titleAI "DeepFakes": A Dangerous New Spin on Video Marketing
bodyThere is a lot of buzz going on right now around the web showing examples of AI-generated videos called "DeepFakes" and the potential implications of this technology is mind-blowing. If you haven't seen these videos (here is a link to a website that specializes in showcasing the creations WARNING: these videos contain nudity and is NSFW), they are made using the a celebrity's image, and superimposed onto another video, often x-rated. But, x-rated content isn't the only use for this technology. A very convincing video showing Obama giving a speech shows the inevitability for this technology to creep into the political and business sectors, as well. The biggest problem is these "DeepFakes" appear very, very real and are getting better every day. What does this mean for your marketing efforts? Well, since this is still a new field and largely unregulated, it can have either a positive or a negative impact on marketers. Positive Could lead to innovative video marketing techniques May potentially lead to access to new content genres Easier to make entertaining content that will keep your audience engaged Has already started to add new jobs to the labor market, both in content creation and legal issues Potential for use in therapy, like coping with the loss of a loved one Negative It's easier for competitors to create false and misleading content which can hurt your company's reputation and lead to legal battles to defend yourself Could lead to legal battles in other ways such as copyright infringement, slander and more Using "DeepFakes" may lead to losing the trust of your customers, partners and vendors Some social media sites are already beginning to ban the use of these videos, but it doesn't mean they can catch every single one Whether you decide this is something that can be used as a force of good or as a force of evil in marketing endeavors, one things is for sure: The battle over the use of this technology is only just beginning. We are sure to see some interesting ramifications and innovations surface in the coming years. Here's a list of thought-provoking TED Talks to help you decipher your own emotions, and gain insight into why you feel the way you do. [John Koenig: Beautiful new words to describe obscure emotions](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esD6aaIjhek) John Koenig, the author of "The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows", explores his mission of finding the missing links in the language of feelings and making up words to describe complex emotions. For example, "sonder" is one of Koenig's made-up words, which he defines as the realization that each random person you encounter has a life as vivid and complex as your own. We define words, and they define us. So, what happens when we discover just how much those made-up words affect our thoughts and emotions? [Lisa Feldman Barrett: You aren't at the mercy of your emotions – your brain creates them](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gks6ceq4eQ) Is your brain just "guessing" which emotion to display outwardly during any given situation? It is established that the brain will always try to find a "shortcut" to stored information. It stands to reason that emotional impulses would be no different. Lisa Feldman Barrett uses surprising examples in this light-hearted and thoroughly fascinating trip through your brain's process for constructing your emotional response to the world around us. [Alan Watkins: Why you feel what you feel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-rRgpPbR5w) Alan Watkins poses the question: If you could teach yourself, your children, or anybody one thing, what would that one thing be? Follow Alan through the stages of emotional development throughout your life, from birth to adulthood. Splashed with plenty of lively humor, this entertaining presentation is bound to get you thinking about why this one thing is so very important to understanding the "energy in motion" that is "e-motion". [Dawn Goldworm: How to control emotion and influence behavior](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOQcSzkKfbs) Can a smell help you control your own emotions, and influence the behavior of others? How and when does our sense of smell begin to affect our entire being? And, to what depth can a scent illicit an emotional reaction? Using real-life examples, Dawn Goldworm explains the significant impact scent has on our lives, not only on the conscious level, but the subconscious, as well. [Alison Bacon: The light and dark of emotional intelligence](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqPJKtFI42U) Fight, Flight or Freeze? When an emotional trigger is staring you down, do you know how to overcome your instinctual reactions and make your emotions to work for you, instead of against you? Alison Bacon reminds us of the positive effects that cultivating a strong emotional intelligence can have on your mind, body, and spirit.

