But this wasn't what I was looking at. I was looking at the enormous wave of water that was just about to swallow me. I should probably also mention that I was chained to a lawn chair, on a dark and barren beach north of Malibu.

I knew I had only a short time before impact, and I thought real hard about what I would expend my very last thoughts on. But the harder I tried to recall some positive memory the emptier my thoughts became. All that could come to mind was my life just before all this happened.

***

I was sitting in my cube trying to perform an unnatural act on a
tag when my phone rang. I wanted to ignore it. I wanted and wanted and wanted, but finally I gave up and answered it.

"Yeah?" I growled, while continuing to type.

"Got a second?" came the voice of my boss.

"Not really."

"It's real important."

"Can't it wait?"

"Not really."

I sighed, but hung up my phone and left my abode. My boss' office was only a short distance away and I knocked on his perpetually open door. He responded with one of his forced and phony smiles and told me to come in and shut the door.

"What's up?" I asked, as I pushed the door closed.

"I have a little unfortunate news," he told me.

"Unfortunate news? What the hell does that mean?"

"You understand startups, Colin," he explained. "You've been there before. You've been in the trenches, just like me. You understand that cash flow is always an issue."

"What the hell does that mean?" I said once again—this time with my heart beating a little faster. Or perhaps a lot faster, with all sorts of bad thoughts flooding my head—each worse than the previous one.

"There's gonna be some cutbacks."

"You're laying me off?" I gasped.

"Of course, not," he insisted. "You're a valuable member of our team.

I sighed—this time with relief.

"Everyone's taking a twenty-percent pay cut," he continued.

"What?" I shrieked, while trying to solve multiple math problems in my head at once—all of which had results of less than zero.

"Even me. Even I'm taking a cut. Even the CEO."

"He only gets a dollar a year."

"That should show you how committed he is. Besides, this is only temporary."

"How temporary?"

"Just until we secure our Series C funding."

"Which will be?"

"Days most likely. Or perhaps a few weeks. Months on the outside. Six at the very latest."

"I don't know if I can do it," I murmured, with a shake of my head and an eye toward all those negative numbers.

"They're gonna make it up to everyone," he insisted, "in the form of options."

Options.

They were likely the only reason I took this job, and they were certainly the only reason I kept it. They represented not only the possibility of wealth, but also a chance for escape and independence as well. Unfortunately, they were also something that would only begin to vest a few months from then—on my year anniversary with the company.

"Changing the subject just a little," my boss went on, "how's the data browser coming?"

"It's not," I told him.

"What the hell does that mean?"

"It means next time hire a designer who knows CSS. Some of the elements are impossible."

"You better make them possible. By 9:00 A.M. tomorrow."

"What's at 9:00 A.M.?"

"You're demoing the browser for the board—and for lots of investors, too."

"Since when?"

"Since a few minutes before I called you."

"I'll be up all night!" I hollered, even though I knew I didn't have anything better to do that night, or on most nights.

"Plus a half-hour," my boss countered.

"What the hell does that mean?"

"I need you to do a phone screen," he sheepishly told me, before handing me a résumé."

"How can we be hiring?"

"A healthy company is always hiring."

"But why are we hiring?"

"One more thing, Colin. Everyone has to keep this cash flow situation on the QT. Because no one would ever give us money if they thought we actually needed it."

***

I returned to my cubicle and glanced at the résumé of Andrea Jones—a recent college grad who seemed much like thousands of others just like her, and, with more than a bit of aggravation, I dialed her number while clicking on a link my boss had just mailed me.

"Yes?" came a hopeful and young-sounding voice.

"This Andrea?" I asked.

"Yes," she mumbled.

"I'm Colin. Colin Jeffrey, from eLog.go."

"Yes."

"I'm gonna be doing your phone interview."

"Yes."

"Did someone send you the web address where you'll be typing the answers to my questions?"

"Yes."

"Are, are you all right?"

"Yes."

I could tell she wasn't. I could tell she was scared. I could tell this job meant something to her—maybe something important, and my aggravation faded—especially as it made me recall one of my first interviews, and how nervous I was.

"I understand you're applying for a back-end position?" I inquired.

"Yes."

"So, you're familiar with Node.js, right?"

"Yes."

"Okay. Let's start off with something real simple. Write me the code for an http server that responds with 'Hello, World.'"

"Yes."

"Yes?"

"Yes."

I waited for her to type something in the web page. I waited nearly a minute.

"Are you still there?" I murmured.

"Yes," she murmured back.

