titleThe Smoke of Dreams Burning
body![IMG_20170627_142855866.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmej1hz7kv5H9veFpBL2Fn9hEXpnW2ZMWvovNwe5T92CdD/IMG_20170627_142855866.jpg) “That's a funny cloud.” I said to Joe as the Turtle Van climbed up the mountain toward camp. A few more feet showed us it wasn't funny at all. Smoke billowed up the hillside to meet us, just a mile or so from our mining camp. Instant adrenaline, the smell instinctively dangerous, the sight makes your belly tighten up and your heart race. For a moment the logical brain rebels against reality, it insists this must be a bonfire or a controlled burn or perhaps part of the restoration project in the area --but lizard brain is right this time, and puts the stunned, stammering, useless logical brain down. This is real, an actual emergency, and driving forward is definitely wrong. As we stop the van we hear the helicopter rotor and see it on the ground, out of place, another sign we are in the heart of a wildfire, just beginning. The helicopter lifts and we see the reason it is down, it drags a bag of water on a long rope from the pond at a nearby ranch and carries it, streaming mist and vapor, at desperate speed toward the smoke. The stunned logical brain tries to wake up and process a meaningful plan. Most of what we own is back at camp, this was just a water and grocery run, mining and camping equipment is ahead, but the lizard brain insists we should run. A quick discussion and we move toward the fire, careful on every corner, expecting fire engines any moment, but the road back to Mayer is long, narrow, and primitive, they have not had time to get here. On the downside of the hill we can see the fire, it is definitely upstream from our camp--perhaps a mile or two--it's black cloud already blowing back toward the pine flat ranches and town. Two rangers are parked in the road, and they answer that yes it is a wildfire, and we can go no further. It looks small, but furious, and it grows before our eyes, logical brain finally becomes useful in the crisis, and reminds us that we have all we need: each other, our dog, and our home – all can drive to safety. Things are things, and they will be there or they will be gone, and life is what matters now. As we drive out towards town we see others evacuating, and firefighters driving in. By the time we find a place on the edge of town to park the van 3 helicopters are picking up water and the sun is setting. Ranchers bring out trailers of what livestock they can, miners and campers who have not been seen in weeks congregate (against their nature) and even speak to one another on the edges of the forest they love. Those with homes in the forest have the most to lose, and we speak in hushed tones our hopes their land is spared. The officials that speak to us have fear in their eyes, their voices also low, this solidifies the feeling of dread. There is a period of waiting, watching, and worrying while an emergency becomes a disaster. Every single person we meet is doing all they can, exactly what they should, responsible and brave, and yet nothing stops this progression. The smoke plume grows until it dominates the sky. As it gets dark the glow of the flames is visible--it shifts, waxes, wanes, but in the end only grows larger. We have seen disaster spawned, seen it take its first few tottering steps, and already it was too late to stop it. There is only time to flee with what you can save. We retreat in steps, staying close until the fire pushes us out – evacuated three times now-- but it is still flight, we are running in slow motion, unsure if we are still miners or now only campers with literally not a pot to piss in. We wait at Copper Basin. A kindred spirit ranger spent a little time helping us, but the advice is painful. Wait for the summer monsoons to start, that may be all that can stop this fire now. 1% contained means the fire is choosing its own course. We must choose ours. Logical brain – get on that.

titleYou might be a protester...
bodyIf you've stood in a river in North Dakota and taken a face full of teargas without violence you can call yourself a protester. If you've left the free speech "zone" and been arrested or kicked around to bring public attention to your cause, you can call yourself a protester. If you sacrifice your own comfort, freedom, money, time, and safety to stand up for yourself, your children, your environment, your livelihood, and the rights of others who cannot (or are terrified to) defend themselves, you can call yourself a protester. If you join a mob and attack innocent people who have no accountability for your situation you should call yourself a rioter. If you riot because you didn't get your way, steal the rights and property of others, in order to steal public attention from legitimate issues, you should call yourself a media whore. If you are paid, brought in by bus, and given riot supplies, if you sell yourself as a pawn and a soldier in a war against your own democracy, you can call yourself a traitor to your country. If you believe that an attack is the same thing as a protest, you should call yourself a terrorist. Words matter.

