Antarctic researchers have expected the iceberg to be severed for months.\n\nThe iceberg calving event was first detected by NASA’s satellite, Aqua, and quickly confirmed by other satellites. The deepening rift of the ice shelf in West Antarctica has also been monitored for years. The crack inched its way across 200 km before the mass finally gave way.\n\n*The Antarctic Report* tweeted that the iceberg will be the third largest since satellite tracking began. It measures 200 m thick and its depth below sea level could reach 210 m, according to the European Space Agency (ESA).\n\nThe hype surrounding the event had led to the term “bergxit”, a wordplay on the separation of the ice chunk from Antarctica.\n\n## OF ICE AND LAND\n\nAccording to a study published in The Cryosphere, initial signs of a crack in Larsen C became visible in 2010. Scientists followed the development of the crack closely over the next few years when the crack’s growth began accelerating in 2014.\n\nIn late 2016, NASA’s Operation IceBridge captured a photo of the rift. The crack measured 113 km long and 91 m wide then. The operation, which will end in 2018, replaces a retired satellite by using aircraft to monitor polar ice changes. The ICESat satellite was retired in 2010 due to equipment failure.\n\nLast month, Antarctic research group Project MIDAS revealed that only 5 km of ice held the piece to the ice shelf. Satellite imagery showed that the ice chunk was about to break off into the sea. Its area extended some 44,200 km² before this calving. The calving style of Larsen C has been marked by the parting of tabular-shaped icebergs.\n\n## CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO LARSEN C ICE SHELF CALVING\n\nMIDAS members said that the calving is natural and not caused by man-made climate change. As the firn melts, it loses this air. The resulting meltwater ponds and the absorption of heat and sunlight drive further melting.\n\nThe second factor is the melting of its mass from below. The ice melts as it is exposed to warmer waters of the Weddell Sea, south-east Argentina. Like Larsen B before its collapse, Larsen C is experiencing sinking of the shelf because of the ice loss phenomenon.\n\nLastly, scientists suggested that as the firn melts, the water fills the surface cracks and acts as a wedge, opening the ice sheets further.\n\n## CONSEQUENCES OF THE CALVING\n\n“The Larsen C Ice Shelf, which has a thickness of between 200 and 600 metres, floats on the ocean at the edge of The Antarctic Peninsula, holding back the flow of glaciers that feed into it,” Project MIDAS wrote. These non-floating glaciers would eventually affect sea levels, albeit with a modest impact.\n\nHowever, other ice shelves in the region that are supporting massive ice sheets could be affected by warming. Fears have arisen that these ice sheets, when loosed into the ocean, will raise sea levels by several feet.       "body": "# *A new study sheds light on mental health and autism.*\n\n![Image](https://observer.news/assets/autism-2377410_1280.jpg)\n*Photo: Pixabay*\n\nAccording to a new [study](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10803-017-3292-0), young adults with autism have a higher chance of being diagnosed with a psychiatric condition, such as depression, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).\n\nAnd juggling multiple conditions can make the transition from adolescence to adulthood that much harder.\n\nWhile the exact biological cause of this occurrence is not yet confirmed, some say that environmental factors do play a role in the worsening of mental health in young individuals with autism, or any other type of developmental disabilities, for that matter.\n\n“People with autism aren’t immediately born anxious or with depression,” motivational speaker Daniel Share-Strom, who has autism, told NPR.\n\n![Image](https://observer.news/assets/Share-storm-ted-ed.png)\n*Photo: Ted Ed / Youtube*\n\nHe said that sometimes overly-judgmental people can place unnecessary stress on him and that this would definitely “cause a higher rate of anxiety and depression and even suicide rates”.\n\nHowever, coauthor of the study in question, Yona Lunksy, a senior scientist at York University cautions against using her study as a blanket assumption for every autistic youth.\n\n“When it comes to mental health diagnoses and use of psychiatric services, there’s a really strong need for the entire developmental disabilities community,” she said.