"Are you all right? I mean, if you're not up to this right now, we can reschedule. It's not a big deal. You'd actually be doing me a favor."

All of a sudden, she started to cry.

"Andrea?" I uttered.

"This is my dream job," she uttered back.

"Maybe you need to dream a little higher. Or maybe a lot higher."

"I couldn't sleep last night. All I could do was think about this very moment. And now, now I can't even remember my name."

"It's all right."

"It's not! I even drove to your building for inspiration."

"You're here?"

"Across the street—on a bench."

I knew I should've just ended the call right then, especially as I had so much work to do. But something led me out of my chair, and this same something led me to a window in front of the building, where I saw a lone figure crumpled on a bench. She actually looked as if she were trying to disappear within herself.

"I guess I'll let you go," she told me. "I'm sorry for wasting your time."

"You didn't," I insisted.

"Bye."

"Wait. I, I don't think you should drive in this state. I'll be right down."

***

I stepped outside the Pince-Nez Building—a large Art Deco monstrosity that had a huge statue of eyeglasses in front of it. Why it had this statue in front of it I could never find out. It simply did. Though the building did have its upsides. It was so close to the ocean that you could smell the sea air as soon as you stepped outside. You could even occasionally hear the waves, though I couldn't quite hear them that day.

At once, I saw a petite blonde sitting across the street on the bench, with her head down and just about everything else, and I walked up to her—not at all sure what I would say to her. I wasn't even sure what I was doing out there. Eventually, I came to a stop a short distance from her, and she raised her tear-soaked face—and I saw the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in person. She was beyond Venus. She was even beyond Botticelli. She was beyond perfection. And now it was me who couldn't remember my name.

"Colin?" she muttered.

"Yes," I muttered back.

"You didn't have to come out here."

"I know. Believe me, I know."

"I'll be fine."

"How, how about some coffee?"

"I don't drink coffee."

"Then, you definitely don't want to work here. That's all we live on."

She giggled. It was a nice giggle. Actually, it was more than just nice.

"I'm serious," I insisted. "I haven't had solid food in weeks."

She laughed, and so did I. Then, there was an awkward moment of silence while we looked into each other's eyes. Then, then she stood up.

"I'm parked just up the street," she told me, while pointing the way. "Well, it was nice meeting you."

Slowly, she started off, and I started thinking of ways I could stop this. I was drawn to her, and I knew the reason for this had more to do than just her looks—even if I didn't know what more.

"You sure you don't want to get a drink or something?" I asked—regretting the question immediately. There seemed something wrong with what I was asking, even if I couldn't place what.

She didn't exactly reply. She just stopped, without turning around.

"Andrea?" I mumbled.

"Only if you let me pay," she told me.

***

The waitress brought Andrea and me our second round of Coronas, and after we pushed our limes into the bottles and tipped them, I took a big swig, feeling all kinds of buzz—not from the alcohol, but from her. Over the previous beer I discovered that she had this magical ability—the ability to make me feel special. I got off just being in her presence.

"What do you do there?" she asked, while nodding toward the eyeglasses down the street.

"I'm a front-end developer," I told her.

"So, why were you the one interviewing me?"

"I have lots of back-end experience. I even wrote the game server for Warlock Quest."

"I've played that!"

"You and everyone else."

"Why'd you leave?"

"The pay was shit. And the hours were even shittier. And there was no possibility of equity at all."

"So, it's all about the money for you."

"I guess. Oh, I don't know. It wasn't always that way. In fact, I . . ."

"What?"

"It's not important."

"Tell me. Please."

I responded by glancing around, before leaning toward her and whispering, "I, I once almost worked for the CIA."

"Get out of here!" she howled. "You mean doing tech stuff, right?"

"No, as a spy. A case officer, they call it."

"Get out of here!"

"I've never told anyone that, not even my family. Actually, I wasn't allowed to."

"Are you still not allowed to talk about it?"

"I don't know. But, but you don't really want to hear about it. Believe me, it's nothing exciting."

"Please."

"Well, I was just finishing my undergraduate degree at UCLA, and I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I mean, I had done some internships and had gone to some job fairs and I was also thinking some about grad school. But I just didn't know. Nothing seemed to turn me on, to be honest. Then, one day I saw this really vague leaflet about a career overseas, and when I went to the event, it was for the CIA."

"So, you just signed up right there?"

"Nah. I had to take this day-long test, and fill out this huge application. Then, I had multiple interviews in Virginia. They even gave me a polygraph."

"Wow. And then?"