titleWould Artificial Intelligence by any other name, smell as sweet?: Terms you should know
bodyThere are a lot of new terms buzzing around the topic of AI. Each one may take on a specific meaning with subtle differences or describe the research or specific type of AI, but nevertheless are covered under the umbrella term of AI or Artificial Intelligence. Not only are there different levels of awareness or abilities: **Type I: Reactive Machines**- As the name states, they are "reactive" only. They have no ability to form memories or make informed decisions. **Type II: Limited Memory**- These intelligent machines are able to form "limited memories". Think of an automated vehicle needing to observe and remember the behavior of vehicles around it. **Type III: Theory of Mind**- These machines will be able to form understandings of the world around them, such as other machines, objects, animals and humans. **Type IV: Self-Aware**- In order for this stage of machine learning to come to fruition, humans would actually need to understand consciousness in sentient beings. This is obviously a long way down the road since we are only beginning to really study the functions of the brain in-depth. Ok, we now understand the different types of AI and we can safely say we are getting more comfortable with Types I & II. But, Types III & IV are still in the works and will be for quite some time. As the industry grows, there is no doubt that new categories and sub-categories will emerge. So, let's explore a few terms used to describe AI that you may come across while you're surfing the neural network innovation ocean (I am sure I have missed quite a few, though!): **Thinking Computer/Computational Thinking** - The thought processes (comprising of 4 processes: decomposition, pattern recognition, pattern generalization and abstraction, and algorithm design) involved in formulating a problem and figuring out the solution. **Neural Network** - An interconnected group of nodes, similar to the connections of neurons in the brain. **Machine Learning** - Uses statistics to teach a program how to "learn" from data, without having the solutions explicitly programmed into the system. **Deep Learning / Deep Structured Learning / Hierarchical Learning / Deep Neural Learning / Deep Neural Network** - General term used to describe machine learning of unstructured data, as opposed to task-specific algorithms. **Intelligent Retrieval** - Describes the process of pulling information stored in a database. **Electronic Brain / Artificial Brain / Artificial Mind** - The software and hardware components that make up an AI network. **Cybernetics** - The study of the structures that relate to communications and automatic control systems, both in machines and living organisms. **Strong AI** - Used to describe the goal of getting AI to be as intelligent as a human. **Autonetics** - Deals with the development and use of machines for automated control and guidance of devices. **Natural Language Processing (NLP) / Natural Language Learning (NLL) / Natural Language Interpretation (NLI)** - All of these terms deal with how machines learn to interact with us using natural human languages. **Affective Computing / Artificial Emotional Intelligence (Emotion AI)** - This describes how machines can learn from and interact with human emotions. **Expert Systems / Cognitive Expert Advisor / Cognitive Computing** - AI-based systems with expert knowledge that can perform tasks such as medical diagnosis or stock trading. Operates primarily on "If-Then" algorithms. **Virtual Personal Assistant / Digital Assistant** - Although this can refer to a human working remotely as a personal assistant, for the purposes of this article, think more along the lines of Alexa and Google Home. **Knowledge Engineering / Knowledge-Based Systems** - A knowledge engineer is responsible for building the framework for knowledge-based systems. **Synthetic Intelligence / Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) / General Purpose Machine Intelligence** - A general term to describe AI, but places a heavier emphasis on the AI not actually being "artificial", an honestly true and pure form of intelligence. **Weak/Narrow AI** - AI built to focus on one specific, narrow area. Does not demonstrate broad knowledge into other areas. **Super Intelligence** - Refers to AI that has intelligence that is far superior to humans. This is often the basis of many dystopian future sci-fi stories, where AI enslaves humanity. **Technological Singularity** - The proverbial point in AI development where AI will "explode" and accelerate technological advancement that will dramatically change the way humans live. **Artificial / Machine / Synthetic Consciousness** - Another way of saying Artificial Intelligence. **Brain-Machine Interface (BMI)/ Brain-Computer Interface (BCI)/ Mind-Machine Interface (MMI)/ Direct-Neural Interface (DNI)/ Neural-Control Interface (NCI)** - Not to be confused with AI terminology. These terms refer to machines that are directly interacting with a living brain, and receiving input from the brain (human or animal). I only added them to highlight the distinction.

