      "body": "UNA  CAPILLA  PARA  UNA  VIRGEN\n\t\nAl repasar la historia de Gijón, nos encontramos con un caso curioso: la capilla de la Providencia. ¿Qué se sabe de ella? Apenas nada. En sus orígenes no había fotógrafos que la retratasen y para los fieles era más cómodo acercarse a la  antigua ermita de la Guía e incluso a la de Somio. La Capilla de la Providencia era insignificante.\nPara hablar de su historia hay que recurrir al trabajo fotográfico de Vinck, allá en el año 1924 y al cronista “Pachin de Melas”.\nEl origen de la Capilla de la Providencia se pierde en los anales de la historia, dicen las  crónicas , que la primera Capilla no fue más que una gruta en el acantilado del cabo San Lorenzo, en lo que actualmente conocemos como cabo de la Providencia  y su nombre era Capilla de San Lorenzo del Mar. En su interior se veneraban dos imágenes la de San Lorenzo que fue la que dio nombre al barrio y la de San Rafael pero la erosión causada por la fuerza del mar mino sus cimientos hasta dejarla en ruinas y las imágenes fueron trasladadas a la nueva capilla construida ya tierra adentro.\n\n![image001.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQaDY1NPYofAnwgTVQJwut7oGLcS2YccbWmhwxR3s96wz/image001.jpg)\n \nISLA DE LA TORTUGA\n\n También  hay una leyenda sobre su origen que concuerda en algunos puntos con la historia. Según la tradición la gruta primigenia estaba ocupada por un ermitaño que no sabia rezar pues se dedicaba a la contemplación y que en los días de tormenta decía\n\n\n                                                Barca rota,\n                                              Barca santa…\n                                                     ¡Señor\n                                           Salva sus almas!\n\nEra muy amigo de los marineros que por allí  pescaban, y estos le enseñaron a rezar, y le construyeron una pequeña ermita, encima de la gruta, de la “Isla de la Tortuga”.Después de morir el ermitaño la gruta quedo abandonada y se deterioro. Aun se podían ver los restos de la primera ermita en 1931.\n\nSiendo obispo de Oviedo  el Sr. Sanz y Fores durante la segunda mitad del s.XIX y tras la desaparición de la primera ermita se construye una nueva  en un lugar bastante cercano al actual.Dicha capilla fue costeada por Doña Petronila Menéndez Valdés y el anteriormente citado obispo ovetense. A esta capilla es a la que se trasladaron las imágenes de San Lorenzo y San Rafael ya bajo la advocación de Nuestra Señora de la Providencia con una hermosa talla del s.XVII  fiel copia de la de la Virgen de la O que se veneraba en la Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro. Parece ser que fue un romero el que regalo la imagen de la Virgen de la Providencia, guía de navegantes, y enseguida la gente comenzó a llamarla Capilla de la Providencia pese a la oposición del Obispo.\nEsta capilla tuvo un incendio a finales del s. XIX y fue restaurada por José María López reinaugurándose  el 10 de agosto de 1898.Esta es la ermita que aparece en el cuadro de Ventura Álvarez Sala  de titulo “La promesa” que obtuvo la Medalla de Oro en la Exposición Internacional de Munich en 1905 y que actualmente se puede ver en las paredes de la sede del Gobierno del Principado de Asturias.\n   ![IMG_5590.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXBi7fdTjnJjsWfm8pkCDrrmeGc45iVXZVJGhchjmjZdF/IMG_5590.JPG)\nÓleo  “La Promesa” de Ventura Álvarez Sala\n\nNo se saben los motivos pero hay una nueva fiesta de reinauguración el 22 de junio de 1924, tal vez el culto decayó o se produjo un nuevo incendio, algo fácil al estar iluminada la capilla por velas durante la noche.\n![image005.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPbPzz8C7KHZP21JhCnzfh5kjmR1CkBgBRfVJKcfptRix/image005.jpg)\n  Capilla de la Providencia (1924)\n\nTodas estas imágenes (San Lorenzo, San Rafael y la Virgen)  se conservaron en esta Capilla hasta la guerra civil del 36 en que la persecución religiosa causo su destrucción. Aun hay muchos gijoneses que recuerdan como la capilla fue quemada durante la guerra.\n\nAl volver la paz, Don Dionisio Cifuentes regalo un prado (el actual) y corrió con los gastos de la construcción de la tercera capilla que se inauguro el domingo 26 de mayo de1946 con nuevas imágenes. La construyo Álvaro Menéndez siguiendo el proyecto  del arquitecto municipal Enrique Álvarez Sala. Lo más llamativo es la nueva imagen de la virgen construida en  los talleres de Dorrigo (Arganda) en Madrid, y que fue bendecida por el Provisor del de diócesis Sr. Fernández Miranda... Esta tercera capilla aun no fue definitva pues el 18 de Noviembre de 1986 se derribo ella sola. Unos días antes viendo el peligro de derrumbe el párroco de Somio había sacado las imágenes, el Sagrario y los objetos valiosos.\nSe realiza una suscripción pública y con proyecto del arquitecto D. El piso esta alzado sobre muretes de hormigón con forjado ceramico para evitar humedades. La estructura y el techo llevan acero laminado y la cubierta es de teja árabe... Consta de cabildo, nave y sacristia.La obra la realizo el contratista Don Ángel Rodríguez y su costo llego a los ocho millones delas antiguas pesetas (unos 50.000 euros).\n\nLa parcela en la que esta edificada tiene unos 1500 metros cuadrados. Del mantenimiento de la ermita se ocupa un Patronato formado ya en 1931 que se sustenta con los ingresos proporcionados por varias acciones dejadas por Don Dionisio además de las limosnas.\n\nLa imagen actual de la Virgen de la Providencia es de estilo románico- bizantino eso explicaría la tez morena ya que en nada se parece a la destruida en 1936 que era blanca. En la actual aparece sentada con el niño en el regazo y con la mano derecha sostiene el globo terráqueo. A su regreso de la peregrinación en barca cantaban \nVengo de San Lorenzo de la Tierra\nVoy a San Lorenzo de la Mar\nEnguedeyar, enguedeyar, enguedeyeme\nnunca me pude desenguedeyar.\nDe  este modo diferenciaban  la iglesia de San Lorenzo de tierra  que es la que se encuentra unida a la Torre de Jove Hevia, donde hoy se encuentra el colegio de San Lorenzo.\nPero con la llegada de la imagen de la Virgen el pueblo quiso una fiesta propia quedando fijada para el último domingo de mayo y aun sigue  celebrándose ese día.\n\n\nAgradecimientos archivos del Padre Patac: Bilioteca Publica Jovellanos (Gijón)\nGobierno del Principado de Asturias.\n\nSi algún lector le interesa viajar y ver esta capilla, estas son sus coordenadas.\n                                   43º 33´02” N  5º 36´56” W",
