| body | In the process of setting up a fresh new web application project this week, I decided to give Amazon Web Services another try. I had dabbled in it before, but it's a pretty hefty service, and at the time I just didn't have the extra resources and energy to dig in too far. If you aren't familiar, AWS is (in part) a "web hosting" service. I say that with quotes because it's actually WAY more than I can get into here. But for the purposes of this article, AWS in this context is simply a cloud-based server virtualization platform. My goal was simple: Take the bits of the new application I had already completed locally (really just the UI wireframe of the app, at this point), and get it out onto a server where the client can view it, and at the same time implement source control via bitbucket so that I can make changes and push them out to a central repository... and, since I'm dreaming, make it so that if I take a repo push a certain way, it will trigger the deployment scripts and push the app out to the server where the client can see the updates. Now, I already run my own hosting service, with VPSs from a very well known ColdFusion-knowledgable datacenter. But I've been considering all of the benefits that AWS has to offer, and the potential to spend a lot less every month for the pleasure. AWS has been on a lot of job offers lately - experience with it seems to be expected more than ever these days. I recently came off a project where AWS was in use, but because I was not a designated server admin, I was not exposed to the service directly. But the means by which they were putting code into source control and doing deployments was intruiging and I have wanted to do it myself on my projects for a while. I have one other client where I set it up, but using my own servers. So with this project, i started by setting up my AWS account, and discovered that if I use one of their smallest EC2 linux-based server instances, it was FREE for an entire YEAR. Up to 30GB of storage, unlimited bandwidth. Small amount of memory and CPU, but more than sufficient for what amounts to a demonstration of the front end of a web app with no data or real processing going on. (For the record, the app is a ColdFusion/Lucee app, with CFWheels as the underying framework). My first attempt, I spend a day learning all about it and experimenting with an instance I created, based on RHEL. Within 5 minutes I had a server up and running and responding to web requests. But my attempts to configure Apache and Lucee, and getting an SSL certificate running, were a failure. I was fine with it; this was, after all, my very first attempt. The overall result was, "I definitely want to learn more!" Mainly because the admin interface that AWS offers is pretty stellar. So that evening, after pretty much screwing up most of the config files, I terminated the machine and it disappeared from my account. Now, I had originally used an Amazon AMI to set up the RHEL machine instance. The AMI was offered directly by Amazon, so I felt I could trust it. And, it was free. But there are zillions of AMIs, both from Amazon and from third parties, both free and for pay. So I set out looking for an AMI that was already configured with Lucee on it, to jump start my progress for round two. Sure enough, I found one, and not only was it the latest version of Lucee, but it was also running on the same server OS that my current servers are using: CentOS 7. Score! I created an image from that AMI and fired it up. It took some time to poke around and see how they had configured Apache and Lucee, and they didn't leave much as far as instructions go. But in about an hour, I was able to set up a new website on the machine. When I had it working as far as I needed, I took a "snapshop" of it, using the AWS admin interface. I did this so that in the worst case scenario, I could roll back to a known-good starting point. This would turn out to be a good move, because I once again tried to set up an SSL certificate, this time using "Let's Encrypt", who provides a set of scripts to sorta automate the creation and installation of a cert. But it failed, AND it broke my install, so that the website that was working no longer did. Rolled back to the snapshot in a matter of about 3 minutes and picked up where I left off! I opted to use CloudFlare as a frontend proxy, and they offer SSL certs at no cost, so I ended up going that route for now... because I wanted to move on to source control and webhooks. I had already pushed my project up from my local machine to a bitbucket repo, so all i needed to do was pull the current master branch from the repo, into the web directory of my new AWS server. After playing with some SSH keys, it worked just fine. The next step was to take some existing deployment scripts that i had copied into my web app, and modify them so that when I pushed code up to the repo from my dev machine, it would automatically trigger a call to a URL on the AWS server, which would run the GIT script that would pull the latest branch and update the code that was in production. After modifying my scripts, I made a code change, pushed it up to the repo, and moments later i got the email that i configured on my live AWS website, indicating that the deployment script had executed. Next, I decided that since I was already in this area of the code, I would see if I could fine-tune the deployment, so that NOT EVERY PUSH to the repo would trigger a deployment to production. This is important because by default, bitbucket runs the webhooks no matter WHAT branch you are pushing to... so if you have a master branch that always represents your production environment, you might have a development branch... and based off that, you might have feature branches, release branches, bug fix branches, and more... by multiple people. Pushing to THOSE branches also runs the webhook, and those pushes certainly shouldn't