| body | An Honest Assessment of Dash, Today’s Hottest Cryptocurrency ash, the cryptocurrency with aspirations of becoming the world’s “digital cash,” has enjoyed an amazing run in recent weeks. From trading under $10 just a few months ago, it recently topped $50. This meteoric rise has brought a lot of attention to Dash, its history, its tech, and its team. Unfortunately, in the crypto world that usually means a whole lot of trolling back-and-forth, with little rational discussion. Dash haters have come out in force, claiming every weakness is proof that Dash is a “scam,” and, in response, some Dash defenders have claimed that Dash has solved every problem inherent in this new technology, and its price can only go up, up, and away. During times of rapid price increases it’s hard to keep the emotions in check, but I hope here to take a step back from the emotions and give my honest assessment of Dash’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as some things surrounding the cryptocurrency that just don’t matter. I don’t know (nor do I care) where the short-term price of Dash will level off; what interests me is its long-term prospects. As background, I owned a small amount of Dash when it was still called Darkcoin (i.e., pre-March 2015), but I started getting truly involved with the project in December 2015 as a result of my frustration with Bitcoin and its unending scaling/governance debate. Dash is now by far my favorite cryptocurrency, but I also hold Bitcoin, Zcash, Monero, and even Litecoin (I’m not even sure why on that one). I am a Dash Masternode owner, and the creator of dashvotetracker.com. I’ve written a number of articles about Dash, and have been interviewed a few times about it. However, I’ve never submitted a proposal to the Dash Budget System, and I’m not part of the “official” Dash team. Overall, I’m happy with the direction of Dash and think it has a promising future, but that doesn’t mean I think it is without weaknesses. Dash Strengths By far Dash’s greatest strength is its Masternode network. This 2nd tier network is what allows Dash to include innovations that Bitcoin can’t currently adopt, including InstantSend, PrivateSend, and the Dash Budget System. Like many Dash supporters, my first love was Bitcoin. I was mesmerized by the genius behind Satoshi’s creation. However, as the Bitcoin project degenerated into warring factions with no end to strife in sight, I found my eyes wandering. Other cryptos had many points in their favor, but Dash’s Masternode network actually addressed the very issues holding Bitcoin back, perhaps even solving them. Doublespending problem? Solved. Privacy concerns? Solved. Ever-increasing time to confirm a transaction? Solved. Lack of a true governance structure? Solved. It’s the built-in governance structure that excites me the most about Dash. Every cryptocurrency has its unique strengths, and they all have their own challenges, but Bitcoin’s problems have proven that a decentralized governance structure is vital for a currency to stay strong. Other cryptocurrency projects claim to have the best technological solution to today’s problems, but Dash offers a built-in means for resolving tomorrow’s problems. Another strength of Dash is its core team. I have great confidence in many members of the core team, including Evan Duffield, Ryan Taylor, Andy Freer, Holger Schinzel, moocowmoo, Fernando Gutierrez, Robert Wiecko, and others. That doesn’t mean I think the core team is perfect (they’ll come up again, under “weaknesses”). But it’s a strong team that has proven to be effective at delivering innovations. Further, unlike other cryptocurrencies’ core teams, it seems wholly interested in improving Dash, not engaging in Reddit fights, censoring opponents, or trolling contributors of other projects. In a word, they are professionals. To me, that matters, because if a cryptocurrency is to succeed in the payments industry, its team has to be as professional as the most successful company. What Fortune 500 business is going to trust a tech project run by someone who spends his days trolling people on Reddit? Grow up. Finally, I find the Dash community to be a strong point in its favor. People such as Amanda Johnson, Tao of Satoshi, and others have done a great job on-boarding people into the Dash community so that they understand how it works and how to use it. Instead of insulting people when they get confused or ask newbie questions (“you didn’t have the correct number of satoshis per byte in your transaction, you idiot!”), the Dash community works hard to bring people up to speed. This is vital for a new technology striving to add new users. Dash Weaknesses Okay, I realize I sound like a fanboy at this point. And the truth is, I am a Dash fanboy. Of all the cryptocurrencies out there, I feel Dash is best positioned to succeed. But the cryptocurrency world is