\n\n> “I think sometimes people will dismiss something as being part of autism when, in fact, it’s not.       "body": "## Is ‘halal’ divisive and exclusivist?\n\n![Image](https://observer.news/assets/Ramadan-Bazaar-Singapore.jpg)\n*Photo: HHWT*\n\nThe Muslim community raised many questions about *halal* food and certification during the annual bazaar held at Geylang Serai this year.\n\nMany Muslim visitors were doubtful over the new wave of ‘hipster’ food stalls that were set up in the bazaar. [There were also some uproar about the authenticity of the certifications put up by some stalls.](https://sg.style.yahoo.com/halal-not-doubts-raised-food-stalls-geylang-serai-ramadan-bazaar-021358348.html)\n\nSeveral halal food blogs also found that some stalls set up which appeared Muslim-friendly were not halal certified or owned by Muslims. This possibly led to frustration by some patrons as it was probably expected that halal food was to be served at a bazaar catered to Muslims.\n\nThe uproar prompted the Singapore halal authority, MUIS, advising that if they are doubtful, it would be better not to consume food from these stalls.\n\n## WHAT IS CONSIDERED HALAL FOOD?\nThe word *halal* in Arabic means permissible while haram means forbidden. The word *halal* commonly gives the impression that it only applies to food but in fact it is applied to clothes, financial status, relationships and behaviour to name a few.\n\n*Halal* food constitutes of food and drinks that are prepared under strict Muslim dietary laws. [*Halal* food is usually prepared through slaughter](http://www.darul-arqam.org.sg/what-is-islam/what-is-halal-food/) as short prayers are said during the process. To add, the animal slaughtered is dealt a swift death to ensure the least amount of pain and proper drainage of blood. Hygiene, safety and ethical preparation is the focal point of halal food.\n\nContrary to popular belief, *haram* food and drinks include more than just pork, dog meat and alcoholic beverages. [Food items such as amphibious animals, carcass and certain carnivorous prey](http://www.darul-arqam.org.sg/what-is-islam/what-is-halal-food/) such as tigers are also prohibited. Gelatin (sourced from animal bones) is also *haram* depending on its source.\n\nMany misunderstand that *halal* food can only be prepared in certain cuisines from predominantly Islamic cultures. However, many other cuisines such as Korean and Chinese food can be *halal* as well.\n\nIn Singapore, the halal certification is issued by The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS). [According to MUIS, there are seven different types of certification](https://www.muis.gov.sg/home) issued across the food supply chain.\n\nFor an eatery to be *halal* certified, it must meet the requirements set by MUIS in the Eating Establishment Scheme. In the guidelines, [restaurants need to satisfy halal requirements, system requirements and lastly, staffing requirements. These requirements](https://www.muis.gov.sg/home) include sourcing for *halal* ingredients, establishing a *halal* team and appointing a Muslim staff who has undergone the MUIS *Halal* Training Programme.\n\nMUIS also carries out audits of these eateries to ensure that restaurants follow the guidelines even after certification.\n\nIt is important to note that branches of franchises require individual and separate *halal* certification. Also, the certification is voluntary and not forced upon eateries owned by Muslims or those who hire Muslim staff. Establishments in doubt of the certification or process can seek consultation and advice from the [Singapore Muis Halal Standards (SMHS)](https://www.muis.gov.sg/home), a committee comprising of religious scholars and industry leaders.\n\n## *‘HALAL’* IS DIVISIVE & EXCLUSIVIST?\nIn January 2017, [McDonald’s in Malaysia stated that only halal birthday cakes were allowed to be brought into their premises](https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/birthday-cakes-brought-to-mcdonald-s-singapore-outlets-should-be-7532682). This was in response to the franchise’s exception to their ‘no outside food or drinks’ rule. McDonald’s in Singapore also gave the same stance on the ruling.