I'm no longer convinced. Even here in Steemit, people are gaming the system for pure profit above value. \n\nNow, this isn't me quitting the platform. Nah, I'm just getting started here. \n\nBut this post is definitely sparked by looking at the lay of the land and what do to game the system and rack up those up-votes. In Facebook it's easy to spot a \"guru\" when they start writing with ellipsis at the end of every line, and hand-wavy woo-woo to lead into a sale.\n\nHere, I'm not so sure.       "body": "<H1>Dwarven Fortress Planners = Private Fortress Planners</H1>\n\n![Graphic.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYkn9DiSnTjBu5dP4a4StwvBw15WPBwHYja6wQ86mRdwc/Graphic.jpg)\n*Simulations with high failure rate in a game are eerily akin to real life.*\n\nI remember hitting **RUN** on a community simulation software for a hunter gatherer tribe. This was back in college. I don't remember details, but I do remember having just input a savings of 800-ish calories due to co-parenting implementations (nannies help in caloric savings, who knew? Demographic Anthropologists, that's who). Just adding that variable gave us astounding results for long term survival.  Several generations were added, and absent unforeseen problems, they'd live for long enough that their offspring could mate with other tribes.\n\nNote the *absent unforeseen problems*. Communities are almost never closed systems. Environmental factors so simple as changes in water salinity can change migration patterns and throw a big wrench in the viability of a community. There are other factors which are more interesting to me: technology, invasion, mutiny, factionalism, resource mismanagement, resource competition, policy creep, bureaucracy, oligarchy, corruption, anomie, etc . \n\nAll things that private cities need to account for. \n\nThat's why I look to the dwarven (dorfs, for those in the know) life in Dwarf Fortress. The idea is that you lead a team of these dwarves and build...well, a fortress, with shops, and food, and carving stations, and trade, war, lava furnaces, the works. \n\nIt's an engrossing and complex simulation that makes games like Civilization look like tic-tac-toe. \n\nSometimes your dorfs (how I'll refer to them hereafter) decide it's a good idea to go fishing. Fishing is great. What isn't great is that if there's catfish in the water your fishing dorfs could get eaten. So on and so forth. \n\nSometimes they cut down trees and anger elves. Elves then declare war. (Sounds like a normal day for a lumber company).\n\nInvasions can happen. Hunger can happen. Sickness. Vampires! Sometimes people can go crazy and start a chain reaction that ends in bloody death.\n\nSometimes you open a gate to hell.\n\nA lot of things can go really bad really fast. \n\nIsn't it the same thing for any type of endeavor? Look at our banking system. Didn't it explode back in 2008? Didn't the gov't have to pay a lot of those Dorf Fortress administrators a lot of money to keep their fortresses from falling apart? \n\nEvery fortress is, essentially, a private city, which brings me to the next point...\n\n<h2> What We Can Learn And Apply To Startup Cities</h2>\n\n**ONE!**\n\nThe first lesson is basic: Cities are complex systems that require a multitude of dorfs performing different services( craftsdwarf, fisherdwarf, miner, etc.). Some private cities forget to think about cleaners. Dorfs don't like dirty cities. \n\n**TWO!!**\n\nComplex systems have a multitude of variables that need to be managed by good city managers: morale, hunger, poverty, equal opportunity, equal access to services, etc.). Dorfs don't like corruption. Inequality up to a point is tolerable, but not so much that they are miserable. Humans sometimes forget this point, specially those that look like they listen to too much Ben Shapiro. Some inequality is *okay* as long as the game feels like it's not rigged.\n\n**THREE???**\n\nPlanning for exogenous or local actors is necessary. Dorfs settled in the middle of a sacred forest for the elves? Uh-oh. \n\nHow do we learn to deal with that? Are we strong enough to fight elves in their own field? Or do we begin to trade with them? This goes to the point of my first blog post. The Puerto Rico Private City project is basically dorfs trying to settle in an elven land. By Armok, you're a dorf that's expecting to be loved by elves? Then why are you cutting down trees? That's how you die. \n\nLearn to adapt to eliminate friction with local actors. I'm currently going strong with keeping elves as friends, and thankfully, no invasions. (Though any DF gamer will tell you I'm a traitor for doing so).\n\n**FOUR!!!!**\n\nFailure rates are high unless outside intervention is possible. \n\nAgain, cities are hard. Hell, international banking is hard. Do you know how many cities over time have been bankrupt? A lot. Thank the gods for bailouts right?\n\nThat's why the ability to form alliances with current actors, (such as governments and other institutions with lots of capital available), and gaining assurance to de-risk the endeavor are necessary, even if you're an anarcho-capitalist. (All dorfs are anarcho-capitalists, but it's not like they won't dance with a government when needed, if not they'd be like those commie elves).",

