There are no exceptions, and you should know the difference so you can more efficaciously pick a means to your end.\n\n# Custodial & Non-Custodial Wallets\n<br>\n\n\nA custodial wallet is a wallet that has a 3rd party knowing the private key to a wallet that you are using, while oftentimes you do not know the private key.\n\nA non-custodial wallet is a wallet that you know the private key to and often are the only one that knows it.\n\nNow that it is clear what the simple difference is, let's get into the pros and cons.\n\n## Custodial Crypto Wallet\n\n*Pros*\n\nThey are often easy for beginners. Don't have to remember the private key; just remember the account password.\nNot remembering key/pass ≠ lost funds. Can recover it since 3rd party knows it. Risk of losing funds isn't on you.\nTrading internally can mean no transaction (tx) fees since there's no actual tx occurring.\nTx can possibly be reversed if something malicious happens.\n\n*Cons*\n\n\nDon't have exclusive use of wallet. You are not your \"own bank.\"\nAccount can be closed at any point for any reason.\nSite can be hacked and funds lost, unlike cryptographic private keys.\nSite can take funds are run with them (ex. Mt. Gox.)\n\n\n## Summary\n\nWhile it is easier for beginners and people with lower tech skills, the control of the wallet is not exclusive to the person that has the account. Yes, the risk of losing funds via forgetting a code is greatly decreased, but the security of the wallet is jeopardized in other ways.\n\nMany exchanges have this type of wallet for easier and faster trading. Two examples are Bittrex and Binance.\n\n## Non-Custodial Crypto Wallet\n\n*Pros*\n\nExclusive control of wallet unless wallet \"owner\" shares private key.\nNot waiting on 3rd party to approve tx.\nGives you an option of using cold wallets, which offer better security.\nHardware wallets are safe from even some malicious software since the signing of the tx happens offline.\n\n*Cons*\n\nLoss of private key = loss of funds. No way to recover other than finding or remembering key.\nCan be expensive if hardware wallet.\nCold wallets are harder to trade with than hot wallets.\n\n## Summary\n<br>\nWhile the risk of losing the private key is on the person who made the wallet, one can be \"their own bank\" and have complete control of the wallet. The security of it is very high since the weak point is not a password found on a centralized website.\n\nThere are many types of this wallet including paper, hardware, and apps.       "body": "There is seemingly a million things to know about blockchain technology, and today I'll be covering one important concept: Proof of Work. This is what underlies many blockchains' security.\n\n## <center>What's Proof of Work?</center>\n\nIt's a method to validate the transactions on a blockchain, i.e. a \"public online ledger which records all...transactions\" that uses cryptography to validate the transactions.\n\nWhat happens is that \"blocks\" are \"mined.\" A block is a group of transactions, and these blocks are mined by people, i.e. miners, who run a program and complete cryptographic equations. What these equations do is prove that the funds haven't been double-spent and that the transaction was a valid one.\n\nThese miners solve these equations according to rules and then pretty much say, \"Here's the answer; this transaction was in/valid.\" The answer is the \"proof of work;\" proving one used energy to solve the equation. The reward for figuring out the answer is a portion of newly minted cryptocoin and a portion of the transaction fees. The goal is to find the correct hash - verifying the authenticity of a transaction.\n\nA hash is an alphanumerical string of text that has a fixed length. Each time a computer tries to solve a cryptographic equation using blockchain software it puts out a hash.