cause the production enviornment to be updated. So, git "tagging" to the rescue. My goal became "Since I know the webhook is going to call my deployment scripts ALL the time, I need to use the additional payload that bitbucket sends WITH those calls, and look for a specific tag before I actually call the script that pulls from the master branch to production." I settled on a convention: First, you develop your code, do your commits, and push up to the origin master branch as you see fit. Nothing happens on the production server. Then, when all your commits are in (and if you're in a team, their commits are in too), and they are all tested and working, you decide that you now have a "release" so you increment your application's patch or minor point version, and the release notes that go with it, and commit. Then, you tag that commit with "release_vX.X.X" and push it to master. BitBucket runs the webhook as it always does with each push, and this time, the tag is included in the payload. The deployment scripts on the server check the payload, and since there's a tag with a name that starts with "release_", THAT triggers the actual deployment of the code from BitBucket into the production server. This could be further modified, so that more scripts are run to update a database schema, etc. This is a great way to work, EVEN IF YOU ARE THE SOLE DEVELOPER. As far as the different ways you can work with GIT and BitBucket (or github or whatever), that's outside the scope of this post. For the record, I've chosen the "OneFlow" methodology for what I'm doing. More information here: http://endoflineblog.com/oneflow-a-git-branching-model-and-workflow But if you are opting to stick with your own schema or the ubiquitous "GitFlow" methods, nothing changes... you still want to limit actual deployments to production for when YOU are ready to have them happen, monitor their results, and test. This works for big or small teams, and doesn't require any other third party apps like Jenkins, so it's a fast startup with a smaller learning curve. I am providing a sample webhook script below; you can tear it apart and modify it to your heart's content. Ask any questions you like, I'll help when I'm around! ``` <!--- add to your bitbucket repository's PUSH webhooks as: http://www.example.com/bitbucket-webhook.cfm?action=deployProduction ---> <cfset strJson = ""> <cfset strName = ""> <cfset boolDeployToProduction = "false"> <cftry> <cfset strJson = toString( getHTTPRequestData().content )> <cfset strJson = ReplaceNoCase( strJson, "payload=", "", "ALL" )> <cfset strJson = URLDecode( strJson )> <cfset objJson = DeserializeJSON( strJson )> <cftry> <cfset strName = objJson.push.changes[1].new.name> <cfcatch></cfcatch> </cftry> <cfsavecontent variable="html"> <cfdump var="#strName#" expand="true"> <cfdump var="#strJson#" expand="false"> </cfsavecontent> <cffile action = "write" file = "#GetDirectoryFromPath(GetCurrentTemplatePath())#webhook_result.htm" output = "#html#"> <cfcatch> <cfsavecontent variable="html"> <cfdump var="#cfcatch#"> </cfsavecontent> <cffile action = "write" file = "#GetDirectoryFromPath(GetCurrentTemplatePath())#webhook_result.htm" output = "#html#"> </cfcatch> </cftry> <cfparam name="url.action" default="null"> <cfif ListFirst(strName, "_") IS "release" AND url.action IS "deployProduction"> <cfset boolDeployToProduction = true> </cfif> <cfif boolDeployToProduction> <p>Calling production deployment script for release: #ListLast(newName,"_")#</p> <!--- INSERT YOUR CODE HERE THAT RUNS GIT SCRIPTS THAT WILL PULL FROM YOUR MASTER BRANCH INTO YOUR PRODUCTION SERVER DIRECTORY ---> </cfif> <cfoutput> <p>Requested actions (#url.action#) Complete</p> </cfoutput> ``` |

| body | Is it hard to not be in the video-making world any more? My job for the past 20 years or so has been in IT and web development, and I've (re)discovered my love of video, audio... creative things. But, it's been difficult to find a way to do something new - something I love - and still put food on the (4 person) table. You were in that world and are now out, so it blasts my curiosity to 100% to know what it's like =) |

Connie and I are happy to present our ballad/orchestrated version of The Old Apartment, by Barenaked Ladies. This song was a favorite when we'd play the club scene throughout New York State, and it is a personal favorite of ours too... so we sat down one night and recorded a nice acoustic rendition. This is our first song to publish to the Steemit platform, but we hope to add many more throughout 2018. | body | I can only imagine what day- and bot-traders with any significant skin in the game will face. The saving grace is that it seems they're currently focusing on those making/trading over 20k, and requiring the exchanges (within the US?) to know their customer (KTC). I am of the firm belief that the government should keep their sh!t out of this until any crypto becomes FIAT... a flat "I spent this much in 2017, and pulled this much out" should be enough for them. What they'll hate most is when crypto can be used more ubiquitously to buy everyday things, online or in brick-and-mortar stores. This is going to be... interesting. |

| body | I mostly just laugh at how stupid things look when they're dated. I did come across some really old photos of elder generations whom I've never met, and also managed to get some history of their lives out of some family members that knew them, and that sobered me up for a while. I've had family either tortured or killed by Nazis in WWII on both sides, and yet they made it to this country to thrive without complaining. |