body@notyomomma Thanks! I appreciate the commentary. I get more exposure looking for quality posts like his and providing counterpoints. My average post barely makes $0.50 and it takes a lot more effort than simply posting a comment like this. Remember that under the law, contracts are whatever people agree to. However any contract which is illegal is prima facie invalid. One affirmative criteria when deciding that a contract is illegal is that the contract allows for [unjust enrichment](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unjust_enrichment). But the law requires that you take affirmative steps though in order to preserve your rights. This has been the core of my argument on the DAO. The logic is this... When taken as a whole, Ethereum is a contract enforcement network. Mining is enforcing. The DAO was a contract that allowed one party to unjustly enrich themselves at the expense of others. Ergo the contract was rendered invalid the moment this was discovered. Since each miner is operated by individuals, they are each severally liable for attempting to enforce an illegal contract. Like a bill collector who keeps trying collect on bad debt. The solution was actually to remove IP of ETH away from the code base of ETH and spin a new ETH codebase which "unmade" that section of the blockchain. Essentially redacting the section of the contract which allowed for unjust enrichment. This new codebase became the "real" ETH the moment the IP holders decided to grant that code those rights. This induced a split. The split was originally just the DAO attacker's exit scam. But it ended up becoming a reality unto itself. Because everyone seems pretty well happy with the split, and everyone ended up richer, the ETC/ETH illegality question is moot now. This is because everyone was made whole.

I appreciate the commentary.\n\nI get more exposure looking for quality posts like his and providing counterpoints.\nMy average post barely makes $0.50 and it takes a lot more effort than simply posting a comment like this.\n\nRemember that under the law, contracts are whatever people agree to.\nHowever any contract which is illegal is prima facie invalid.\nOne affirmative criteria when deciding that a contract is illegal is that the contract allows for [unjust enrichment](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unjust_enrichment).\nBut the law requires that you take affirmative steps though in order to preserve your rights.\n\nThis has been the core of my argument on the DAO.\n\nThe logic is this...\nWhen taken as a whole, Ethereum is a contract enforcement network.\nMining is enforcing. \n\nThe DAO was a contract that allowed one party to unjustly enrich themselves at the expense of others.\nErgo the contract was rendered invalid the moment this was discovered.\nSince each miner is operated by individuals, they are each severally liable for attempting to enforce an illegal contract. Like a bill collector who keeps trying collect on bad debt.\n\nThe solution was actually to remove IP of ETH away from the code base of ETH and spin a new ETH codebase which \"unmade\" that section of the blockchain. Essentially redacting the section of the contract which allowed for unjust enrichment. This new codebase became the \"real\" ETH the moment the IP holders decided to grant that code those rights.\nThis induced a split. The split was originally just the DAO attacker's exit scam. But it ended up becoming a reality unto itself.\n\nBecause everyone seems pretty well happy with the split, and everyone ended up richer, the ETC/ETH illegality question is moot now. bodyI think you could draft your thoughts into an article worthy of standing alone, and I'd read it, you make many valid points. With some experience in law I agree that a contract which is unlawful, a hit for example, would not become lawful if it were translated into code. A contract must be within the confines of the laws where it is drafted. That said, if a contract is valid when written, in word or in code, it will be upheld as "law" regardless of the outcome. If it allows a withdrawal and that withdrawal is made, arguing that the author of the contract didn't intend that outcome won't change it, and there will be no legal recourse. Those who write vague ambiguous code or contracts cannot rewrite history and steal their funds back. That action is at the heart of the debate, in my opinion. So Code is not law, I agree. Reality is law. Re-writing history because you didn't intend it to work out the way it did is arrogance at the level of demi-gods.