\n\n[This was met with strong criticism](https://sg.news.yahoo.com/mcdonald-halal-cake-rule-paints-islam-intolerant-preacher-095200975.html), painting the practice of Islam as extreme and intolerant. MUIS added that it appreciated McDonald’s ruling but that the religious body was not consulted beforehand. This move could have been made to lessen the stigma of Islam as an extreme and fully rigid religion.\n\nMalay-muslim issues have long been a controversial issue in Singapore.\n\nIn 2015 and 2016, a member of the opposition, Mr Faisal Manap proposed for [Halal kitchens on Navy ships and the inclusion of Malay officers for sensitive positions in the military](http://www.wp.sg/cos-2015-debate-mindef-fair-and-equal-deployment-mp-muhamad-faisal-bin-abdul-manap/). This was rejected by the Senior Minister of State for Defence, Dr Maliki Osman. He explained that the space constraints on navy ships made it difficult for the inclusion of a Halal kitchen, and that this priority belongs to the operational needs of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).\n\n## EXCLUSIVIST TEACHINGS CAUSE MISTRUST\n\nMinister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Yaacob Ibrahim said in [April 2017](http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/exclusivist-teachings-have-no-place-singapore-yaacob) that exclusivists who assert that one culture has absolute superiority to the exclusion of others are not welcome in Singapore. He also noted that there has to be a “conciliatory approach towards finding a common ground” in fostering a harmonious relationship among the various communities in the Republic.\n\n> “Exclusivist teachings cause mistrust to deepen not only between different religious traditions, but also of the life-affirming values within these traditions”\n– **MINISTER-IN-CHARGE OF MUSLIM AFFAIRS, YAACOB IBRAHIM**\n\nDr Yaacob added that Singapore’s approach is such that Muslims can hold steadfast to their religious traditions while contributing to the growth and development of the country.\n\nInstances like this can be divisive in our multiracial society amidst rising Islamophobia.       "body": "# Now you know!\n\n![Image](https://observer.news/assets/escaping-handcuffs.jpg)\n*Photo: United Locksmith*\n\nIn April 2017, [two female students were arrested for using their boarding passes to meet their South Korean idol in the transit area of Changi Airport,](http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/courts-crime/2-students-arrested-for-misusing-boarding-passes-to-meet-k-pop-idol) without the intention to leave Singapore.\n\nThe police issued a statement on Facebook shortly after to remind members of the public that such misuse of boarding passes constitute an offence under the [Protected Areas and Protected Places Act.](https://sso.agc.gov.sg/SL/PPSA1990-S685-2006?DocDate=20110711)\n\n## Besides the misuse of your boarding pass, there are also other less well known offences that you could be liable for in Singapore.\n\n## 1. ANNOYING SOMEONE WITH YOUR BAD BEHAVIOUR IN PUBLIC WHILE DRUNK\nThis falls under section 510 of the Penal Code, which states that whoever, while intoxicated and in a public area or in any place which he cannot enter, and behaves “in such a manner as to cause annoyance to any person”, may be jailed up to six months, fined up to $1,000, or both.\n\nWe probably all had someone in mind while reading this.\n\n## 2. ANNOYING SOMEONE IN PUBLIC THROUGH AN ACT, OR BY RECITING OR UTTERING A SONG WITH OBSCENE LYRICS\nAccording to Section 294 of the Penal Code, this results in up to three months in jail, a fine, or both.\n\nBe sure to check the lyrics before you belt out any song in public.\n\n## 3. SALE, DISTRIBUTION, RENTAL OF “OBSCENE” THINGS\nThis includes paintings, books and figures, and can be found under Section 292 of the Penal Code. Any offenders face a penalty of up to three months in jail, a fine, or both.\n\nFor those questioning the term “obscene” and what constitutes it – it includes anything that tends to “deprave and corrupt persons” who are likely to see or read the materials, according to the Singapore Statutes.\n\n## 4. INTENTIONALLY OBSTRUCTING A PERSON TO PREVENT HIM FROM GOING IN ANY DIRECTION THAT HE IS ALLOWED TO WALK IN\nWe bet you didn’t know that this is an offence.\nAccording to Section 341 of the Penal Code, this offence carries a jail term of up to a month, a fine of up to $1,500, or both.