"Then, after 18 months of waiting, I get a Dear Jeffrey letter: Dear Mr. Jeffrey, we regret to inform you that you are no longer a candidate . . . blah-blah-blah."

"Well, that's sucks. Did they tell you why?"

"Nope. You know, maybe it was then I became about the money. Because once you have money, you don't need anyone's permission. And no one tells you no."

Andrea smiled.

"What's so funny?" I demanded.

"I think just about the same as you," she told me.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. Hey, you like tequila?"

***

I don't know how many shots we had, but by the time night fell, I was drunker than I had ever been, which was no small feat. I was also sky-high, especially when a bunch of coworkers came into the bar and saw who I was with. I could see the envy all over their faces, and I fed off this.

I felt so good and so comfortable with Andrea that I told her everything there was to tell about myself. I especially told her about my job. I even told her about all the stuff I wasn't supposed to talk about.

"I guess it's a good thing I fucked up that interview," she blurted out afterward.

"It was a real good thing," I told her.

Suddenly, my phone rang—and I took it out and answered it, while trying to sound sober. Which was no small feat.

"Where are you?" came the voice of my boss.

"I had something personal to take care of," I replied.

"What about the browser?"

"It'll be ready. I promise."

I then hung up and Andrea leaned over the table toward me, and our foreheads and noses met.

"You hate your job, don't you?" she said, after grasping my neck.

"With a great and powerful passion," I said back.

"What if I could offer you . . . oh, I don't know. What if I had the power to offer you an exciting, thrill-a-minute life? Would you take it? Would you throw away everything and take it?"

"Yes."

"Even those options?"

"Even those motherfucking options!"

"Let's go."

"Go where?"

"Where do you live?"

***

The two of us stumbled toward the entrance of my skyscraper arm-in-arm.

Soon, we reached the doors, just as the smiling doorman let us inside.

"Wow," she mumbled, as we made our way toward the elevator. "This is a really nice place. I mean, a really nice place."

"You wouldn't say that if you saw my mortgage payments, as in plural."

We both laughed, and jumped into the elevator, where—right after pushing the button for the 17th floor—I took Andrea into my arms and kissed her.

However, suddenly I again felt something wasn't right, even if I again wasn't sure what it was—and I stopped.

"What's wrong?" she murmured.

"Am, am I taking advantage of you?" I slurred.

"Maybe I'm taking advantage of you."

"I'm serious."

"So am I."

Just then, the elevator stopped, and the door swung open, and I led Andrea to my unit a short distance away. I further led her inside it, and the first thing she noticed was the living room window and the view of the bay.

"Wow," she uttered, as she stepped toward it.

"Wow," I repeated, as I stepped toward her. But I didn't step for long. After just a few steps, I fell right onto my face and passed out.

***

When I awoke, I was lying on my bed naked, with the morning sun streaming through my window. And I was still drunk. I felt as if I were as drunk as I had been the night before, if not more so.

"Andrea?" I mumbled.

There was no reply, so I called out her name a little louder—and a little louder after that. Soon, I was screaming it, but I got the very same reply.

Finally, I crawled out of bed and saw that it was after ten.

You're demoing the browser for the board—and for lots of investors, too.

The words of my boss began echoing inside my head, along with a certain time he mentioned.

"Shit," was all I could say or think, and I kept saying and thinking this as I quickly showered and dressed and ran to work.

Like usual, my boss' door was open, and, way short of breath, I stepped into the room and doubled-over.

I didn't hear a sound, and, for a moment, I thought he wasn't there. But when I raised myself I saw him gazing into his monitor.

"I'm sorry," I muttered.

He didn't respond. He didn't even acknowledge I was there—not even when I repeated myself.

"Tomorrow," I told him. "I promise I'll have it ready by tomorrow."

"How could you?" he whispered, with a near constant shake of his head. "How could you do this to us?"

"I said I was sorry. I'll demo it tomorrow. I promise."

Angrily, he spun toward me and growled, "You think we'd let you demo anything of ours again after what you just did?"

"Look, okay, I missed a meeting. I told you I had some personal things to take care of. I'm sorry. I'm fucking sorry."

"Meeting? You think I'm talking about the meeting? I'm talking about your tweets!"

"My tweets?"

Quickly, I yanked out my phone and logged onto Twitter, and I saw page after page of rants about the company—all written by me. Rants about the pay cut. Rants about my bosses. Even rants about the investors. And these rants included every vulgar expression in the English language—and some I had never even heard.

"I . . . I don't remember any of this," I muttered. "I swear I don't."

