| body | https://media.giphy.com/media/8PEfR87sXkpcpCXKop/giphy.gif
Gif by [Alex Boya](https://giphy.com/alexboya)

**Abstract**
An assessment of a thought experiment exploring public history blogging on a cryptocurrency platform. Participants included graduate school students at Temple University, in Philadelphia. The cohort blogged on Steemit as a proof of concept for blockchain tools to be included in the digital strategies of arts and culture non-profits. The experiment proved inconclusive due to time constraints and misaligned funding priorities.
**Introduction**
What does a [graduate level course in public history and urban topics](https://steemit.com/publichistory/@phillyhistory/deciding-where-the-funds-should-go-to-strengthen-public-history) in non-profit ecosystems have to do with crypto currency and blogging? That's what @phillyhistory set out to discover in the spring of 2018. Together we explored topics from a century ago, aspects of public history and public trust, and the impact of technology, identity politics, and economics on the non-profit sector of the United States. This entire process was then charted on the Steemit blogging platform to model how posts about non-profit related culture and arts topics can generate cryptocurrency value that can over time be leveraged for other means.
**Method**
Each week we were required to post twice around a variety of topics. The 15 or so users in our cohort then pooled our earnings by transferring our SD to @phillyhistory where they would eventually be dispersed to an appropriate 501 c3 non-profit with a Steemit account. After four months the cohort would allocate the funds to an appropriate recipient determined by the [structure put forth here](https://steemit.com/philanthropy/@phillyhistory/our-plan-to-give-away-3-000-steem-criteria-x-capacity-cultural-capital) by the cohort.
**Background**
In an effort to shake up the routine and introduce students to emerging technologies and structures of content @kenfinkel introduced the blockchain blogging platform Steemit to two Temple University graduate courses in [Spring 2018](https://steemit.com/explore1918/@phillyhistory/philadelphia-has-the-street-cred-to-host-a-course-exploring-history-empowering-education-and-endowing-meaning). The project was also incubated by @sndbox who acted as sponsoring whales, upvoting our posts, and providing additional support.
**Results & Analysis**
- **Scope Management:** Assuming that the value of Steem would rise and we would have the equivalent of $30,000 of funds to dispense was hopeful, at best. The equivalent of roughly $7,000 that we eventually amassed would now go to *maybe* one organization ***if*** we could select/find one. Picking "the most deserving" non-profit to allocate our funds to was the most distracting and time consuming part of the experiment. Had an organization like the [Wagner Free Institute](http://www.wagnerfreeinstitute.org/) been selected from the outset, there would have been more focus and success in terms of non-profit cryptocurrency (aka Steeemit) adoption. - **Time Management:** Is four months a long enough period of time to conduct this experiment? Did we need 12 months to accrue enough SD and build our audience? Is 2 posts a week too little to earn SD? Would we have been better served to contact potential recipient organizations earlier in the process rather than 2 months into our experiment? Once we reached out to non-profit orgs. did we give them enough time and information to make an informed decision? How we managed time throughout this process added a layer of uncertainty to the results. - **Audience:** The word crypto currency scares people and or confuses them. We saw this among classmates and most of the non-profit organizations that we approached with this project. Uncertainty intimidates people as do disruptive technologies, and both of these factors were in play here. Writing for the web is also a specific type of endeavor and maybe that impacted the number of upvotes. From generating meaningful content to finding the right partners to leverage our work, the different rhythms of each participant made the choreography of the experiment a bit choppy. - **Platform considerations:** Steemit is better than Blackboard, Moodle or Canvass which are the standard academic classroom management tools. Steemit took the classroom dynamic from the behind the walled garden and made it a fishbowl for the entire community to see into, if they found our work interesting. I like the idea of people learning from *our* process of learning. Rather than just our classmates gaining some insight, we now have contributed to a larger thread of thought and interaction. ***Steemit provides better transparency than the traditional LMS.*** However, as noted in [many other](https://steemit.com/fundraising/@cheider/that-s-a-wrap-philly5151-project-review) posts, the GUI and overall UX is pretty clunky.
