body![xl-2017-game-of-thrones-1.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZaV9LuMXsa8GYtTYHFuXTu5oreTz7TgEots7mbc6KhEN/xl-2017-game-of-thrones-1.jpg) Time Warner's pay-TV network HBO on Wednesday admitted that it had been targeted by a cyberattack, confirming an anonymous email the alleged hackers distributed to media outlets last weekend. Among the content that may have been compromised were upcoming episodes of the series Ballers, Barry and Room 104, along with script outlines of the channel's hit show Games of Thrones. In total, the hackers may have obtained 1.5 TB of internal company documents. However, they apparently did not access any actual episodes of Game of Thrones, and no upcoming episodes have appeared online. Some of the hacked content was listed in a Reddit inventory that since has been deleted. HBO quickly downplayed the attack. It was unlikely that the cable company's email system had been compromised, CEO Richard Plepler said in an email to employees. Not Just HBO This is not the first such attack to victimize a media company. Hackers earlier this year obtained episodes from the then-upcoming season 5 of the Netflix series Orange is the New Black and threatened to release the content unless a ransom was paid. Netflix refused to pay up, however, and accepted that some episodes were leaked online. Sony remains the biggest Hollywood hack victim, a title thrust upon it late in 2014, when approximately 100 TB of data was uploaded to the Internet. It included employee emails, personal financial data and some film content. The Sony hack purportedly was carried out by hackers working on behalf of North Korea in response to the studio's then new film The Interview, which offered a satirical look into the so-called Hermit Kingdom. The common denominator in these hacks is that the companies involved all have been coy about the amount of information they were willing to share. "As with many such things, probably the details that are public today tell only a small part of the story," said Jim Purtilo, associate professor in the computer science department at the University of Maryland. "Companies have every incentive to remain as terse as possible since they are looking at their liability, corporate branding overall, and of course their need not to connect too many dots for intruders who might not fully appreciate what they ripped," he told TechNewsWorld. "I have not yet offhand heard much on the intrusion mechanism," Purtilo added. "We won't know a reason until some arrest would be made, but at this point I'd presume this was just another target of opportunity." Hacking for Fun or Profit Although the motive behind HBO attack is unclear, it doesn't seem to be financial gain. "At first glance, the HBO hack has the look of a smash-and-grab event, where intruders took what looked interesting and valuable, and vamoosed," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. "Though links to a pair of Game of Thrones episodes have cropped up, the stolen data mainly consisted of company documents, including employee emails, personnel records and scripts of a few unaired HBO shows," he told TechNewsworld. The motive could be relatively mundane. "You have to understand that the reasons hackers attack certain sites vary greatly," noted Jim McGregor, principal analyst at Tirias Research. "Hackers are often very similar to mountain climbers -- they do it just because it's there and it's a challenge," he told TechNewsWorld. "I would suspect that it is likely driven just to get access to HBO content," McGregor said, "but with the amount of information taken, they may have gotten much more, including customer data and HBO internal documents." Growth Opportunity Given the fact that content is so expensive to produce, and that it routinely is pirated, it's questionable whether future hackers will consider it valuable enough to exploit.. "Hacking can also be a business model where the information taken is held for ransom," McGregor pointed out. "Whatever the reason, no company is really off limits today," he said, "but the bigger and more prominent you are, the bigger target you become for a wider variety of hackers." Given the growing volume of original content from HBO, as well as its competitors such as Netflix and Amazon, this event could signal an escalation of attacks against independent entertainment vendors and platforms, Pund-IT's King warned. Attacks may not have financial drivers -- they could be politically or socially motivated. That said, "HBO's hackers appear to be unmotivated by political or other fundamental issues," King suggested. "That makes the event quite different than the 2014 Sony hack executed by the 'Guardians of Peace,' who were later identifiedas North Korea-supported hackers who were retaliating against Sony's film, The Interview, which parodied North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un," said King. "Unless HBO's hackers release more damaging or controversial data, or are aided by Wikileaks, this event is likely to be less disruptive than the Sony hack," he observed. "That said, it should still inspire Netflix, Amazon and others in the entertainment and film industries to examine and shore up their network security -- or be the next in line to be hacker targets."

