| title | The State of NAFTA in 2018 |
| body | As 2018 kicks off, the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement remains somewhat hazy. Certain indicators from Davos, and the most recent round of negotiations help us understand the position of negotiators, and whether or not the agreement is secure. NAFTA was heavily criticized by Donald Trump in 2016-17, and withdrawal has been touted frequently as a threat if the U.S.’s demands are not met. These threats have continued throughout negotiations, heading into 2018. While this is simply a threat and most know that the U.S. would prefer to maintain the agreement, the aggressive rhetoric puts Canada and Mexico in a difficult place going into negotiation. Trump has stressed that Canada and Mexico need NAFTA to survive, and that the U.S. will be mostly unaffected if the deal goes down in flames. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen, but continued threats to defect from NAFTA do not endear us to our allies, and will make them more likely to defect themselves. Despite heated rhetoric, situation presents an interesting opportunity to examine and reform the agreement, as all sides have parts they’d like to change. The U.S. has been most vocal about these changes. The administration has stressed the importance of digital goods and intellectual property laws, as well as reducing the U.S.’s trade deficit with Mexico. They also mention “eliminating non-tariff barriers” to U.S. goods in NAFTA countries. While this could mean a number of things, it is clear the U.S. intends to take a hard line backing U.S. exports, as well as protecting agriculture and manufacturing jobs in the U.S. In specific, the auto manufacturing industry is a target for “rules of origin” reforms. Robert Lighthizer has been negotiating hard for a requirement that 50% of automobile content be U.S. made, for automobiles to be sold without tariff. Mexico’s case is particularly interesting, as they’ve got an election coming up in 2018. It remains to be seen if Mexico will follow suit by electing a populist president into office. Mexico’s corn and soybean industries have taken a huge hit since the implementation of NAFTA, and their disgruntlement will be reflected in the polls now more than ever. NAFTA’s positive effects have primarily occurred in urban areas, especially those in Northern Mexico. Mexico’s goals for negotiation are similar to the U.S.’s, in that they want to include neglected regions in the success of globalization. Another large factor is Mexico’s dependence on exporting to the United States. 81% of Mexico’s total exports are sold to the U.S., and Mexico aims to diversify their trading partners over time. Donald Trump’s recent speech at Davos has signaled an easing of his once aggressively reclusive rhetoric. While still stressing an “America First” agenda, he pivoted to include the success of other nations in this process (a stark contrast to his tweets regarding Davos and its attendants). He expressed his openness to negotiating with TPP countries, as an attempt to retain an American trade presence in the region. While not explicitly saying he would re-enter TPP, he said he would “consider negotiating… perhaps as a group if it is in the interest of all” regarding countries in TPP. While this can be interpreted as more positive rhetoric on globalization, it is difficult to read, as it comes off the heels of a tariff on imported solar panels and washing machines. While the tariff was primarily placed to punish Chinese and South Korean manufacturers, it applies to all imports of this kind from any country. The one thing we can be certain of is that President Trump’s word is always changing, and entirely uncertain. Mexico can still glean that the U.S. will likely look to negotiate rather than withdraw, but the terms of which will still be harshly negotiated. Mexico’s Economy Minister, Ildefonso Guajardo, stated that Mexico is willing to stay at the table to find a solution. He also stated that North America would have tremendous difficulty if the agreement collapsed, and this is enough negative incentive to keep all parties at the table until a compromise is reached. For the time being, it appears as though the U.S. has adopted a more patient approach. It will likely take months before an agreement is reached, and we could see a variety of changes to NAFTA in order to keep all parties satisfied. When a decision is reached, expect a large reaction from markets. Uncertainty has plagued many sectors due to NAFTA’s hanging in the balance. |

Robert Lighthizer has been negotiating hard for a requirement that 50% of automobile content be U.S. made, for automobiles to be sold without tariff.\n\nMexico’s case is particularly interesting, as they’ve got an election coming up in 2018. 81% of Mexico’s total exports are sold to the U.S., and Mexico aims to diversify their trading partners over time.\n\nDonald Trump’s recent speech at Davos has signaled an easing of his once aggressively reclusive rhetoric. \n\nThe one thing we can be certain of is that President Trump’s word is always changing, and entirely uncertain. \n\nIt will likely take months before an agreement is reached, and we could see a variety of changes to NAFTA in order to keep all parties satisfied. When a decision is reached, expect a large reaction from markets. Uncertainty has plagued many sectors due to NAFTA’s hanging in the balance.",

| title | 4 Pitfalls for New Investors (and how to avoid them) |