still young, and truthfully, all cryptocurrencies in existence today could still fail. They all have weaknesses that could become death knells. So I don’t think Dash is perfect. I have my concerns, which at this point don’t rise to the level of emergency, but they are concerns, nonetheless. First, I hate the name “Dash.” I realize it’s a take on “digital cash,” but it’s a terrible name. It’s too generic. If you do a google search on “Bitcoin,” guess what comes up first? Bitcoin.org, like it should. If you do a search on “Dash,” the first hit is “ShopDashOnline.com” which is a women’s boutique store. The second hit is a wikipedia article on the punctuation mark “dash.” The cryptocurrency has finally reached Google’s first page, so that’s something. But “Dash” is simply not distinctive enough. Amazon has a product called Dash. Dash is an API Documentation Browser. Heck, there is even a mobile payments app called Dash (that’s gonna be confusing). Admittedly, I didn’t like the Darkcoin name, either, as it appeared to restrict the usage of the cryptocurrency to dark markets. Personally, I would have just stuck with the original “XCoin” name. At this point, a third name change probably isn’t a good idea, but hopefully Dash’s long-term success connects the name with the cryptocurrency in the public consciousness. Another Dash weakness is the Business Development part of the core team. I don’t want to bash individuals here, but the actions of the Business Development team have not inspired my confidence. There have been too many failed projects, and a great deal of wasted money backing those projects. Further, the team has spent too much time and too many resources on relationships with exchanges and other businesses, rather than channeling resources toward actual usage of the currency in the real world. Such real life usage would in turn lead to exchanges and other businesses wanting to integrate Dash. In addition, business development team members have historically been poor at communicating to the Masternode network. At one point, the business development head went AWOL for months, with no explanation when he came back. As a Masternode owner, I currently vote “no” for any and all business development proposals put forward, because I don’t have confidence in the people who are in charge of them. Hopefully, that will change (either the current people regain my confidence, or new people take over). Dash also has the weaknesses you will see in all early-stage projects (and, yes, at three years old, Dash is still “early stage”). For example, there are just not many transactions happening on the Dash blockchain. There are too few merchants who accept Dash, and few people who use it in day-to-day life. This is getting better, but if we are honest with ourselves, we must acknowledge that Dash as “digital cash” is right now almost all potential, not reality. (Of course, the number of Bitcoin transactions at the same time frame in its history was similar). Also, the ownership of the Masternodes I suspect is still pretty top-heavy (I say “suspect” because one cannot know for sure who owns Masternodes). At this point in the Dash life cycle, this doesn’t bother me much, but long-term this needs to change for the health of the network. With the rise of the Dash price, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more Masternodes change hands, as early adopters with many Masternodes cash out some of their profits, and new blood wants to get involved. Dash is also susceptible to weaknesses inherent in all decentralized cryptocurrencies, specifically, how it manages upgrades. Recently, Dash hard-forked its network, and by all accounts, it was a rousing success — miners, Masternodes, and merchants were all able to upgrade without a new coin being created (no “Dash Classic”) or a rancorous dispute with no upgrade occurring, for fear of a split. However, the upgrade took weeks, and during it, certain features, like InstantSend, were disabled. With the low usage of Dash right now this wasn’t an issue, but if Dash wants to serve millions of users as a decentralized “Paypal 2.0,” such a slow upgrade with features disabled would be completely unacceptable. The problem of how to upgrade a decentralized network worldwide seamlessly is inherent in any cryptocurrency, and there are no good answers yet. Hopefully, Dash will be the project that solves this dilemma. What Doesn’t Ultimately Matter I’ve looked at what I consider the strengths and weaknesses of Dash, but I also want to mention a couple of things I think just don’t matter, even if they are often brought up ad nauseam (with emphasis on the “nausea”). The first, and least important, is the “instamine” issue. This refers to the fact that in the first day or so of Dash’s existence around 2 million coins were created — either by accident or on purpose, depending on who you believe. Regardless