Suddenly, a security guard entered—a tall skinny guy carrying an empty cardboard box.

"Please help Mr. Jeffrey collect his belongings," my boss told the man, "and then escort him out of this ridiculous building he loathes so much."

"But," I gasped, "but I don't remember any of this."

"Goodbye, Colin. Good luck finding a new job. And a new career."

"But . . . but my options."

"You already told us where we can stick them."

***

With one arm grasping the cardboard box, I unlocked my mailbox and pulled out a bunch of letters—most of which were bills I could no longer pay. I then stumbled toward the elevator, with my head and just about everything else spinning.

Suddenly, my phone rang—and I not only jumped but also dropped the box and my mail onto the floor, gaining the unwanted attention of the doorman, who looked at me as if he didn't know me at all.

"Hello?" I mumbled into the device.

"Hey," came a familiar female voice.

"Andrea?"

"Call me Andi. After all, I think we're way past formalities."

"Why are you calling me?

"How you feeling?"

"Not so good."

"I can make you feel a whole lot better."

"I don't think so."

"Let's meet at that bar, say in a hour."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Look, I just got fired."

"That's what we need to talk about."

"You, you did this to me?"

"You don't have to thank me."

"Thank you?"

"You're welcome."

"Fuck you!"

"Don't you think you did enough of that last night?"

"I did?"

"I'm coming right over."

"Stay away from me!"

I then hung up and again noticed the doorman staring at me. I wanted to ignore this. I wanted and wanted and wanted. I also picked up my things and rushed into the elevator, just as my phone rang again.

"I told you to leave me alone!" I screamed into the device.

"When?" came a familiar male voice—one belonging to Bill Ratner—the recruiter who had gotten me my now ex-job and who had been trying to get me to go out on interviews for the past month.

"Bill," I uttered, with lots of relief. "You have no idea how happy I am to hear you."

"What in the world happened to you, Colin?"

"You've heard?"

"Heard? I've seen!"

"On Twitter?"

"Twitter? I'm talking about Facebook!"

"Facebook?" I howled, just as the elevator stopped on my floor. I afterward exited the car and tossed the cardboard box against the wall. I further logged onto Facebook and saw tons of naked pictures of myself, with multiple women—all of whom were covered in tattoos and piercings. There were also drugs and drug paraphernalia everywhere.

"What were you thinking?" Bill screamed. "I mean, I know what you were thinking. Believe me, I know. But why would you post pictures of it?"

"I didn't!" I insisted. "It, it was this girl!"

"Which one?"

"A different one."

"You mean, there was more? And here I thought you were dull."

"I am dull!"

"Is, is that a goat?"

"A what?"

Hurriedly, I scrolled down the screen. I scrolled and scrolled, and finally found what he was looking at—and I wished I hadn't. You have no idea how I wished.

"I," I muttered, "I must've been drugged or something."

"You need to delete this shit right now."

"Don't you understand how the Internet works? Nothing ever gets deleted. It's always there in some shape or form. And God knows how many people have already downloaded everything."

"I know I have."

"What?

"You gotta admit, Colin—it's pretty damn hot. I mean, apart from the goat."

"Bill, you're not helping. You're really not helping."

"Look, buddy, take a big deep breath and call me in the morning. Oh, and if I can't take your call, just leave a message. I'll be sure to get back to you just as soon as possible."

Right then, he hung up—and I dropped my phone onto the floor, and heard the screen crack. Then, while shaking all over, an indisputable truth began hammering my brain.