titleAI & Nanobots in Medicine: Will You Drink the Nano-Koolaid?
body![download.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZbboJ6B3RR8R3wnWV6xWMLo53sdTorLDnD5gzgURVTe1/download.jpg) Running through the Dummies list of the different types of nanobots that are being developed sends me down a thrilling road of wonder. What types of jobs can we have these bots take over for our bodies? * Microbivore: Mimic white blood cells * Respirocytes: Mimic red blood cells * Clottocytes: Mimic blood platelets * Cellular repair bots: Mimic surgical scalpels on a cellular level * Medicine delivery bots: Target specific areas and attach themselves Imagine combining all of those together, in a symbiotic symphony of regeneration throughout the entire body. This perfect little colony controlled by artificial intelligence and organized as a hive. It's been proposed before and we have recently taken quite a few leaps of progress. Scientists were able to deliver a concentrated and targeted dose of antibiotics to treat ulcers in a rat, without the negative side effects that normally come with the use of antibiotics. The bots were made of a magnesium core, wrapped in layer of antibiotics and then wrapped in an adhesive polymer that helped the bot stick to the affected area. That's not the only recent breakthrough in the method of release. Another experiment involved the use of a cockroach who had the pleasure of being the recipient of a modified DNA bot containing a drug that was held in place until called upon by an electromagnetic "gate". The gate was opened by a thought generated by a human subject wearing an EEG headset. Ponder for a moment what that may mean. A simple thought could lead to a bot releasing medicine when needed. It's not too far-fetched to think that one day very soon, there may be a nanobot that is pressure-sensitive that can administer Albuterol when they sense the airways constricting. No longer would a patient need to carry around or worry about losing an inhaler. Or, perhaps a micro dose of a psychoactive drug delivered directly to an area of the brain of a patient that suffers from a mental disorder. So, let's say we all opt-in for this army of bots to cure all of our ailments in real-time. How can we possibly power this army? After all, it's not like they would need a lot of energy, right? A few solutions that have been proposed: * Nuclear power * Biological bots that eat tissue * Chemical reactions with bloodstream * Thermal energy from body heat * Electromagnetic fields In effect, this could have the potential of making us immortal. And we often see a very bleak outlook portrayed in media when we think of humans becoming immortal. But, what the creators of these dystopian futures fail to consider is the idea that with this amount of freedom, humans would no longer need to fight over many of the resources we currently fight over. How about if you could no longer drown? would you decide to pack up and move to a house underwater? Perhaps a nice, peaceful lake or right off a sunny, warm beach build a cabana in the ocean. Consider being free from having to eat as bots would deliver nutrients directly to your cells. All you must do to survive is eat a spoonful of bots every day. Is it really that impossible to imagine? I believe the potential positive implications of this technology will eventually far outweigh the negative. Yes, there is always the potential for abuse if the AI controlled hive is vulnerable to hacking or under the control of a corrupt government. So, it is more important than ever before for people to really sit up and take notice of these advancements. It's great to share a cool video on social media, but more action is required to make sure we keep this technology being used for the betterment of humanity, and not against it. **Will you drink the nano-koolaid?** ![170301-N-TB037-003.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmW11jtouagufxBUrXRy4dZwJWL1UfKVfvNeRe5NdvvT8U/170301-N-TB037-003.JPG)

But, what the creators of these dystopian futures fail to consider is the idea that with this amount of freedom, humans would no longer need to fight over many of the resources we currently fight over.\n\nHow about if you could no longer drown? would you decide to pack up and move to a house underwater? Perhaps a nice, peaceful lake or right off a sunny, warm beach build a cabana in the ocean. Consider being free from having to eat as bots would deliver nutrients directly to your cells. All you must do to survive is eat a spoonful of bots every day. Is it really that impossible to imagine?\n\nI believe the potential positive implications of this technology will eventually far outweigh the negative. \n\n**Will you drink the nano-koolaid?**\n\n![170301-N-TB037-003.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmW11jtouagufxBUrXRy4dZwJWL1UfKVfvNeRe5NdvvT8U/170301-N-TB037-003.JPG)",

titleEU can't seem to figure out how to deal with AI & privacy issues