of its origins, I’ve never found this to be of even the least importance. First, the fact that the founder and first adopters own a lot of coins is true of just about all cryptocurrencies, including the granddaddy of them all, Bitcoin. This is also true of just about any technology early in its life, in fact (see: Bill Gates/Microsoft and Steve Jobs/Apple). If anything, it incentivizes the original founders/adopters to work hard to make the project successful and have their investment pay off (as can be seen in the fact that Evan Duffield is still involved with Dash after three years). I’ve found that most people who complain about the instamine have a childish notion of “fairness.” Or, more accurately, a socialistic notion of fairness (but I guess I repeat myself). They believe that one person’s success or gain “at the expense” of others constitutes an affront to humanity. More likely, they are just sore they aren’t the ones who are successful, and want to take from the rich to give to the poor (i.e., them). I subscribe to the belief that a rising tide lifts all ships. If Evan Duffield is ridiculously rich some day because of the Dash he owns, then that means everyone else involved in Dash is also doing well, and a cryptocurrency exists that is being used by many people. Win/win/win. Ultimately, the instamine has no victims (everyone could have mined Dash early on for very cheap, or invested over the past three years), and it has no impact going forward for the network. It’s a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Another more recent complaint is the possibility of “lazy Masternodes,” which are servers set up to respond to Masternode pings but not actually performing Masternode services for the network. While theoretically possible, there is very little incentive today to create lazy Masternodes — after all, you still need to have a 1,000 Dash collateral and an actual Masternode isn’t expensive to operate. Going forward, I can see lazy Masternodes being a problem if Dash is being used by millions of people, making Masternodes costly to operate. However, this is simply something that the development team can fix in the future; it’s not a showstopper problem. And with the core team’s development track record and Dash’s ability to upgrade, I’m confident it can do so before it becomes a significant problem. |

| body | ------1-----. Mario Testino - Famous Photographers Mario Testino (was born on October 30, 1954) is a Peruvian fashion photographer. His work has been featured in magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair. One of fashion's most sought-after snappers, Mario Testino was born in 1954 in Lima, Peru. He came to London in 1976, took a flat in an abandoned hospital near Trafalgar Square, and began selling portfolios (for £25, including hair and make-up) to wannabe models. Today he is best known for his highly polished, exotically bright ad campaigns and his exquisitely styled photographs of the couture scene all of which carry a deceptive air of nonchalance. Now at the top of his profession, Testino has shot Madonna for Versace as well as photographing the late Diana, Princess of Wales for her famous Vanity Fair cover in 1997. His popularity with designers and fashion editors stems as much from his professionalism and good nature as his unerring ability to take beautiful pictures which sell clothes. -------2------. Steve Mccurry - Famous Photographers Steve McCurry was born on February 24, 1950 in Pennsylvania, attended Penn State University. Steve McCurry (born February 24, 1950) is an American photojournalist best known for his photograph, "Afghan Girl" that originally appeared in National Geographic magazine. He originally planned to study cinematography and filmmaking, but ended up getting a degree in theater arts and graduating in 1974. He became interested in photography when he started taking pictures for the Penn State newspaper The Daily Collegian. After working at Today's Post in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania for two years, he left for India to freelance. It was here that McCurry learned to watch and wait on life. “If you wait,” he realized, “people will forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view.” -------3-------. Timothy Hogan - Famous Photographers Timothy Hogan is an award-winning luxury goods and still life photographer and director working in New York, Los Angeles, and London. Timothy Hogan’s driven self-motivation keeps him on his own two feet. As a photographer, director, cinematographer, and avid surfer, he is a jack of all trades, working with global clients on everything but the kitchen sink – from still life, to film, to fashion. He recently produced a collection of photos entitled, “The FIN Project” that merges his love for still life and an obsession with surfing with the goal of exposing “the shape