| body | A Few Thoughts Before We Begin: This next part of our journey is something I never thought I would be able to experience. I proposed to the one person who makes me happy no matter what. Before I go into the details of this proposal, I want to tell you a thought I lived with for a long time. This is something I have not shared with many people but it makes this point in my life a little bit more special. Growing up I kind of surrendered to being single for my entire life. I did not see me living much pass my early twenties. I became content with this destiny I formulated in my head and I didn’t think it would be fair to involve another person in this mess. I hate making people feel sad so I did not want someone to get attached to me and then have SMA take me away. The older I became the more I wanted to destroy this formulated destiny. I wanted to beat SMA and I wanted a partner to experience life with. With that being said, I have never really given much thought to how I wanted to propose. Well, I guess most dudes don’t give much thought to this until the opportunity is presented to them. When I knew Virginie was the one that I wanted to keep forever, I started to devise my master proposal plan. In this chapter, I will take you through my entire thought process and the events that took place. Get ready because you are about to witness my romantic side that only Virginie has seen. The Decision: A few months before Virginie was to come visit, we both discussed what was the next step after she visited. As you can imagine, flying from France to the US is not a cheap ticket because of this we made an agreement. The agreement was that if we were madly in love by the third week and she enjoyed Phoenix, I would propose. If she did not like being away from France `and/or me, we would go our separate ways. Luckily, we ended up falling even harder for each other and Virginie absolutely loved all the sun Phoenix had to offer. I knew she was the one after our trip to the mall. I remember whispering to my mother while she was helping me out of our van “ I am going to propose this weekend. She is the one I want and I can’t wait another week and a half to tell her.” I said that to my mother on a Tuesday, the second Tuesday Virginie was here. After some thought, I decided that on Saturday I was going to pop the question. Virginie had no idea I was going to pop the question a week early but I had a feeling she felt the same way about me. Leading up to that Saturday, I kept asking Virginie questions about Phoenix and myself. I wanted to make sure that I was making the right decision and not making her feel rushed. My fear is that she would have said “yes” in the heat of the moment or because she wanted to be polite. If I had felt any hesitation in her answers, I would have postponed my decision. During that week of questioning, I realized that we both wanted the same thing and I was making the correct decision to ask her to marry me. The Plan: The months prior to Virginie coming to visit, I started to think of special places that I could propose to her. I honestly did not have many in mind but there was one place that kept recurring to me. The “LOVE” sign in Old Town Scottsdale, this is a place I have always enjoyed and it is iconic to the surrounding area. Not only that, it was also right next to a beautiful library. One thing that Virginie almost loves more than me, is books. This spot was the perfect place to create a lifelong memory and I could use the library as an excuse to take her there. The plan was set! I would tell Virginie we would be going to Old Town Scottsdale on Saturday evening to do some touristy stuff and stop by the library. Afterward, we would find a nice restaurant to finish the night off at. Saturday was here and I was confident in the plan that I devised in my head. Virginie had no idea about what was going to happen because of the day before I told her that I would propose on her birthday, to make it extra special. Surprisingly, I was not nervous at all, I knew this is what I wanted. Virginie was the one and nothing was ever going to change that. Getting Ready For The Night Ahead: We started this day much like the days prior, slowly waking up while enjoying our coffee and watching some show on Netflix. Virginie and I decided not to rush to get dressed up and do an activity during the day because we knew we were going to have a busy evening. This worked in my favor because of how easily tired I get. Virginie was very understanding of my limited strength and would always remind me to take it easy. For someone who had not been around a person with SMA much, she sure did understand it well. I usually try to hide my struggles but she could see right through me. Our lazy day was quickly ending and it was now time for us to get dressed up for our night on the town. Well… I should not say dressed up because we definitely dressed for comfort. Virginie had on her active wear and I wore the usual t-shirt and shorts combo that I have become so accustomed too. She definitely looked a lot prettier than me but like Virginie always says, “you are just being biased!” I might be a little bias but it isn’t hurting anything. While Virginie was doing last minute touch-ups in the bathroom, I had my mother quickly hide the engagement ring inside my inhaler box. This way Virginie would have no reason to look inside of it unless I asked for it. I thought it was pretty clever but I don’t think Virginie did. You will find out why a little later. Old Town Scottsdale: As we made our way to Old Town Scottsdale, I showed Virginie where I used to live. Living in Old Town was a memorable time in my life so I had a lot of stories to share with her. From the time I tipped my power wheelchair for the first time in my life to getting into teenage mischief with my friends. While sharing all of this with Virginie, I realized I somewhat missed living over here. It made me even happier with my decision to create another life-long memory here. We were dropped off just outside of Old Town because finding accessible parking on a Saturday evening would have been a headache. One thing that Virginie and I both liked doing was walking so having to walk a little further was welcomed. Upon entering into Old Town we headed towards Main Street because Virginie wanted to do a bit of souvenir shopping. No place better than Old Town Scottsdale to get the best Arizona themed souvenirs. We went in and out of the many western stores that lined the street. After going into a couple, you start to realize they all sell the same thing but it was still entertaining for the both of us. It gave Virginie a real feeling of how she perceived the wild west. Cowboy and Indian treasures everywhere she set her eyes. The Nerves Set In: It was starting to get around the time all the shops were closing up. We hit one last shop near the park we had to walk through to get to the library which happened to be next to the “LOVE” sign. Virginie quickly went around the shop while I stared aimlessly at the miniature statues on display, thinking about what I was about to do. I wouldn’t say I felt nervous but it was definitely the only thing I could think about. I am actually surprised I did not give away what I was about to do to Virginie. She is usually really good at catching on if something isn’t right even when we’re chatting from halfway around the world. Virginie finished up her little shopping trip and now it was time for us to make our way towards the library. In