Lucky are those who have friends they can trust. Friendship is a devoted relationship between two individuals. They both feel immense care and love for each other. Usually, a friendship is shared by two people who have similar interests and feelings.\n\nYou meet many along the way of life but only some stay with you forever. Those are your real friends who stay by your side through thick and thin. Friendship is the most beautiful gift you can present to anyone. It is one which stays with a person forever.\n\nTrue Friendship\nA person is acquainted with many persons in their life. However, the closest ones become our friends. In other words, having a true friend makes our lives easier and full of happiness.\n\nMost importantly, true friendship stands for a relationship free of any judgments. In a true friendship, a person can be themselves completely without the fear of being judged. It makes you feel loved and accepted. This kind of freedom is what every human strives to have in their lives.\n\nIn short, true friendship is what gives us reason to stay strong in life. Having a loving family and all is okay but you also need true friendship to be completely happy. Some people don’t even have families but they have friends who’re like their family only. Your real friends will always motivate you and cheer for you. They will take you on the right path and save you from any evil.\n\nSimilarly, friendship also teaches you a lot about loyalty. It helps us to become loyal and get loyalty in return. There is no greater feeling in the world than having a friend who is loyal to you.\n\nMoreover, friendship makes us stronger. It tests us and helps us grow. For instance, we see how we fight with our friends yet come back together after setting aside our differences. This is what makes us strong and teaches us patience.\n\nTherefore, there is no doubt that best friends help us in our difficulties and bad times of life. They always try to save us in our dangers as well as offer timely advice. I also tried to prepare a cup of tea for him. But there was no milk. I became nervous. I went to our neighbor and borrowed a little milk for only one cup of tea. I thought that I could prepare it. But unconsciously I added salt instead of sugar. When I offered it to my uncle, he gladly accepted it. But immediately he kept-the cup away only after one sips. I could not know the reason at first. I sensed my mistake well when he asked for sugar for the tea. I could not find the tin which contained sugar. So I again rushed to my neighbor for sugar.\n\nAfter the tea, my uncle slept. Probably he thought that my parents would come back soon. He did not get up before 3 P.M. At that time I was very hungry. I felt insulted when I met our neighbor for the third time to arrange a real for my uncle. It was required reading for a women’s literature course I took during my sophomore year of college. I was less than a quarter of the way through the story when I realized that this book was like nothing I had ever read before. I found honesty in its themes, relished the unapologetic determination of its tone, and the voice of its characters felt so familiar and relatable that I came to embrace the author, Zora Neale Hurston and the story’s protagonist, Janie Crawford, as friends, and as mentors.\n\nIn my enthusiasm towards the book, I committed what many avid readers might consider to be an unforgivable act. I “damaged” the book. \n\nThe ideas expressed in this novel left me feeling empowered. Finally, a trustworthy advocate had brought the heart of a beautifully complex and authentic African-American female character—soft and womanly with carefree dreams of wanderlust and romantic love—to the page. As I read—every paragraph I highlighted, every note I wrote in the margins and on post-it-notes, every page I folded down—stood as a testament to this author, in recognition of her audacity to reclaim the femininity of black women and give voice to the side of us seldom portrayed in literature. I was so captivated with Their Eyes Were Watching God that I made it a point to read the book once a year.\n\nHowever, every time I pulled my copy from the shelf I couldn’t help but be plagued by childhood memories of librarians scolding fellow classmates for marking up books. The guilt and shame of it was real. So, I placed the book towards the back of my bookshelf—away from the judgmental eyes of others.\n\nOver a decade later, a very close friend of mine stopped by my New York City apartment for brunch, only hours before she was scheduled to embark on a trip across the United States. She, like me, was an avid reader, so naturally she gravitated towards my bookshelves to assess the literary bounty. After sizing up the aesthetics of the display, she pored over the books—pulling them from their shelves, flipping through their pages, scanning her eyes over their covers and skimming through their descriptions—stopping on occasion to ask, “Can I borrow this for my trip?” or “What did you think of this?”\n\nThen it happened. She paused and gasped in horror as she pulled my copy of TEWWG from the shelf.\n\n“What’s this? Is this what I think it is?” she asked.\n\nI nodded half-heartedly as I watched her shoulders sink—a slow groan escaped from her throat. I braced myself for the lecture I’d been dreading all these years, one to the tune of “You aren’t supposed to damage books!”—but the words never came. She simply turned to me, eyes wide, mouth slightly opened, and then burst into laughter.\n\nAlthough it was the first time my friend had seen my copy of Their Eyes Were Watching God, it wasn’t the first time she had heard about my love for the book and the impact it had on me as a woman and as a reader. That, I suppose, is what spared me from the lecture I knew very well she wanted to give. Instead of seeing my copy of Their Eyes Were Watching God as a desecration of literature, she viewed it as the diary of her friend’s younger self. She read through some of the notes, asking me to elaborate on some of the comments, and she shared with me some of her thoughts and feelings about the book. As the evening came to a close, we hugged and I wished her a happy and safe travels.\n\nTwo weeks later she was back at my doorstep, ready to embark on yet another trip. This time, she was heading back to her home in London after a yearlong stay in the States as an intern. As we sipped countless glasses of wine and laughed over animated tales of her journey across the States, she pulled out a book from her suitcase. “This is for you,” she said as she handed me the book. It was a brand new copy of Their Eyes Were Watching God.\n\nShe explained how affected she had been by my sentiments over the book and that she’d always treasure the passionate conversation that had ensued as we flipped through its pages. She respected the fact that I loved my original copy, but she wanted me to have a pristine copy that could sit at the forefront of my bookshelves, representing its position as one of my all-time favorite reads.\n\nBut most importantly, she wanted me to have a new copy to refer to for my annual readings—one I could view through the eyes of the woman I had grown into—not the woman I used to be. I was speechless and overwhelmed with gratitude that I had managed to attract such a person into my life. And yet another team was working on an even newer version of it. That’s a company that works hard to make itself obsolete.\n\nThe same principle, I believe, applies to individuals. You should improve yourself and make yourself obsolete. Here are some ways to apply it:\n\nUpgrade your tools\nCan you imagine the difference in productivity between those who use a typewriter and those who use a computer? This example is a bit extreme, but it illustrates the importance of upgrading your tools. If you don’t upgrade your tools, you risk being left behind by those who do. They will produce far more output with better quality than you.\n\nBut be careful, don’t spend too much time researching and experimenting with new tools at the expense of doing real work.