body![xl-2017-microsoft-hololens-processor-1.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRvjUnPMwJNdTCBtw2BAoNzMmLXWMt6vcCyjhHuBUG1Tx/xl-2017-microsoft-hololens-processor-1.jpg) The next version of Microsoft's HoloLens may be better at navigating reality than the current version of the mixed-reality headset, thanks to a new coprocessor the company announced Sunday. The second version of HoloLens' custom multiprocessor -- called a "holographic processing unit," or HPU -- will incorporate artificial intelligence technology, Harry Shum, executive vice president of the Artificial Intelligence and Research Group, said at the annual CVPR computer vision event. The new HPU will enable HoloLens to do the kind of deep learning processing that typically is done only in the cloud. HoloLens is designed to be a self-contained holographic computer -- battery, sensors and display are contained in the headset. The HPU allows the headset to negotiate reality without experience-killing latency. "Once you get the pattern algorithms straightened out, you want to run them locally because users can't deal with any information lag," said Jack E. Gold, principal analyst at J.Gold Associates. "It's got to be local and instantaneous," he told TechNewsWorld. "Latency kills you in these mixed-reality applications." Adding an AI coprocessor to HoloLens "is the kind of thinking you need if you're going to develop mixed reality devices that are themselves intelligent," noted Marc Pollefeys, director of science at HoloLens. "Mixed reality and artificial intelligence represent the future of computing, and we're excited to be advancing this frontier," he added. Beneficial Addition HoloLens will benefit from the addition of AI silicon, according to Eric Abbruzzese, a senior analyst with ABI Research. "Higher accuracy in head tracking and georegistering content -- locking digital content to the real world -- is the primary benefit, with the side effect of a platform gradually growing in capability," he told TechNewsWorld. The additional silicon could boost performance and user safety, said Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy. "With a high performance AI chip, less processing needs to be done in the cloud, and therefore HoloLens could be faster, more secure and more private," he told TechNewsWorld. That speed could have another benefit to the HoloLens ecosystem. "It could lead to entirely new kinds and classes of [augmented reality] solutions for consumers and businesses," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. Trending Approach Microsoft isn't alone in thinking that more processing has to be done at the endpoints of a network, especially in light of the projected growth of the Internet of Things. "We're seeing people bringing artificial intelligence and machine learning to specific silicon at the endpoint," said Bob O'Donnell, chief analyst at Technalysis Research. "We're seeing efforts to take real-time sensor input and apply algorithms to that without having to go to the cloud," he told TechNewsWorld. "Companies are increasingly realizing that to do cutting-edge products, they have to do their own silicon." Microsoft and others are recognizing that when doing compute-intensive tasks at the network's edge, they should be done as close to the source of the data as possible, noted Mark Hung, a research vice president at Gartner. "It makes for a better experience for the user and reduces latency and the costs of communication, and the burden on cloud services," he told TechNewsWorld. "Microsoft is thinking long-term and saying let's do this now and get ahead of the curve," Gold added. "Everyone at the high end of the AR market is going to have to do something similar." Impact on AR Market The addition of AI silicon to HoloLens will help Microsoft maintain its leading position in the AR/MR market, noted Ian Hughes, an Internet of Things analyst at 451 Research. "Adding to the next device's processing power with additional AI will keep the company at the forefront of AR development," he told TechNewsWorld. Maintaining that leadership position is very important to Microsoft. "That's a critical issue considering the fact that every major Microsoft competitor, including Apple and Google, are developing similar platforms in-house," Pund-IT's King told TechNewsWorld. Beefing up HoloLens' AI chops could have a significant impact on the AR market, noted David MacQueen, executive director for apps and media at Strategy Analytics. "I think having such a major player -- and a very serious player when it comes to the enterprise sector -- building in this technology will see it become more commonplace in the AR market," he told TechNewsWorld. "It could push AR ahead of VR," said King, "in terms of market share and impact

body![xl-2017-businessman-storm-clouds-1.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWW6eWxPXfVdVsaZXBWnvJ84AQTx9kb9GS4wJSWHX4snL/xl-2017-businessman-storm-clouds-1.jpg) I just finishi reading an interesting hard science fiction book called The Punch Escrow, by Tal M. Klein (a movie is in the works). What makes the difference between hard and soft science efiction is that hard science fiction is based on science, while soft is, let's just say, far more imaginative. To be honest, I enjoy both types, and the soft stuff is a ton easier to write. Those pesky physical rules don't get in the way, and you don't have to do research. The story takes place several decades in the future, and it revolves around the idea of quantum foam and teleportation. It points out why teleportation never may be practical, but it brings up the idea of human 3D printing, which could be used more effectively for space exploration. However, it also would have a massive number of other uses, both good and bad, which got me thinking about what else could change our future in a massive way. I came up with a list of five potentially world-changing technologies. I'll close with my product of the week: a book on management that could have a massive effect on your company's success, based on the black boxes used in airplanes. It's called Black Box Thinking. Technology 1: Organic Printing We can use 3D printers for plastics, ceramics, metals and some blends, but our efforts even to print food have been more in line with automated icing machines for cakes than printing food. If we could print food affordably using nonperishable components, it would mean not only that we would be better able to address the massive amount of global hunger that exists, but also that we potentially could cut the cost of food manufacturing and eliminate most food-borne illnesses. There is an amazing amount of activity in this area, suggesting that by 2030 we actually might have something like the Star Trek replicator in our homes. Given that this same technology likely could manufacture drugs and better prosthetics, this single step could have a massive impact on how we live -- far beyond the way we eat. Technology 2: Advanced Bio-engineering A division of Google is releasing millions of bio-engineered mosquitoes to eliminate those that carry sicknesses. Granted, I do remember that many apocalyptic movies start this way. The ability to manufacture insects that can address certain problems could have a massive impact, good and bad, on our environment. The bad would come from a mistake, or if someone decided to create militarized mosquitoes. In the