bodyBack in [2012](http://ec.europa.eu/justice/data-protection/document/review2012/com_2012_11_en.pdf), the EU began drafting regulations with regard to the use of private information for its citizens by corporations. But, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has one big problem: they didn't really have the foresight to address the issue of how companies use algorithms to process personal information into deep learning. So, these already antiquated regulations have left some wondering if the EU has set the stage to ban the use of AI as it is currently utilized. There have been some suggestions on how to alter the algorithms to "forget" personally identifiable information to be compliant with GDPR, but that may be jumping the gun a little bit, as all of the suggestions will involve substantial time, effort and incur costs. In [2016](https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201617/cmselect/cmsctech/145/14506.htm), though, it was concluded by the that "While it is too soon to set down sector-wide regulations for this nascent field, it is vital that careful scrutiny of the ethical, legal and societal dimensions of artificially intelligent systems begins now. Not only would this help to ensure that the UK remains focused on developing 'socially beneficial' AI systems, it would also represent an important step towards fostering public dialogue about, and trust in, such systems over time." Additionally, the committee recommended that a "Commission on Artificial Intelligence" be established and that the commission be based at the Alan Turing Institute. So, while there are some glaringly obvious contradictions in terms of the official stance of the EU government of using personal data in AI learning, it doesn't seem like there should be cause for alarm just yet. Compliance with the GDPR is on the mind of every business in the EU and member states that are affected by these regulations (since the deadline for complete compliance is in just a few weeks), but it doesn't necessarily mean that the EU is going to stifle the development of AI applications in corporate environments.

titleDigital Data on DNA: Could it be the answer to building "perfect humans"? And, would that make us cyborgs or something else?
bodyBack in 2012, [Harvard scientists](http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2012/08/dna-ultimate-hard-drive) "broke" the DNA code that allowed them to store an immense amount of data (such as [movies](https://phys.org/news/2016-04-technicolor-hollywood-history-bottle.html)) on non-biological DNA. "Non-biological" is the key term in that sentence. This process can store data that amounts to an unfathomable amount known as an ["exabyte"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exabyte) (1 billion gigabytes). While there is not a whole lot of information out yet as to what the price tag looks like to use DNA for data storage on a massive scale, I would imagine it would be less than the cost of storing a Yottabyte's worth of information on traditional hard drives. In order to do that, one would need [a data center this size of Delaware and Rhode Island at the cost of nearly $100 TRILLION](https://gizmodo.com/5557676/how-much-money-would-a-yottabyte-hard-drive-cost). So, it stands to reason that with the amount of digital data humans are creating, we MUST move away from magnetic storage. It is neither economically feasible nor practical to consume precious resources required to store that much data when DNA can store [107 times the amount of magnetic tape](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/publication/scaling-dna-data-storage-random-access-retrieval/). ![Photo Source: Gizmodo](https://www.newworldoptimist.com/uploads/1/0/3/3/103379658/18mseohcu58xcjpg_orig.jpg) So, it is right here that we begin to understand the need for [DNA storage as a solution](https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/231343-how-dna-data-storage-works-as-scientists-create-the-first-dna-ram). It's a remarkable breakthrough. But (aside from the ability to store information like movies, music, documents, etc.) what will happen when we figure out how to store data on DNA that would allow humans to be born with information that is almost ["instinctual"](https://www.quora.com/Are-instincts-actually-encoded-in-DNA-If-so-how-is-that-possible)? Would we be able to encode information - for example, encode the concepts of difficult equations and complex scientific studies - that all future generations are born with as an instinct? And, by [integrating this digital data with biological DNA](https://royaljay.com/healthcare/smart-methods-store-data-human-body/), would that make us cyborgs without the use of any "hardware" additions that we often think about when visualizing a futuristic cyborg? Or, I suppose this technology could potentially go the other way, where - instead of encoding digital data onto biological data - scientists are able to begin [converting digital data into biological data](https://www.zdnet.com/article/from-digital-to-biological-why-the-future-of-storage-is-all-about-dna/). This could be achieved once we completely understand the entirety of the "language" of DNA. Imagine the implications of a [fully-organic computer empowered with AI](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wetware_computer). In