order to get there from where we were located, we had to cross through this pathway which also acted like a park. I had not been on this pathway in ages and I forgot how beautiful it was. Green grass, brick walkway, and amazing little fountains the entire way through. This made me feel even better about my decision to pick this place to propose to Virginie. On our journey through this pathway, we saw quite a few photos shoots happening. They were mostly maternity shoots with a couple engagement and bridal shoots scattered around. It seemed like I was not the only one with the idea of creating a special memory but that did not make me question my decision. I was still thrilled for what I was about to do and the time was almost here. LOVE Is Near: We started to get to the end of the pathway and out of the corner of my eye, I saw it, the “LOVE” sign. My throat immediately went dry and felt tight. My heart felt like it was going a million miles per hour. It was like all my nerves suddenly hit me at mach seven. I honestly have never felt such a sudden change in my mental state like that. For the record, I have panic disorder so this was some serious feelers happening. Virginie did not notice the sign as quickly as I did which is understandable. I pointed it out and said, “let’s go over there for a second.” There was one minor dilemma, a wedding party was doing a photo shoot in front of it and it looked like it was going to take some time to finish. Instead, we decided to go sit by the pond to chat a little bit and enjoy our surroundings. The problem was I could barely concentrate enough to put together coherent sentences. It was time. While studdering and acting like I was short of breath, I asked Virginie if she could get me my inhaler. Virginie’s face went white with pure fear that something was about to happen to me. She knows about my breathing problems and has experienced them first hand. Seeing me struggle to breath is absolutely terrifying to her. “Don’t worry Virginie, I am just having a little trouble,” I said to her trying to calm her nerves. She sifted through my bag trying to grab my inhaler. I heard her hand grip on to the box and slide open the top. The ring swiftly slid from the box to her hand and then everything went quiet. It took Virginie a couple of seconds to process what had just happened. Virginie came around to the front of me and I looked her in the eyes and asked: “will you marry me, Virginie?” “Yes, of course, I will!” She said this and instantly her pale skin turned bright red with little drops forming in her eyes. I could tell that her nervousness had faded into joy and relief. We did not say much for the next few minutes because we were just processing the events which had just taken place. The best way that I can explain the feeling is pure blissfulness. Realization: We sat and looked out towards the pond, not saying much but speaking with emotions. The events that had just transpired created a very surreal moment for us. We met over a year ago we zero intent of creating a relationship and here we are now engaged. All the frustration of being so far from each other, all the months of waiting and all hurdles we faced. It all culminated in this single moment and I think it was hard for us to formulate a conversation. It felt right to just sit there with each other and speak with our actions. Once our minds returned to reality and we could harness the moment, it was time for us to figure out what to do next. After a few minutes had passed, I asked Virginie if she would like to see the library before it closes. With a huge smile and freshly teared eyes, she said yes. We got our footing and resumed our journey towards the library with our hearts feeling warm. Visiting The Library: The Scottsdale public library is quite beautiful. Virginie and I would often stop to take pictures of the statues which are scattered around the entrance. We also admired all the desert vegetation which lined the outside of the library. Once in the library, Virginie turned into a bookworm, her natural form. She went up and down the aisles feeling the backs of the books. When she would stumble across a book she was interested in, she would write it down in the note section of her phone. It was amusing to watch someone get so excited about books in a library. I am usually not a huge fan of the library but this visit was entertaining. On our way out, we stopped by the used books for sale. We did not have much time before the library closed but that did not stop Virginie. She went through all the books with haste and found some books that she wanted. Books make her so happy which makes me happy. Hunger Was Calling: Our stomachs were starting to call out for dinner by this time. With the excitement that happened in the previous hours, we barely noticed our hunger growing. We had a large selection of places we could eat in Old Town Scottsdale. After a back and forth discussion of what we wanted to eat, Virginie and I decided on a nice juicy burger. Nothing more American than that! When we arrived back onto Main Street, I asked one of the bicycle cab drivers where his favorite burger place is. He listed off a few but gave a place called Karsen’s Grill a raving review. It was set, we were going to Karsen’s Grill! It sounded delicious and it was not too far from where we were located. Which was a bonus because we had been doing quite a bit of walking by this point in our little journey out. Arriving at Karsen’s Grill, we realized it was fairly empty which was not odd given that it was still early in the evening. It was actually quite convenient because the place was small, especially for a wheelchair. The menu at Karsen’s Grill was short and simple, I like when restaurants do that because it makes me feel confident that the food will be good. With that being said, Virginie went with some type of South-Western style burger with Sweet Potato Fries and I wanted to try their Green Chili Mac ‘n’ Cheese. Now, we must talk about these Fries! I usually hate Sweet Potato anything but these fries were insanely good. So crispy with the perfect amount of sweet and salty. I still think about these fries because they were so good. Virginie also feels the same way about these glorious Sweet Potato Fries. Virginie and I both shared our meals with each other so we could get the most out of dinner. Her burger was cooked perfectly and it had just enough spiciness to it. My Mac ‘n’ Cheese was the right consistency with a little kick in the back of the throat. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and Virginie and I would love to come visit again. After our dinner, we only had one thing left to do before we called it quits for the night. I wanted to take Virginie to a famous dessert place we have in Old Town Scottsdale called the Sugar Bowl. I had been to this place a million times and every local Phoenician knows how iconic it is. With that being said, I could not rob Virginie of that experience. Sugar Bowl: We arrived at the 50’s style ice cream parlor and this place was packed. I was somewhat expecting it to be busy but not to the point it was. Thankfully, we did not have to wait too long to be seated. I would tell you exactly what we ordered but I honestly cannot remember. The thing about the Sugar Bowl is that the ice cream isn’t particularly special. It tastes like store-bought ice cream that is always on the verge of melting. The only aspect that keeps this place in business is the history behind. I still love this place but it is hard for me to get excited about it. I don’t think Virginie thought the ice cream was anything special but she did enjoy the atmosphere of the place. While we were at the Sugar Bowl, I did learn something about Virginie. She is exceptionally good at Basketball arcade games. Virginie was sinking shots like a professional! The arcade portion of the Sugar Bowl was probably the best part of going there. Once our time at the Sugar Bowl ended, we were running low on energy. It was time for us to end this special night which we’ll remember forever. We walked through the streets to the outskirts of Old Town Scottsdale where we were picked up to go home. We ended that night much like the previous nights, with our hearts full of love and smiles on our faces. |

