| title | Heroes in Crisis #1 Review |
| body | Superheroes lie dead in the fields surrounding an isolated Nebraska farmstead: Wally West Flash, Hotspot, Blue Jay, Arsenal - and Sanctuary, who was treating them all. An unlikely figure - Harley Quinn - sets out for vengeance against the killer… Booster Gold?! Every time I pick up an event book there’s a little voice in my head saying, hoping, maybe this is the one event comic that won’t suck donkey testicles? It’s too early to tell but, hey lookit that, the first issue of Heroes in Crisis wasn’t bad! Clay Mann’s art has never looked better. My gawd, the linework is utterly stunning. Bordering on photorealistic, his Harley is wonderfully expressive, even his Booster Gold looks amazing and that dude’s body language isn’t nearly as lively. I loved the sonic boom in Superman’s wake as he swooped down to the farmhouse and that cover is fantastic. Full marks for the artistry on this comic which is flawless. Tom King hasn’t really hooked me with the story. I don’t care about Booster or Harley, let alone the D-list dead characters, some, like Hotspot and Blue Jay, I’ve never even heard of, making it impossible to be affected by their “deaths”. And is this the first time we’re hearing about Sanctuary - the superheroes’ doctor or something? Is he that big a deal? Not that it’s badly written but the story is definitely missing that “wow” factor, at least so far. Heroes in Crisis #1 is a mediocre beginning to a seemingly unexciting series but I’m still curious to see if Tom King can pull off a good event comic - if anyone can it’s this dude - as well as what else he’s got up his sleeve, so I’ll be coming back for more. |

\n\nTom King hasn’t really hooked me with the story. \n\nNot that it’s badly written but the story is definitely missing that “wow” factor, at least so far. Heroes in Crisis #1 is a mediocre beginning to a seemingly unexciting series but I’m still curious to see if Tom King can pull off a good event comic - if anyone can it’s this dude - as well as what else he’s got up his sleeve, so I’ll be coming back for more.",

| title | Batman: Damned #1 Review |
| body | Batman: Damned #1 kicks off DC’s Black Label imprint where fans can see their favourite characters - though it’s mostly Batman - engage in more adult content. Which apparently means full frontal shots of Bruce Wayne’s junk! Yeah, that’s definitely what’s been missing from the main Batman title… and it’s also the sole reason why copies of this issue are going for bonkers money on eBay as DC have said they’ll censor that panel in future printings. The Joker is dead - whodunit? Or more accurately: is he dead - or is Batman dead? The comic opens with Batman shot, bleeding out, then falling off a bridge while his ghostly parents wave at him. He wakes up to the news which shows the corpse of the Joker having fallen to his death from the same bridge… hmm… Damned is a very suggestive title, the (ostensibly horror) story is peppered with several of DC’s supernatural characters - John Constantine the Hellblazer, Deadman and Zatanna - and Bruce’s dad flips him a coin, perhaps the fee to pay Charon the ferryman of Hades. Batman doesn’t seem to be himself either and has a breakdown in the Batcave…? It’s a very patchy, vague story. While it’s probable that Batman is somehow in the afterlife and is being guided by an unlikely Virgil, Constantine, it’s not clear why he’s gone to Hell or how solving the mystery of the Joker’s death will do anything. There are numerous flashbacks to Bruce’s childhood where his father Thomas is rewritten as a philanderer and Bruce was apparently haunted by a teenage witch?! But I get why it’s deliberately unfocused: to draw you in (not for me it didn’t), place the reader into Batman’s unbalanced perspective and, most likely, mask what I suspect is a feeble plot - I mean, neither character’s really dead or will stay dead so Brian Azzarello has to play silly buggers to make this feel like less of a waste of time. Still, I didn’t find the story particularly enthralling and Constantine’s narration seemed both pretentious and over-stylised - I think Azzarello was trying for an accent but he can’t replicate Liverpudlian speech convincingly. Lee Bermejo’s art though is faultlessly fan-bloody-tastic! He’s one of my favourite artists and every single page is gorge. I love his Batman, particularly those amazing shit-kicking boots that look so solid, but mostly for capturing the raw physicality of the character - no-one else makes you believe the power within this guy. Damned looks to be set in the same world as Azzarello/Bermejo’s last Batman collaboration, Joker, which featured more realistic takes on DC characters. Zatanna looked sexy as hell as a punky street magician and Deadman was drawn with transparent sinewy red muscles, like something out of a medical textbook, instead of his usual red uniform, which was a really interesting interpretation of his look. This first issue hasn’t totally confirmed to me that this is going to be a great story but I’m mildly intrigued and the comic is readable enough. It certainly benefits from Lee Bermejo’s art which is the star attraction here (unless you’re into batcocks). Given how good their Joker book was, I’m willing to give these guys the benefit of the doubt but Batman: Damned #1 is still a very mediocre comic and, thanks to the gratuitous nudity, a slightly bizarre introduction to DC Black Label. |