essence, we will have created a humanoid creature that far surpasses the intelligence and capabilities of current humans. Would those creatures even be able to be considered "human" anymore? Technically, no. Not as we currently define what it is to be "human". If that is the case, we are essentially ENSURING the extinction of modern humans. But, it could also be argued that we have simply found a way to speed up evolution. Perhaps the Earth could only take us so far in our evolution, and it will always be inevitable that we will find ways to adapt and transform this collective intelligence we share to allow ourselves to move anywhere in the Universe (or multi-verse, for that matter). It is at this point that we begin to go down a very deep rabbit-hole into considerations on philosophy, physics, religion, morality and a whole lot more. Those discussions are probaby best saved for other posts. In conclusion, the ability to use synthetic DNA to store data is already becoming mainstream with companies like [Microsoft](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/project/dna-storage/) already jumping into the field of research and utilization. The process still requires very laborous [computational processes to retrieve the data](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/publication/clustering-billions-of-reads-for-dna-data-storage/). But, it is highly probable that any or all of the possibilities mentioned here will become a reallity, and sooner than we may think. It is a beast that has already been unleashed. And, the more people know about these innovations, the better we are equipped to understand and, where necessary, keep a reign on potential unintended consequences. It is encouraging to know that we are not destined to "die out" (barring any major cataclysmic event that wipes us out soon) never fully understanding the beauty and intricate details that went into forming "human beings".

titleThought the bank "bail-OUT" scheme was bad? What about the "bail-IN" scheme?
bodySince the "Crash of 2008" and subsequent recession, it seems as though many more people are joining in the idea of moving towards a money-free world. For those of us that support that concept, it is a dream we are actively working towards achieving. But, very soon we may get exactly what we asked for, and in a not-so-nice way. See, back in 2014 during the G20 in Brisbane, there was a wheel set in motion that allows banks to invoke what is being called a ["Bail-in"](https://www.bloomberg.com/quicktake/bail-in). If you haven't heard of it, you should be concerned. Perhaps most concerning for those in the United States is that there are whispers and shouts of another [recession just around the corner](https://www.nasdaq.com/article/jp-morgan-warns-of-looming-recession-cm863446). If it is anything like the one in 2008, we are bound to see more ugliness go down in the financial sector. Do you recall much about the economic problems in Europe back in 2017? The prophesized economic crisis unfolded right in front of our eyes as we [watched senior shareholders escape](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-06-26/italy-s-double-bank-burial-strains-rules-by-tapping-taxpayers) bearing the burden of failed banks, at the cost of the government. And, it wasn't without consequences, as Bloomberg reported: >The theory appeared to work when Spain’s fourth-biggest lender, Banco Popular Espanol SA, was [forcibly sold](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-06-07/banco-popular-taken-over-by-santander-after-eu-sees-failure) to a bigger competitor in June 2017, wiping out shareholders and about 2 billion euros ($2.3 billion) owed to bondholders. It was [heralded as a victory](https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-06-08/europe-s-handling-of-banco-popular-is-a-good-model) for European Union regulators, since no taxpayer funds were used. But investors are suing, saying the deal was arbitrary and could have been avoided. ~ [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/quicktake/bail-in) So, what happens if that scenario comes into play in the USA? Especially with Trump as President.... Most of us know how he feels about [Dodd-Frank](http://thehill.com/policy/finance/381851-trump-dodd-frank-rollback-should-be-done-fairly-quickly) which will likely soon be completely rolled-back. And, when it is gone, many of the lending restrictions currently imposed on banks will disappear and we will be heading right back towards the [cliff of economic disaster](https://weissratings.com/articles/The-Next-Time-Banks-Hit-a-Wall-Will-Government-Respond-with-Bail-Outs-or-Bail-Ins). [Depositors & pensioners](https://www.huffingtonpost.com/ellen-brown/new-g20-bailin-rules-now-_b_6244394.html), beware! As one [HuffPost article](https://www.huffingtonpost.com/ellen-brown/new-g20-bailin-rules-now-_b_6244394.html) states: > • What was formerly called a “bankruptcy” is now a “resolution proceeding.” The bank’s insolvency is “resolved” by the neat trick of turning its liabilities into capital. Insolvent TBTF banks are to be “promptly