| body | <center> </center> South Korea is not the most expensive place to live in, but your finance can definitely get out of hand pretty quickly if its not kept in check. Here are some money-saving tips for my fellow friends living in South Korea! # 1. Getting a SIM card <br> *In Korea, for almost every online service that you can think of (internet shopping, payment, SNS etc.), you’ll need to verify your ID using your phone number. Make sure that the name registered to your bank account and phone is EXACTLY THE SAME as your alien card. For various reasons, staffs in banks and telcos tend to screw this up (Happened to me and a few of my friends) so just double check it to make your life in Korea easier. **_-Without Alien Registration Card (ARC)_** If you don’t have your ARC yet, fret not. There are still ways for you to get a SIM card even without it. There are different alternatives such as getting a tourist SIM card from convenience stores but I’m not gonna bore you with obvious options. The best way to get a temporary prepaid SIM card without an ARC is to visit the MobilePhoneKorea (MPK) office near Gangnam subway station exit 1. This place is very foreigner friendly and they do have staffs from multiple countries who all speak English so language is not really a problem.Their office is at 3rd floor of Taeyoung Building and the full address is: 826-35, Yeoksam 1-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Korea. <center> </center> The cost of the SIM card? **_FREE!_** On top of that, it comes with a free 10,000KRW credit (equivalent to around 1Gb of data) and can be recharged when needed. Just show them your passport and you’re good to go! I was very skeptical at first and was very worried about hidden obligations attached. However, all my friends and I had no problem with it, and we just threw it away after getting a new SIM card. They also sell displayed model phones at a very discounted price. *Do check out their Facebook page or website for updated information and location. FB page: https://www.facebook.com/mobilephonesinkorea/ Website: http://mp.ckycrew.co.kr/index.htm **_-With ARC_** The 3 main telco companies in South Korea are SKT, KT (Olleh) and LG U+. However, the main focus of this writing will be on 알뜰폰 mobile services. 알뜰폰are basically mobile services provided by companies that lease their network from one of the 3 main telco companies hence the cheaper price. In addition, you still get to enjoy **_FREE WiFi_** provided by the respective lessor telco company and **_NO CONTRACT IS REQUIRED_**. The downside? You will definitely need to know Korean for the application process but you can always ask your Korean friends for help! They are found in convenient stores, post offices and even Daiso! You can apply for it online and have the SIM card delivered the next day or physically visit the retails stores. <center> [Image source](http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J3myXVJs5dw/UaVLsZ8eTYI/AAAAAAAAAS4/W-rs-9JsCe8/s1600/gs25cu.png) </center> For those who do not need an unlimited mobile plan, I recommend getting a 알뜰폰 plan from either CU or GS25. They provide several mobile plans, with the most marketed one being the plan for 10Gb of data, 100 mins of call and 100 text messages for roughly 20,000KRW. That’s not all. If you apply for one of the supported credit cards (which can be hard for students), you can get a **_huge discount_**! For example, if you get a 10Gb plan from GS25 which costs 20,900KRW ($20USD) monthly and pay using a supported credit card, you can get up to a **_whooping 17,000KRW off_** your monthly bill! This results in a payable balance of only 3,900KRW! Quite a deal huh! If you get the 6Gb data plan, your bill would be only a measly 500KRW ($0.5USD)! To put this into perspective, my previous plan with KT cost around 25,000KRW for 2Gb of data with very little free outgoing call time and text messages. Having said so, only specific cards are supported and they require a minimum monthly spending. In the case of the card mentioned above, the required monthly spending is 300,000KRW (Approx $300USD). This is not really a problem since most of us spend much more than that, I guess? You can check out their website and find out more (Only in Korean): GS 25 - https://gs25.uplussave.com/gs/cmmn/index.mhp CU - http://www.cjhellodirect.com/cuplan/cuplanInfo.do --- # 2. Online Shopping & Groceries <center> [Image source](http://www.englishspectrum.