Afterward, we would find a nice restaurant to finish the night off at.\n\nSaturday was here and I was confident in the plan that I devised in my head. Virginie had no idea about what was going to happen because of the day before I told her that I would propose on her birthday, to make it extra special. Surprisingly, I was not nervous at all, I knew this is what I wanted. Virginie was the one and nothing was ever going to change that.\n\nGetting Ready For The Night Ahead: \n\nWe started this day much like the days prior, slowly waking up while enjoying our coffee and watching some show on Netflix. I usually try to hide my struggles but she could see right through me.\n\nOur lazy day was quickly ending and it was now time for us to get dressed up for our night on the town. Well… I should not say dressed up because we definitely dressed for comfort. Virginie had on her active wear and I wore the usual t-shirt and shorts combo that I have become so accustomed too. She definitely looked a lot prettier than me but like Virginie always says, “you are just being biased!” I might be a little bias but it isn’t hurting anything.\n\nWhile Virginie was doing last minute touch-ups in the bathroom, I had my mother quickly hide the engagement ring inside my inhaler box. This way Virginie would have no reason to look inside of it unless I asked for it. I thought it was pretty clever but I don’t think Virginie did. You will find out why a little later.\n\nOld Town Scottsdale: \n\nAs we made our way to Old Town Scottsdale, I showed Virginie where I used to live. Living in Old Town was a memorable time in my life so I had a lot of stories to share with her. From the time I tipped my power wheelchair for the first time in my life to getting into teenage mischief with my friends. While sharing all of this with Virginie, I realized I somewhat missed living over here. It made me even happier with my decision to create another life-long memory here.\n\nWe were dropped off just outside of Old Town because finding accessible parking on a Saturday evening would have been a headache. One thing that Virginie and I both liked doing was walking so having to walk a little further was welcomed.\n\nUpon entering into Old Town we headed towards Main Street because Virginie wanted to do a bit of souvenir shopping. Cowboy and Indian treasures everywhere she set her eyes.\n\nThe Nerves Set In: \n\nIt was starting to get around the time all the shops were closing up. She is usually really good at catching on if something isn’t right even when we’re chatting from halfway around the world.\n\nVirginie finished up her little shopping trip and now it was time for us to make our way towards the library. In order to get there from where we were located, we had to cross through this pathway which also acted like a park. I had not been on this pathway in ages and I forgot how beautiful it was. Green grass, brick walkway, and amazing little fountains the entire way through. This made me feel even better about my decision to pick this place to propose to Virginie.\n\nOn our journey through this pathway, we saw quite a few photos shoots happening. They were mostly maternity shoots with a couple engagement and bridal shoots scattered around. It seemed like I was not the only one with the idea of creating a special memory but that did not make me question my decision. I was still thrilled for what I was about to do and the time was almost here.\n\nLOVE Is Near: \n\nWe started to get to the end of the pathway and out of the corner of my eye, I saw it, the “LOVE” sign. My throat immediately went dry and felt tight. My heart felt like it was going a million miles per hour. It was like all my nerves suddenly hit me at mach seven. I honestly have never felt such a sudden change in my mental state like that. For the record, I have panic disorder so this was some serious feelers happening.\n\nVirginie did not notice the sign as quickly as I did which is understandable. It was time.\n\nWhile studdering and acting like I was short of breath, I asked Virginie if she could get me my inhaler. Virginie’s face went white with pure fear that something was about to happen to me. She knows about my breathing problems and has experienced them first hand. Seeing me struggle to breath is absolutely terrifying to her.\n\n“Don’t worry Virginie, I am just having a little trouble,” I said to her trying to calm her nerves. She sifted through my bag trying to grab my inhaler. I heard her hand grip on to the box and slide open the top. The ring swiftly slid from the box to her hand and then everything went quiet. It took Virginie a couple of seconds to process what had just happened. Virginie came around to the front of me and I looked her in the eyes and asked: “will you marry me, Virginie?”\n\n“Yes, of course, I will!” She said this and instantly her pale skin turned bright red with little drops forming in her eyes. I could tell that her nervousness had faded into joy and relief.\n\nWe did not say much for the next few minutes because we were just processing the events which had just taken place. The best way that I can explain the feeling is pure blissfulness.\n\nRealization: \n\n We sat and looked out towards the pond, not saying much but speaking with emotions. It felt right to just sit there with each other and speak with our actions.\n\nOnce our minds returned to reality and we could harness the moment, it was time for us to figure out what to do next. After a few minutes had passed, I asked Virginie if she would like to see the library before it closes. With a huge smile and freshly teared eyes, she said yes. We got our footing and resumed our journey towards the library with our hearts feeling warm.\n\nVisiting The Library: \n\nThe Scottsdale public library is quite beautiful. Virginie and I would often stop to take pictures of the statues which are scattered around the entrance. We also admired all the desert vegetation which lined the outside of the library.\n\nOnce in the library, Virginie turned into a bookworm, her natural form. She went up and down the aisles feeling the backs of the books. When she would stumble across a book she was interested in, she would write it down in the note section of her phone. It was amusing to watch someone get so excited about books in a library. I am usually not a huge fan of the library but this visit was entertaining.\n\nOn our way out, we stopped by the used books for sale. We did not have much time before the library closed but that did not stop Virginie. She went through all the books with haste and found some books that she wanted. Books make her so happy which makes me happy.