\n\n## 5. USING A FALSE WEIGHT OR MEASURE\nThis falls under Section 265 of the Penal Code – whoever fraudulently using any false weight or false measure of length or capacity, or fraudulently uses any weight or any measure of length or capacity as a different weight or measure from what it is, may be sentenced to up to a year in jail, a fine, or both.\n\n## 6. YOUR DOG INJURING A PERSON\nAny owner of a dog which causes injury to another person may have to deal with a fine of up to $5,000.\n\nSome behavioural classes and a leash would be a better option.\n\n## 7. TAKING A SHOWER OR WASHING YOURSELF ON A PUBLIC ROAD, IN A PUBLIC TANK, RESERVOIR, OR ANY WATER BODY\nThis is not a sight for sore eyes, and also incurs a maximum fine of $1, 000.\n\nPlease save our eyes and wash yourself in a public toilet instead.\n\n## 8. KITE-FLYING OR GAMES WHICH OBSTRUCTS TRAFFIC ON A PUBLIC ROAD\nAnyone kite flying, or games, or any act which obstructs or interferes with the traffic in any public road, or the use of the wires of any telephone may find themselves having to pay a fine of up to $5,000.\n\nWhy risk an offence and your life at the same time?\n\n## 9. ANNOYING SOMEONE BY MAKING NOISE IN ANY WAY\nThis includes musical instruments as well, and those guilty of making noise “to cause or be likely to cause annoyance or inconvenience to the occupier of any premises in the vicinity” may be fined up to $1,000.\n\nWe’ve all had to sit through our neighbours’ screeching violin practice sessions, or angry smashing of the pianos at some point in our lives.\n\n## 10. BRINGING ALCOHOL INTO A PUBLIC HOSPITAL\nWhile alcohol is not the solution, it certainly is part of the offence.\n\nAnyone who takes or tries to take without “due permission” into any public hospital any intoxicating liquor, drug or preparation may be jailed up to two months, fined up to $1,000, or both.\n\n## 11. MAKING BUSINESS DEALS AT MRT STATIONS\nThe cause of woe for many Shopee and Carousell sellers and buyers nationwide, this rule is part of the Rapid Transit Systems Regulations. Specifically, it is the [prohibition against selling goods across the fare gate.](http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/rail-operator-reminds-commuters-of-rule-against-business-deals-in-mrt-stations)\n\nWhile this rule has existed for decades, members of the public were only more aware of it recently, with [news reports](http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/doing-business-mrt-stations-could-earn-you-fine) to warn commuters against doing so and at least a notice in Beauty World MRT station to remind commuters of the offence.\n\nMs Tammy Tan, spokesperson for SBS Transit, explained the need to do so. She said that “for commuter safety and security, [they] do not encourage loitering in [the] premises particularly at stations with high passenger flow.”\n\nShe added that the notice was placed at Beauty World MRT station as there have been an increase in the number of such transactions made there.\n\n## 12. LEAVING YOUR VEHICLE ENGINES IDLING\nUnder the Environmental Protection and Management (Vehicular Emissions) Regulations, it is illegal to leave the engine of a motor vehicle running while it is stationary for reasons other than traffic conditions.\n\nSince June 2016, [repeat offenders who leave the engines of their stationary vehicles switched on have faced higher fines](http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/environment/idling-engines-higher-penalties-for-repeat-offenders-from-june) by the National Environment Agency.\n\nWhile these repeated offenders previously paid $70, they now need to pay $100.       "body": "![Image](https://observer.news/assets/andaman-sentinel-1.jpg)\n\nThey are thought to be the direct descendants of the first human population that migrated out of Africa, and have lived in the Andaman Islands for close to 65,000 years.\n\nTo put that in perspective, that’s 62,000 years before the ancient Egyptians build the pyramids at Giza, and 35,000 years before the last ice age. Their language is unknown. The exact population size has not been confirmed. All efforts by the outside world to make contact with this tribe had been met with hostility to this day.\n\n## WELCOME TO THE NORTH SENTINEL ISLAND.