| body | I've been converting all my old Digital8 tapes to computer files. Since the only way to do this is real-time playback, I set the video camera running, importing into iMovie, while I work. I catch glimpses of the import while I'm doing other things... audio and video creep in while i toil away. Today, I came across the video of the birth of my first child. It was audio-only for much of the import, as there was nobody to run the camera, and I think I simply wanted it running so that when I *could* finally grab it, it would be already capturing as much as possible. Hearing my wife go through a difficult labor all over again, brought back a flood of emotion. Not having video actually seemed to enhance the experience. Tear jerking, to say the least. This is a person I've known for over 20 years; I know her (damned high) tolerance for pain. She had all our kids naturally, with no pain meds. But this birth was truly painful and exhausting. 25+ hours of labor. A difficult delivery. And the first in many many years. I was as supportive as I could be, but it was new to me, and there was just the two of us and the staff... no other friends or relatives around until after baby arrived. Compared to our second child together, which I had converted from tape first, it was shocking just how much more painful this one was... and that was after three children earlier in life. Yep, Number 4 was a real kicker. You'd think the sound of someone you love in pain would be a lasting memory. And if anyone were to ask, I surely would have said that Number 4 was "difficult." But as with many things child-birth-related, you tend to forget the pain and the tense, scary moments, once that baby arrives. The other stuff fades into the background. In this case, it has been almost 13 years since that day... and going back to that day was simply shocking. My wife did amazing, under the most incredible challenge I think she's ever faced, short of the ravages of Lyme Disease. She was stronger than anyone else I've ever known. I have been wanting to convert these videos, and sort out all our phone photos and videos, for a long time now, and since I'm in a lull with my workload (unfortunately), I'm spending time just cleaning up and simplifying my life a bit. And since my memory has been quite a bit less reliable, especially since starting some new medications, I think I believe more than ever that going back and watching old videos, and having other people in them watch too, is vital to keeping "where we've been" well within our grasp... the good times, the bad, all the challenges and rewards. Not necessarily "living in the past", but just stopping now and then to take time to reflect on things; perhaps using the material as a catalyst to mend some fences and just remind everyone of what's truly important. Lyme Disease takes its toll on anybody that it can - the infected person, and every single person associated with them. Long term, it becomes a living, breathing monster bent on wrecking anything it can, leaving scratches from its devious claws in the very fabric of our lives, shitting on our carpets, and casting darkness in even the most well-lit places. Taking time to look back into the "before time" of a chronic illness, not to "wallow" but to reflect and be thankful, and to grieve and move forward, can be truly healing, and enlightening in new ways. Sometimes what we remember becomes so very different from what really happened! If you haven't dragged out the old photo album or videos, make some time this weekend... see what emotions and laughs and tears it brings back. See how you feel when you're done. I'd love to hear about YOUR experience with your trip down memory lane. |

Since the only way to do this is real-time playback, I set the video camera running, importing into iMovie, while I work. I catch glimpses of the import while I'm doing other things... audio and video creep in while i toil away.\n\nToday, I came across the video of the birth of my first child. It was audio-only for much of the import, as there was nobody to run the camera, and I think I simply wanted it running so that when I *could* finally grab it, it would be already capturing as much as possible.\n\nHearing my wife go through a difficult labor all over again, brought back a flood of emotion. I was as supportive as I could be, but it was new to me, and there was just the two of us and the staff... no other friends or relatives around until after baby arrived.\n\nCompared to our second child together, which I had converted from tape first, it was shocking just how much more painful this one was... and that was after three children earlier in life. \n\nYep, Number 4 was a real kicker.\n\n\n\nYou'd think the sound of someone you love in pain would be a lasting memory. | body | Drug testing is common these days, and lets face it, failing a drug test due to a false positive can be devastating news. Some industries require it, like transportation, construction, sports. And we can’t leave out the military, and probation. Many companies in the private sector are now drug testing current employees and screening new employees. First, we need to examine how drug testing works and how it can affect kratom users. How are drug tests conducted? Urine analysis remains the typical method for testing for illicit drug use, and is carried out either at the job site, at a clinic, or any other place chosen by the employer. An individual is informed that drug testing will have to be performed, then they will go to the lab clinic within a stipulated time period. Usually this time period is within one day, to minimize the possibility that any illegal substances in the system will be excreted and undetectable. Will I get tested for kratom? Employers and government agencies normally use a 5 panel test of street drugs which includes cannabinoids, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates and PCP. Probation officers might opt for a 9 or 10 panel test which will includes several prescription medications along with street drugs; Amphetamines (Adderall)/ Barbiturates/ Benzodiazepines / Buprenorphine / Cocaine / Marijuana / Methamphetamines / Methadone / Opiates / Oxycodone (OxyContin/Vicodin). The