of the wave… and the way a quarter of an inch can make a dog into a ‘magic’ board.” Few photographers have chronicled surfboard fins, and Hogan has breached the topic, with a mix of modern and old architecture – some wood, some color, each one with its own distinct aura. The photos remind us of how the simplicity of objects can become in their own way, beautiful masterpieces. -------4------- julien roumagnac His way of photography is one of a kind. Julien knows how to emphasize drama with the use of his wide angled lens combined with his amazing editing skills. Although he hasn’t uploaded anything lately, I still scroll through his portfolio a lot. As I said before, you can learn a lot by only using your eyes and ask yourself the question what is good about the photo. Some keywords that describe his way of photography perfectly are: dramatic, mystic & urbex. -----5----- max rive Just like his grandfather, he has always been passioned about mountains. When he was 5 years old he was already fascinated by the 100 meter high hills in his home country the Netherlands. A few years later he was the ‘’mountain guide’’ for his parents and brother in the Alps. For me he is the best landscape photographer I know off! The atmosphere in his photos are fenomenal and I recognize his work. A true inspiration! -----6----- roumagnac Roumagnac is the brother of Julien Roumagnac (1 in this top 10). Like his brother he has not uploaded new work lately, but his old work is still really good! His way of photography can be described as a nod to reality. A perfect example that good post treatment can emphasize drama. Like he says on his website: “As you probably have noticed, I give much importance to the shooting at post treatment. In the end, the picture is not necessarily a faithful representation of reality but rather my vision of the moment …“ -----7----- kim holtermand Kim Høltermand is an award winning, photographer focusing mainly on architecture and landscape. He works for many big clients/company’s and there is a reason for that. His work is one of a kind! He perfectly knows how to use lines. The keywords minimalism, stylish and modern describe his way of photography perfectly. |

| body | 1. The Big Sick I’m a sucker for charming movies, and The Big Sick is like injecting pure charm directly into your veins. The story of the burgeoning relationship between actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani (who plays himself) and Emily V. Gordon (played here by the always-reliable Zoe Kazan) sometimes seems almost too crazy to be true, but tapping into and utilizing that truth is what separates this movie from every other romantic comedy. There’s a specificity here that means nobody else could have brought this story to life, and similar to the best episodes of Master of None, the scenes involving Kumail’s family of immigrants provide audiences with a window into a way of life that our popular culture has thus far largely ignored. If you’re looking for an alternative to bombastic summer blockbusters and prefer movies with characters you can care deeply about, look no further. This is an antidote to filmmaking-by-committee. It’s a personal, moving story that left me feeling rejuvenated about the potential of film to tell impactful and vital stories, and although it deals with some heavy subject matter, the comedy and abundance of charisma from everyone involved left me walking out of the theater on a joyous high. The Big Sick contains an absolutely perfect mixture of heartbreak and hilarity, and I truly think our country would be a better place if everyone who lived here watched it. 2. War For the Planet of the Apes I don’t think I’ve ever been more wrong about how much I’d ultimately like a trilogy than with this new incarnation of the Apes movies. I begrudgingly saw 2011’s Rise thinking it’d be passable at best, but I was surprised at how good it turned out; since then, director Matt Reeves took over and stepped things up in a huge way with his two sequels, capping off one of the best cinematic trilogies of the modern era. The team at WETA Digital has outdone themselves again by creating versions of the ape characters that look so real I didn’t doubt them for a second, and although I appreciated the human element more in 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, it almost doesn’t matter because humans aren’t the main characters in this franchise anyway. This is a mythical, Biblical film that grapples with some big themes, but it never loses its way in all of that ambition; it remains grounded by its empathetic approach to storytelling, and its anti-war message and condemnation of toxic masculinity is a vital thing for our country to experience right now. And hey, Academy: just give Andy Serkis his damn Oscar already. 