recapitalized” with their “unsecured debt” so that they can go on with business as usual. > • [“Unsecured debt” includes deposits](http://www.economist.com/node/21559344), the largest class of unsecured debt of any bank. The insolvent bank is to be made solvent by turning our money into their equity - bank stock that could become worthless on the market or be tied up for years in resolution proceedings. So, are you going to get caught holding the bag when (not "if") the next recession hits? The time to begin preparing for this is now! One thing that really got my curiosity alarms ringing recently was the fact that [George Soros](https://www.georgesoros.com/) announced his fund management firm would begin [trading Cryptocurrency](https://cointelegraph.com/news/soros-fund-management-plans-to-launch-cryptocurrency-trading-report-says). A quick Google search about his effect on economies around the world reveals headlines such as ["Here's how George Soros broke the Bank of Thailand"](http://www.businessinsider.com/how-george-soros-broke-the-bank-of-thailand-2016-9), ["The Trade of the Century: When George Soros Broke the British Pound"](https://priceonomics.com/the-trade-of-the-century-when-george-soros-broke/), ["Soros: Republic Enemy #1"](https://canadafreepress.com/article/soros-republic-enemy-1) and ["Soros enjoys taking countries down"](http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/47910/). Well. That is thought provoking indeed. We are left to ponder if his move has the intent of "taking down" cryptocurrency, or if it is because he knows the US dollar is going to tank soon, along with banks and he is safe-guarding himself from the coming firestorm. After all, his signature move in crashing the British Pound was by making a huge bet AGAINST the currency. And, in one day he added a billion dollars to his wealth. So, what comes next? Will we soon see the day where our bank accounts are wiped clean to prevent a bank's failure? A day when cryptocurrency becomes the greatest hedge against financial ruin? It seems to be more of a probability than just a possibility. So, how do we prepare the masses for such an event? It would be wise for people to take this scenario into consideration when deciding their long-term financial goals and career paths, especially the younger generation.

titleYou may soon be eating electronics in your food.... For your health, of course!
bodyThe first image that popped into my head when I heard about edible electronics was something along the lines of: https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/660/1*dD4r-0Tfr088MneYBqpnXQ.png "Absurd" was my next thought. But, I don't think I am alone on this initial thought. In reality though, the real concept of edible elctronics is (obviously) nothing like this. In an article published by the MIT Technology Review introduces us to electronic tattoos on food. > The development of organic circuits that can be transferred onto food and pills paves the way for a new era of biomonitoring. ~ MIT Tech Review In the article, the author compares the concept to the temporary tattoos we used to get from bubble gum wrappers when we were kids. Ok, that nostalgic analogy is sweet, but I wanted to really understand HOW this is going to work before I eat something with a little electronic tattoo on it. Who is Giorgio Bonacchini at the Instituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genoa, Italy? Well, this PhD candidate's profile on the IIT website says "His research work focuses on the investigation of the electronic transport properties of exotic materials for organic bioelectronics, in particular on the production and design of edible electronic devices." I tried to understand his recent paper on his research entitled "Water-Gated n-Type Organic Field-Effect Transistors for Complementary Integrated Circuits Operating in an Aqueous Environment". Most of it is so far above my head, but if you're fluent in the lingo, you may find it quite interesting! As for me, I just want the gist of it all. It helps to understand that this concept is just a shrunken, more versatile version of the "camera pills" that have been around for years now. Two problems with the current technology are the fact that they are costly and don't allow for a lot of versatility. ![Photo Source: MIT Tech Review](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/660/0*GuidcedxQc3prJbl.png) By using an ink-jet printer they can create nanoparticle-layered circuits made of silver printed directly onto the transfer paper, but this technique isn't without it's mystery as to the ability of the circuits being biocompatible. Through some trials and errors, they did find a way to make the semiconductors more stable and resistant to environmental threats, but at the cost of the transferability of the device. The team admits they have a long way to go in perfecting the technique, and the prospect of an edible battery is probably a concept that is a little hard to swallow for most..... but it may not be very long before you look at that new prescription bottle with a label warning you about the bioreactive "super pills" inside.