type of drug analysis that is used depends on the employer, federal specifications, or any other company guidelines that are in place. With this knowledge of current testing panels, it is extremely uncommon for employers to test for kratom, even if they test for extended opiates, they generally won’t be looking for kratom (remember, employers have to pay for every drug test they administer). What are the different methods of drug testing? Urine is the most often used specimen for restricted substances. Urine analysis make up for about 84% of drug tests, only 6% used hair analysis, and 5% used instant or off-site laboratory oral fluid tests. The results of a urine test shows the presence or lack of drug residues in an individual’s urine. Metabolites (drug residues) stay in the system for a period of time after the effects of a drug have worn off. These tests detect and calculate the consumption of a certain drug within the last few days, which can represent evidence of current use. What types of tests are used for drug testing? It is important to verify that the drug testing is conducted at a reliable and authorized lab. Any reliable drug test system will include a 2 step method: – Preliminary (immunoassay) – Confirmatory (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry , GC-MS). The immunoassay test is always performed first and is usually used as a screening technique. If the preliminary test is negative, no additional testing is necessary, and the results are confirmed as negative. However, if the preliminary test is positive, a confirmatory test should be done on a separate segment of the biological sample. The more precise assessment (GC-MS ) is performed as a confirmatory test in order to find specific drug compounds or metabolites and to calculate the quantity of the drug in the system. Confirmatory assessments like GC-MS always need to be implemented before reporting positive test results. How long can any substance be detected in the body with a drug test? Kratom tests are not a standard and are extremely rare, but they exist. All drugs or medications, including kratom, that enter our system are metabolized in the liver, and eliminated by the kidneys, although they can also be eliminated via feces, sweat, etc. For this reason they are detectable in a urine analysis. Of course, the amount of time any substance stays in your system will vary, and is determined by your height, body weight, body fat, age, and overall health. Additional variables are the potency and frequency of use. But what if I’m being tested for kratom? How long does kratom stay in my system for? Kratom possesses two main alkaloids: Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine. Recent studies show that the average elimination half-life of mitragynine in healthy adults is 0.83±0.35 hour. 7-Hydroxymitragynine has a substantially shorter duration, having an average elimination half-life of 50 minutes. Half-life is the time necessary for the concentration of kratom in your organism to be lowered by one-half. The shorter the drug half-life, the faster it is flushed out by your body. Drug concentrations lower than approximately 5% are undetectable, this means that it takes about 5.5x elimination half-life for a drug to be eliminated. Kratom’s terminal half-life is 23.24±16.07 hours so it takes about 1 day for kratom to be cleared from your system. As mentioned above, any drug’s half-life, including kratom, also depends on several factors, such as metabolism and genetics so these times might be higher or lower. Can kratom result in a false positive for opiates? A false positive is a test result that returns a positive result because of inaccurate identification. “While kratom contains alkaloids that bind to opioid receptors in the brain, they are not structurally related to opiate drugs and are therefore not detectable through opiate drug tests” – Confirm Biosciences. There are many substances that might trigger false positives; anything from prescription medications to over-the-counter medications. However, the possibilities of you receiving a false positive is also dependent upon the quality of the lab center that performs the test. The chances of you getting a false positive depends on the quality of the laboratory that does the testing. “There seems to be about 1,200 of these labs in the United States currently testing for drugs. Less than a 100 of these meet federal standards and most of the individual states do not regulate drug test labs. The number of false positives returned range from 4% to over 50%, depending on the lab” – AskDocWeb. That means that you might get a false positive due to a lab error. If you get a false positive test result for opiates or methadone in the preliminary test (immunoassay) you have the right to ask for a confirmatory test (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry , GC-MS) to clear you. Kratom won’t ever result in a false positive in a GC-MS test unless, of course, the laboratory is specifically looking for it, or if the kratom in question is not 100% kratom, and may have questionable additives. Always purchase kratom from a reputable source. There are misleading comments on popular forum websites that claim frequent false positives for methadone. However people who experienced this generally followed up to say they were cleared by the Confirmatory GC-MS test. The result of a drug test may be considered personal health information. Consequently, there may be restrictions on how such information can be shared. This is why employees who undergo a drug test usually must sign a release in order for their employer to receive the results. For more information about issues related to the release of health information, contact DHHS. This agency administers the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which dictates under what circumstances and to whom health information may be released.