3. Get Out Anyone who had seen a few episodes of the Comedy Central series Key & Peele knew Jordan Peele was a stand-out writer and performer, but I don’t think anyone could have foreseen just how good Get Out was going to be. Peele’s social horror thriller became a full-blown sensation earlier this year, and for good reason: it’s a movie that explores what it means to be black in America right now, and takes down the faux modern liberalism that would lead people to say things like “I would have voted for Obama for a third term if I could have.” It’s genuinely scary at times, but also relatable in its premise: everyone understands the uneasiness that comes with meeting their significant other’s parents for the first time. Peele also infuses comedic moments without ever tipping the film over into full-on comedy territory; he shows a masterful control of tone here, and you know what’s even more impressive? This is Peele’s feature directorial debut. He’s been a talented performer for years, but he’s just getting started as a cinematic storyteller, and I think the entire cinephile community is looking forward to seeing what subjects he tackles next. 4. Wonder Woman With the disappointing taste of movies like Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad still fresh in our mouths, there was all the reason in the world to doubt that Wonder Woman would be the saving grace of the DC Extended Universe. But against all odds, that’s exactly what director Patty Jenkins delivered: this is a rousing action movie with a soulful, compassionate character at its center who actually cares about saving people (which seems like a requisite for being a superhero, but you’d be surprised). Gal Gadot’s Diana is a strong female character that doesn’t feel like a typical Hollywood “strong female character,” if you know what I mean. Yes, she kicks some serious ass on the battlefield, but she’s also a fully fleshed-out character who has her own goals, desires, and feelings; it’s embarrassing that it took Warner Bros. this long to provide the world with a movie like this, but it turned out to be exactly what many people needed in a dark time. The CGI-heavy final battle loses some luster, but the fact that this movie feels like it’s actually about something makes up for many of its shortcomings. And how awesome was Chris Pine? 5. I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore Ruth (Melanie Lynskey), a downtrodden nurse, feels crushed under the weight of humanity’s collectively terrible behavior. She’s always suffering little indignities, like being cut in line or having a book ruined for her, but when she returns home one day to discover she’s been burgled and the police don’t lift a finger to help her, she snaps and takes matters into her own hands. Recruiting the help of a socially awkward karate enthusiast named Tony (Elijah Wood), Ruth attempts to track down her stolen belongings and descends into the criminal underworld. It’s not even so much about retrieving her items as it is about proving a point to the bad guys: why can’t everyone just stop being an asshole? In his directorial debut, writer/director Macon Blair – who’s starred in movies like Green Room and Blue Ruin – proves he has just as much talent behind the camera as he does in front of it. I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore is a mixture of buddy comedy (a dark, understated humor permeates the whole movie) and detective story, and the shocking bursts of violence that are interspersed throughout have a profound impact on these characters. Every bullet fired or broken bone means something, and in direct contrast with something like John Wick: Chapter 2, we feel every shot just as much as they do. It definitely has me excited to see what Blair does next. 6. Spider-Man: Homecoming Our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has finally returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and though there are plenty of connections to the MCU with Iron Man and Happy Hogan, Homecoming strikes a nice balance between the requisite set pieces and telling a scaled down story about what Peter Parker’s day to day life is like when he’s in high school. This is the Spider-Man we know from the comics, the kid who has to struggle with how to talk to the girl he likes and then worry about surviving a scrape with a super villain. There’s a part of this film in which those two aspects intersect, and the resulting scene ranks among the most tense scenes in superhero movie history. I’m shocked that a staggering six credited writers were able to string together something that ultimately turned out so well, since we’ve seen tons of mega-budget movies fall to pieces with too many cooks in the kitchen. But under the guidance of producer Kevin Feige, director Jon Watts was able to wield Tom Holland’s boyish charm like a weapon and create something fans have been waiting for since the 1960s: a Spider-Man movie with a spot-on portrayal of the webslinger at its center. 