world of The Punch Escrow, there are mosquitoes that have been engineered to eat pollutants in the air and pee H20 -- and characters have to dodge constant pee drenchings from the mosquitoes. Still, bio-engineered life forms could offset much of the damage we've done to the world -- addressing global warming as well as land, sea and air pollution -- and go places that people currently are unable to go. Technology 3: AI Salting Artificial intelligence salting is another concept author Klein introduces as a major plot element in The Punch Escrow. AI salting isn't meal preparation, for when we humans eat AIs (boy, talk about a concept that could start a Terminator event) it means a specialized technician teaches an AI to think more like a human. Basically, it is individual AI deep learning of human behaviors. The underlying concept, making computers think more like humans, is critical to make them more effective at interacting with humans and interfacing with us more effectively. If we really can't tell the difference between an AI and a human, or if an AI handling a human-related task could be made to be empathetic, the improvement in the interaction and the effectiveness of the AI would be improved vastly. However, few are focused on the human part, and the challenge to train AIs to be more human-like could change forever the way we interact with and use them. At the very least, it would be a huge step in creating robots indistinguishable from humans and making the Westworld experience real. Technology 4: Ultracapacitor Batteries As Elon Musk repeatedly has said, batteries suck. Ultracapacitors can be charged and discharged almost instantly. They don't have the level of temperature problems that batteries currently exhibit. They are much lighter, which increases efficiency in things like cars, and their life cycle is vastly longer than current batteries. The problem is, they don't do a good job of storing energy for any length of time. Some recent promising news from the scientific community suggests we may be close to sorting this out. Batteries that could charge instantly and produce far more energy without problems would be a huge step toward making off-grid home power and electric-powered cars far more convenient. Technology 5: Wireless Power Ever since Nikola Tesla started talking about being able to broadcast power, it has been a known game-changer. Granted, Tesla may have gotten his ideas from aliens, but if you don't need batteries, then electric cars, planes, trains and personal electronics become smaller and far more reliable. Qualcomm is working on a technology called "Halo", initially to charge electric cars without having to plug them in. However, its vision includes putting this technology in roads so that you'd never have to charge your car again -- it would charge while you were driving. Rather than replacing a gas pump with a far slower charging station, you would just get rid of it. While not as good as true broadcast power, technology like this could work in cars, planes and offices, and we would never have to worry about charging our personal stuff or cars ever again. A similar technology from WiTricity is being used to develop wireless charging for all our devices and currently being built into Dell's laptop charging docks. Wrapping Up Put these technologies together, and we'd have our food coming to us anyplace in any form and at any time we wanted. We'd have bugs making the world a better place to live. AIs would be our friends -- not the problem Elon Musk is envisioning (though I kind of question his idea that government should fix this, given how bad it is at fixing things), or they'd just be much better at "taking care" of us -- but not in a good way. Finally, if we can get better energy storage and distribution, we end up in a far more reliable and less-polluted world, coming damn close to a future Utopia. Though, as The Punch Escrow points out, if we can't fix ourselves, the result still could be pretty nasty. Just think of the implications of printing people... As the only sure thing about the future is that it will be very different than the world of today, here's hoping that is a good thing. Rob Enderle's Product of the Week Summer is the time I get caught up on my reading, and after reading The Punch Escrow, I moved to another recommended book that is far more practical. Black Box Thinking is based largely around comparing the healthcare industry to the airline industry, and pointing out that airlines have become massively safer over the years. However, hospitals may be the third biggest killer of people, largely because airlines have black boxes. Black Box Thinking The reason this hits home for me is that it points to hospitals as places where errors are covered up aggressively to avoid liability. Black boxes, which capture errors but can't be used in litigation, are used to determine fault -- not to assign blame, but to ensure that the mistake never happens again. This one practice has helped transform air travel from one of the least safe ways to travel to one of the safest. The big takeaway is that if you and your company can focus more on mistakes as learning opportunities and on ensuring that they are one-time events, rather than focusing on shooting the poor sap who made the mistake, which is much more typical, you'll end up not only with a far less hostile working environment, but also a far more successful company. One of my big personal concerns is that we'll transfer this process of blame and covering up mistakes to our coming wave of ever-more-intelligent machines, which could speed up the related problems to machine speed. I doubt we'd survive that. So, a book that makes workplace environments better, companies more successful, and humans more likely to survive is worth reading, I think, and it's my product of the week

Klein (a movie is in the works).\n\nWhat makes the difference between hard and soft science efiction is that hard science fiction is based on science, while soft is, let's just say, far more imaginative. To be honest, I enjoy both types, and the soft stuff is a ton easier to write. Those pesky physical rules don't get in the way, and you don't have to do research.\n\nThe story takes place several decades in the future, and it revolves around the idea of quantum foam and teleportation. It points out why teleportation never may be practical, but it brings up the idea of human 3D printing, which could be used more effectively for space exploration.\n\nHowever, it also would have a massive number of other uses, both good and bad, which got me thinking about what else could change our future in a massive way. I came up with a list of five potentially world-changing technologies.\n\nI'll close with my product of the week: a book on management that could have a massive effect on your company's success, based on the black boxes used in airplanes. It's called Black Box Thinking.\n\nTechnology 1: Organic Printing\n\nWe can use 3D printers for plastics, ceramics, metals and some blends, but our efforts even to print food have been more in line with automated icing machines for cakes than printing food.\n\nIf we could print food affordably using nonperishable components, it would mean not only that we would be better able to address the massive amount of global hunger that exists, but also that we potentially could cut the cost of food manufacturing and eliminate most food-borne illnesses.