I was fucked.
|

But this wasn't what I was looking at. I was looking at the enormous wave of water that was just about to swallow me. I should probably also mention that I was chained to a lawn chair, on a dark and barren beach north of Malibu.
\n
I knew I had only a short time before impact, and I thought real hard about what I would expend my very last thoughts on. But the harder I tried to recall some positive memory the emptier my thoughts became. All that could come to mind was my life just before all this happened.
\n
***
\n
I was sitting in my cube trying to perform an unnatural act on a
tag when my phone rang. I wanted to ignore it. I wanted and wanted and wanted, but finally I gave up and answered it.
\n
"Yeah?" I growled, while continuing to type.
\n
"Got a second?" came the voice of my boss.
\n
"Not really."
\n
"It's real important."
\n
"Can't it wait?"
\n
"Not really."
\n
I sighed, but hung up my phone and left my abode. My boss' office was only a short distance away and I knocked on his perpetually open door. He responded with one of his forced and phony smiles and told me to come in and shut the door.
\n
"What's up?" I asked, as I pushed the door closed.
\n
"I have a little unfortunate news," he told me.
\n
"Unfortunate news? What the hell does that mean?"
\n
"You understand startups, Colin," he explained. "You've been there before. You've been in the trenches, just like me. You understand that cash flow is always an issue."
\n
"What the hell does that mean?" I said once again—this time with my heart beating a little faster. Or perhaps a lot faster, with all sorts of bad thoughts flooding my head—each worse than the previous one.
\n
"There's gonna be some cutbacks."
\n
"You're laying me off?" I gasped.
\n
"Of course, not," he insisted. "You're a valuable member of our team.
\n
I sighed—this time with relief.
\n
"Everyone's taking a twenty-percent pay cut," he continued.
\n
"What?" I shrieked, while trying to solve multiple math problems in my head at once—all of which had results of less than zero.
\n
"Even me. Even I'm taking a cut. Even the CEO."
\n
"He only gets a dollar a year."
\n
"That should show you how committed he is. Besides, this is only temporary."
\n
"How temporary?"
\n
"Just until we secure our Series C funding."
\n
"Which will be?"
\n
"Days most likely. Or perhaps a few weeks. Months on the outside. Six at the very latest."
\n
"I don't know if I can do it," I murmured, with a shake of my head and an eye toward all those negative numbers.
\n
"They're gonna make it up to everyone," he insisted, "in the form of options."
\n
Options.
\n
They were likely the only reason I took this job, and they were certainly the only reason I kept it. They represented not only the possibility of wealth, but also a chance for escape and independence as well. Unfortunately, they were also something that would only begin to vest a few months from then—on my year anniversary with the company.
\n
"Changing the subject just a little," my boss went on, "how's the data browser coming?"
\n
"It's not," I told him.
\n
"What the hell does that mean?"
\n
"It means next time hire a designer who knows CSS. Some of the elements are impossible."
\n
"You better make them possible. By 9:00 A.M. tomorrow."
\n
"What's at 9:00 A.M.?"
\n
"You're demoing the browser for the board—and for lots of investors, too."
\n
"Since when?"
\n
"Since a few minutes before I called you."
\n
"I'll be up all night!" I hollered, even though I knew I didn't have anything better to do that night, or on most nights.
\n
"Plus a half-hour," my boss countered.
\n
"What the hell does that mean?"
\n
"I need you to do a phone screen," he sheepishly told me, before handing me a résumé."
\n
"How can we be hiring?"
\n
"A healthy company is always hiring."
\n
"But why are we hiring?"
\n
"One more thing, Colin. Everyone has to keep this cash flow situation on the QT. Because no one would ever give us money if they thought we actually needed it."
\n
***
\n
I returned to my cubicle and glanced at the résumé of Andrea Jones—a recent college grad who seemed much like thousands of others just like her, and, with more than a bit of aggravation, I dialed her number while clicking on a link my boss had just mailed me.
\n
"Yes?" came a hopeful and young-sounding voice.
\n
"This Andrea?" I asked.
\n
"Yes," she mumbled.
\n
"I'm Colin. Colin Jeffrey, from eLog.go."
\n
"Yes."
\n
"I'm gonna be doing your phone interview."
\n
"Yes."
\n
"Did someone send you the web address where you'll be typing the answers to my questions?"
\n
"Yes."
\n
"Are, are you all right?"
\n
"Yes."
\n
I could tell she wasn't. I could tell she was scared. I could tell this job meant something to her—maybe something important, and my aggravation faded—especially as it made me recall one of my first interviews, and how nervous I was.
\n
"I understand you're applying for a back-end position?" I inquired.
\n
"Yes."
\n
"So, you're familiar with Node.js, right?"