7. Baby Driver Baby Driver, Edgar Wright’s rapid-fire, music-driven, car chase passion project, is practically oozing with cool. Its protagonist, Baby (Ansel Elgort), who works as a getaway driver for a mob boss (Kevin Spacey), sounds like…well, like an Edgar Wright character: Baby creates remixes out of everyday sounds in his normal life and constantly listens to music on his old iPod to drown out tinnitus that’s constantly ringing in his ears. He has a song for every occasion, whether it be a bank robbery getaway or simply a walk to the nearest coffee shop. He’s the best driver in the business (who, naturally, is looking to do “one last job” before he gets out of the game for good), and like the movie itself, he radiates an almost effortless sense of grace and slickness. The supporting cast, which includes Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Eiza Gonzalez, and Jon Bernthal, are all varying degrees of good, but Elgort stands in the spotlight with Lily James, who plays his diner waitress love interest; this is their fairy tale, and it’s one hell of a ride. Baby Driver is a toe-tapping heist movie that’s meticulously edited to fit its soundtrack, resulting in a unique twist on a well-trod genre that’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. 8. John Wick: Chapter 2 The first John Wick was fun, but John Wick: Chapter 2 does everything a great sequel should do: it deepens our understanding of the protagonist, addresses the consequences of the events of the first movie, expands the franchise’s mythology, and takes the action to the next level with inventive, jaw-dropping sequences that made me suppress the urge to pump my fist with excitement in the theater. Keanu Reeves totally owns this character, and the way director Chad Stahelski shoots the action – with an eye for wide shots and clear choreography and a limited number of edits – is the perfect match for Reeves’ physicality, which is on full display here as his character endures beating after beating while trying to complete his mission and retire peacefully. I love the way this series honors its rules and mythos, and by the end when you realize that much (if not all) of the homeless population in New York City are actually undercover assassins, it makes perfect sense as something that would happen in this heightened world. Common absolutely crushes it as one of Wick’s antagonists, and the non-stop action beats (chases, fist fights, and headshots, oh my!) make this movie a far more intense experience than its predecessor. I can’t wait for John Wick: Chapter 3. 9. Logan From its opening frames, James Mangold’s Logan tells the audience exactly what kind of movie we’re in for: “fuck” is the first word spoken, and it’s not long until Wolverine (Hugh Jackman, playing the character for the final time after 17 years) is slicing off arms and stabbing his adamantium claws through skulls. But this is a different version of the character than the one we know: Logan is beaten, bruised, drunk, and desperate, and tasked with protecting an aging, forgetful Professor X (Patrick Stewart) who becomes more dangerous as he loses more of his faculties. Dafne Keen is excellent as the coiled young mutant Laura, who we learn is Logan’s daughter, and the film becomes a Western-inspired meditation on family, religion, aging, and legacy as the trio embarks on a cross-country trip toward Eden. Logan is arguably the most violent R-rated superhero movie ever made, but amid all of the head stabbings and dismemberment, it’s also a moving conclusion for a character who has spent so many years broken, lonely, and helpless. It’s a truly fitting send-off for one of superhero cinema’s most iconic characters, and features one of the best final shots of any superhero movie to date. 10. The Little Hours The Little Hours may be best known as the “nuns going wild” movie, but Jeff Baena’s period piece, set in a 14th century convent, is about more than just sex and swearing. Sure, there’s plenty of that going on, but this movie is also a fascinating exploration of desire and hypocrisy. It stars a who’s who of awesome people from beloved TV comedies – Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Kate Micucci, Dave Franco, Nick Offerman, Fred Armisen, Molly Shannon, John C. Reilly, and Adam Pally – and has a surprisingly sweet heart at its center. But the real reason this movie makes the list is that it’s one of the few comedies I’ve seen recently that actually had me laughing out loud all the way through. Film is subjective, but comedies may be the most subjective genre of them all, so your mileage may vary. But I’m admittedly difficult to please when it comes to comedies, so the fact that this movie had me cracking up throughout says a lot. The writing and the performances – which range from deadpan to completely outrageous – are top