titleBe careful calling the Permanent Fund Dividend “Socialism” in front of an Alaskan!
body![Alt Text](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/660/1*Z6RE9yWLc68-rbkXJ5uPhg.jpeg) People in the “Lower 48 (or 49)” who have never lived in Alaska are unde the impression that Alaskans get “free money” just for living here. And, they are right! But, don’t ever say that in front of most Alaskans. You will be called all sorts of names! So, if you can’t call it “free money” what would you call it? First, let’s explore what the Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) is: According to Wikipedia, a brief overview of it says: The Alaska Permanent Fund is a constitutionally established permanent fund managed by a state-owned corporation, the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation (APFC)…. Shortly after the oil from Alaska’s North Slope began flowing to market through the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, the Permanent Fund was created by an amendment to the Alaska Constitution. It was designed to be an investment where at least 25% of the oil money would be put into a dedicated fund for future generations, who would no longer have oil as a resource…. The Corporation is to manage for maximum prudent return, and not — as some Alaskans at first wanted — as a development bank for in-state projects. The Fund grew from an initial investment of $734,000 in 1977 to approximately $53.7 billion as of July 9, 2015. So, as it states, the PFD was essentially a way of “buying out” all present and future Alaskan land owner rights to oil found in the state. That also means that EVERY eligible Alaskan receives this payment every year, whether they own land or not. The payment amount has ranged from around $330 to as much as $3,200 (with a special payment added thanks to Sarah Palin). This sounds like a socialist benefit to me. Of course, I support it 100%!! But, when I posted on Facebook stating that the PFD was a socialist benefit, you can imagine the types of responses I received from the people of a REALLY Red State. It is interesting the differing opinions that surfaced. More responses on my [Blog Post](https://www.newworldoptimist.com/governance/alaskans-be-careful-calling-a-socialist-benefit-socialism-in-front-of-an-alaskan) https://www.newworldoptimist.com/uploads/1/0/3/3/103379658/pfd11_orig.png https://www.newworldoptimist.com/uploads/1/0/3/3/103379658/pfd12_orig.png https://www.newworldoptimist.com/uploads/1/0/3/3/103379658/pfd14_orig.png https://www.newworldoptimist.com/uploads/1/0/3/3/103379658/pfd15_orig.png https://www.newworldoptimist.com/uploads/1/0/3/3/103379658/pfd16_orig.png In another question I posed to this group - with regard to an investment made by the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation in an out-of-state seed company - I asked if they would have rather seen the money spent: - On a higher PFD that year - Local, year-round farms as an investment in the future - The investment in the seed company https://www.newworldoptimist.com/uploads/1/0/3/3/103379658/fbxpoll_orig.png Even though there were only a few responses, you can see there is a close divide between investing that $100m in a cash payout to the people and improving food security for Alaskans. Now, consider this: In 2016, the PFD total payment to the people was $651,529,880.18. So, if there was an extra $100m added to that, the max benefit for each person who received a PFD that year would have been about $156. Believe me, that is chump change up here. BUT, if the corporation had invested in the local farms for year-round production, the amount saved by Alaskans on fresh produce at the store and create an surplus supply that could have been EXPORTED from the state. Exports are something this state severely lacks. I could not find details of the investment with the seed company that the money actually went to. So, I can not speak to the matter of whether or not the investment in the out-of-state seed engineering company is a more sound financial move for the state's economy. But, I can assure you that the trickle-down effect of spending $100m to create indoor farms will increase the state's prosperity both directly and indirectly. From savings on healthcare costs due to better access to fresh food all the way to the aforementioned export potential, it should be the next diversification move the state makes. And, the SOONER, the BETTER!