| title | Oblivion Song, Chapter One Review |
| body | Giant monsters walk the land while small groups of humans try to survive - Oblivion Song is basically Image’s answer to Dark Horse’s BPRD: Hell on Earth, and, like that series, it’s pants! The more detailed plot outline is that 10 years ago 300,000 people were transported to another dimension – “Oblivion” – after a crazy science experiment gone wrong. Now, said crazy scientist is trying to rescue as many of those 300k, as well as his brother, through solo inter-dimensional trips. Hmm. Sounds like it’s gonna be a while ‘til he catches them all! The problem is that the broader story I mention above is gleaned mostly from the back cover blurb – Robert Kirkman’s definitely not brought his A game to his new ongoing title and, aside from the “scientist looking for his brother” storyline, I had no idea what was going on for most of the book. I also didn’t care – this isn’t even a remotely interesting read! Indistinct story, generic amorphous blob monsters chasing poorly- defined (if at all) characters across your typical post-apocalyptic wasteland – bo-ring! It was the scene between two characters – couldn’t tell you who they were - in a restaurant talking about ending their affair that I realised I couldn’t care less about this series and that I wouldn’t be coming back for any more. Full of tedious, bland nothing from the uninspired writing to the fugly art, the first book of Oblivion Song is one-note, astonishingly dull and unimpressive – Kirkman’s worst series in years. |

| title | SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome Review |
| body | Historian Mary Beard covers the first 1000 years of Roman history, from its humble beginnings when (supposedly) Romulus killed his brother Remus before founding what would become the city of Rome, to around the time when Christianity sunk its fangs into the empire to become its main religion, in SPQR. It sounds exhausting and I’m here to tell you that it’s even worse in the reading! I got through the whole mammoth affair but it wasn’t worth it. Beard’s core thesis essentially centres around this one question: how did the Romans become such a major player in the ancient world? And the answer is fairly simply: it conquered one group of people in one country after another, taking their land and rebranding the people as Roman citizens. It was the great melting pot, the America, of its day. Simple. Got it. I’m not enough of a Roman historian to argue its veracity but it sounds kosher to me. Except Beard repeats this point ad infinitum. Oh my word, it becomes beyond tedious to read this same statement again and again as it gets run into the ground over the course of the entire book! Not that she’s much more interesting in other areas. Beard is a scholar and her book tends to read like most academic texts: it’s dry, esoteric and dull, with a tendency to cram in vast amounts of detail that nobody could possibly retain. Which isn’t to say it’s inaccessible – Beard writes in a way most people will be able to follow – it’s just that a lot of the book focuses on the minutiae of how Roman society operated and that turned out to not be very enthralling. She’s also writing narrative history but completely fails to create a compelling, clear or easy-to-follow overall picture of the first 1000 years of Roman history. She jumps about constantly, going off on tangents, skipping over entire periods - the book is mostly a lethal combination of boring and confusing. I do appreciate the difficulty of her task. It’s ambitious and I don’t think anyone can condense a millennia’s worth of history into 600 pages, particularly given the huge number of surviving documents from this era. And that’s another thing that really annoyed me: the repetition that a lot of what was written shouldn’t be trusted outright as the Romans had a habit of self-mythologizing. A good historian will only believe something if there’s evidence to back it up. Duuuuh! As a history student myself, that seemed blindingly obvious, and, even if someone reading this isn’t, does it bear mentioning over and over and over and… ? Her book begins just before the Roman Republic ends and the Roman Empire begins, with the rise of Rome’s most famous ruler, Julius Caesar (before jumping back to the very beginning with the early Roman kings - gah!). And Beard makes the worthwhile note that, though an important point in Rome’s history, it was a superficial change at best - Rome was never a bastion of democracy to begin with (and the ancient form of democracy was immensely different from today’s version of democracy anyway). It’s the most salient piece of information I learned – I was aware of this before but never had it fully formed in my mind until Beard stated it. The title SPQR - meaning Senātus Populusque Rōmānus ("The Roman Senate and People") – in addition to being an accurate description of the book is cleverly ironic. That was basically it for me unfortunately – what history I didn’t already know felt too bitty, mundane and inconsequential to register. SPQR is, of course, an informative book but, man alive, I was damn near bored to tears most of the time! It hasn’t killed my interest in the Romans but it has dampened my enthusiasm for the subject for some time. I honestly think I’ve learned more about the Romans from fiction than I have from Beard’s nonfiction. So instead of this, if you’re interested in the Romans, I heartily recommend Robert Harris’ Cicero trilogy, Robert Graves’ I, Claudius novels, and even the Asterix comics instead. They too are illuminating but vastly more engaging to read! |