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/online-shopping-korea.jpg) </center> Be it shopping for your favorite clothing brand, cosmetic or even groceries, you can get a bang for your bucks if you look at the right place! I recommend using the mobile apps for all online shopping sites mentioned below to avoid installing softwares on your computer (Yes, a lot of Korean sites require you to install several software before payment can be made) **Online Options** - _Ticketmonster (Tmon): Cheapest household good and groceries_ This is my favorite online shopping site for household goods and groceries. Tmon started off as a online travel agency hence the word “ticket” in its name. However, over time they’ve expanded their business to include almost everything. Household goods and groceries here are **_VERY VERY CHEAP_** as compared to supermarkets, and a lot of Korean fashion brands often have their clearance sales here too. For groceries, they provide immediate delivery subjected to availability. Usually if you order something at night, you can expect to receive it by the next morning. Delivery is free for purchases over 30,000KRW. They don’t have a wide variety of options here but they have all the necessities at very affordable prices. http://www.ticketmonster.co.kr/home (Only in Korean) <br> - _Gmarket: English site available_ This is by far the most foreigner friendly online shopping site in Korea. They have an English site and prices here are pretty competitive too. http://www.gmarket.co.kr <br> - _Danawa: Best for electronics_ Danawa can be translated to English as “_everything is shown_”. As the name suggests, it compares prices of a product across all online shopping sites in Korea and shows where you can get the best deal. I often use this site when I am buying electronic products since this is literally the "online version" of Yongsan Market. http://www.danawa.com (Only in Korean) <br> - _KakaoTalk: Hidden gems_ What? KakaoTalk? Yes, KakaoTalk has a shopping feature in its messaging app. The stuffs sold here are usually quite unique at attractive prices. There is also a KakaoPay feature in the app which allows you to send money through messages, and you can even make bank transfers without the need for the annoying bank-issued plastic security card for online transactions. They also have an integrated membership card feature with quite a number of partnered retails so you don’t have to always carry all your cards with you. This feature allows you receive digital coupons and sales event information from partnered retail so you will never miss a deal again. <br> - _Payco: All about convenience_ This is not a online shopping mall but a payment app. The reason why I recommend this is because you can accumulate cash points when you make payment through this app. The points can then be used to deduct the amount off future purchases. This service is free and you can use it on all online shopping sites and even convenient stores. As I’ve mentioned before, Korean sites require you to install a lot of software before payment can be made. If you use Payco, you only need 1 app. - _Other honorable mentions:_ http://www.wemakeprice.com http://www.coupang.com --- # 3. Banking and Remittance <br><center> [Image source](https://blog.aclipse.net/hs-fs/hubfs/Korean%20banks.jpg?t=1535735593737&width=752&name=Korean%20banks.jpg) </center> - _Foreign exchange_ Even though money exchanges have the best foreign exchange rate, banks in Korea have surprisingly good rates too so you don’t have to worry about getting knocked off. KEB Hana bank has the highest foreign exchange rate and they are very foreigner friendly too. They also have staffs who speak different languages so communication is not a problem. I also recommend exchanging currency in Korea before going overseas as Korea often have higher exchange rates. <br> - _Remittance_ All the banks in Korea provide foreign remittance service and charge similar fees. From my experience, the transaction generally takes around 1-3 days. However, if you have a Citibank account in your home country, Citibank Korea offers instant remittance service for FREE! Citibank Korea also has the most user friendly mobile banking app among all the banks in Korea IMHO and is very foreigner friendly as well. --- # 4. Free Money, Food and Drinks (Non-Koreans only) <br><center> [Image source](https://i0.wp.com/www.swiftsalary.