| body | 1: Getting emotionally involved Most people quickly learn FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) or FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Despair) in their first few terms of trader lingo. It is one of the most widely discussed principles in investing, as well as in behavioral economics. When something we care about (like money) is at stake, we’re naturally inclined to avoid taking any losses, even if small. Even if trading at a small loss, is much better than a catastrophic one. However, when it comes time to sell, the new investor often has an optimistic view. Maybe they think there’s more upside than before. It may be down now, but it could double or triple by next year! This is how bagholders are made. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, a bagholder is someone stuck with a catastrophically devalued investment. The same goes for those who react with pessimism. Many people are struck with fear by standard market fluctuations, and sell at cyclical low points, that are bound to bounce. This is solved by taking emotion out of the equation, and relying on principle and objective standards to guide trades. Technical analysis is a great standard to judge an investment by. While fibonacci sequencing, and other forms of trend analysis are difficult to learn, you can start by simply looking at patterns in the markets. Charts and information are readily available online for most investments, whether it be real estate, stocks, cryptocurrency, commodities or futures. Many of these charts come with tools to help in finding fibonacci levels and averages etc. 2: Trying to “Follow a Formula” instead of having your own reads and ideas on markets Considering the strategies and ideas of other investors in a similar situation to your own to can be very helpful. Although, problems arise when one relies on them too heavily. You should always consider the source of the advice you’re receiving. What are the potential incentives, bits of information, confidences and fears that contributed to their idea? Do they align with the same standards you use? An important key to using advice properly is understanding the difference between technical and fundamental analysis. As stated before, technical analysis involves studying the patterns and sequences of the various price points in a market’s history, to help predict an accurate current valuation. Fundamental analysis predicts valuation based on merits, such as the people running a firm, its value proposition, or various other factors that spur future growth. A useful saying is that fundamental analysis is good for choosing what to buy, and technicals tell you when. Without solid fundamentals, you won’t be able to find credible investments that are worth your money. Meanwhile, technical analysis tells you the right time to purchase, as well as when to sell for acceptable profit, or take minimized losses. 3: Diversifying too much or too little Depending on the amount that you have to invest, you may need to allocate these amounts differently amongst your assets of choice. This is done for the reason of hedging against the risk of one particular investment failing. The hope is that with smart investments, your winners will compensate for the risks that don’t pan out. However, this doesn’t mean that the more diversified you are, the better your chances. If you split up your money too much, you miss out on the compounding effect that a big winner may have for you. In markets like cryptocurrency, there’s a very small selection of tokens that will provide consistent and reliable returns. Therefore diversifying often leads to a higher probability of more losers than winners. The same goes for markets such a real estate. Buying a wide variety of properties makes you vulnerable to a market crash, and more likely to receive a bad deal. You’re better off searching hard for a good deal on a single house, and putting more money into renovations to maximize the resale value. Look at your investments, and how much you have. Decide for yourself what the best way to hedge against risk is, given your amount of disposable income. 4: Comparing own success to others If you catch yourself looking at other successful traders, and wondering why you end up on the wrong end of the market’s movements, then it’s time to take a realistic look at your investments, and why you invest. It is all too easy to compare your situation to someone else’s, and try to recreate their success. If you’ve done this before, taking cues from Warren Buffet, or other large firms, you’ll realize it doesn’t work. Large firms and wealthy investors have the collateral to afford risks, and can be bailed out by just a few big wins in the markets. Hence, this influences the choices that they make. A trader who has a few thousand dollars he would like to invest wouldn’t benefit from these trades. Everyone has their own financial positions, limits and risk tolerance. Therefore everyone’s trading strategy should be personalized. Looking at how much you are putting in, when you are buying, and what merits your buys are based on is important to this personalization. |

| title | Pros and Cons of Social Media as a News outlet |