notch, and though the film flails a bit near the end, it’s still well worth checking out. (With 2017 halfway over, the /Film staff will be spending this week compiling lists of the best movies they’ve seen this year. In order to be eligible for the list, a film they’ve seen simply has to have a 2017 release date, even if they saw it early at a festival or early screening. First up: here are Ben Pearson’s top 10 movies of 2017 so far.) I have not spent nearly enough time this year seeking out the types of smaller movies I tend to love, and frankly, I’m a little embarrassed that three superhero movies made the cut on my list of favorites so far. But damn it, they’re really good superhero movies, and as ashamed as I am that my list isn’t as “cool” as it might be if I’d spent more time at my local arthouse theater, these are the movies I’ve seen so far in 2017 that spoke to me the most in one way or another. The good news is that I’m guessing only a couple of these will end up on my favorite movies of the year list when December rolls around, so at least you’ll be getting some variation if you compare that list with this one. Enough preamble: join me in counting down my favorite movies of the year so far as we hit the halfway point of 2017. |

"body": "1. The Big Sick\nI’m a sucker for charming movies, and The Big Sick is like injecting pure charm directly into your veins. The Big Sick contains an absolutely perfect mixture of heartbreak and hilarity, and I truly think our country would be a better place if everyone who lived here watched it.\n\n2. War For the Planet of the Apes\nI don’t think I’ve ever been more wrong about how much I’d ultimately like a trilogy than with this new incarnation of the Apes movies. And hey, Academy: just give Andy Serkis his damn Oscar already.\n\n3. Get Out\nAnyone who had seen a few episodes of the Comedy Central series Key & Peele knew Jordan Peele was a stand-out writer and performer, but I don’t think anyone could have foreseen just how good Get Out was going to be. He’s been a talented performer for years, but he’s just getting started as a cinematic storyteller, and I think the entire cinephile community is looking forward to seeing what subjects he tackles next.\n\n4. Wonder Woman\nWith the disappointing taste of movies like Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad still fresh in our mouths, there was all the reason in the world to doubt that Wonder Woman would be the saving grace of the DC Extended Universe. And how awesome was Chris Pine?\n\n5. I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore\nRuth (Melanie Lynskey), a downtrodden nurse, feels crushed under the weight of humanity’s collectively terrible behavior. It definitely has me excited to see what Blair does next.\n\n6. Spider-Man: Homecoming\nOur friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has finally returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and though there are plenty of connections to the MCU with Iron Man and Happy Hogan, Homecoming strikes a nice balance between the requisite set pieces and telling a scaled down story about what Peter Parker’s day to day life is like when he’s in high school. But under the guidance of producer Kevin Feige, director Jon Watts was able to wield Tom Holland’s boyish charm like a weapon and create something fans have been waiting for since the 1960s: a Spider-Man movie with a spot-on portrayal of the webslinger at its center.\n\n7. Baby Driver\nBaby Driver, Edgar Wright’s rapid-fire, music-driven, car chase passion project, is practically oozing with cool. Baby Driver is a toe-tapping heist movie that’s meticulously edited to fit its soundtrack, resulting in a unique twist on a well-trod genre that’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.\n\n8. John Wick: Chapter 2\nThe first John Wick was fun, but John Wick: Chapter 2 does everything a great sequel should do: it deepens our understanding of the protagonist, addresses the consequences of the events of the first movie, expands the franchise’s mythology, and takes the action to the next level with inventive, jaw-dropping sequences that made me suppress the urge to pump my fist with excitement in the theater. I can’t wait for John Wick: Chapter 3.\n\n9. Logan\nFrom its opening frames, James Mangold’s Logan tells the audience exactly what kind of movie we’re in for: “fuck” is the first word spoken, and it’s not long until Wolverine (Hugh Jackman, playing the character for the final time after 17 years) is slicing off arms and stabbing his adamantium claws through skulls. It’s a truly fitting send-off for one of superhero cinema’s most iconic characters, and features one of the best final shots of any superhero movie to date.