titleNo HAL9000 here.... yet!
body"I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do." ~ HAL 9000 Ok, this post isn't about the idea of the AI that controls a living environment running amuck. It is more about the implications of automation of home tasks. An entirely automated home is fast becoming a reality and, to this humble dreamer, it is such an exciting time to witness! From vacuums, to doorbells, to machines that automatically wash, dry, fold or hang your clothes (I REALLY need those machines), iron your clothes, monitors your utility consumption, or lets you control clocks, lights, doors, blinds, appliances, and pretty much EVERYTHING else you can possibly think of in your home. Of course, at this time, the technology is really only available to those with a decent amount of disposable income, but as with all technology, the prices will eventually come down to allow for us plebs to afford and enjoy an automated home. Many people fear the technological takeover, but this is one area that I feel that advances in technology are fairly benign when it comes to the issue of the eradication of human jobs. Now, of course, it will displace and severely reduce the need for housekeepers, gardeners and the like in the long-term. But, in the short-term, the high cost restrictions for most people and because these concepts are still in the development and testing phases, we shouldn't be worried that all of the small/medium/large businesses will crash overnight. However, this area is still in jeopardy. So, what would displaced workers turn to for work? Well, I imagine they would need to begin focusing now on how to rise above the situaton and step up occupations, or they will be forced to side-step into different occupations as technology encroaches on their current territories. However, this side-stepping may ultimately require the need to move to other less-developed countries who will not have access to these technologies for quite some time. If this is the case, immigration policies will have to be changed in order to list these occupations as acceptable occupations for work visas. What do you think? How can we help these workers transition as technology displaces them? https://www.newworldoptimist.com/city--home-design/no-hal9000-here-yet

From vacuums, to doorbells, to machines that automatically wash, dry, fold or hang your clothes (I REALLY need those machines), iron your clothes, monitors your utility\nconsumption, or lets you control clocks, lights, doors, blinds, appliances, and pretty much EVERYTHING else you can possibly think of in your home. Of course, at this time, the technology is really only available to those with a decent amount of disposable income, but as with all technology, the prices will eventually come down to allow for us plebs to afford and enjoy an automated home. \n\nMany people fear the technological takeover, but this is one area that I feel that advances in technology are fairly benign when it comes to the issue of the eradication of human jobs. Now, of course, it will displace and severely reduce the need for housekeepers, gardeners and the like in the long-term. But, in the short-term, the high cost restrictions for most people and because these concepts are still in the development and testing phases, we shouldn't be worried that all of the small/medium/large businesses will crash overnight.\n\nHowever, this area is still in jeopardy. If this is the case, immigration policies will have to be changed in order to list these occupations as acceptable occupations for work visas.\nWhat do you think? How can we help these workers transition as technology displaces them? \n\nhttps://www.newworldoptimist.com/city--home-design/no-hal9000-here-yet",

titleBlockchain + Biometrics + RFID for protection against identity-theft?
bodyWhat if you could make your identity almost completely unhackable? Given the latest debacles in security by major corporations that allowed your sensitive information to be breached, the question of identity security has really been on the forefront of everyone's minds (not that it wasn't before). So, in consideration of the current identity protection measures Americans (and other nations) have in place, it seems that they are obviously antiquated in today's technological environment. I began wondering how to combine technologies in order to make one's identity almost unhackable. Since we have the infant technology already at our disposal, perhaps instead of focusing on one solution, we could combine them to make it as strong as possible. And, THAT is where I think combining biometrics, RFID and blockchain technologies could really "lay the smack down" on criminals looking to steal your identity. Each tech, when used as a stand-alone has it's vulnerabilities: RFID chips can be hacked and cloned, among other issues Biometrics can be tricked in some sophisticated ways Blockchain, if not decentralized, can be at risk of attack and theft just as any database currently is. So, combine all three! A chip in the hand, that is scanned by a reader that reads the biometrics at the same time (makes cloning a chip pointless unless the thief can also duplicate the victim's palm pattern, and at the same time makes trying to fake a pattern pointless unless the thief can read the chip) There are some companies out there who are combining RFID-Blockchain and Biometrics-Blockchain, this is true. However, I am a person who thinks in terms of efficiency. And, I love to ponder how to combine things to make them much more useful. But, I am no expert when it comes to these technologies. So, those of you who are involved in these technologies, let me know why this idea could or couldn't work!