\n\nLocated in the Bay of Bengal, it lies to the west of the southern part of South Andaman Island. Considered the deadliest among all of the Andaman Islands, the North Sentinel is a densely forested island surrounded by coral reefs. It lacks a natural harbour, thus making ship-docking impossible. The inhabitants of the island are a group of indigenous people called the Sentinelese. The estimated population size is between 50 and 400 individuals although this number cannot be relied upon since the census taken by the Indian government was exercised through spotting of the curious natives that appeared out of the forest and onto the beach. It remains to be seen the exact number of natives in the forest grounds.\n\n![Image](https://observer.news/assets/andaman-sentinel-2.jpg)\n*Photo: Google Earth*\n\nThe Sentinelese people survives on local fauna and live on fruits, fish, tubers, wild pigs, lizards and honey. Many attempts were made to make contact but due to the hostile nature of the inhabitants, the Indian government, which has sovereignty over the island, has enforced a 3-mile buffer zone to keep would-be explorers and tourists away. In 1975, a National Geographic documentary titled “Man in Search of Man”, commissioned by the Indian government about the tribes of the Andaman Islands, had film the North Sentinel island. The crew came bearing gifts at the North Sentinel and at one point, a Sentinelese warrior with a bow and arrow shot the director in the thigh. It was the only known documentary of the island.\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https://www.youtube.com/embed/cvTlBp4fDgA\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen></iframe>\n\n*Video: NegroScopy*\n\n\nBefore the Indian government, the British Raj had already made efforts to contact the islanders during the late 1800s. However, the British was more controversial with their approach in which their tactic was to kidnap a member of the tribe, shower him with gifts and then returning him to the island with the intention of demonstrating to the natives the extend of their friendliness.\n\nIn 1880, a British colonial administrator, Maurice Vidal Portman, accompanied by heavily-armed guards, had landed on North Sentinel. It was believe to be the first exploration of the island by outsiders. Several days into their track, Portman, together with his men, kidnapped two elderly adults and 4 children back to Port Blair, an island nearby where he was based.\n\nUnfortunately, the two adults soon got sick and died, possibly due to being exposed to Western diseases like smallpox, measles, and influenza in which they have no immunity against. Portman then returned the four children to the island, packed with gifts for the rest of the tribe. The children were never seen again.\n\nIn 1896, an escaped convict from from Port Blair, had drifted to the shores of the North Sentinel by accident. A search party found his body a few days later on a beach, punctured by arrows and with his throat slit.\n\n![Image](https://observer.news/assets/andaman-sentinel-3.jpg)\n\nOn August 2, 1981, a Hong Kong freighter called the Primose, with 33 crew men and a mascot dog, ran aground on a coral reef roughly 100 meters from the north shore of the island during a typhoon. Despite being in close proximity to shore, the captain of the ship had instructed all his crewmen to stay onboard.\n\n![Image](https://observer.news/assets/andaman-sentinel-4.jpg)\n*Photo: Captain Robert Fore*\n\nA few days into the ordeal, a crewmen from the Primose spotted a group of dark-skinned naked men, armed with bows and arrows making their way towards the ship. This led to the captain of the freighter making a distress call: *“Wild men! Estimate more than 50, carrying various homemade weapons, are making two or three wooden boats. At that point they were already shooting arrows in the direction of the ship but due to the primitive way of how the arrows were constructed, the trajectory could only reach up to a distance of 30 to 40 meters. Mr Trilokinath Pandit, a director of the Anthropological Survey of India, together with his colleagues, had on 4 January, 1991 made the closest recorded encounter yet with the tribe. Even so, it was for a brief period before the Sentinelese would fire ‘warning shots’ with their arrows to signal that the visit was over. As it has been assumed that the Sentinelese tribe do not know how to make fire, the theory of the plane crashing into the island took course.\n\nThe Sentinelese are among the last of the uncontacted people, and the deadliest islanders of the Andaman sea.\n\nPerhaps it’s best we leave them alone.",
