pity, and I could wish I was not so at all.\n\nThough there is nothing I would not do to comfort an afflicted person, and I really believe that one should do all one can to show great sympathy to him for his misfortune, for miserable people are so foolish that this does them the greatest good in the world; yet I also hold that we should be content with expressing sympathy, and carefully avoid having any.\n\nIt is a passion that is wholly worthless in a well-regulated mind, which only serves to weaken the heart, and which should be left to ordinary persons, who, as they never do anything from reason, have need of passions to stimulate their actions.\n\nI love my friends; and I love them to such an extent that I would not for a moment weigh my interest against theirs. I condescend to them, I patiently endure their bad temper. I am very secretive, and I have less difficulty than most men in holding my tongue as to what is told me in confidence.\n\nI am most particular as to my word, and I would never fail, whatever might be the consequence, to do what I had promised; and I have made this an inflexible law during the whole of my life.\n\nI keep the most punctilious civility to women. Whatever discoveries have been made in the region of self-love, there remain many unexplored territories there. Self-love is more cunning than the most cunning man in the world.\n\nThe duration of our passions is no more dependent upon us than the duration of our life. Passion often renders the most clever man a fool, and even sometimes renders the most foolish man clever.\n\nGreat and striking actions which dazzle the eyes are represented by politicians as the effect of great designs, instead of which they are commonly caused by the temper and the passions. Thus, wars set down to the ambition they entertained of making themselves masters of the world, was probably but an effect of jealousy.\n\nThe passions are the only advocates which always persuade. They are a natural art, the rules of which are infallible; and the simplest man with passion will be more persuasive than the most eloquent without.\n\nThe passions possess a certain injustice and self-interest which makes it dangerous to follow them, and in reality we should distrust them even when they appear most trustworthy.\n\nIn the human heart there is a perpetual generation of passions; so that the ruin of one is almost always the foundation of another.\n\nPassions often produce their contraries: avarice sometimes leads to prodigality, and prodigality to avarice; we are often obstinate through weakness and daring though timidity; thus, whatever care we take to conceal our passions under the appearances of piety and honor, they are always to be seen through these veils.\n\nMen are not only prone to forget benefits and injuries; they even hate those who have obliged them, and cease to hate those who have injured them. The necessity of revenging an injury or of recompensing a benefit seems a slavery to which they are unwilling to submit.\n\nThis clemency of which they make a merit, arises oftentimes from vanity, sometimes from idleness, oftentimes from fear, and almost always from all three combined.\n\nThe moderation of those who are happy arises from the calm which good fortune bestows upon their temper.\n\nModeration is caused by the fear of exciting the envy and contempt which those merit who are intoxicated with their good fortune; it is a vain display of our strength of mind; and in short, the moderation of men at their greatest height is only a desire to appear greater than their fortune.\n\nWe have all sufficient strength to support the misfortunes of others. The constancy of the wise is only the talent of concealing the agitation of their hearts.\n\nThose who are condemned to death affect sometimes a constancy and contempt for death which is only the fear of facing it; so that one may say that this constancy and contempt are to their mind what the bandage is to their eyes.\n\nPhilosophy triumphs easily over past evils and future evils; but present evils triumph over it. Few people know death, we only endure it, usually from determination, and even from stupidity and custom; and most men only die because they know not how to prevent dying.\n\nWhen great men permit themselves to be cast down by the continuance of misfortune, they show us that they were only sustained by ambition, and not by their mind; so that PLUS a great vanity, heroes are made like other men.\n\nWe need greater virtues to sustain good than evil fortune. Neither the sun nor death can be looked at without winking.\n\nPeople are often vain of their passions, even of the worst, but envy is a passion so timid and shame-faced that no one ever dare avow her.\n\nJealousy is in a manner just and reasonable, as it tends to preserve a good which belongs, or which we believe belongs to us, on the other hand envy is a fury which cannot endure the happiness of others.\n\nThe evil that we do does not attract to us so much persecution and hatred as our good qualities. We have more strength than will; and it is often merely for an excuse we say things are impossible.\n\nIf we had no faults we should not take so much pleasure in noting those of others. Jealousy lives upon doubt; and comes to an end or becomes a fury as soon as it passes from doubt to certainty.\n\nPride indemnifies itself and loses nothing even when it casts away vanity. If we had no pride, we should not complain of that of others. Pride is much the same in all men, the only difference is the method and manner of showing it.\n\nIt would seem that nature, which has so wisely ordered the organs of our body for our happiness, has also given us pride to spare us the mortification of knowing our imperfections.\n\nPride has a larger part than goodness in our remonstrance with those who commit faults, and we reprove them not so much to correct as to persuade them that we ourselves are free from faults.\n\nWe promise according to our hopes; we perform according to our fears. Interest speaks all sorts of tongues and plays all sorts of characters; even that of disinterestedness. Interest blinds some and makes some see.