\n\nThere is an amazing amount of activity in this area, suggesting that by 2030 we actually might have something like the Star Trek replicator in our homes.\n\nGiven that this same technology likely could manufacture drugs and better prosthetics, this single step could have a massive impact on how we live -- far beyond the way we eat.\n\nTechnology 2: Advanced Bio-engineering\n\nA division of Google is releasing millions of bio-engineered mosquitoes to eliminate those that carry sicknesses. Granted, I do remember that many apocalyptic movies start this way.\n\nThe ability to manufacture insects that can address certain problems could have a massive impact, good and bad, on our environment. The bad would come from a mistake, or if someone decided to create militarized mosquitoes.\n\nIn the world of The Punch Escrow, there are mosquitoes that have been engineered to eat pollutants in the air and pee H20 -- and characters have to dodge constant pee drenchings from the mosquitoes.\n\nStill, bio-engineered life forms could offset much of the damage we've done to the world -- addressing global warming as well as land, sea and air pollution -- and go places that people currently are unable to go.\n\nTechnology 3: AI Salting\n\nArtificial intelligence salting is another concept author Klein introduces as a major plot element in The Punch Escrow. AI salting isn't meal preparation, for when we humans eat AIs (boy, talk about a concept that could start a Terminator event) it means a specialized technician teaches an AI to think more like a human.\n\nBasically, it is individual AI deep learning of human behaviors. The underlying concept, making computers think more like humans, is critical to make them more effective at interacting with humans and interfacing with us more effectively.\n\nIf we really can't tell the difference between an AI and a human, or if an AI handling a human-related task could be made to be empathetic, the improvement in the interaction and the effectiveness of the AI would be improved vastly.\n\nHowever, few are focused on the human part, and the challenge to train AIs to be more human-like could change forever the way we interact with and use them. At the very least, it would be a huge step in creating robots indistinguishable from humans and making the Westworld experience real.\n\nTechnology 4: Ultracapacitor Batteries\n\nAs Elon Musk repeatedly has said, batteries suck. Ultracapacitors can be charged and discharged almost instantly. They don't have the level of temperature problems that batteries currently exhibit. They are much lighter, which increases efficiency in things like cars, and their life cycle is vastly longer than current batteries.\n\nThe problem is, they don't do a good job of storing energy for any length of time. Some recent promising news from the scientific community suggests we may be close to sorting this out.\n\nBatteries that could charge instantly and produce far more energy without problems would be a huge step toward making off-grid home power and electric-powered cars far more convenient.\n\nTechnology 5: Wireless Power\n\nEver since Nikola Tesla started talking about being able to broadcast power, it has been a known game-changer. Granted, Tesla may have gotten his ideas from aliens, but if you don't need batteries, then electric cars, planes, trains and personal electronics become smaller and far more reliable.\n\nQualcomm is working on a technology called \"Halo\", initially to charge electric cars without having to plug them in. However, its vision includes putting this technology in roads so that you'd never have to charge your car again -- it would charge while you were driving.\n\nRather than replacing a gas pump with a far slower charging station, you would just get rid of it. While not as good as true broadcast power, technology like this could work in cars, planes and offices, and we would never have to worry about charging our personal stuff or cars ever again.\n\nA similar technology from WiTricity is being used to develop wireless charging for all our devices and currently being built into Dell's laptop charging docks.\n\nWrapping Up\n\nPut these technologies together, and we'd have our food coming to us anyplace in any form and at any time we wanted. We'd have bugs making the world a better place to live.\n\nAIs would be our friends -- not the problem Elon Musk is envisioning (though I kind of question his idea that government should fix this, given how bad it is at fixing things), or they'd just be much better at \"taking care\" of us -- but not in a good way.\n\nFinally, if we can get better energy storage and distribution, we end up in a far more reliable and less-polluted world, coming damn close to a future Utopia. Though, as The Punch Escrow points out, if we can't fix ourselves, the result still could be pretty nasty.\n\nJust think of the implications of printing people... As the only sure thing about the future is that it will be very different than the world of today, here's hoping that is a good thing.\n\nRob Enderle's Product of the Week\n\nSummer is the time I get caught up on my reading, and after reading The Punch Escrow, I moved to another recommended book that is far more practical. Black Box Thinking is based largely around comparing the healthcare industry to the airline industry, and pointing out that airlines have become massively safer over the years. However, hospitals may be the third biggest killer of people, largely because airlines have black boxes.\n\nBlack Box Thinking\nThe reason this hits home for me is that it points to hospitals as places where errors are covered up aggressively to avoid liability. Black boxes, which capture errors but can't be used in litigation, are used to determine fault -- not to assign blame, but to ensure that the mistake never happens again. This one practice has helped transform air travel from one of the least safe ways to travel to one of the safest.\n\nThe big takeaway is that if you and your company can focus more on mistakes as learning opportunities and on ensuring that they are one-time events, rather than focusing on shooting the poor sap who made the mistake, which is much more typical, you'll end up not only with a far less hostile working environment, but also a far more successful company.\n\nOne of my big personal concerns is that we'll transfer this process of blame and covering up mistakes to our coming wave of ever-more-intelligent machines, which could speed up the related problems to machine speed. I doubt we'd survive that.\n\nSo, a book that makes workplace environments better, companies more successful, and humans more likely to survive is worth reading, I think, and it's my product of the week",