\n
"Yes."
\n
"Okay. Let's start off with something real simple. Write me the code for an http server that responds with 'Hello, World.'"
\n
"Yes."
\n
"Yes?"
\n
"Yes."
\n
I waited for her to type something in the web page. I waited nearly a minute.
\n
"Are you still there?" I murmured.
\n
"Yes," she murmured back.
\n
"Are you all right? I mean, if you're not up to this right now, we can reschedule. It's not a big deal. You'd actually be doing me a favor."
\n
All of a sudden, she started to cry.
\n
"Andrea?" I uttered.
\n
"This is my dream job," she uttered back.
\n
"Maybe you need to dream a little higher. Or maybe a lot higher."
\n
"I couldn't sleep last night. All I could do was think about this very moment. And now, now I can't even remember my name."
\n
"It's all right."
\n
"It's not! I even drove to your building for inspiration."
\n
"You're here?"
\n
"Across the street—on a bench."
\n
I knew I should've just ended the call right then, especially as I had so much work to do. But something led me out of my chair, and this same something led me to a window in front of the building, where I saw a lone figure crumpled on a bench. She actually looked as if she were trying to disappear within herself.
\n
"I guess I'll let you go," she told me. "I'm sorry for wasting your time."
\n
"You didn't," I insisted.
\n
"Bye."
\n
"Wait. I, I don't think you should drive in this state. I'll be right down."
\n
***
\n
I stepped outside the Pince-Nez Building—a large Art Deco monstrosity that had a huge statue of eyeglasses in front of it. Why it had this statue in front of it I could never find out. It simply did. Though the building did have its upsides. It was so close to the ocean that you could smell the sea air as soon as you stepped outside. You could even occasionally hear the waves, though I couldn't quite hear them that day.
\n
At once, I saw a petite blonde sitting across the street on the bench, with her head down and just about everything else, and I walked up to her—not at all sure what I would say to her. I wasn't even sure what I was doing out there. Eventually, I came to a stop a short distance from her, and she raised her tear-soaked face—and I saw the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in person. She was beyond Venus. She was even beyond Botticelli. She was beyond perfection. And now it was me who couldn't remember my name.
\n
"Colin?" she muttered.
\n
"Yes," I muttered back.
\n
"You didn't have to come out here."
\n
"I know. Believe me, I know."
\n
"I'll be fine."
\n
"How, how about some coffee?"
\n
"I don't drink coffee."
\n
"Then, you definitely don't want to work here. That's all we live on."
\n
She giggled. It was a nice giggle. Actually, it was more than just nice.
\n
"I'm serious," I insisted. "I haven't had solid food in weeks."
\n
She laughed, and so did I. Then, there was an awkward moment of silence while we looked into each other's eyes. Then, then she stood up.
\n
"I'm parked just up the street," she told me, while pointing the way. "Well, it was nice meeting you."
\n
Slowly, she started off, and I started thinking of ways I could stop this. I was drawn to her, and I knew the reason for this had more to do than just her looks—even if I didn't know what more.
\n
"You sure you don't want to get a drink or something?" I asked—regretting the question immediately. There seemed something wrong with what I was asking, even if I couldn't place what.
\n
She didn't exactly reply. She just stopped, without turning around.
\n
"Andrea?" I mumbled.
\n
"Only if you let me pay," she told me.
\n
***
\n
The waitress brought Andrea and me our second round of Coronas, and after we pushed our limes into the bottles and tipped them, I took a big swig, feeling all kinds of buzz—not from the alcohol, but from her. Over the previous beer I discovered that she had this magical ability—the ability to make me feel special. I got off just being in her presence.
\n
"What do you do there?" she asked, while nodding toward the eyeglasses down the street.
\n
"I'm a front-end developer," I told her.
\n
"So, why were you the one interviewing me?"
\n
"I have lots of back-end experience. I even wrote the game server for Warlock Quest."
\n
"I've played that!"
\n
"You and everyone else."
\n
"Why'd you leave?"
\n
"The pay was shit. And the hours were even shittier. And there was no possibility of equity at all."
\n
"So, it's all about the money for you."
\n
"I guess. Oh, I don't know. It wasn't always that way. In fact, I . . ."
\n
"What?"
\n
"It's not important."
\n
"Tell me. Please."
\n
I responded by glancing around, before leaning toward her and whispering, "I, I once almost worked for the CIA."
\n
"Get out of here!" she howled. "You mean doing tech stuff, right?"
\n
"No, as a spy. A case officer, they call it."
\n
"Get out of here!"
\n
"I've never told anyone that, not even my family. Actually, I wasn't allowed to."
\n
"Are you still not allowed to talk about it?"
\n