\n\nThose who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things. We have not enough strength to follow all our reason.\n\nA man often believes himself leader when he is led; as his mind endeavors to reach one goal, his heart insensibly drags him towards another. Strength and weakness of mind are misnamed; they are really only the good or happy arrangement of our bodily organs. The caprice of our temper is even more whimsical than that of fortune.\n\nThe attachment or indifference which philosophers have shown to life is only the style of their self-love, about which we can no more dispute than of that of the palate or of the choice of colors.\n\nOur temper sets a price upon every gift that we receive from fortune. Happiness is in the taste, and not in the things themselves; we are happy from possessing what we like, not from possessing what others like. We are never so happy or so unhappy as we suppose.\n\nThose who think they have merit persuade themselves that they are honored by being unhappy, in order to persuade others and themselves that they are worthy to be the butt of fortune. Nothing should so much diminish the satisfaction which we feel with ourselves as seeing that we disapprove at one time of that which we approve of at another.\n\nWhatever difference there appears in our fortunes, there is nevertheless a certain compensation of good and evil which renders them equal. Whatever great advantages nature may give, it is not she alone, but fortune also that makes the hero.\n\nThe contempt of riches in philosophers was only a hidden desire to avenge their merit upon the injustice of fortune, by despising the very goods of which fortune had deprived them; it was a secret to guard themselves against the degradation of poverty, it was a back way by which to arrive at that distinction which they could not gain by riches.\n\nThe hate of favorites is only a love of favor. The envy of NOT possessing it, consoles and softens its regrets by the contempt it evinces for those who possess it, and we refuse them our homage, not being able to detract from them what attracts that of the rest of the world.\n\nTo establish ourselves in the world, we do everything to appear as if we were established. Although men flatter themselves with their great actions, they are not so often the result of a great design as of chance.\n\nIt would seem that our actions have lucky or unlucky stars to which they owe a great part of the blame or praise which is given them. There are no accidents so unfortunate from which skillful men will not draw some advantage, nor so fortunate that foolish men will not turn them to their hurt.\n\nFortune turns all things to the advantage of those on whom she smiles. The happiness or unhappiness of men depends no less upon their dispositions than their fortunes.\n\nSincerity is an openness of heart; we find it in very few people; what we usually see is only an artful dissimulation to win the confidence of others.\n\nThe aversion to lying is often a hidden ambition to render our words credible and weighty, and to attach a religious aspect to our conversation. There is real love just as there are real ghosts; every person speaks of it, few persons have seen it.\n\nLove lends its name to an infinite number of engagements which are attributed to it; the love of justice is simply in the majority of men with the fear of suffering injustice.\n\nSilence is the best resolve for him who distrusts himself. What renders us so changeable in our friendship is, that it is difficult to know the qualities of the soul, but easy to know those of the mind.\n\nWe can love nothing but what agrees with us, and we can only follow our taste or our pleasure when we prefer our friends to ourselves; nevertheless it is only by that preference that friendship can be true and perfect.\n\nReconciliation with our enemies is but a desire to better our condition, a weariness of war, the fear of some unlucky accident. What men term friendship is merely a partnership with a collection of reciprocal interests, and an exchange of favors — in fact, it is but a trade in which self-love always expects to gain something.\n\nIt is more disgraceful to distrust than to be deceived by our friends. We often persuade ourselves to love people who are more powerful than we are, yet interest alone produces our friendship; we do not give our hearts away for the good we wish to do, but for that we expect to receive.\n\nOur distrust of another justifies his deceit. Men would not live long in society where they not the dupes of each other.\n\nSelf-love increases or diminishes for us the good qualities of our friends, in proportion to the satisfaction we feel with them, and we judge of their merit by the manner in which they act towards us.\n\nEveryone blames his memory, no one blames his judgment. In the intercourse of life, we please more by our faults than by our good qualities. The only thing constant in life is change.\n\nThe largest ambition has the least appearance of ambition when it meets with an absolute impossibility in compassing its object.\n\nTo awaken a man who is deceived as to his own merit is to do him as bad a turn as that done to the madman who was happy in believing that all the ships touching at the port belonged to him.\n\nOld men delight in giving good advice as a consolation for the fact that they can no longer set bad examples. Great names degrade instead of elevating those who know not how to sustain them.\n\nThe test of extraordinary merit is to see those who envy it the most yet obliged to praise it. A man is perhaps ungrateful, but often less chargeable with ingratitude than his benefactor is.\n\nWe are deceived if we think that mind and judgment are two different matters: judgment is but the extent of the light of the mind. This light penetrates to the bottom of matters; it remarks all that can be remarked, and perceives what appears imperceptible. Therefore, we must agree that it is the extent of the light in the mind that produces all the effects which we attribute to judgment.\n\nEveryone praises his heart, none dare praise their understanding. Politeness of mind consists in thinking chaste and refined thoughts.