\n\nHunger Was Calling: \n\nOur stomachs were starting to call out for dinner by this time. With the excitement that happened in the previous hours, we barely noticed our hunger growing. We had a large selection of places we could eat in Old Town Scottsdale. After a back and forth discussion of what we wanted to eat, Virginie and I decided on a nice juicy burger. Nothing more American than that!\n\nWhen we arrived back onto Main Street, I asked one of the bicycle cab drivers where his favorite burger place is. He listed off a few but gave a place called Karsen’s Grill a raving review. It was set, we were going to Karsen’s Grill! It sounded delicious and it was not too far from where we were located. Which was a bonus because we had been doing quite a bit of walking by this point in our little journey out.\n\nArriving at Karsen’s Grill, we realized it was fairly empty which was not odd given that it was still early in the evening. It was actually quite convenient because the place was small, especially for a wheelchair.\n\nThe menu at Karsen’s Grill was short and simple, I like when restaurants do that because it makes me feel confident that the food will be good. With that being said, Virginie went with some type of South-Western style burger with Sweet Potato Fries and I wanted to try their Green Chili Mac ‘n’ Cheese.\n\nNow, we must talk about these Fries! I usually hate Sweet Potato anything but these fries were insanely good. So crispy with the perfect amount of sweet and salty. I still think about these fries because they were so good. Virginie also feels the same way about these glorious Sweet Potato Fries.\n\nVirginie and I both shared our meals with each other so we could get the most out of dinner. Her burger was cooked perfectly and it had just enough spiciness to it. My Mac ‘n’ Cheese was the right consistency with a little kick in the back of the throat. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and Virginie and I would love to come visit again.\n\nAfter our dinner, we only had one thing left to do before we called it quits for the night. I wanted to take Virginie to a famous dessert place we have in Old Town Scottsdale called the Sugar Bowl. I had been to this place a million times and every local Phoenician knows how iconic it is. With that being said, I could not rob Virginie of that experience.\n\nSugar Bowl: \n\nWe arrived at the 50’s style ice cream parlor and this place was packed. I was somewhat expecting it to be busy but not to the point it was. Thankfully, we did not have to wait too long to be seated.\n\nI would tell you exactly what we ordered but I honestly cannot remember. The thing about the Sugar Bowl is that the ice cream isn’t particularly special. It tastes like store-bought ice cream that is always on the verge of melting. The only aspect that keeps this place in business is the history behind. I still love this place but it is hard for me to get excited about it. I don’t think Virginie thought the ice cream was anything special but she did enjoy the atmosphere of the place.\n\n While we were at the Sugar Bowl, I did learn something about Virginie. She is exceptionally good at Basketball arcade games. Virginie was sinking shots like a professional! The arcade portion of the Sugar Bowl was probably the best part of going there.\n\nOnce our time at the Sugar Bowl ended, we were running low on energy. It was time for us to end this special night which we’ll remember forever. We walked through the streets to the outskirts of Old Town Scottsdale where we were picked up to go home.\n\nWe ended that night much like the previous nights, with our hearts full of love and smiles on our faces.",

| body | Scottsdale Fashion Square: I decided that it would be a neat idea to take Virginie to one of Arizona’s largest malls, Scottsdale Fashion Square. Virginie and I watch this series on Youtube called Dead Mall by Dan Bell. This film-maker travels around the US documenting the dying mall industry. While watching this series, Virginie is always stunned by how these huge shopping centers are so vacant. I would always tell her that the mall I grew up going to was still thriving. It was hard for her to believe given how this series painted the industry but I was eager to show her a proper mall. Who knows, maybe Scottsdale Fashion Square will soon become a thing of the past. On the way there, I kept complaining about how difficult it is to find parking because of how busy Fashion Square always is. I figured I should make her first Fashion Square experience proper because parking is usually the biggest deterrent for me. The good news was we were just being dropped off. Starting The Mall Trip Right: Once we arrived, we did like any true Fashion Square shopper would do, we bought Starbucks. When in Scottsdale, act like Scottsdale. While we drank our coffees outside I would tell about my mischievous teenage years loitering at this mall. Virginie was a saint growing up so she thinks I was little over rebellious. To be fair, I did go through a short rebellion period but that did not last long. After giving Virginie a little history lesson of my teenage rebellion, it was time for us to begin out mall adventure. We headed towards the door and one aspect of Fashion Square that has always intrigued me was how luxurious it is. I think Virginie was fairly surprised by it too, given that her only knowledge of American malls comes from the Dead Mall series. Virginie could definitely tell right away that Fashion Square was far from being considered a dead mall. Where to start? We entered the food court and foolishly I asked her “what next? “. I forgot that I was supposed to be the tour guide showing her around. Once she gave me the look of “are you seriously asking me that?”. I quickly started to name off all the stores that I could remember and thought she would like. As soon as the Disney store rolled off my tongue, she immediately lit up and begged to go there first. I warned her that it was very pricey but I was going to rob her of that experience. While making our way towards the Disney store, Virginie was mesmerized by how massive Fashion Square was. I explained to her how Scottsdale Fashion Square was organized. The ground level was mostly dedicated to the food court and a handful of novelty stores. The first level is where you go if you want to spend big money. It has all designer stores such as Michael Kors, Gucci, Coach and so forth. I told her we would probably never be able to afford shopping on that level in this lifetime. The second level which is the top level was nearly all consumer friendly stores. This was the level I would be at the most when I was a teen. Lastly, at the ends of the mall were the flagship stores like Macy’s and Dillards. Now that Virginie had a basic understanding of Fashion Square, I could tell she was starting to feel a little more comfortable. Disney: We arrived at the entrance of the Disney store and Virginie instantly reverted back to her childhood self. She investigated every single inch of the store while oohing and awing over all the neat Disney merchandise. It was like a miniature Disneyland to her. After a little while, Virginie found a mug that she was absolutely infatuated with. It looked like Chip from Beauty and The Beast which happens to be her all-time favorite movie. I could tell she really wanted it but as you can imagine it was expensive. She reluctantly put it back on the shelf but before she could let it go I told her I would purchase it for her. Virginie insisted that I should not buy it for her but after some words, she finally