**Conclusion**
In some ways the money aspects of the project hijacked the process. We spent more time figuring out who to give "our play money" to and discussing the ethics of our project than really pushing the experiment further. I agree whole heartedly with @connellgregg that a [more collaborative approach and one longer in timespan](https://steemit.com/explore1918/@connellgregg/potential-collaboration-and-future-cryptocurrency-courses) would enhance the project impact immensely. Also the role of incubator and Steemit whale, @sndbox, was instrumental to this endeavor. Without their upvotes our posts would have had less valuation. Their participation was essential. Overall, I found this experiment in digital humanities to be quite illuminating. Not only do I now have a better understanding of cryptocurrencies in action, I also have a wider perspective about how a blockchain structure can impact a variety of different sectors and mediums. Through the Steemit feed (and slack) I was able to keep up with peers' posts to gain a wider perspective of our experiment. The collaborative nature and experimental tone of the process made for an overall enjoyable user experience.
Hat tip to @cheider for the idea and the link to this [lab report template](http://guides.temple.edu/physics2796/labs).
100% of the SBD rewards from this #explore1918 post will support the Philadelphia History Initiative @phillyhistory. | title | Wishful Thinking: What I would do if I had a lot of $$$ to give away |
| body | https://media.giphy.com/media/YYnbND6NevLHi/giphy.gif
Clip from the Richard Pryor film, [Brewster's Millions](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088850/?ref_=nv_sr_1)
Growing up with the film, Brewster's Million's taught me to avoid large sums of cash. At a young age I learned that a bounty of bucks only leads to disgrace and pointless political campaigns (Oh, how the times have changed). So when faced with a hypothetical question like how and where would I dispense $10,000; $100,000; $1,000,000: $10,000,000 to have maximum impact, my impulse is to be cynical about the actual impact of those funds. Who is measuring said impact? Public opinion or a select elite few? How is the impact measured? By increased revenue, larger audiences, SEO or some futuristic metric we haven't found useful yet? Is this a trap like Brewster's Millions? https://media.giphy.com/media/waZ5FYjiKxi5G/giphy.gif As a purely subjective endeavor, I offer my fantasy givings as of today. These suggestions reflect my current whims and would surely change within a few months or years. I imagine gameifying the philanthropic scenario, where a player could give to any facet of a society and then the game would speed up time to see the effects/impact would be quite helpful here. Like Farmville and Civilizations with a 501 C3 twist, the game could help us envision how our money can effect change in society. The European version of the game would have different plugins for added government funding. But since our fantasy game can only play out via Steemit post, and I can't actually see into the future to determine if the impact is meaningful, this entire scenario feels a bit onanistic. Nevertheless, if I had to dispense $10,000; $100,000; $1,000,000: and $10,000,000 to have maximum impact I would do the following: - **A $10,000 donation would go to:** the Temple University [Honors Student Grant Fund](https://honors.temple.edu/honors-student-grant-program). Since 10k sadly, doesn't stretch too far today I think it would be cooler to have a large impact on a few people. With this student grant program, motivated individuals are given the resources to realize their dreams and do cool stuff. Since I have personal connections to the TU Honors program I would want to start doling out money close to home. - **I would rent $100,000 worth:** of ClearChannel billboards along 95 to be used by non-profits in the Philly area to get their messages out to a different audience. Nonprofits can apply to have an image from their collection, a message about their mission, or a call to action displayed for a month. We would rent billboard space to have one image viewed from each direction on 95. The final month before the money runs out we would have a billboard that says: "Rent this space! Support your community!" - **A $1,000,000 donation would go to:** [The Center for Emerging Visual Artists](https://www.cfeva.org/) to spearhead a program dedicated to funding art about public history and community. We need more stuff like [Monument Lab](http://monumentlab.com/). With a million bucks we could offer more grants for artists to work in public spaces to effect social/communal change. Bring art/collections outside of buildings and inform local populations about their home and surroundings. Ideally, the grant would be sustained through interest accrued annually and each year a few grants would be awarded to artists from anywhere wanting to create with the canvass of Philly. - **With $10,000,000 I would invest in**: The urban farming association training and vocational training programs offered at [Metropolis Farms](https://www.metropolisfarmsusa.com/socialresponsibility) in South Philly. I would invest funds to create a program to educate and train local students of all ages in the craft of vertical farming. Trained staff would go into schools to install micro vertical farms with students in their classrooms. If there is enough money we could also offer micro grants to individuals or groups looking to build in their community. Blending [technology](https://www.metropolisfarmsusa.com/technology), agriculture and economics, vertical farming can create [green collar jobs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green-collar_worker), provide healthy foods, and generate commodities for our community. **If you had wads of cash how you would spend it?