body![flash-video.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf3YJQJ8STiDtHwunKYKvMPMuxQRiYdWd7SBkXQZzzFXF/flash-video.jpg) Adobe on Tuesday announced its decision to pull the plug on its much maligned Flash format, citing the growing use of HTML5, WebGL and Web Assembly open standards. Flash Flames Out - but It Will Smolder for a While Helper apps have evolved over time to become plugins, which then further evolved to become open Web standards, Adobe noted. However, because gaming, education and video have come to depend heavily on Flash over the years, its phaseout will be gradual. The company will continue to update it with any necessary patches, maintain browser and operating system compatibility, and add features as necessary until 2020. Adobe is working with partners Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Mozilla and Apple to smooth the transition. Each of those companies posted an update on how the shift will impact its browsers or interfaces. Partner Plans Eighty percent of desktop Chrome users accessed a page running Flash just three years ago, but that figure has declined to 17 percent currently, according to Google. Google changed its policies late last year, requiring permission from users to make Flash a default experience for Chrome. It plans continue to ask permission to use Flash in different situations until the phaseout is accomplished, and it will remove the plugin completely by 2020. Mozilla updated its published road map for Flash users. Starting next month, users will have to choose which websites use the Flash plugin. Mozilla will disable Flash by default in 2019, when access will be limited to users running the Extended Support Release. They will be able to continue using Flash until the phaseout is complete in 2020. Microsoft plans to phase out support for Flash in Edge and Internet Explorer before 2020 and completely remove Flash from Windows. It already has begun the process for Microsoft Edge, with click-to-run for Flash found in the Windows 10 Creators Update. Through the end of 2017 into 2018, Edge will ask for permission on most sites and save the user preferences. Internet Explorer will continue to run Flash. Flash will be disabled by default in both browsers starting in 2019, but users will be able to re-enable it. By the end of 2020, all computers running Windows will remove Flash in both browsers. The iPhone, iPod touch and iPad never have supported Flash, Apple noted. Macs stopped providing it preinstalled starting in 2010. Flash remains off by default in those products, and Safari requires explicit approval before it will run Flash on any websites. WebKit supports the latest standards, Apple said, including HTML Video and Media Source extensions for a wide range of video; HTML Canvas and WebGL for fast, dynamic games; CSS Transitions and Animations for animations to Web interfaces; Web/RTC for peer-to-peer video; and WebAssembly for faster games and compute-intensive applications. "Flash has long been a challenged tech product with known operational issues, which is why Steve Jobs refused to allow it onto the Apple iOS hardware products," said Tim Mulligan, senior analyst at Midia Research. "Adobe is finally bowing to the inevitable and phasing out support for it in three years time," he told TechNewsWorld. Gaming Repercussions "The move to open Web is stimulating a comeback of playing games inside the Web browser, rather than through an installed app or game. This is particularly true on mobile," said Jelle Kooistra, head of product development -- mobile, at Newzoo. "For instance, we're seeing the first experiments happen now with Facebook Messenger's Instant Games," he told TechNewsWorld. "The advantage these games have is that the barrier to starting to play a game is much smaller: You just have to click a link," Kooistra pointed out. "We believe this area will grow heavily in the coming years, mainly in social and small experiences -- e.g., playing a quick round of poker with a friend. The open Web provides an issue for Apple and Google, as it allows games to monetize outside of their closed ecosystem, in which they take 30 percent of all generated revenues," he observed. "However, it will be quite a while before experiences streamed through a Web browser can fully replace the quality and fluidity of installed games," said Kooistra. "Furthermore, game developers will also have to re-invent how to monetize efficiently in these types of games." Game developer Kongregate published data showing that it has seen minimal impact on the quality and revenue potential of games going forward, Mozilla noted. The technology for 2D games has changed little, based on Kongregate's findings; however, there is still a gap for 3D. Kongregate ported two of its top games, Tyrant Unleashed and Spellstone, from UnityPlayer to HTML5 at the end of last year. Security Hassles "As a security professional, I can't overstate how happy I am that Adobe is finally retiring Flash," said Mark Nunnikhoven, vice president of cloud research at Trend Micro. "Unfortunately, the actual date is still a couple of years away," he told TechNewsWorld. When Flash debuted in 1996, it provided a fantastic way to deliver rich Web applications and video, even though it needed a privileged position as a browser plugin to make that happen, Nunnikhoven recalled. The security community has learned a lot since then regarding browser security, he said, and the threat landscape has undergone wave after wave of change. Better tools have been developed to deliver video and rich Web applications. Flash has become an outdated source of vulnerabilities, Nunnikhoven noted. Over the last 10 years, more than 1,064 Flash vulnerabilities have been reported -- the equivalent of 2 percent of all vulnerabilities in the industry. Most of the vulnerabilities were rated high or critical, he said, as they exposed many Web users' systems to threats when they did nothing more than visit certain Web pages

This is particularly true on mobile,\" said Jelle Kooistra, head of product development -- mobile, at Newzoo.\n\n\"For instance, we're seeing the first experiments happen now with Facebook Messenger's Instant Games,\" he told TechNewsWorld.\n\n\"The advantage these games have is that the barrier to starting to play a game is much smaller: You just have to click a link,\" Kooistra pointed out.\n\n\"We believe this area will grow heavily in the coming years, mainly in social and small experiences -- e.g., playing a quick round of poker with a friend. The open Web provides an issue for Apple and Google, as it allows games to monetize outside of their closed ecosystem, in which they take 30 percent of all generated revenues,\" he observed.\n\n\"However, it will be quite a while before experiences streamed through a Web browser can fully replace the quality and fluidity of installed games,\" said Kooistra. \"Furthermore, game developers will also have to re-invent how to monetize efficiently in these types of games.\"\n\nGame developer Kongregate published data showing that it has seen minimal impact on the quality and revenue potential of games going forward, Mozilla noted.\n\nThe technology for 2D games has changed little, based on Kongregate's findings; however, there is still a gap for 3D.\n\nKongregate ported two of its top games, Tyrant Unleashed and Spellstone, from UnityPlayer to HTML5 at the end of last year.\n\nSecurity Hassles\n\n\"As a security professional, I can't overstate how happy I am that Adobe is finally retiring Flash,\" said Mark Nunnikhoven, vice president of cloud research at Trend Micro.\n\n\"Unfortunately, the actual date is still a couple of years away,\" he told TechNewsWorld.\n\nWhen Flash debuted in 1996, it provided a fantastic way to deliver rich Web applications and video, even though it needed a privileged position as a browser plugin to make that happen, Nunnikhoven recalled.\n\nThe security community has learned a lot since then regarding browser security, he said, and the threat landscape has undergone wave after wave of change. Better tools have been developed to deliver video and rich Web applications.\n\nFlash has become an outdated source of vulnerabilities, Nunnikhoven noted. Over the last 10 years, more than 1,064 Flash vulnerabilities have been reported -- the equivalent of 2 percent of all vulnerabilities in the industry.\n\nMost of the vulnerabilities were rated high or critical, he said, as they exposed many Web users' systems to threats when they did nothing more than visit certain Web pages",