bodyExtremely well said, and an inspiration to better things in the world of smart contracts. Joseph Campbell would also point out that justice is blind for a reason. Our human perceptions are notoriously inaccurate, and easily swayed by emotion and peer pressure. "where it's difficult to model intent programmatically, one can still develop a domain specific language to capture it for humans to arbitrate" This captures the right path, I think. We can build in a method to ensure intentions are carried out in a lawful manner, while maintaining a ledger that documents our errors for correction, rather than attempting to erase them and rewrite history.

bodyNo matter what happens to the fiat debt-based economy I will have my precious metals You are so right. As most if not all fiat currencies eventually default to zero, leaving the last holding with worthless paper. So the paper money we have in our pockets and banks might be the biggest ponzi scheme of all time. Especially since the government confiscated gold from the poublic 80 years ago. Consider this, President Kennedy was assassinated after he announced plans to bring back the gold standard for the American public. This would have put our wealth back in our pockets while holding off the further establishment of a centralized banking system. Just food for thought, Ron

Just food for thought, Ron",

titleTo Free Yourself, You Must Free Your Money - or, Why Old Ladies Buy BTC and ETC
bodyI didn't consider myself old until I got into BTC. I thought I was hip, cool, edgy, figuring out how to buy that first piece of virtual currency. Prior to that just a stack of silver rounds proved me to be one of the awakened. Then I joined Polo to do a little trading, see what it was about, and I suddenly found out I am either: A. Not real. A lie, a figment, a cover, a punk practical joke waiting to be revealed, or B. An ancient, doddering fool who somehow wandered into a rave wearing some slightly stained Depends. Both A and B are false. Yes, female, yes, over 40, yes, day trading and investing right alongside the young bucks with their smoking GPUs. My husband and I got into crypto for all the same reasons you did, and perhaps some others you haven't been around long enough to consider. Centralization, control, regulation, and the inevitable fall of both the stock markets and the fiat currencies, that goes without saying. I've watched the global debt clock, I've researched the European and Asian markets, I know about the Bilderberg Group. I've watched the collapse in Venezuela, which I do not believe to be the result of socialism, but an early view into our own future. But that's another article altogether. The only way to protect your assets, the only way to cash out, is precious metals and crypto-currency. As long as your "money" is inside the system controlled by a centralized group who own 51% of all the wealth on earth, it isn't really yours. It can be taken from you on a whim, it can evaporate overnight, it can devalue until its nothing but toilet paper, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. I've eliminated debt from my lifestyle, and invested in ETC immediately after the hardfork as a gamble, but a good one, to raise enough in my crpto-wallets to go off grid entirely. Its an essential first step in doing so, in my opinion. Until you free your money from the fiat system you can't consider yourself free enough to go nomad, or off grid. Not when your nest egg and emergency fund are outside your control. To free yourself you must first free your money. It's been a dream of ours for years to go on the road and live simply and comfortably. Of course we need internet, lets not be crazy. So far we made enough to buy our van - its now stripped bare and being remodeled, because for the first time this is a real possibility, beyond a dream, almost real. No matter what happens to the fiat debt-based economy I will have my precious metals, my BTC, and a crypto portfolio. The feeling is so liberating that the nomad life is suddenly possible. I shall dodder around in my little turtle home with my husband, with satellite internet, and faith in the rise of BTC. I intend to retire early on crypto, within a year, if all goes well. Someone said in the trollbox "When my grammy buys BTC I am selling out." I laughted, but I hope you don't all feel that way, crypto-geeks-and-gods. This is what it looks like when mainstream acceptance starts. The cool old ladies will come first. It's a sign of good things to come. Oh, and ETC Rebels Unite! Momma needs a new tranny for the van.

bodyThe good news is that we aren't in this process alone. There are a lot of potential allies if we are willing to be open and work with people. The community needs to stay positive and move methodically.

bodyI like the idea of the hybrid model, and keeping mining part of the process while enabling a fair and transparent governance model. The section on code as law is sobering, and I look forward to seeing the direction we take as a community on this front. Earning trust will be essential. This is an opportunity to create a roadmap based on the community's combination of experience and cutting edge knowledge -- which confirms and enhances trust in the unsullied blockchain. Thank you for the kick-start and being willing to take the brunt of the abuse for stepping up.
