| title | A Mountain Bikers Journey |
| body | I took a fascination, actually an addiction, to mountain biking in 2012. At that time I was 49 years of age, over weight (fat), unfit (fat) and eating unhealthy (which helped me get..... fat). So how and why did i as a physical wreck decide to mount a mountain bike? It was new years eve and good mate (Terry) and I were off roading in our four wheel drives near Mount Stirling after camping near the iconic Craig's Hut in the Victorian High Country. As we traversed on a rugged track we came across a man and women on bikes. It was the last place you would think to find people riding bikes. We stopped to have a chat with them and found out that they had travelled all the way from Queensland to ride this mountain bike trail called Stonefly. Ignorantly we ask where was this so called Stonefly trail located (thinking the poor buggers had got lost). With joyful enthusiasm they said 'right here'. They pointed to something in the bush and Terry and I finally saw a very narrow trail disappearing into the mountain scrub. The couple explain that they came down from Queensland to ride this trail as it was a unique trail specifically designed for mountain biking and was on there 'to do list' as mountain bikers. Terry and I glanced at the trail and looked at each other and said - 'how hard could it be?' So for the next month we committed to get ourselves conditioned to ride this Stonefly trail. I pulled out my old Huffy Mountain bike from the shed, which 15 years ago cost almost $100.00! I pumped up the tyres, oiled the chain and replaced the tiny rubber brake pads and set off to get fit for epic ride in the mountains. Terry and I set a side a weekend for this ride, we did our research on the trails and how to navigate it, booked a shuttle bus from Mirimbah to get us to the top of Mt Buller where it all begins. Over the four weeks of intense training which included about 2 or 3 bike rides a week. The distance we covered with each ride was about 10-12 km. Once we did 15 km at a mountain bike part not far from where we live (Lysterfield) and we noted this as major achievement of fitness and endurance. Mind you we were overtaken by everyone on the trail but naively we felt that we were in good condition to conquer Stonefly. After a month of training we headed up to Mt Buller full of enthusiasm and confidence. We got on a shuttle at Mirimbah that took us to the top of Mt Buller and the beginning of the trail. As we were loading our bikes on the trailer and making our way onto the small bus I made an interesting observation. The other bikes on the trailers looked rather sophisticated, they had dual suspension, disk brakes, aluminium or carbon framed and looked very fancy, where as I had an old huffy with the old fashion rubber pads as brakes, a steel frame and no suspension whatsoever. I got a few strange looks from the other riders and one guy asked was I actually going to ride the Huffy, in which I replied - of course! The other glaring thing was how fit and lean these other riders looked. Terry and I didn't have the physique that these other riders had and I started to wonder what had we got ourselves into? On the way up the mountain we got talking with one young chap who had ridden the trail before, we asked a number of questions such as how hard is this trail, could be get lost, seriously - how hard can it be? This young fella said he would keep an eye out for us on the trail. Terry and I had no idea what we were in for and this young fella figured out quickly that we had no idea what we were about to endure. I can't remember the name of this young man but if I ever see him again I have a lot to be thankful for because of him. Let me explain. Within the first 10 minutes of the trail we realised three things. 1 - Our bikes were utterly useless for the terrain we were riding. 2 - We were utterly useless as we had no idea how to ride a mountain bike in such difficult terrain. 3 - Our fitness, lets say on a scale from 1 to 10 we were about .5 - completely our of our physical depth. The amount of times I fell off my bike, I went over the handle bars several times and blood was trickling from a number of spots on my legs. Terry was no better, he was struggling to. My bike was slowing disintegrating, I was hurting and we were in the middle of nowhere in the mountains on a remote narrow single track with only one reason to keep going - this young man whom we met on the bus. He would ride ahead of us then stop somewhere and patiently wait for us, ask us how we were doing when encourage with these simple words - you guys can do this, don't give up, you are doing well. With this simple encouragement Terry and I pushed on, literally! We couldn't ride the bikes up the hills so we walked and pushed the bikes, we were off our bikes more than we were on when attempting the Stonefly trail. Out of all that we got wrong, we at least we had done one thing right - we had adequate supplies of food and water in our backpacks, thankfully. As each hour went by our friend would be waiting for us and confidently telling us we can do this. He sacrificed his time and his big day out to wait and encourage two over weight, unfit old men. I was so impressed and very appreciative that he would do this for us, we couldn't let him down so we were determined to complete what we had started. He was inspiring us and just said the right thing at the right time. It was like God gave us an Angel to see us through. Once we had finally completed the what seemed like a huge climb and a crazy technical descent back to the start of Stonefly our friend said it's all downhill from here boys. You won't need me from here on as you can easily make it back to the bottom of the mountain on the fire trails. He rode off into the distance never to be seen again, Terry and I then descended on a trail called the Delatite Track which is a beautiful trail that follows the Delatite River back to Mirimbah at the base of Mt Buller where our journey began earlier in the day. Terry and I we exhausted, we had completed 35 km of gruelling mountain bike trails in almost 7 hours - that's a speed of just over 5 kph. The crazy thing was that even though we were mentally and physically exhausted Terry and I could not keep the smile off our faces. There was such a deep sense of joy in what we did that somehow I fell in love with this thing called mountain biking. How bloody awesome is this! To this day I own a great amount of gratitude to this one man who kept on saying - it's OK, you can do it! Since then Terry and I have travelled and rode countless trails, we have raced in mountain biking events and still 5 years on we look for new trails, new adventures and new challenges with our mountain bikes. Yes, I have proper mountain bikes now - 4 to be precise, 1 x 26" hard tail, 1 x 29" dual suspension trail bike, 1 x 27.5" dual suspension trail/cross country bike and 1 x 27.5" long travel dual suspension All Mountain Bike for enduro's and downhill fun stuff. Mountain biking has changed and transformed me in a good way. I'm fit, I have a terrific network of friends that are like minded, I have travelled to many amazing mountain biking locations here in Victoria and Tasmania plus New Zealand & Iceland. These have been memorable experiences. After a stressful day with the business I can get on that mountain bike and hit those local trails. That joy that I first experienced returns to my heart and that smile spreads across my face and I think to my self - how hard can it be! |

| title | A Mountain Bikers Journey |
| body | I took a fascination, actually an addiction, to mountain biking in 2012. |