agreed to me buying it for her (She paid me back a little later with tickets to the aquarium). I love seeing Virginie when she is happy and excited. She has this special glow that is so infectious. When Virginie is happy, I am happy. Once our mini Disney adventure ended it was onto one of Virginie’s favorite stores, Claire’s. Until this point in my life, I had never been inside of a Claire’s but that was about to change. We spent a looooong time in there and it wasn’t due to Virginie. Neverending Claire’s: While Virginie was shopping for the cutesy accessories that she loves so much, I noticed that you could get your ears pierced here. Now, I have wanted my ears pierced for well over a decade but I just never pursued it. I bought this up to Virginie and she was all for me getting studs in my ears. I had to promise her one thing though, I would never gauge my ears. Fair enough, I wasn’t a huge fan of that look anyways. I love jewelry, so I was stoked on being able to wear more. Virginie and I went to the front desk and asked for the paperwork to get started on the process. I signed the documents and handed them back. There were a couple people ahead of us getting their ears pierced, so I thought the wait wouldn’t be too bad. Boy, was I very wrong? I swear, we were in Claire’s for what seemed like over an hour. I can’t believe how long it took the workers to shoot a couple of holes in people’s ears. Virginie and I circled that Clairs store more than a dozen times. It was not all bad because Virginie would pick out hair accessories and asked my opinion on them. I enjoyed that part and I am sure she did too. Once our wait ended, it was time for me to man up and get shot in the earlobes. I am making it sound worse than it really was. The lady started on my right ear and all it felt like was a little prick followed by warm pressure. Nothing too bad. The toddlers ahead of me made it seem like it was going to feel like a train running over my ear. I had my tears locked and loaded! My left ear was a little bit more tricky than the right one. For some reason, the gun did not shoot the earring all the way through. This caused me to flinch because I was not prepared for this extra pain. I held my tear back but damn it hurt. The lady apologized, I assured her everything was fine. I officially had the earrings I have wanted for so long now. I’m not going to lie, I felt pretty badass afterward. Virginie and I headed to the checkout to finally leave this place. It was worth it though because I got my ears pierced and a 30% coupon that Virginie was able to redeem. We left Claire’s both with smiles on our faces. Rich Lands: It was getting late in the day and Virginie and I were meeting my brother for dinner later but I had to take her to one last store. This particular store was on the first level so you know what that means. Yep, it was one of the expensive classy stores. The store’s name is… MICHAEL KORS! Virginie is absolutely obsessed with his handbags, I thought she might find a store dedicated to them neat. Once we got to our desired floor I started to feel a bit uncomfortable. The first floor has such a different feeling than the rest of the mall. It is not nearly as busy as the other floors but the shoppers you do see are packin’ some serious cash. I am fairly certain I could not even afford a keychain from a store on this floor. I feel like the shoppers can sense this which makes me feel especially out of place. After a treacherous walk through Rich Lands, we finally arrived at Michael Kors. The look in Virginie’s eyes was priceless. Virginie doesn’t have a very expensive taste nor does she ever want super expensive things but she does LOVE her Michael Kors handbags. She circled that store with so much excitement it almost made me feel bad I could not get her one. Once we left the store, I promised her that she would get a Michael Kors handbag one day. *Spoiler alert, she received one for Christmas(Thanks, Jana and Dan)! Finishing A Long Day: Our day at the mall had finally come to an end, it was one of my more eventful trips to the mall. Both Virginie and I were pretty exhausted but our day was not over quite yet. We still had dinner plans with my brother and his wife. The dinner was a nice way to end the day. We all sat on the patio of the restaurant and enjoyed the beautiful October evening weather. After our meal, we took a little stroll down the road to an ice cream place called Creamistry. Neither Virginie or I had ever had the type of ice-cream they served. It was freshly made right in front of you with some kind of witchcraft. I swear I have never had such amazingly tasty ice-cream, it was so damn creamy. We were a little bummed because both of us decided to share one. I think both of us could have eaten a tub of that witchcraft goodness. With our stomachs stuffed with food aid delightful ice-cream, it was time for us to part ways with my brother and his wife. I can’t lie, Virginie and I were both relieved because we were both extremely tired from our busy day. When we returned home we struggled to get into our pajamas but we somehow managed. After finding something to watch on Netflix, we ended that night much like the previous nights, with our hearts full of love and smiles on our faces. I warned her that it was very pricey but I was going to rob her of that experience.\n\n\nWhile making our way towards the Disney store, Virginie was mesmerized by how massive Fashion Square was. Now that Virginie had a basic understanding of Fashion Square, I could tell she was starting to feel a little more comfortable.\n\nDisney: \n\nWe arrived at the entrance of the Disney store and Virginie instantly reverted back to her childhood self. When Virginie is happy, I am happy.\n\nOnce our mini Disney adventure ended it was onto one of Virginie’s favorite stores, Claire’s. Until this point in my life, I had never been inside of a Claire’s but that was about to change. We spent a looooong time in there and it wasn’t due to Virginie.\n\nNeverending Claire’s: \n\nWhile Virginie was shopping for the cutesy accessories that she loves so much, I noticed that you could get your ears pierced here. I love jewelry, so I was stoked on being able to wear more.\n\nVirginie and I went to the front desk and asked for the paperwork to get started on the process. I enjoyed that part and I am sure she did too.\n\nOnce our wait ended, it was time for me to man up and get shot in the earlobes. I’m not going to lie, I felt pretty badass afterward.\n\nVirginie and I headed to the checkout to finally leave this place. It was worth it though because I got my ears pierced and a 30% coupon that Virginie was able to redeem. We left Claire’s both with smiles on our faces.\n\nRich Lands: \n\nIt was getting late in the day and Virginie and I were meeting my brother for dinner later but I had to take her to one last store. This particular store was on the first level so you know what that means. Yep, it was one of the expensive classy stores. The store’s name is… MICHAEL KORS! Virginie is absolutely obsessed with his handbags, I thought she might find a store dedicated to them neat.\n\nOnce we got to our desired floor I started to feel a bit uncomfortable. The first floor has such a different feeling than the rest of the mall. It is not nearly as busy as the other floors but the shoppers you do see are packin’ some serious cash. I am fairly certain I could not even afford a keychain from a store on this floor. I feel like the shoppers can sense this which makes me feel especially out of place.