      "body": "After close to five hours on a mini bus we were finally coming up on our destination, the less frequented by tourist area of Ba Be national park/ lake, I had never heard of it before and judging by the fact Chau and i were two of about six people going not many others had heard of it either. \n\nLast 30-45 min of the journey to the inhabited parts of Ba Be had been over some very rocky and mountainous terrain but i guess it all just adds to the sense of going off the beaten track. After reaching a few clustered buildings with homestay signs out front our bus stopped and all the passengers except Chau and i were told this is their booked accommodation, seems we were staying a bit further along the road. \n\nAnother 10 min saw us at out homestay, our homestay like many in Asia was pretty basic but for the prices we were paying you can't really complain. After dropping our bags we went to find our hosts in the hope of hiring a scooter (i recommend, or at least a push bike) and went exploring. Exploring by scooter is a lot of fun and there is almost no traffic making it much easier than pretty much the rest of Vietnam, after driving about all afternoon and seeing some amazing countryside we realised there didn't seem to be that much to do on our own so went to find a tourist office. \n\n![IMGP0186.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeg3RrQ7fWuxVMTS68hKHBi4FYp8uynTrCepBwubcctxX/IMGP0186.jpg)\nNot a bad view from out guesthouse\n\nWe found a building that advertised tours down at the lake and found out that anything worth seeing has to happen by boat around the lake, being the case we made a deal with one of the locals who agreed to take us to the sights the next morning so we went back to our guesthouse to prepare! \n\nDue to the remoteness and lack of large tourist numbers your dining is pretty much down to the guesthouses so be prepared if you don't like the local food. \n\nThe next day we were off bright and early at 7am and down to the boats to start the day of sightseeing around the lake, our first stop was Na Phong cave. The cave is easily accessed by boat as a river runs though it that flows into the lake itself so we were able to simply float in and make our way up the purpose built steps and along the man made path that snakes through the cave allowing you to take in the full magnitude of the cave and its impressive display of stalactites and stalagmites that adorn the cave. \n\n![IMGP0271.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQw1d2G3P11MxWxb11pfe22Fx97AC9fHe5RNRJxassPeW/IMGP0271.jpg)\nCave entrance\n\n![IMGP0303.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRVBQQb71wqatUtmDoHk7rx89f1mQ7ca2UHMRSyTNVs6G/IMGP0303.jpg)\nChau exploring\n\nAfter the caves we made our way back down the river to the Dau Dang water fall, this is actually a few waterfalls together which you'll get to after a short trek through the forest. its a relatively nice waterfall made better by the fact we were the only ones there at the time but to be honest isn't really worth spending more than a few minutes at. \n\n![IMGP0352.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmejACo4dDpXzm78dDv4SBgtJhSASzKPcMscMFJiCWHtzb/IMGP0352.jpg)\nDau Dang Waterfall\n\nOur third stop brought us to Fairy Pond, a small inland lake that I'm told is a beautiful blue during the dry season but as were here during the wet its more of a green but still not a bad place to visit, the pond has its share of traders here obviously in expectation of tourists but we seemed again to be alone here at this time. \n\n![IMGP0395.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUSVAjHUzdhbmWWrgFSKgS7PfBtz6Uv49k9cbmdNP6tiz/IMGP0395.jpg)\nFairy pond\n\nThe final stop on our journey brought us to a temple up on a hill which to be honest was a bit unimpressive, there was some small buildings and a shrine and a couple of dogs tied up barking their heads off at us so did'nt spend much time here. \n\nAfter that we headed back to shore and to our homestay to pack and prepare to return to Hanoi.       "body": "Hello steemians!\nApologies about the length between posts, had some technical issues with my laptop.\n\nMoving on from part 1 onto Fansipan the highest point in indochina, Fansipan can be done through a tour group or guide but Chau and i decided to do it ourselves as to be able to take our time and do it at our own pace. as we had a scooter this was made a bit easier as we simply drove to the gateway to fansipan. \nYou can get to the top two ways, by climbing (which will take you about two to three days) or by cable car. Needless to say we went with the cable car...