"I don't know. But, but you don't really want to hear about it. Believe me, it's nothing exciting."
\n
"Please."
\n
"Well, I was just finishing my undergraduate degree at UCLA, and I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I mean, I had done some internships and had gone to some job fairs and I was also thinking some about grad school. But I just didn't know. Nothing seemed to turn me on, to be honest. Then, one day I saw this really vague leaflet about a career overseas, and when I went to the event, it was for the CIA."
\n
"So, you just signed up right there?"
\n
"Nah. I had to take this day-long test, and fill out this huge application. Then, I had multiple interviews in Virginia. They even gave me a polygraph."
\n
"Wow. And then?"
\n
"Then, after 18 months of waiting, I get a Dear Jeffrey letter: Dear Mr. Jeffrey, we regret to inform you that you are no longer a candidate . . . blah-blah-blah."
\n
"Well, that's sucks. Did they tell you why?"
\n
"Nope. You know, maybe it was then I became about the money. Because once you have money, you don't need anyone's permission. And no one tells you no."
\n
Andrea smiled.
\n
"What's so funny?" I demanded.
\n
"I think just about the same as you," she told me.
\n
"Yeah?"
\n
"Yeah. Hey, you like tequila?"
\n
***
\n
I don't know how many shots we had, but by the time night fell, I was drunker than I had ever been, which was no small feat. I was also sky-high, especially when a bunch of coworkers came into the bar and saw who I was with. I could see the envy all over their faces, and I fed off this.
\n
I felt so good and so comfortable with Andrea that I told her everything there was to tell about myself. I especially told her about my job. I even told her about all the stuff I wasn't supposed to talk about.
\n
"I guess it's a good thing I fucked up that interview," she blurted out afterward.
\n
"It was a real good thing," I told her.
\n
Suddenly, my phone rang—and I took it out and answered it, while trying to sound sober. Which was no small feat.
\n
"Where are you?" came the voice of my boss.
\n
"I had something personal to take care of," I replied.
\n
"What about the browser?"
\n
"It'll be ready. I promise."
\n
I then hung up and Andrea leaned over the table toward me, and our foreheads and noses met.
\n
"You hate your job, don't you?" she said, after grasping my neck.
\n
"With a great and powerful passion," I said back.
\n
"What if I could offer you . . . oh, I don't know. What if I had the power to offer you an exciting, thrill-a-minute life? Would you take it? Would you throw away everything and take it?"
\n
"Yes."
\n
"Even those options?"
\n
"Even those motherfucking options!"
\n
"Let's go."
\n
"Go where?"
\n
"Where do you live?"
\n
***
\n
The two of us stumbled toward the entrance of my skyscraper arm-in-arm.
\n
Soon, we reached the doors, just as the smiling doorman let us inside.
\n
"Wow," she mumbled, as we made our way toward the elevator. "This is a really nice place. I mean, a really nice place."
\n
"You wouldn't say that if you saw my mortgage payments, as in plural."
\n
We both laughed, and jumped into the elevator, where—right after pushing the button for the 17th floor—I took Andrea into my arms and kissed her.
\n
However, suddenly I again felt something wasn't right, even if I again wasn't sure what it was—and I stopped.
\n
"What's wrong?" she murmured.
\n
"Am, am I taking advantage of you?" I slurred.
\n
"Maybe I'm taking advantage of you."
\n
"I'm serious."
\n
"So am I."
\n
Just then, the elevator stopped, and the door swung open, and I led Andrea to my unit a short distance away. I further led her inside it, and the first thing she noticed was the living room window and the view of the bay.
\n
"Wow," she uttered, as she stepped toward it.
\n
"Wow," I repeated, as I stepped toward her. But I didn't step for long. After just a few steps, I fell right onto my face and passed out.
\n
***
\n
When I awoke, I was lying on my bed naked, with the morning sun streaming through my window. And I was still drunk. I felt as if I were as drunk as I had been the night before, if not more so.
\n
"Andrea?" I mumbled.
\n
There was no reply, so I called out her name a little louder—and a little louder after that. Soon, I was screaming it, but I got the very same reply.
\n
Finally, I crawled out of bed and saw that it was after ten.
\n
You're demoing the browser for the board—and for lots of investors, too.
\n
The words of my boss began echoing inside my head, along with a certain time he mentioned.
\n
"Shit," was all I could say or think, and I kept saying and thinking this as I quickly showered and dressed and ran to work.
\n
Like usual, my boss' door was open, and, way short of breath, I stepped into the room and doubled-over.
\n
I didn't hear a sound, and, for a moment, I thought he wasn't there. But when I raised myself I saw him gazing into his monitor.
\n
"I'm sorry," I muttered.
\n