\n\nAfter a treacherous walk through Rich Lands, we finally arrived at Michael Kors. The look in Virginie’s eyes was priceless. Virginie doesn’t have a very expensive taste nor does she ever want super expensive things but she does LOVE her Michael Kors handbags. She circled that store with so much excitement it almost made me feel bad I could not get her one.\n\nOnce we left the store, I promised her that she would get a Michael Kors handbag one day. *Spoiler alert, she received one for Christmas(Thanks, Jana and Dan)!\n\nFinishing A Long Day: \n\nOur day at the mall had finally come to an end, it was one of my more eventful trips to the mall. Both Virginie and I were pretty exhausted but our day was not over quite yet. We still had dinner plans with my brother and his wife.\n\nThe dinner was a nice way to end the day. I think both of us could have eaten a tub of that witchcraft goodness.\n\nWith our stomachs stuffed with food aid delightful ice-cream, it was time for us to part ways with my brother and his wife. I can’t lie, Virginie and I were both relieved because we were both extremely tired from our busy day.\n\nWhen we returned home we struggled to get into our pajamas but we somehow managed. After finding something to watch on Netflix, we ended that night much like the previous nights, with our hearts full of love and smiles on our faces.\n\nSupport The Blog: \n\nAll funds go towards immigration fees ($1235/$1435). Almost there!",

| body | Our second week together was quite busy with having planned get-togethers, the Phoenix Zoo, and Fashion Square Mall. I am going to skip over the get-togethers because that involves personal information of people outside of Virginie and I. For now, I am going to talk about our Phoenix Zoo adventure and Fashion Square a little later. Phoenix Zoo: Ah, the Phoenix Zoo, a place that I hadn’t visited in well over a decade but it is definitely a tourist destination. I had no idea at what to expect, all I knew was that the Zoo was a pricey adventure. Pricey is an understatement… just to get inside the Zoo it was $40 a piece. I digress, let’s get started! We chose a perfect day to go to the zoo, it was in the mid-80s with a nice breeze. Weather is always important when it comes down to visiting the Phoenix Zoo. Any Phoenician knows all too well that a hot day can ruin even the most fun of outdoors events. We get through the ticket gate and Virginie looks at me with that look of “where do we go?”. I am fairly certain I gave her the same exact look in return. To be frank, I am probably the worst tour guide because I rarely venture outside my little bubble. After staring at each other, looking like two severely confused Pigeons, we finally decided it would be a good idea to look at our guidebook. The Arizona Trail and Manta Ray Tank seemed to be a great starting point. They were right next to us and it seemed to lead into the rest of the park. We ditched our Pigeon facade and began our journey through the animal kingdom. Manta Rays: I was definitely surprised when I saw that the Phoenix Zoo had a place where you could pet Manta Rays. It is not something that comes to mind when you go to a Zoo that is literally in the middle of a Desert nature preserve. In my opinion, once you see one Manta Ray tank, you have seen them all. I was a big fan of SeaWorld when I was younger so I have had my lifetime fill of petting the Rays. Virginie, on the other hand, was absolutely thrilled to put her hand under the water and feel the Rays glide beneath her hand. Whilst she enjoyed this new experience, I was reading the list of facts plastered to the tank. I wish I could tell you all about Manta Ray facts but I am sorry to say I don’t remember a single fact. They have a pointy tail and they killed Steve Irwin, that is the extent of my knowledge of these beautiful creatures. With Virginie’s hand smelling like a bucket of fish, it was time for us to head down the Arizona Trail. I was excited about this little excursion because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to take Virginie all around Arizona and this was a good way for her to get a little taste of how diverse this state is. I can safely say the Arizona Trail delivered on that. Arizona Trail: Seeing all the snakes that inhabit Arizona was something very interesting to me, not so much for Virginie. I am fairly certain it was making her doublethink her decision of coming here. I had to keep reassuring her that in my 23-years of life I have only seen two Rattlesnakes and one Kingsnake in the wild. It did little to ease her. Snakes were not the only thing on the Arizona Trail. The trail had some fantastic species of birds. I was thrilled to see that they had a pair of California Condors because, in my opinion, they are the best part of the Grand Canyon. Since we did not have time to go to the Grand Canyon, this was an excellent way of giving her a little piece of the Grand Canyon viewing experience. The Zoo also offered an in-depth look at how we have brought the California Condors back from the brink of extinction. All around this exhibit was very well put together and I was happy that Virginie could learn a little bit about this magnificent bird. They also had a Bald Eagle which was awesome to show Virginie. Given that it is a huge symbol of the USA and she was visiting from France. I told Virginie that it was way more special to see them in the wild. With us staying in the valley, it was unlikely we’d see a wild one so this was a good alternative. Virginie got a strong dose of Freedom *sarcasm *. The last notable bird we saw was the burrowing owls. I don’t have much to say about these little dudes but it was really neat seeing them. With them being critically endangered and absolutely adorable, it would be a crime to not mention them. Next up was the mammals of Arizona. Surprisingly they did not have many on display when we went. I noticed they were doing renovations of some of the enclosures and this is probably the reason for so many of them missing. It was a real bummer because I was looking forward to seeing the Mexican wolves and some of the hooved creatures we have native to Arizona. We were lucky of enough to see two of my favorites, the Mountain Lion and Bobcat. I love seeing these two big cats because it is so rare to catch a glimpse of them in the wild. In all honesty, it is probably a good thing we don’t see them often. Virginie and I spent entirely too long admiring these majestic beasts. After our admiration faded it was time for us to get off of the Arizona Trail. Safari Ride: The next closest activity to us was the Safari Train ride. We paid the extra $10 at the door in order for us to get a train ticket. I am not going to dedicate much time to this section because it was a legit waste of time and money. While riding on this “train” you can barely see any of the animals. The only good part about it was the facts the driver would spew out during the ride. Virginie and I ended up walking the same path as the train took and it was much more enjoyable. We missed the 4D movie for this disappointment. After our little train ride around the Zoo, we decided to head towards an exhibit that just opened. Dinosaurs In The Desert was the name of it if I recall correctly. Virginie and I saw an advertisement for this on the web and it was really the driving force behind going to the Phoenix Zoo. We are both huge fans of Jurassic Park so this seemed right up our alley. Dinosaurs