\nAfter reaching the base of the mountain we passed through a small market area and food stalls to get to the ticketing office, tickets cost about 600,000 each. trust me it is worth every dong, the cable car ride is an experience in itself. \n\nAfter lining up for about 20 min we are directed onto the large cable car that will take us to the mountain and we're off! its over 6km to our destination so there is plenty of opportunity for happy snaps of the mountains and valleys below which are breathtaking! \n![L1010650.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeQ3PTvE11tvhSooQgU4qc6UeL949yVtup7bZZdBUnz3V/L1010650.jpg)\nView from the cable car\n\nThe ride up took us some time as we literarily came in through the clouds but we simply took the time to take photos and relax.\n\n![IMGP0151.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmX4RaVTpdajZChU4AiZKszMRHCoPmQbfJnEw35bWKuJ1J/IMGP0151.jpg)\nHeading into the clouds, view from the cable car\n\nAfter what felt like an age we had finally made it to our destination, after disembarking the cable car we are directed through a centre with cafes and shops, here we put on the cold weather gear we had brought with us, and good thing we did as it was freezing up there! i even donned my beanie. \n\n\n![L1010663.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYBm7anaiofGNGvmcgAnFi9v95HwT56M2dEKuDKCTEAPV/L1010663.jpg)\nTo make it to the very top we had to traverse a lot of staircases and past temples along the way. \n\nWe began to make our way up the staircase and quickly realised why there was signs telling you to take regular breaks, the air was noticeably thinner and we quickly felt exhausted after starting the climb as we would if we were down at sea level. this lesson quickly learnt we took our time. \n\n![L1010668.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmULYDv52AEw2xNcDK1B2p8QajrYFcp2FtzMPg439UP8J3/L1010668.jpg)\nMaking my way up the roof of indochina\n\nAfter what felt like an age we finally made it to the summit, but then again so did a lot of other people. It was quite crowded on the summit but still felt great about doing it, we stayed around long enough to admire the almost non existent view (due to the cloud cover, just had some bad luck with the weather) and took some happy snaps with the flags and summit markers that have been erected on top and we were straight back down the way we came again. \n\n![L1010687.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZwqwoeg9eiS7sfz2UdbybB941zUFZbKcs3GC1mapeJeM/L1010687.jpg)\nFlag and summit marker a top the mountain\n\nOnce back to the cable cars we made our way back down from the mountain and couldn't help notice a lot of the cable cars going up at this time (after midday) were quite empty, perhaps it was better to go in the afternoon. \n\nAgain back on solid ground at sea level we made our way back to Sapa town an onto the markets/shops that inhabit the street just right of the old french church. Here we found everything you could want and generally at cheaper prices than other areas which came at a surprise, and everything is always negotiable needless to say we ended up with a lot of scarfs, shoes, bags and clothing. As it is in a lot of marketing shopping areas in Vietnam North Face is everywhere and it can be hard to tell if its worth buying, to be honest i have purchased a lot of these products and so far they have stood up to all expectations, from bags to shoes and a few windbreakers I've been happy with the quality so far. in my opinion if you think about purchasing any of these products be sure to check the stitching and quality, theres always different levels of fakes!\n\nFinally after three days in Sapa it was time to head back to the big city of Hanoi, our return journey was again through Sapa express but this time we were to leave in the afternoon. \nWith he journey back happening during the day it gave us the opportunity to see more of the beautiful landscape and rice paddies scattered along the mountains, unfortunately my camera was packed away under the bus so was unable to photograph this only admire. \n\nThe Journey back to Hanoi is much the same as on the way about a four hour trip with a stop along the way for food and to stretch the legs. If your looking to save a bit on accommodation this is your best bet! After booking our tickets we were told to be at the office at 10:30pm for an 11:00pm departure, note that there is no seating reservation so you kind of just find a place that you like when you board. Once i boarded (after removing my shoes and placing them in a supplied plastic bag) i decided to go for the front and centre seat of the top bunk as id read on other threads that recommended staying towards the front of the bus to get more fresh air and be as far away from the on board toilet as possible (fair call).