      "body": "We’ve been exploring 1 Timothy 4:6-10 and looking at discipline keys that lead to godliness. We’ve said that discipline is the pathway to freedom and what separates dreamers from doers. It’s not easy. \n\nWhen you train, you are denying yourself something that you may want. But there is a higher goal. That’s why Paul says, “for to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God…”\n\nThe words used here are important. \nToil means strenuous labor. Something that saps energy, that drains you. Training for godliness demands energy. It demands hard work on our part. \n\nLike when an athlete gives it his all, he expends the last ounce of energy to reach his goal. Like when you finish a hard day’s work in the yard, or on the job, and you are thoroughly exhausted at the end of it all. That’s the kind of energy we must put in to our spiritual walk. \n\nStrive means “agonize”. Again, it’s an athletic term. And you should want to and desire to if you are in Christ. \n\nFollowing Jesus is not easy! Jesus said to follow him you have to die! There’s nothing easy about that! And truth be told, we don’t want that!\n\nI remember a seeing a book titled, “Everyone Wants To Go to Heaven But Nobody Wants to Die.” And that’s a truism.\n\nHere is the beauty of the freedom that discipline gains for us:\n<strong>You die to what you want to do in order to live for what Christ has gained for you!</strong>\n\nPaul says, He is worth it. He is worth expending ourselves, wasting ourselves away for. He is the ultimate prize. He is our hope. He is the Living God, the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.\n\nWhat would it look like if we all disciplined ourselves for godliness this year? \nWhat kind of people would we be?\nWhat kind of impact would we have in our community if our highest pursuit was godliness?\n\nI pray that we all get to find out!",

      "body": "Jonathan Edwards was one of America's greatest theologians. Over his lifetime he came up with thousands of resolutions that he sought to follow. He later narrowed them down to 70. He purposed to read them over at least once a week and try to live them out practically. They are lofty and eloquent, since they were written in the 1700's the language is a little cumbersome. Nevertheless, they are quite inspirational. We’ve said that discipline is the pathway to freedom and what separates dreamers from doers. Gotta love it!\n<p>\nSomeone has said that these things aren’t training machines, they’re trying machines. They're for trying not training. They’re for taking shortcuts to fitness, not discipline. And in the Christian life, there are no shortcuts to spiritual maturity. Paul is talking about training here not trying. The discipline that leads to godliness is about rigorous, intense, concentrated, energetic training.\n<p>\nTraining requires a rearrangement of our lives around certain practices that will enable us to do what we cannot do now by willpower alone. If you want to run a marathon, you’ve got to train for it or you’ll die! If you want to enter a fitness competition, you’ve got to train. If you want to excel in your career or profession, you’ve got to be disciplined in learning and growing the skill sets necessary to succeed.\n<p>\nTraining and discipline shapes you—it changes you.\n<p>\nGodly habits would not appear without determined human purpose and effort. The Greek athlete had to refuse certain things, eat the right food, and do the right exercises to compete. \n<p>\nAs Christians, we need to have that same mindset, we need to do the spiritual exercises that will yield the desired fruit of godliness in our lives. \n<p>\nAnd no one wakes up trained. No one stumbles in to health and fitness. No one wakes up one day and is elite athlete. It takes discipline, routine, and determination. \n<p>\nIf a Christian puts as much energy and discipline into his spiritual life as an athlete does to compete in their chosen sport or game, think about the kind of growth the Christian would experience. \n<p>\nThe athlete has drills, exercises, and routines that lead him toward the greater goal of fitness and conditioning, strength, speed or agility. \n<p>\nIn the same manner, prayer, Bible study, Scripture memorization, fasting, self-examination, service, fellowship, and other disciplines are not ends in and of themselves, they are means to the desired spiritual maturity that every Christian should aspire to. \n<p>\nJust because God has promised to make us like Christ does not mean we can neglect the very things that in practice help to bring that about.\n<p>\nHere are two intentional things I think every Christian needs to do for spiritual training: Bible reading and prayer. \n<p>\n<strong>a) Bible reading</strong>Pick a reading plan if that helps you and stick to it. Even when you don’t feel like it. That is what will help you cultivate the habit. \n<p>\n<strong>b) Prayer</strong>You need to plan to pray. Set a calendar alert on your smartphone. \n<p>\nThat which is done repetitively becomes a habit. What becomes a habit will get repeated.\n<p>\nThe Discipline that leads to godliness is also:\n\n<h2>3) Purposeful</h2>\nPaul says that physical training has some value,  it has some benefit, but it’s largely relegated to the physical realm. He’s not saying it has no value, he’s just saying it’s not the superior value.