\n\n10. The Little Hours\nThe Little Hours may be best known as the “nuns going wild” movie, but Jeff Baena’s period piece, set in a 14th century convent, is about more than just sex and swearing. The writing and the performances – which range from deadpan to completely outrageous – are top notch, and though the film flails a bit near the end, it’s still well worth checking out.\n\n(With 2017 halfway over, the /Film staff will be spending this week compiling lists of the best movies they’ve seen this year. In order to be eligible for the list, a film they’ve seen simply has to have a 2017 release date, even if they saw it early at a festival or early screening. First up: here are Ben Pearson’s top 10 movies of 2017 so far.)\n\nI have not spent nearly enough time this year seeking out the types of smaller movies I tend to love, and frankly, I’m a little embarrassed that three superhero movies made the cut on my list of favorites so far. Enough preamble: join me in counting down my favorite movies of the year so far as we hit the halfway point of 2017.\n",

| body | Transgender service members and veterans were dismayed by President Trump’s tweets Wednesday announcing a ban on transgender individuals serving in the military, but some say they doubt the prohibition will take effect. “Overall, I’m hopeful,” said Madison Holderegger, 23, a transwoman currently serving in the Wyoming Army National Guard. “The outlook seems good that this isn’t something that’s going to actually go through.” In the tweets, Trump said the ban was due to the increased medical cost of transgender service members, though the RAND Corp. report commissioned by the Pentagon last year listed the cost at no more than $8 million per year. Holderegger said she was stunned by Trump’s reasoning, as she — as well as a few others she knows in the National Guard who are transitioning — has been paying for her transition without help from the military. “It’s a big blow. It hurts a lot,” Holderegger said. “Personally, me and a few other of the transgender people I know in the National Guard, we’re paying for our transition out of pocket, and to hear that we’re being kicked out due to budget issues, it’s pretty disheartening.” STORY FROM LENDINGTREE Reverse mortgage: Worth the risk? “I’ve served for four and a half years and I have never been an issue, and now I am for this?” Holderegger continued. Read more: Trump seeks to ban transgender people from serving in U.S. military 'in any capacity' Chelsea Manning, progressive and LGBTQ groups slam President Trump's transgender ban Accept transgender troops, allow them medical treatment, Adm. Mike Mullen tells Congress Matthew (Emily) Mol, 32, a chief petty officer in the Navy, is transitioning to female and trying to focus on moving forward. “My initial reaction has always been somewhat reserved and today was no different. It’s a tweet, not an order,” Mol said. He said he would contact his representatives but would comply with whatever orders are issued. “I’m not happy with it of course, but that’s the point: We do what we’re told. We serve honorably and we serve.” Veteran Emma Shinn, 41, said she is appalled by the president’s tweets, and sees them as a painful distraction. “I’m absolutely disgusted. I think it's using transgender service members as a political pawn to distract from the ongoing issues the admin has,” Shinn said. Still, others fear what could happen, especially considering how frequently the president uses Twitter. Frankie Perez, who recently ended his decade of service to go to college, said the news of the ban did not come exactly as a surprise to him because he doesn’t believe the Trump administration has been supportive of the LGBTQ community. “I know it was just a tweet — it’s not anything in policy yet — but that has a lot of influence,” Perez said. “The administration all believes in a lot of the same things, so if Trump is tweeting about it, it could become policy.” Former Navy lieutenant commander Brynn Tannehill, 42, who now works as a defense analyst, believes the policy is wrongheaded. “I’m shocked that they’re doing this,” Tannehill said. “It’s hard to see what can be gained by doing great harm to people who simply want to serve their country and who have been for decades. How does this do right by transgender people serving today? How does it do right by serving our military? It doesn’t.” It is not clear what will happen to transgender troops currently serving, but if the tweets do become policy, Tannehill said it will cause a greater disturbance to the military than anything else. “We have transgender people filling critical roles everywhere,” Tannehill said. “If you remove them from their units now, it will disrupt their ability to do their jobs.” Ultimately, what veterans like Perez want is to be treated equally with respect. “I just want everyone to know that we’re literally just like everyone else, just doing our jobs," Perez said. “We don’t want to be the center of attention or anything. There’s nothing more to that.” |