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/how-to-get-free-money-online.jpg?w=660&ssl=1) </center> I’ve saved the best til the last. Free money? You kidding? No i’m not joking, there is a way to get free money legally. Just bring your passport and head over to a casino to get free playing chips on your FIRST VISIT! (You can visit both casinos listed below and get free chips on both of your first visits) - 7 Luck Casino There are 2 branches in Seoul and 1 in Busan. On your first visit, you can get 20,000KRW credits for table game and 10,000KRW credit for slots. Mind you, they are playing chips and cannot be used to exchange for cash. However, all **_winnings are cashable_**. Just head over to any table games and place two 10k bets on opposite sides and you’re bound to convert 10k into cash chips after one game (Unless you are very very unlucky). Repeat until all playing chips are converted into cash chips. The same goes for the slot credit. Just spend the given 10k credit and keep your winnings. Voucher: http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/HD/event/2017/10/190201/enu.html (Updated voucher can be easily found on google)<br> - Paradise Casino For this casino, I recommend going to the Incheon airport branch as they give you an **_insane 50k credit_** for table games and 20k credit for slots. However, the 50k credit must be used up in one hand, which means its either _all or nothing_. On the bright side they do offer _free food_ here, and the 갈비탕 (beef short rib soup) that I had was insanely delicious. Alcoholic beverages are not free but they are heavily discounted. Hop on the free Maglev train at Incheon airport and alight at paradise city station the next time you happen to visit the airport! Voucher: https://en.trippose.com/tour/paradise-city-paradise-casino-coupon/coupon (Updated voucher can be easily found on google) <br> That's it! I hope this blog helped you guys learn how to save some $$ in Korea. Cheers! |

"body": "<center> </center> \n\nSouth Korea is not the most expensive place to live in, but your finance can definitely get out of hand pretty quickly if its not kept in check. Here are some money-saving tips for my fellow friends living in South Korea!\n\n# 1. Getting a SIM card\n<br>\n *In Korea, for almost every online service that you can think of (internet shopping, payment, SNS etc.), you’ll need to verify your ID using your phone number. Make sure that the name registered to your bank account and phone is EXACTLY THE SAME as your alien card. For various reasons, staffs in banks and telcos tend to screw this up (Happened to me and a few of my friends) so just double check it to make your life in Korea easier.\n\n**_-Without Alien Registration Card (ARC)_**\n\n If you don’t have your ARC yet, fret not. There are still ways for you to get a SIM card even without it. There are different alternatives such as getting a tourist SIM card from convenience stores but I’m not gonna bore you with obvious options. \n\nThe best way to get a temporary prepaid SIM card without an ARC is to visit the MobilePhoneKorea (MPK) office near Gangnam subway station exit 1. \n<center> \n\n</center>\n\nThe cost of the SIM card? **_FREE!_** On top of that, it comes with a free 10,000KRW credit (equivalent to around 1Gb of data) and can be recharged when needed. Just show them your passport and you’re good to go! I was very skeptical at first and was very worried about hidden obligations attached. However, all my friends and I had no problem with it, and we just threw it away after getting a new SIM card. They also sell displayed model phones at a very discounted price. \n\n*Do check out their Facebook page or website for updated information and location.\nFB page: https://www.facebook.com/mobilephonesinkorea/\nWebsite: http://mp.ckycrew.co.kr/index.htm\n\n**_-With ARC_**\n\nThe 3 main telco companies in South Korea are SKT, KT (Olleh) and LG U+. \n\nThey are found in convenient stores, post offices and even Daiso! You can apply for it online and have the SIM card delivered the next day or physically visit the retails stores.