| body | Media as we know it is changing each and every day. As we all know, major news networks are losing viewership, as social media ramps up its growth in popularity. The internet’s ability to provide quick, widespread access to video and news stories is able to reach most people quicker. On top of that, people using social media for news have a more intimate connection to current events. This generation doesn’t want to hear somebody tell them about things after the fact, they want to see it, hear it and feel the high riding emotions for themselves as it unfolds. Stories leaked by real people, immediately as events take place convey a more genuine human response than a newscast can provide. Social media provides a medium for condolences and expressions of unity, that stimulate people’s desire for emotional gratification. This is the key factor in appealing to millennial audiences. This emerging form of news is prone to drawbacks stemming from this emotional involvement. People are much more easily swayed, and often don’t check the credibility of their sources amid the emotion. Confirmation bias is another key problem with news sourced from social media or sketchy online sources. People naturally tend to gravitate to ideas that validate what they believe. Online communities often become homogenous, with only like minded ideas being spread. Fringe ideas are often given unwarranted legitimacy through the use of these online communities. The more popular these ideas become online, the more visible they are to the general public, which inevitably allows it to influence their beliefs. Social media has great importance in exposing the severity of events as they occur. We have two glaring examples before us today: The Las Vegas shooting, and the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. In the case of Las Vegas, footage of the shooting was leaked as it occurred, displaying the panicked state. Most importantly, the sounds of the rifle, modified with a bump stock could be heard around the world. It serves as a horrifying reminder of the damage that this weapon can wreak. Puerto Rico’s desperate situation following the hurricane was quickly showed to the population. A quicker, more urgent response was necessary, and that need was conveyed first by social media. However, both situations reveal a darker side of using this media as your only means of information. It is almost impossible to be on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter without seeing some crackpot false flag theory behind the Las Vegas shooting. It is healthy and natural to question the motivations and evidence surrounding the attack, as much more explanation is needed for people to come to terms with this event. It is the exact opposite of healthy to spread theories that the U.S. government would massacre its own people for the sake of “disarming” the nation, as factual statements. This rhetoric does nothing to help the widening divide in our nation. It creates an even greater air of paranoia, fear and extremity that will slow our progress toward solving the problems of mental illness, violent culture and lack of gun control in the U.S. Puerto Rico’s case is different, in the sense that social media enjoys making any situation, whether foreign or domestic, about one thing only: Donald Trump. After every press conference, or action taken by the president, a slew of memes and supposed activists begin to flood social media, outraged and crying for change. Our focus should be solely on helping Puerto Rico recover from the damages dealt by Hurricane Maria. By obsessing over Trump’s actions, social media is only drawing attention away from the actual problem. On social media, anti-Trump rhetoric has become the easiest alternative for an “activist” too lazy to actually search for a solution, or contribute to relief efforts. |

| title | How Ego influences Rhetoric, and worsens negotiations: |
| body | Recently, alot of talk has gone on about North Korea’s development of nuclear capabilities. Threats back and forth between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un brought the situation to center stage. It’s become more of a spectacle of which leader holds more power, instead of being a productive negotiation that will hopefully lead to a solution. Ego very easily integrates itself into the positions and rhetoric of each side of this conflict. While both countries figureheads are very different, they both have built their leadership upon a cult of personality. Therefore, ego is inherently ingrained to every position that they convey to the public. Trump’s image among his following as a supreme dealmaker, and negotiator is at stake when Kim makes threats regarding nuclear capability. On the other hand, Kim cannot let himself be belittled in front of his people, who regard him as a supreme leader. The overwhelming strength of these two egos leaves no room for negotiation. Given the heightened frequency of missile tests, the time frame for a peaceful negotiation would be nonexistent either way. This is the time in which a calm, collected leader would prove indispensable for the U.S. However, we run great risk dealing with North Korea, as Trump has continued to escalate tensions with his rhetoric on Twitter, and in his speeches. What we as citizens have to understand, is that this rhetoric does nothing to benefit our cause. It’s easy to talk tough on Twitter, and claim to take a hardline stance on North Korea. Regardless of what our President says, it is our military, and intelligence agencies that are putting in the research and groundwork to find a solution. Name calling, and trading threats with Kim ascribes more legitimacy to the threat than need be and instills widespread fear of nuclear action. Goading a quicker and more aggressive response will only shrink the timeframe we have to disarm Kim, and increase the potential for loss of life. The strength of rhetoric is greatly undervalued by our president, and is used wantonly through Twitter. Forceful words have their place, especially when dealing with irrational actors like North Korea, but are not effective when conveyed through a medium like Twitter. North Korea is a frustrating actor to deal with in international politics. However, the last thing we need, is to let their lack of cooperation affect our relationship with our allies. What Trump has failed to realize in the realm of international relations, is that codependency between us and our allies is our greatest tool against North Korea. Instead, harsh rhetoric has made us appear irrational, hotheaded, and overall more like North Korea to our allies. |