We can still fix that...maybe.\n\nWhat am I talking about? **The Startup Societies Convention** held in Washington D.C., that's what. \n\nIt focused on private city projects and libertarian dreams for Puerto Rico. TL;DR: 1. Crypto + libertarian wet dreams, 2. People with questionable tastes in clothing, and 3. 1 or 2 smart people who were suckered into giving talks.\n\nNow, for all the **cringe** some talks had, I didn't feel like I wasted my time at the convention. On the contrary, I know that now, more than ever, the main smart city projects in Puerto Rico could go forward...but, I'm not sure that they will.\n\nFor one simple reason: language. \n\nMachiavelli has a strong point when he says that people should reside where they want to conquer. If we apply it to today we know that foreigners buying up business and land are subject to protests and hostile legislation. (See: Mark Zuckerberg's house in Hawaii)\n\nWith that in mind, let's turn our eyes to Puerto Rico, the pearl of the Caribbean. Not a US State, and not a foreign country, a Territory... with benefits. Caught in the middle of an interesting dilemma, where it doesn't have real representation in Congress, but it can reap benefits from really aggressive tax incentives... \"Come on in and don't pay nothin'*'\" (*for PR sourced income)\n\nThat's the pitch they give people outside of P.R. \n\nBut here's the problem: Locals, for the most part, HATE that law. They feel left out and discriminated against. The word \"Colony\" starts getting thrown about and people start frothing at the mouth. \n\nThe tax incentive laws are the latest in a long line of US and Puerto Rican Governments experiments with trying to revivify the economy by attracting investment from the US and Abroad. The PR population, for the most part, doesn't feel included, though they could actually apply to SOME of these programs, but that's something for another post. \n\nIn any case, my point is: There's an obvious public relations problem for anyone trying to get into PR and lay the groundwork for a private city. \n\nThe problem centers around the language used by proponents. \n\n<h2> It Was Like They Wanted Tomatoes Thrown At Them </h2>\n\nHow in the flaming ^&*( could some of these people sit down with a mic in front of them and start saying that the **minimum wage** is bad for Puerto Ricans. Did you ever think about how Puerto Ricans would feel about that? \n\nHey I might not disagree with you, but maybe you should leave the locker room talk for the LOCKER ROOM.\n\nDid people in the public works sphere learn nothing from Trump's campaign? Market research. Speak to your crowd. Speak in their language. \n\n(I forget that this was held in D.C. and the swamp isn't really known for being in tune with constituents.)\n\n\nJust the minimum wage issue is a minefield. After talking with people on different parties in PR, I know this: the current party in power, the Statehood Party (PNP in Spanish), their constituents would consider eliminating the minimum wage an affront to PR's wishes to be like the States. They'd feel like they're being treated like a colony and would fight against that. Some of these people are even against tax incentives because they're a sign that PR isn't a State. Ouch.\n\nThe other big party, the status quo party, would also feel like they're being treated like a colony... A pattern emerges!\n\nThey'd ALL feel like they're being treated like colonies... comprende?\n\nSo probably tackling something so stupid like minimum wage isn't the way to go. Like, if you can't pay minimum wage what the hell are you doing trying to build a private city? Maybe tackle something else that wont make you universally hated. \n\nIt wasn't just the minimum wage people, the simple fact that almost everyone people spoke like they were talking about *poor National Geographic Indians* that will embrace saviors in open arms for the gifts they bear telegraphs that they know nothing about how to run a successful public policy campaign...\n\n...and that's the whole lesson Machiavelli gives us, if we want private cities to be something real we can't just walk into a new region and hope that locals love us. \n\nWe're not gods being beamed in from the Starship Enterprise into the planet of the apes. \n\nNo. We're just pasty people going into a place where they already have Netflix and overpriced craft beer.\n\n<h2> OK, I Get It, So What Can We Do? </h2>\n\nFor starters, research the common problems that there is widespread consensus on... something like the HIGH AF tax rates in PR, or the tax on inventory. Simple stuff. Start small and build off from there.\n\nThis stuff works for any project that requires that a community works with you. \n\nI met a guy that ran a farmer's market in a community. His market wasn't successful for a long time because he wasn't from there. His accent blew him off. He had to show them for a long period of time that he was part of the community now. It took time, money, friendships that he had to form, Etc.  \n\nThat's what it will take, not just having \"gringos\" deciding in DC what they'll do, and just trying to court government officials. Because if you continue on this path, people will just see \"gringos\" trying to build a paradise for \"gringos and their friends\", or \"Gringoland\" (which incidentally has Ayn Rand shrugging as the mascot).",