\nThe seats are like extra long bus seats that recline a lot further and are equipped with a small tray surface above you feet to strap your bag onto for the journey ahead, you are also supplied with a blanket (with Vietnam Airlines logo on them for some reason) and a bottle of water and some crackers for the journey. Before leaving the city however we had t stop for some more passengers, at this point there seemed to be a small issue though, it turns out that the bus had been overbooked by one person so were short one spot. This obviously caused some distress among the new arrivals as they did not want to travel separately as the guide said he could organise. Eventually a Vietnamese woman spoke up and said something that turned out to be her volunteering to sleep on the floor for the journey.....\nSo thats what happened she was given some extra blankets, refunded her ticket cost and set herself up on the floor, well it solved the issue and again we were on our way! Hooray! Many people on the bus seemed to put on their eye masks (recommended) straight away and nod off to sleep, i decided to stick it out until after our pit stop which happened about an hour and a half into the trip. The stop lasts about 20 min so plenty of time to grab a quick soup and brush my teeth before getting back onto the bus and crashing out for the journey. Vietnam has in the last few years put in a highway leading to Sapa which makes the journey pretty smooth allowing some zzz's. \nI managed to nod off for most of the journey and awoke when we pulled in at the Sapa Express office at Sapa, this was about 5am but was told that you can stay on the bus until 6am as everyone did. At 6am we were woken and welcomed to Sapa by our guide and assaulted by the cool air once the door was opened. (make sure you bring some warmer clothes as it does get cold up there) Upon disembarking the bus we were all met with lots of drivers and locals trying to get you to buy something from them or give you a lift somewhere, as the hotel we had booked was only 600 meters away Chau and i decided to walk so we could get a bit of a feel for the town. \n![Sleeper_bus_sapa1.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmR4YnxFvSrNtgYwM3zhZrPJ4FNVQGS5TY8UofDD6tRtHc/Sleeper_bus_sapa1.jpg)\nThe Sapa Express Overnight Sleeper bus\n\n**Sapa Town**\nWhen we arrived at our hotel our room wasn't ready (to be honest we weren't expecting to be) so the hotel said they could store our luggage for us great! We noticed they also did scooter hire so decided on this to explore the town. (Sapa can be walked easily enough but a scooter does give you a lot more freedom of movement and is really cheap!) This cost all of about $7.00 AUS for the day bargain! The traffic is also much lighter than in the cities making it easier to ride around without fearing for your life quite as much. Theres plenty to see in town such as the old French Church, the markets, Sapa museum and plenty of shops and cafes, though we decided to start at the famous Cat Cat village, a few k's from the town centre. \nIf you after food make sure the menu has prices on it before you order anything especially in the town centre, we went into a restaurant for lunch and the menus didn't have prices on it, should have walked out straight away but we were so hungry at the time it didn't seem to matter but were later charged twice what we would have expected to pay. Won't be making that mistake again... generally if you walk a few hundred metres from the town centre you'll find prices will be lower. \n\n**Cat Cat Village**\nThis village is a Hmong village that you must buy a ticket to enter but is really well worth it, especially if you want to se some great sights and the local Hmong villagers. Before entering the village we stopped at a shop to grab a bottle of water and were told we should buy some lollies for the children in the village, we figured why not so grabbed a bag each of hard lollies to hand out to the kids. After purchasing  ticket and having it checked at the entrance you make you way down some stairs past stalls and gift shops. After the hard selling of Hanoi it was a great relief to be able to check out these stores and wares without being stood over or having random items shoved in my face, the Hmong people here are really friendly and are happy for you to wander around their shops with no pressure. It was still early so there wasn't that many other tourists around yet which was great as it felt like you almost have the place to yourself and gives you the opportunity for some great photos. Theres plenty of kids around too who seemed to be accustomed to tourists giving them lollies as they all stick their hands out as you pass, it must be like halloween every day here!