\n<p>\nOur bodies are God’s temples and are to be used for His glory and in His service. \n(1 Cor. 6:19-20; Romans 12:1-2)\n <p>\nHowever, discipline that leads to godliness—that has exceedingly great value. That has great purpose. The pursuit of godliness, and godliness itself shows its superiority because it offers advantages in two realms. It has benefits in this life and the one to come.\n<p>\nGodliness affects everything in our life: our view of self, our marriage, our parenting, business, how we work, our relationships— everything. \n<p>\nGodliness has deep value and purpose. That is why we must discipline ourselves towards godliness. That’s why we need to practice the things that produce godliness in our life. \n<p>\nSo we are to minor in physical exercise and major in godliness. We should see that godliness represents a higher priority than physical training. Godliness has the potential of impacting all of our actions, experiences and relationships for good. \n<p>\nIn the next post, I’ll share the final key. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n</html>",

      "body": "In the last post we looked at how everything in life benefits from discipline. It is a pathway to freedom and success in just about everything you want to achieve in life. It’s true in all of our earthly and natural endeavors and it holds true in our spiritual ones as well. If we want to grow in our spiritual walk with the Lord it will require discipline. \n\n![Discipline_Godliness_part2.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSYz3K9G2wuQ8cpHRKdpoRZn9gEPWUhnPmKEeHdA6UEfG/Discipline_Godliness_part2.jpg)\n\n<strong>1 Timothy 4:6-10</strong> says, If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.\n\nThis passage holds some keys for us as it relates to discipline. If you read the first few verses of this chapter, you will discover that Paul was exhorting Timothy, who was the pastor of the church at Ephesus, to watch out for those that were teaching bad doctrine. They were teaching things that were contrary to the gospel of Jesus Christ. \n\nSo here’s our first key. The Discipline that leads to godliness is:\n<h2>1) Tethered to Good Doctrine — it provides the guard rails for discipline. </h2>\n\nThe thing is that good doctrine has an arch-enemy. Every superhero has a corresponding arch-nemesis. Well, for good doctrine and right teaching there are opposing teachings of demons and irreverent, silly myths. That is what every good teacher and student of the Bible has to contend with. \n\nPaul appealed to Timothy to reject these false teachings. He told him that some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to these erroneous teachings. These empty and false ideas were to be rejected by the true Christian. \n\nSome of the things that he mentions in this passage was an ascetic lifestyle, a lifestyle of abstinence for certain things that promised some spiritual elitism. In our day in age there is  no shortage of bad teaching. We have access to so much via podcasts and webcasts that we need to be on guard against continually for teaching that could lead us down the wrong path—away from the true gospel. \n\nPaul encourages Timothy that to become an excellent minister he must both reject these teachings and to continue to nourish himself on the truths and teachings of Christianity that he had come to know. \n\nHe says to Timothy, “If you put these things before the brothers…”, that meant that as a pastor he needed to expose the errors. And further he says to him, \"you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed.” That meant Timothy had to practice the truth that he knew. \n\nGood doctrine matters. Good theology matters. I can’t stress that enough. \n\nMichael Jordan, arguably one of the greatest basketball players ever, had this to say about mastering the fundamentals of the game. “You can practice shooting eight hours a day, but if your technique is wrong, then all you become is very good at shooting the wrong way. Spiritual discipline must be tethered to good, sound doctrine so we don’t slip away from the moorings of the faith. To be able to discern the false from the true, we need to be solidly, grounded in the truth of God from His Word. \n\nWe don’t want to get real good at practicing the wrong doctrine. \n\nThe writer of Hebrews had this strong rebuke to some Christians found in <strong>Hebrews 5:11-14.</strong>\n“About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have come dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment <strong>TRAINED by CONSTANT PRACTICE</strong> to distinguish good from evil.”\n\nHere’s where this is important when it comes to discipline, if I get the gospel wrong, then I think that my Bible reading, prayer, and fasting becomes a means of obtaining grace from God and favor from God. The more I pray, the more God likes me. The more I fast, the more God will have to respond to my petition for something. \n\nSpiritual discipline is not a means of obtaining grace — it is a grace!\n\nIf I get the gospel right, then I know that these disciplines are a means to draw me closer to God, to love and cherish him more, because I have a desire to please him, knowing that I am already loved and accepted by him. \n\nThe discipline is a means — not an end.\n\n—How is your knowledge of the Word of God?\n—Would you be able to discern good doctrine from false doctrine?",