body![3261363-2017071314093000-cba841b50a92a904e313ae06df4ef71a.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTMENzFQctCoS7w33Y5HDxNraDQPTZKMh1TEv1rtwgwCa/3261363-2017071314093000-cba841b50a92a904e313ae06df4ef71a.jpg)Splatoon 2 is easy to love. It's colorful and quirky and unafraid to be different, and it's consistently a blast to play. As far as shooters go, its unique movement mechanics stand out and make each match exciting. And while the logistics of its multiplayer aren't perfect, Splatoon 2 is a vibrant and exuberant sequel with enough fresh additions and changes to set it apart from the original. Like the first game, Splatoon 2 stars human-squid hybrids called Inklings. Their world is bright and filled with nautical puns both spoken and implied, and even just walking around and picking out new clothes is delightful. The shoe store is called Shella Fresh, for example, and cute fish-themed decor peppers the hub area. That extends to the gameplay, of course; your weapons shoot (or sometimes fling) ink, and you can instantly change into your squid form and swim through ink puddles to reload. Swimming also has a stealth element to it, since you're harder to see and faster, and therefore better equipped for surprise attacks. You can also ink walls and swim up them in squid form, which adds to your verticality in matches. In the standard multiplayer mode Turf War, you're tasked with inking more of the map than your opponents while also "splatting" them to limit their progress. Multiplayer is undoubtedly the main draw of Splatoon 2, but both new and returning players should absolutely try the new-and-improved single player mode before jumping into any matches. Unlike in the first game, where you could only use the standard Splattershot gun in the campaign, Splatoon 2's serves as a fantastic introduction to all the basic weapon types you'll have access to--and it's much more robust, with collectibles that require a sharp eye to find and creative platforming challenges that really showcase how unique Splatoon 2's movement is for the shooter genre. And while it starts out a bit basic, each level builds on the last and requires clever application of your knowledge to complete. Grinding on rails while shooting targets, then switching to your squid form and successfully landing a tricky jump is satisfying not just because it's fun and cool but because it really feels like you've mastered Splatoon 2's new mechanics. Unfortunately, not all of the single player campaign's lessons make it into the multiplayer. Most notably, rail grinding, which is the standout from single player, isn't possible on Moray Towers' rails. That in particular feels like a missed opportunity, especially since that map is returning from the first game. However, getting to use a wide variety of weapons in single player makes the transition to multiplayer easier, and subtle tweaks to weapons and gear, like faster movement with the roller, add a layer of new strategy for veteran players. On top of that, the majority of the maps are new, and favorites include Inkblot Art Academy and The Reef, both of which have several vertical levels that result in intense struggles for control of the higher ground. The only multiplayer mode for non-ranked matches is Turf War, which is consistently so much fun that only having one casual mode isn't really a problem. Covering the most ground with your ink is a simple enough concept, but skillful movement, well-timed inking, and the right strategy for your weapon all work together to give each match more depth. There are some wrinkles with the logistics of these regular battles: there's no way to change your weapon once you're in a lobby, so you're stuck with whatever team composition you get, and you can't guarantee you'll be on the same team as any friends who join your lobby. But, as the most laid-back of the multiplayer options, Turf Wars' quick games and random team assignments make it easy to jump in and out and have fun without too much pressure. It might be frustrating when your team of randoms doesn't seem to know what they're doing, but the fast-paced struggle to cover turf with your team's ink is as exhilarating as ever. Ranked battles return with Tower Control, Rainmaker, and Splat Zones. Each mode is similar to game types you might be familiar with in other team shooters; Tower Control consists of escorting a tower to a goal, Rainmaker is like reverse capture the flag, and Splat Zones requires you to "control" specific areas for a certain amount of time by covering them with your team's ink. Unfortunately, the lobbies for ranked matches haven't been populated enough for us to play them ahead of launch, but based on our experience with the first game, we can expect these modes to work essentially the same way. Splatoon's ink mechanics make these modes feel different from other games, and the focus on specific objectives is great for competitive players who want something more than the informal structure of Turf War. No Caption Provided Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5 There's also a new co-op mode called Salmon Run that lets you play alongside one to three friends in a horde environment. It's surprisingly challenging and requires more strategy and finesse than Turf War by far. Even on lower difficulties, my groups struggled against minibosses that require specific strategies to take out--they're less threatening than the single-player bosses but hard to deal with in high volumes. Successfully clearing the waves was satisfying knowing that we had to have worked well as a team in order to survive. In addition to the updated single-player campaign, this is another mode that shows off what's so great about Splatoon 2's unique gameplay in ways that PvP multiplayer doesn't. The biggest problems with the original Splatoon's multiplayer were limited matchmaking and a lack of voice chat, which made team strategy extremely cumbersome and difficult. While regular battles still lack shooter matchmaking mainstays like parties, there's a new mode called League Battle that lets you group up with either one or three other friends and play together in a more competitive environment. League battles include the same modes as ranked but don't affect your solo rank, which is a great option if your skills aren't quite in line with your friends'. That said, voice chat is still a problem--you have to use a phone app to communicate, which is inelegant at best and ridiculous for a modern team-based game. There's no good reason it couldn't have been included in-game. At first glance, Splatoon 2 seems very similar to the first game. But all the small changes, and even the bigger ones in single player and League Battles, make for a fresh take on the already unique shooter. If you played a lot of the original, the sequel has enough to keep you coming back, and if you're new to the game, it's a fantastic place to jump in.