In The Desert: The Phoenix Zoo did an exceptional job setting up this little adventure back in time. The exhibit was placed on the far side of the zoo, up against a mountain. While walking up towards the entrance of the exhibit you would hear dinosaurs calling out. If you didn’t know better, you would have thought they had live dinosaurs there. Once you go through the entrance, you would follow a dirt path that went up and down a circular hill. Every ten or fifteen yards you would see an animatronic dinosaur poking its head out of a bush. In all honesty, it felt like we were in Jurassic Park: Desert Edition. The dinosaurs would screech and holler at you which would instill a slight bit of fear in you, mixed with a heavy dose of amazement. A few of the dinosaurs would surprise you by spitting cold water at you. I am pretty sure this was Virginie’s favorite part because it was pretty warm out by the time we were at this exhibit. The dinosaur trail did not take too long to complete but it was definitely one of the highlights of our visit. It was fun to entertain our kid-like fascination for dinosaurs. We took pictures of every dinosaur which I will leave below. By this time in our journey through the Phoenix Zoo, we were both getting a little hungry and thirsty. It was my chance to introduce Virginie to some more new foods again. This time I chose Churros and the classic ICEE. Who doesn’t love those two things? Virginie was no exception, the ICEE did just the trick to cool her down during the hot day. The Churro, well you can’t say much bad about those things. It was really fresh, so it was exceptionally tasty! Monkey Village: We finished our little snack and headed for our last exhibit of the day, Monkey Village! I have been to this exhibit before so I was extremely excited to show Virginie this. She absolutely loves Monkeys. One of the very first gifts I gave to Virginie was a stuffed monkey and she never lets that thing out of her sight. Once she figured out that we would be inside the enclosure with the little monkeys, her face lit up like a Christmas tree. Once we arrived at the entrance of the Monkey Village the kind Zookeeper gave us a quick summary of the rules. It was all common sense stuff like don’t touch, don’t run, and stay on the path. It was time for us to enter! The first monkey we saw was one of the newborns. This little guy was heart-melting cute, it almost made me scream like a school-girl. Virginie was just as much stunned by the cuteness as I was. Once we snapped to our normal selves, we continued down the short path. Many monkeys jumped and gilded around us while we looked in amazement. It is pretty surreal to be so close to something that is wild and also closely resembles a human being. In the short time, we were in there, we could get a sense of how their Hierarchy worked. I truly do envy the zookeeper’s that get to work inside the Monkey Village. It would be hard to have a bad day when being surrounded by adorable little monkeys. Virginie and I really had to force ourselves out of the Monkey Village due to the zoo closing soon. I regret not going there earlier because I would have loved to stay a little bit longer. For anyone who has never been to the Phoenix Zoo, I highly recommend that you go just for this exhibit alone. It was well worth the admission price to hang-out with some little monkeys. Finishing Our Day at The Phoenix Zoo: The sun was starting to set and Virginie and I needed to quickly see the last handful of animals. By this point in our journey, there was not anything more to really mention about the Phoenix Zoo. However, I do want to talk about an observation I made while being in the gift shop. The gift shop is seriously a parent’s worst nightmare. Everything is grossly overpriced and a child is bound to want something. I have never in my life seen so many different temper-tantrums as I did that day at the Phoenix Zoo gift shop. I could almost feel how frustrated some of those parents were. Being a parent is one responsibility that I never wish to have. Passing on our last name is definitely up to my brother! After the Phoenix Zoo, Virginie and I were pretty much spent of all our energy. We picked up a pizza on the way home from one of my favorite pizza places and brought it home. I introduced Virginie to dipping her pizza into Ranch that night. Now that she is back in France, every time she eats pizza she feels like something is missing because she doesn’t have access to Ranch. Like I said earlier, I definitely created a bad habit by introducing ranch into Virginie’s life. I am sorry! We finished up our dinner and relaxed for the rest of the evening. We ended the night much like the previous nights, with our hearts full of love and smiles on our faces. All funds go towards immigration fees ($1235/$1435). Almost there! |

I love seeing these two big cats because it is so rare to catch a glimpse of them in the wild. In all honesty, it is probably a good thing we don’t see them often. Virginie and I spent entirely too long admiring these majestic beasts. After our admiration faded it was time for us to get off of the Arizona Trail.\n\nSafari Ride: \n\nThe next closest activity to us was the Safari Train ride. We missed the 4D movie for this disappointment.\n\nAfter our little train ride around the Zoo, we decided to head towards an exhibit that just opened. Dinosaurs In The Desert was the name of it if I recall correctly. Virginie and I saw an advertisement for this on the web and it was really the driving force behind going to the Phoenix Zoo. We are both huge fans of Jurassic Park so this seemed right up our alley.\n\nDinosaurs In The Desert:\n\nThe Phoenix Zoo did an exceptional job setting up this little adventure back in time. The exhibit was placed on the far side of the zoo, up against a mountain. While walking up towards the entrance of the exhibit you would hear dinosaurs calling out. If you didn’t know better, you would have thought they had live dinosaurs there.\n\nOnce you go through the entrance, you would follow a dirt path that went up and down a circular hill. I am pretty sure this was Virginie’s favorite part because it was pretty warm out by the time we were at this exhibit.\n\nThe dinosaur trail did not take too long to complete but it was definitely one of the highlights of our visit. It was fun to entertain our kid-like fascination for dinosaurs. We took pictures of every dinosaur which I will leave below.\n\n\nBy this time in our journey through the Phoenix Zoo, we were both getting a little hungry and thirsty. It was my chance to introduce Virginie to some more new foods again. This time I chose Churros and the classic ICEE. Who doesn’t love those two things? Virginie was no exception, the ICEE did just the trick to cool her down during the hot day. The Churro, well you can’t say much bad about those things. It was really fresh, so it was exceptionally tasty!\n\nMonkey Village:\n\nWe finished our little snack and headed for our last exhibit of the day, Monkey Village! I have been to this exhibit before so I was extremely excited to show Virginie this. She absolutely loves Monkeys. One of the very first gifts I gave to Virginie was a stuffed monkey and she never lets that thing out of her sight. Once she figured out that we would be inside the enclosure with the little monkeys, her face lit up like a Christmas tree.\n\nOnce we arrived at the entrance of the Monkey Village the kind Zookeeper gave us a quick summary of the rules. It would be hard to have a bad day when being surrounded by adorable little monkeys.\n\nVirginie and I really had to force ourselves out of the Monkey Village due to the zoo closing soon. I regret not going there earlier because I would have loved to stay a little bit longer. For anyone who has never been to the Phoenix Zoo, I highly recommend that you go just for this exhibit alone. It was well worth the admission price to hang-out with some little monkeys.\n\nFinishing Our Day at The Phoenix Zoo: \n\nThe sun was starting to set and Virginie and I needed to quickly see the last handful of animals. Passing on our last name is definitely up to my brother!\n\n\nAfter the Phoenix Zoo, Virginie and I were pretty much spent of all our energy. I am sorry!\n\nWe finished up our dinner and relaxed for the rest of the evening. We ended the night much like the previous nights, with our hearts full of love and smiles on our faces.\n\n\nAll funds go towards immigration fees ($1235/$1435). Almost there!",