He didn't respond. He didn't even acknowledge I was there—not even when I repeated myself.
\n
"Tomorrow," I told him. "I promise I'll have it ready by tomorrow."
\n
"How could you?" he whispered, with a near constant shake of his head. "How could you do this to us?"
\n
"I said I was sorry. I'll demo it tomorrow. I promise."
\n
Angrily, he spun toward me and growled, "You think we'd let you demo anything of ours again after what you just did?"
\n
"Look, okay, I missed a meeting. I told you I had some personal things to take care of. I'm sorry. I'm fucking sorry."
\n
"Meeting? You think I'm talking about the meeting? I'm talking about your tweets!"
\n
"My tweets?"
\n
Quickly, I yanked out my phone and logged onto Twitter, and I saw page after page of rants about the company—all written by me. Rants about the pay cut. Rants about my bosses. Even rants about the investors. And these rants included every vulgar expression in the English language—and some I had never even heard.
\n
"I . . . I don't remember any of this," I muttered. "I swear I don't."
\n
Suddenly, a security guard entered—a tall skinny guy carrying an empty cardboard box.
\n
"Please help Mr. Jeffrey collect his belongings," my boss told the man, "and then escort him out of this ridiculous building he loathes so much."
\n
"But," I gasped, "but I don't remember any of this."
\n
"Goodbye, Colin. Good luck finding a new job. And a new career."
\n
"But . . . but my options."
\n
"You already told us where we can stick them."
\n
***
\n
With one arm grasping the cardboard box, I unlocked my mailbox and pulled out a bunch of letters—most of which were bills I could no longer pay. I then stumbled toward the elevator, with my head and just about everything else spinning.
\n
Suddenly, my phone rang—and I not only jumped but also dropped the box and my mail onto the floor, gaining the unwanted attention of the doorman, who looked at me as if he didn't know me at all.
\n
"Hello?" I mumbled into the device.
\n
"Hey," came a familiar female voice.
\n
"Andrea?"
\n
"Call me Andi. After all, I think we're way past formalities."
\n
"Why are you calling me?
\n
"How you feeling?"
\n
"Not so good."
\n
"I can make you feel a whole lot better."
\n
"I don't think so."
\n
"Let's meet at that bar, say in a hour."
\n
"No."
\n
"Why not?"
\n
"Look, I just got fired."
\n
"That's what we need to talk about."
\n
"You, you did this to me?"
\n
"You don't have to thank me."
\n
"Thank you?"
\n
"You're welcome."
\n
"Fuck you!"
\n
"Don't you think you did enough of that last night?"
\n
"I did?"
\n
"I'm coming right over."
\n
"Stay away from me!"
\n
I then hung up and again noticed the doorman staring at me. I wanted to ignore this. I wanted and wanted and wanted. I also picked up my things and rushed into the elevator, just as my phone rang again.
\n
"I told you to leave me alone!" I screamed into the device.
\n
"When?" came a familiar male voice—one belonging to Bill Ratner—the recruiter who had gotten me my now ex-job and who had been trying to get me to go out on interviews for the past month.
\n
"Bill," I uttered, with lots of relief. "You have no idea how happy I am to hear you."
\n
"What in the world happened to you, Colin?"
\n
"You've heard?"
\n
"Heard? I've seen!"
\n
"On Twitter?"
\n
"Twitter? I'm talking about Facebook!"
\n
"Facebook?" I howled, just as the elevator stopped on my floor. I afterward exited the car and tossed the cardboard box against the wall. I further logged onto Facebook and saw tons of naked pictures of myself, with multiple women—all of whom were covered in tattoos and piercings. There were also drugs and drug paraphernalia everywhere.
\n
"What were you thinking?" Bill screamed. "I mean, I know what you were thinking. Believe me, I know. But why would you post pictures of it?"
\n
"I didn't!" I insisted. "It, it was this girl!"
\n
"Which one?"
\n
"A different one."
\n
"You mean, there was more? And here I thought you were dull."
\n
"I am dull!"
\n
"Is, is that a goat?"
\n
"A what?"
\n
Hurriedly, I scrolled down the screen. I scrolled and scrolled, and finally found what he was looking at—and I wished I hadn't. You have no idea how I wished.
\n
"I," I muttered, "I must've been drugged or something."
\n
"You need to delete this shit right now."
\n
"Don't you understand how the Internet works? Nothing ever gets deleted. It's always there in some shape or form. And God knows how many people have already downloaded everything."
\n
"I know I have."
\n
"What?
\n
"You gotta admit, Colin—it's pretty damn hot. I mean, apart from the goat."
\n
"Bill, you're not helping. You're really not helping."
\n
"Look, buddy, take a big deep breath and call me in the morning. Oh, and if I can't take your call, just leave a message. I'll be sure to get back to you just as soon as possible."
\n
Right then, he hung up—and I dropped my phone onto the floor, and heard the screen crack. Then, while shaking all over, an indisputable truth began hammering my brain.
\n
I was fucked.
",