Splatoon's ink mechanics make these modes feel different from other games, and the focus on specific objectives is great for competitive players who want something more than the informal structure of Turf War.\n\nNo Caption Provided\nGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5\nThere's also a new co-op mode called Salmon Run that lets you play alongside one to three friends in a horde environment. In addition to the updated single-player campaign, this is another mode that shows off what's so great about Splatoon 2's unique gameplay in ways that PvP multiplayer doesn't.\n\nThe biggest problems with the original Splatoon's multiplayer were limited matchmaking and a lack of voice chat, which made team strategy extremely cumbersome and difficult. There's no good reason it couldn't have been included in-game.\n\nAt first glance, Splatoon 2 seems very similar to the first game. But all the small changes, and even the bigger ones in single player and League Battles, make for a fresh take on the already unique shooter. If you played a lot of the original, the sequel has enough to keep you coming back, and if you're new to the game, it's a fantastic place to jump in.",

body![bitcoinstack.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWC39VZ6R57qUBXhBBigEQuQXYqqvoNDgq8nxBxVWsbjA/bitcoinstack.jpg)As the hackers behind the global ransomware attack demand payment in bitcoin, here is a look at the basics behind the electronic currency. WHY ARE HACKERS USING BITCOIN? The digital currency bitcoin has emerged as a favourite tool for hackers demanding a ransom for a simple reason: You can start accepting bitcoin anywhere in the world without having to reveal your identity. For criminals, this makes bitcoin much more attractive than systems like Western Union, which generally require customers to provide identification before opening an account and receiving transferred money. WHAT IS BITCOIN? Bitcoin is a digital token that can be sent electronically from one user to another, anywhere in the world. Bitcoin is also the name of the payment network on which the bitcoin digital tokens move. (Some people differentiate between Bitcoin capitalised, as the token, and bitcoin lowercase, as the network.) Unlike traditional payment networks like Visa or American Express, no single company or person runs the bitcoin network. Instead, it is a decentralised network of computers around the world that keep track of all bitcoin transactions, similar to the decentralised network of servers that makes the Internet work. Because there is no central authority running bitcoin, no one has the authority to force new users to reveal their identities. The network was designed this way to create a currency and a financial network outside the control of any government or single company. The computers that join the network and track bitcoin transactions are motivated to do so by the new coins that are released to the network every 10 minutes and are given to one of the computers helping to track the transactions and maintain the network. HOW DO YOU BUY AND RECEIVE BITCOINS? There are companies in most countries that will sell you bitcoins in exchange for the local currency. In the United States, a company called Coinbase will link to your bank account or credit card and then sell you the coins for US dollars. Opening an account with Coinbase is similar to opening a traditional bank or stock brokerage account, with lots of verification of your identity needed. For people who do not want to reveal their identities, there are services like LocalBitcoins that will connect local people who want to buy and sell bitcoins for cash, generally without any verification of identity required. To start accepting bitcoins is even easier. One needs only to create a bitcoin address, which can be done anonymously by anyone with Internet access. The price of bitcoin fluctuates constantly and is determined by open-market bidding on bitcoin exchanges, similar to the way that stock and gold prices are determined by bidding on exchanges. CAN THE AUTHORITIES TRACK CRIMINALS USING BITCOIN? All bitcoin transactions are recorded on the network's public ledger, known as the blockchain. Law enforcement or financial authorities can sometimes use the blockchain to track transactions among criminals. But as long as the criminals do not associate a real-world identity with their bitcoin address, they are generally safe. Complicating matters further, there are increasingly sophisticated bitcoin laundering services, known as tumblers, which mix large quantities of transactions together in order to make it harder for the authorities to track the transactions. Where it can get more difficult for hackers is when they want to convert the bitcoins they have received into a traditional national currency. Most companies that convert bitcoins to dollars in the United States require that their customers provide identification. If a criminal registered with a company like that, it would be relatively easy for the police to track them down. But there are many bitcoin exchanges outside the United States that do not require customers to register with a real-world identity. LocalBitcoins also makes it easy to find someone in any city around the world who will meet you in person and pay cash for bitcoins without requiring any identification - a sort of Craigslist for bitcoin exchanges. It is also getting easier to buy goods online using bitcoins, without ever converting the digital currency into dollars or euros. WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE PRICE OF BITCoin Like gold, the price of bitcoin has always been driven by the scarcity of the digital tokens. When bitcoin was created in 2009, it was determined that only 21 million coins would ever be created. Technology investors have purchased coins and pushed up the price out of a belief that the tokens and the system will be a sort of global digital currency and financial network for the future. While real-world transactions have been