| body | Hi Steemit, my name is Parker and I have lived with a disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Without going into much detail, this disease hinders my ability to gain muscle. I have been in a wheelchair for about 22 years but I don't let that get me down. I own my own business, I'm engaged to a beautiful lady that I met on Reddit, and I have just the right amount of friends to keep me happy. I am not one to complain much and I am not one to throw politics into people's faces but recently the US government gutted the one thing that protects my rights. On February 15th, 2018 the House of Congress passed H.R. 620: ADA Education and Reform Act of 2017. What does this mean? "The ADA Education and Reform Act aims to crack down on such lawsuits, by amending the existing 1990 law to require a “notice and cure” period. The legislation would require that any person claiming discrimination must first provide written notice, allowing 60 days for an owner to acknowledge receipt of the complaint, plus an additional 120 days before legal action can be initiated. No other civil rights legislation currently on the books contains such a provision. The bill was introduced in January 2017 by Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX2), a member of the House Judiciary Committee where the bill was originally sent. The bill is H.R. 620." TLDR: Businesses can deny me due to my special needs. This bill allows them to drag their feet on making accommodations to better suit the disabled. Now, you might think this is not so bad but this is the beginning of a slippery slope that I don't want to see the US go down. Living with a disability I the US isn't horrible by any stretch of the mind but it is a fight. Throughout my entire life my parents and I have had to fight for just about everything. Hell, I am fighting my insurance right now to get a life-saving drug that cost close to a million dollars but they don't care. In the eyes of insurance companies and some businesses, I am a burden. I can promise you, I AM NOT A BURDEN! I have plenty of stories pertaining to the ADA but this lady on Twitter explained it best. To the 213 Republicans and 12 Democrats that voted yes on this bill: FUCK YOU! I hope you one day will have to feel the damage you have done. "body": "\nHi Steemit, my name is Parker and I have lived with a disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Without going into much detail, this disease hinders my ability to gain muscle. I have been in a wheelchair for about 22 years but I don't let that get me down. I own my own business, I'm engaged to a beautiful lady that I met on Reddit, and I have just the right amount of friends to keep me happy. \n\nI am not one to complain much and I am not one to throw politics into people's faces but recently the US government gutted the one thing that protects my rights. On February 15th, 2018 the House of Congress passed H.R. 620: ADA Education and Reform Act of 2017.\n\nWhat does this mean? \n\n\"The ADA Education and Reform Act aims to crack down on such lawsuits, by amending the existing 1990 law to require a “notice and cure” period.\n\nThe legislation would require that any person claiming discrimination must first provide written notice, allowing 60 days for an owner to acknowledge receipt of the complaint, plus an additional 120 days before legal action can be initiated. No other civil rights legislation currently on the books contains such a provision.\n\nThe bill was introduced in January 2017 by Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX2), a member of the House Judiciary Committee where the bill was originally sent. The bill is H.R. 620.\"\n\nTLDR: Businesses can deny me due to my special needs. This bill allows them to drag their feet on making accommodations to better suit the disabled. \n\nNow, you might think this is not so bad but this is the beginning of a slippery slope that I don't want to see the US go down. \n\nI have plenty of stories pertaining to the ADA but this lady on Twitter explained it best. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo the 213 Republicans and 12 Democrats that voted yes on this bill: FUCK YOU! | body | The next few days after the Harry Potter show was slow with a lot of much needed R&R. We would use the cooler evenings to stroll around the neighborhood and talk about everything under the Sun. We would have debates on the stupidest subjects, like the effect a microwave oven has on the human body. These are the memories that I miss the most when reflecting on her time here. We may not agree on everything but she sure does have an uncanny ability to challenge my point of view and I absolutely love that about her. Virginie never believes me when I tell her she is smarter than me but I honestly believe she is. On one of these debate-filled evening walks we decided to stop by a store I usually dread, Ross Dress For Less. One thing about me is that I despise shopping for clothes in clothing stores. Amazon is a much superior way of shopping for clothes because it is cheaper, faster, and easier. With that being said, I could not possibly deny Virginie an opportunity to experience a staple in my childhood. Little did I know what I was getting myself into. Virginie fell instantly in love with Ross! I knew Virginie liked to shop but I thought she would maybe find Ross a little overwhelming due to the lack of organization. Nope, within five minutes of being there, she looked like a Ross seasoned professional. Flipping through clothes while simultaneously throwing the ones she wanted to try on over my lap. I felt like I was a boyfriend in some type of rom-com movie from the 90s. Having a pile of clothes on me while staring into oblivion trying to keep up with my girlfriend. To be completely honest, I actually enjoyed being in Ross with Virginie. I never in a million years thought I would enjoy my time in that store. It was fun to watch Virginie pick out outfits and give her my opinions. I looked forward to going back to Ross with Virginie and we ended up going quite often during her stay. Even though it has been several months since she returned to France, she still raves about Ross Dress For Less. I have a feeling that when she moves her, I will be spending lots more time in Ross. *This was a short chapter but I promise the next one is going to be a long one. This memory was one that I wanted to share because it probably is one of my most favorite ones. All funds go towards immigration fees ($1035/$1435). |