** 100% of the SBD rewards from this #explore1918 post will support the Philadelphia History Initiative @phillyhistory. This crypto-experiment conducted by graduate courses at Temple University's [Center for Public History](https://sites.temple.edu/centerforpublichistory/) and MLA Program, is exploring history and empowering education. Like Farmville and Civilizations with a 501 C3 twist, the game could help us envision how our money can effect change in society. The European version of the game would have different plugins for added government funding. \n\nBut since our fantasy game can only play out via Steemit post, and I can't actually see into the future to determine if the impact is meaningful, this entire scenario feels a bit onanistic. Nevertheless, if I had to dispense $10,000; $100,000; $1,000,000: and $10,000,000 to have maximum impact I would do the following:\n\n- **A $10,000 donation would go to:** the Temple University [Honors Student Grant Fund](https://honors.temple.edu/honors-student-grant-program). Since 10k sadly, doesn't stretch too far today I think it would be cooler to have a large impact on a few people. With this student grant program, motivated individuals are given the resources to realize their dreams and do cool stuff. Since I have personal connections to the TU Honors program I would want to start doling out money close to home.\n \n- **I would rent $100,000 worth:** of ClearChannel billboards along 95 to be used by non-profits in the Philly area to get their messages out to a different audience. Nonprofits can apply to have an image from their collection, a message about their mission, or a call to action displayed for a month. We would rent billboard space to have one image viewed from each direction on 95. The final month before the money runs out we would have a billboard that says: \"Rent this space! Support your community!\"\n\n- **A $1,000,000 donation would go to:** [The Center for Emerging Visual Artists](https://www.cfeva.org/) to spearhead a program dedicated to funding art about public history and community. We need more stuff like [Monument Lab](http://monumentlab.com/). With a million bucks we could offer more grants for artists to work in public spaces to effect social/communal change. Bring art/collections outside of buildings and inform local populations about their home and surroundings. Ideally, the grant would be sustained through interest accrued annually and each year a few grants would be awarded to artists from anywhere wanting to create with the canvass of Philly.\n\n- **With $10,000,000 I would invest in**: The urban farming association training and vocational training programs offered at [Metropolis Farms](https://www.metropolisfarmsusa.com/socialresponsibility) in South Philly. I would invest funds to create a program to educate and train local students of all ages in the craft of vertical farming. Trained staff would go into schools to install micro vertical farms with students in their classrooms. If there is enough money we could also offer micro grants to individuals or groups looking to build in their community. Blending [technology](https://www.metropolisfarmsusa.com/technology), agriculture and economics, vertical farming can create [green collar jobs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green-collar_worker), provide healthy foods, and generate commodities for our community.\n\n**If you had wads of cash how you would spend it?**\n\n100% of the SBD rewards from this #explore1918 post will support the Philadelphia History Initiative @phillyhistory. I think I will try my hat at this scientific format as well. Thanks for sharing. I agree with your assessments of us being in a liminal period where nonprofits are not properly staffed or ready for this shift. However, just like parenting you're never ready until you do it. And nonprofits generally are not early adopters so they will never be fully ready until there is a ***need***. Nevertheless, our experiment has value in spite o a few constraints. I've a had a blast learning with the whole crew, so as a participant, it's been a very useful and positive UX. |

This crypto-experiment conducted by graduate courses at Temple University's [Center for Public History](https://sites.temple.edu/centerforpublichistory/) and MLA Program, is exploring history and empowering education.