slow to take off, bitcoin has continued to be popular for black market uses like ransomware and online drug markets like the Silk Road and its successors. The corporate world has also taken interest in the technology that enables bitcoin, especially its decentralised financial network and the blockchain, the global ledger where all bitcoin transactions are recorded. Many banks are making big bets that real-world financial transactions will one day be run on networks similar to bitcoin, which can operate more quickly, efficiently and securely than traditional financial networks. There are now many competitors to bitcoin, like Ethereum, and their value has also been pushed up by growing interest in the bitcoin technology. But bitcoin has remained the largest so-called cryptocurrency and is generally the one that people use to buy and sell other cryptocurrencies. WHAT ARE THE CURRENCY'S ORIGINS? Bitcoin was introduced in 2008 by a shadowy creator going by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto, who only communicated by e-mail and social messaging. While several people have been identified as likely candidates to be Satoshi, as the creator is known in the world of bitcoin, not one has been confirmed. So the search for Satoshi has gone on. Satoshi created the original rules of the bitcoin network and then released the software to the world in 2009. Whether it is he, she or they, Satoshi largely disappeared from view two years later. Anyone can download and use the software, and Satoshi now has no more control over the network than anyone else using the software.

Glas also utilizes Microsoft's smart voice assistant Cortana and its Azure Cloud to help users save energy while monitoring air quality in the home. Heating and cooling of a residential home accounts for around 48 percent of energy use, making it the largest energy expense for most families, noted Johnson Controls, a provider of HVAC, fire and security systems, and maker of the first electric room thermostat. In commercial buildings, heating and cooling accounts for approximately 40 percent of energy costs. With Microsoft's Cortana voice services built-in, Glas could become a core part of a smart home play. More Than Temperature Control Thermostats that can be controlled remotely via a smartphone or other device generally have been increasing in popularity, but a key plus for Glas is that it is more than a thermostat. It includes sensors that can detect when people are in the room, and adjust the temperature accordingly. Like competing smart environmental devices, including those from Nest and Hive, the Glas smart thermostat is designed to lower energy costs by maintaining desired temperatures in parts of a building that are used more, while maintaining appropriate temperatures in areas that are infrequently accessed. Unlike other wall-mounted units, Glas provides continuous monitoring of both indoor and outdoor air quality. "From the little we know, this looks like a Nest-comparable device," said Roger Entner, principal analyst at Recon Analytics. "Smart home thermostats with some value-add is a growing market, especially in states like Massachusetts that subsidize intelligent thermometers," he told TechNewsWorld. "The air quality and AI is just a value-add to the dumb thermometer most Americans have in their home that drives their air conditioning and heating," Entner added. Glas Talking Voice control could be a distinguishing feature for Glas. Users can tell it the temperature that they want and adjust other settings. "Johnson's Glas is the first thermostat to use Microsoft's Cortana technology to support voice commands/controls," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. "That sets it apart from Google Nest, which doesn't support voice directly -- though it can be managed vocally with a Google Home device," he told TechNewsWorld. "Similarly, the Eccobee4 thermostat can be used with Amazon Alexa." Crowded Smart House For Microsoft and Johnson Controls, it is now a question of whether its partnership product is coming to the market too late or is arriving just in time for the smart home revolution. "This looks mostly like catch-up ball to me," suggested Roger Kay, principal analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates. "Amazon and Google are already in this market. Both have cloud services, smart assistants and AI capabilities," he told TechNewsWorld. "Microsoft is a latecomer, but not too late, because the IoT market is just taking off -- sort of 'better late than never,'" Kay added. The smart thermostat market is still a niche market, however, and may stay that way for a while, due to costs. "At US$250, a Google Nest is about 10 times the cost of a basic digital, programmable thermostat," noted Pund-IT's King. "That's likely to change as digital assistants, like Google Home and Amazon Alexa become more common and provide voice-enabled equivalents of universal remote controls." Home or Office From the information available so far, it does seem that Glas targets commercial properties more than consumers' homes. "That makes sense strategically, since Johnson is known for its HVAC, fire and security systems -- but it also underscores some key Glas features, including air quality controls and the ability to sense when people are present in a space and automatically adjust its settings," said King. "While those points may interest some consumers, they'd be more valuable to businesses looking to better manage their facilities and related costs," he explained. This could be a product that finds itsr market in business settings, but then reaches homes in another version, especially if it should become the central command station in either environment. "The battle is for the IoT hub in the home, office or other building," said Endpoint Technologies' Kay. "Apple wants in on this, too," he added. "This is mostly about not being outflanked in an evolving market -- really the least tapped market of the big three: endpoints, cloud and IoT."