| title | Gideon Falls, Volume 1: The Black Barn Review |
| body | A ritual killer’s doin’ his thang in the small town of Gideon Falls. A Catholic priest is dispatched to replace the previous Father who recently died in strange circumstances. A mental patient with a face mask wanders the city collecting “special” pieces of garbage. Both priest and nutbar have visions of a black barn. *Yawns* Oh, what does it all mean? The creative team behind Old Man Logan, Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino, reunite for their first Image series, Gideon Falls. And it’s not very good! I feel like Lemire watched two of the crappiest, most overrated, yet absurdly popular, TV shows of recent years, Mr Robot and Stranger Things, and decided to do something derivative of them. The mental patient storyline seemed similar to the main character of Mr Robot’s while the small town sheriff/supernatural goings-on was very much in the Stranger Things vein. Even without those shows’ flavourings, neither storyline is interesting. I also didn’t care about any of the characters who weren’t at all likeable or compelling. The problem is that Lemire’s writing is too obtuse and vague to latch onto. What exactly is going on – why am I meant to care? Something about a religious war between good and evil – like Robert Kirkman’s Outcast but not as good (and even that series isn’t a hill of beans) – while The Black Barn is like The Dark Tower. I found it impossible to be invested in anything that was happening. Lemire looks to do be doing something like what he did a few years ago in his Vertigo book Trillium with the parallel worlds/storylines – the priest is in one world/timeline, the mental patient is in another. I think that’s what the visual inversions mean – and that last panel. It’s just another unoriginal aspect bolted onto this patchwork of other pop culture elements. Andrea Sorrentino’s art is surprisingly underwhelming given his usual quality work, though to be fair he’s not given anything very exciting to draw – lots of mundane everyday stuff for the most part. The visual spectacles are reserved for the batshit final chapter though when Sorrentino’s allowed to cut loose, drawing some remarkable, abstract stuff as the priest and some others venture into Lemire’s cut-price Upside Down. Gideon Falls, Volume 1: The Black Barn is barnstormingly unoriginal and uninspired. Maybe Lemire’s going somewhere more engaging in the next book/s but I didn’t see enough in this first one to want to keep going and find out. |

| title | So Buttons: Man of, Like, a Dozen Faces Review |
| body | Jonathan Baylis’ collection of slice-of-life comics, So Buttons: Man of, Like, a Dozen Faces, reminded me of Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor, wherein our man related autobiographical stories drawn by a variety of artists. They’re not as interesting as Pekar’s comics – Pekar was just a better writer – but there are some fun gems amidst some dross. I enjoyed the anecdotes about Baylis interning at Marvel Comics in the early ‘90s where he got to see John Romita Sr draw Thor and met Joe Simon, co-creator of Captain America. I loved that they were drawn by Fred Hembeck too, known for his parodies of Marvel’s comics. Probably because I’m a sucker for dogs, my favourite story was about how he got his beloved Boston Terrier, Mocha, couched into a history of the pets he’s owned, which was very touching. The strip about his uncle relating a traumatic incident from years ago when he was in the Navy was interesting too and I’ve added the war movie The Big Red One to my film watch list after his talk-up. And it’s always good to see the art of Noah Van Sciver and Dean Haspiel. A number of the stories though are unremarkable and instantly forgettable. He once met R. Crumb, he once saw one of his favourite directors, Jim Jarmusch, having a smoke, and he and his girlfriend once mistook a rotting seal fin to a human hand. Some are so banal I’m surprised they even made it into the book: his dad likes a specific make of socks, moms know best when it comes to cooking, he has a weird system for eating M&Ms, and he’s very specific about his coffee…! It’s not an impressive book but So Buttons was a decent enough read. I expect it’d only appeal to fans of Harvey Pekar-style slice-of-life comics though. |

"body": "\n\nJonathan Baylis’ collection of slice-of-life comics, So Buttons: Man of, Like, a Dozen Faces, reminded me of Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor, wherein our man related autobiographical stories drawn by a variety of artists. They’re not as interesting as Pekar’s comics – Pekar was just a better writer – but there are some fun gems amidst some dross. \n\nI enjoyed the anecdotes about Baylis interning at Marvel Comics in the early ‘90s where he got to see John Romita Sr draw Thor and met Joe Simon, co-creator of Captain America. I loved that they were drawn by Fred Hembeck too, known for his parodies of Marvel’s comics. \n\nProbably because I’m a sucker for dogs, my favourite story was about how he got his beloved Boston Terrier, Mocha, couched into a history of the pets he’s owned, which was very touching. The strip about his uncle relating a traumatic incident from years ago when he was in the Navy was interesting too and I’ve added the war movie The Big Red One to my film watch list after his talk-up. And it’s always good to see the art of Noah Van Sciver and Dean Haspiel. \n\nA number of the stories though are unremarkable and instantly forgettable. \n\nIt’s not an impressive book but So Buttons was a decent enough read. I expect it’d only appeal to fans of Harvey Pekar-style slice-of-life comics though.",