\n<center> \n\n [Image source](http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J3myXVJs5dw/UaVLsZ8eTYI/AAAAAAAAAS4/W-rs-9JsCe8/s1600/gs25cu.png) </center> \n\nFor those who do not need an unlimited mobile plan, I recommend getting a 알뜰폰 plan from either CU or GS25. They provide several mobile plans, with the most marketed one being the plan for 10Gb of data, 100 mins of call and 100 text messages for roughly 20,000KRW. That’s not all. If you apply for one of the supported credit cards (which can be hard for students), you can get a **_huge discount_**! \n\nFor example, if you get a 10Gb plan from GS25 which costs 20,900KRW ($20USD) monthly and pay using a supported credit card, you can get up to a **_whooping 17,000KRW off_** your monthly bill! \n\nHaving said so, only specific cards are supported and they require a minimum monthly spending. In the case of the card mentioned above, the required monthly spending is 300,000KRW (Approx $300USD). This is not really a problem since most of us spend much more than that, I guess? You can check out their website and find out more (Only in Korean):\nGS 25 - https://gs25.uplussave.com/gs/cmmn/index.mhp\nCU - http://www.cjhellodirect.com/cuplan/cuplanInfo.do\n---\n\n# 2. Online Shopping & Groceries\n<center>\n\n [Image source](http://www.englishspectrum.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/online-shopping-korea.jpg) </center>\nBe it shopping for your favorite clothing brand, cosmetic or even groceries, you can get a bang for your bucks if you look at the right place! \n\nI recommend using the mobile apps for all online shopping sites mentioned below to avoid installing softwares on your computer (Yes, a lot of Korean sites require you to install several software before payment can be made)\n\n**Online Options**\n - _Ticketmonster (Tmon): Cheapest household good and groceries_ \n\nThis is my favorite online shopping site for household goods and groceries. \n\nFor groceries, they provide immediate delivery subjected to availability. Usually if you order something at night, you can expect to receive it by the next morning. Delivery is free for purchases over 30,000KRW. They don’t have a wide variety of options here but they have all the necessities at very affordable prices.\nhttp://www.ticketmonster.co.kr/home (Only in Korean)\n<br>\n\n - _Gmarket: English site available_\n\nThis is by far the most foreigner friendly online shopping site in Korea. They have an English site and prices here are pretty competitive too.\nhttp://www.gmarket.co.kr \n<br>\n\n\n - _Danawa: Best for electronics_ \n\nDanawa can be translated to English as “_everything is shown_”. As the name suggests, it compares prices of a product across all online shopping sites in Korea and shows where you can get the best deal. I often use this site when I am buying electronic products since this is literally the \"online version\" of Yongsan Market. \nhttp://www.danawa.com (Only in Korean)\n<br>\n\n - _KakaoTalk: Hidden gems_\n\nWhat? \n\nThey also have an integrated membership card feature with quite a number of partnered retails so you don’t have to always carry all your cards with you. This feature allows you receive digital coupons and sales event information from partnered retail so you will never miss a deal again. \n<br>\n\n - _Payco: All about convenience_ \n\nThis is not a online shopping mall but a payment app. The reason why I recommend this is because you can accumulate cash points when you make payment through this app. The points can then be used to deduct the amount off future purchases. This service is free and you can use it on all online shopping sites and even convenient stores. \n\nAs I’ve mentioned before, Korean sites require you to install a lot of software before payment can be made. If you use Payco, you only need 1 app.\n\n - _Other honorable mentions:_ \nhttp://www.wemakeprice.com\nhttp://www.coupang.com\n---\n\n# 3. Banking and Remittance\n<br><center>\n [Image source](https://blog.aclipse.net/hs-fs/hubfs/Korean%20banks.jpg?t=1535735593737&width=752&name=Korean%20banks.jpg) \n</center>\n\n - _Foreign exchange_\n\nEven though money exchanges have the best foreign exchange rate, banks in Korea have surprisingly good rates too so you don’t have to worry about getting knocked off. KEB Hana bank has the highest foreign exchange rate and they are very foreigner friendly too. They also have staffs who speak different languages so communication is not a problem. \n\nI also recommend exchanging currency in Korea before going overseas as Korea often have higher exchange rates.\n<br>\n\n - _Remittance_\n\nAll the banks in Korea provide foreign remittance service and charge similar fees. | body | <center> </center> South Korea is not the most expensive place to live in, but your finance can definitely get out of hand pretty quickly if its not kept in check. Cheers! |
