| title | Switch on for Xbox |
| body | Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced at GDC that Cuphead was coming to switch, this represents the first time a Microsoft owned property is going multi-platform (ignoring Minecraft due to the fact it was on everything before their acquisition). This is big news and gives us some insight into what Xbox Live on Switch means. Going forward it isn’t hard to imagine a world where the likes of Halo or Gears are on other platforms. Microsoft took some lumps this generation with muddled messaging in the beginning and a lack of exclusives. However, where they stood out was their push toward a “gamers first” mentality with services like GamePass, backward compatibility, cross-play, and a partnership with Nintendo. Now after the Cuphead announcement it’s clear that Xbox has ambitious plans. With Project Scarlet, their rent to own system, and Xbox Live on Switch they have a vision of the future and it would seem they plan to launch that future this E3. They haven’t said what that future is, but it looks like they plan to attack all fronts, streaming with Scarlet, a new Xbox console, and branching out to other platforms like Switch. With Microsoft covering basically every base they have a good shot at reclaiming their top spot and their Cuphead on Switch move is just the beginning. |

| title | Google and the Future of Gaming |
| body | Google announced today that they are putting their hat in the gaming ring with the Stadia. It’s a cloud-based streaming console that will support some existing PC games and some original titles. We still have a lot of questions, and the console may present problems with bandwidth and data caps, however, Google is promising us the future with this device. In their announcement video, they said that “The future of gaming is not a box, It’s a place” but what if that were true? With VR growing and cloud gaming starting to become a viable platform, what if something like the Oasis (Ready Player One), or the NerveGear (Sword Art Online) came out of this? The thought of a fully realized virtual world is something gamers and sci-fi fans have wanted for years, and while it’s more than likely years away, the Stadia could be a step in that direction. Now I know I’m leaping here, but even with the obvious drawbacks and limitations on a streaming console, It’s going to happen and open doors to more possibility. Imagine playing a game where you can feel the wind on your face, travel to places only dreamt of, being able to fly, or for some walk. It’s ideas like these that will push us in new directions, VR is already starting to catch on, and with the upcoming Oculus Quest it’s becoming accessible for everyone. Now add in a true cloud console, and you have the making of a completely immersive experience. Yes the technology isn’t currently there, but in 10 years maybe; with how fast technology evolves there’s no telling what we're going to have. With Google taking their first step into cloud gaming whether successful or not, it’s going to grab people’s attention and major players like Steam, Microsoft, and Sony are going to take note. Especially with Microsoft already moving in this direction with Project Scarlet, and Steam attempting consoles in the past, the streaming future is closer than we think, and all it will take is one person, just one person to take the next step and create a truly virtual experience. Sure it will come with its own trials and tribulations, but it could change the world and how we think. No matter what comes out of this I’m just excited be along for the ride. |

| title | The Nostalgia Trap |
| body | Nostalgia is great, it lets us look back on the games we love and remember all the good times we had with them. The issue with it is, going back and playing something new can sometimes be disappointing. For me it was Halo, I had never really played any of them before, and with all the hype for MCC coming to PC I decided to jump in and I have to say, I didn’t enjoy it. My issue with Halo 1 and 2 specifically are their mechanics, the aiming(or lack thereof) felt archaic, and the movement sloppy. With FPS controls evolving over time, not having those rose colored glasses makes the game almost unplayable. Now, this isn’t anything against the games, I love GoldenEye and I know if someone jumped into it for the first time they would surely hate it. However, it opened my eyes to this issue, that some of the games I love are just not fun for new players. This isn’t true for all games, NES and SNES games are timeless due to their simple controls and easy to digest visuals. Whereas games from the PS1, N64, PS2, and Xbox days were venturing into new territory in 3-dimensional gaming and haven't aged well. I will reiterate that this doesn’t make these games bad, just that sequels and similar games have improved on the controls so much so that even simple things like aiming and running being absent are noticed. What this really proves to me is despite my hang-ups, most players look back fondly on Halo and that shows how much of an impact they had on the industry. So if you love something and show it to someone and they don’t like it, that’s ok, it’s still special to you and that’s what counts. |

| title | Death Cab for Cutie “Thank You for Today” Review |
| body | Death Cab has been a staple in my playlist for years, and their ninth album “Thank You for Today” is no exception. From start to finish this album hits every note I expect from them, it’s melodic, relaxing, and haunting. “Thank You for Today” is the band’s first foray without ex-guitarist Chris Walla, and you can hear that the band is shifting into a new direction but not forgetting where they came from. With every entry into their discography Death Cab for Cutie has progressed their sound and they didn’t disappoint, by shifting tones and moving forward without a founding member. Death Cab blends the sound of the old and new in such a way that it brings them into 2018 with a statement. That statement is best summed up by bassist Nick Harmer when he said, “I think we struck a really good balance between where we’ve been and what we’re good at and where we want to go”…”I hope people can hear that”. I say we can hear that, “Thank You for Toady” spearheads Death Cab into the future and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come. |

| title | Blue October “I Hope You’re Happy” Review |
| body | Seeing that Blue October released a new album peaked my interest. I’m a huge fan of 90’s alternative and was more than just curious to hear what they had to say in 2018. After my first listen, I was underwhelmed for the most part. I felt they had a few stand out songs like “I Want to Come Back Home” , “Colors Collide”, and the title track “I Hope You’re Happy” but other than that, the album didn’t resonate with me. Despite my personal feelings, you can hear the band’s growth from their angsty days of “Hate Me” and “ Into the Ocean” into a more mature parent like feel. I love seeing the progression of a band, for better or worse,, and I feel that “I Hope You’re Happy” lands in the middle of that spectrum. In the end, Blue October’s “I Hope You’re Happy” is something that I’m sure diehard fans will love, but to me it left no impact and is ultimately forgettable. |

| title | Mac Miller - Swimming Review |
| body | The Pittsburgh MC gets everything off his chest about his recent break-up, with this emotional dive into his mind. "Swimming" is by far the biggest deviation we've gotten from the old "Knock Knock" Mac Miller, and while I look forward to the happy go lucky Mac back, this album is one of his best and one of the best this year. He opens up like we haven't heard before bearing exactly how he feels by letting us into his world, and without taking the easy route and attacking his ex, instead, he channels the pain into a beautiful trip into his emotions. Miller's willingness to be truthful to his fans and himself about what he's going through shows his humility as an artist. However MIller's fans may be divided on this album, similar to his last "The Divine Feminine", but I think the growth that Miller has shown over his career solidifies him as one of the best in the industry. Overall "Swimming" is Miller giving us a glimpse of what he's been feeling, and it's a beautifully melancholic trip that I'm glad he took us down, and if you're a fan of Miller, or looking for something different and raw give "Swimming" a listen, you won't be disappointed. |

Overall "Swimming" is Miller giving us a glimpse of what he's been feeling, and it's a beautifully melancholic trip that I'm glad he took us down, and if you're a fan of Miller, or looking for something different and raw give "Swimming" a listen, you won't be disappointed. |

| title | Impressions of Monster Hunter World, From a Gamer Who’s Never Played a Monster Hunter Game. |
| body | Ok so as the title states, I’ve never played a Monster Hunter game before World, I knew of the franchise but it never really drew me in. I had only decided to pick up World based on a recommendation from my best friend, knowing full well that he only said that so he would have someone to play with but I figured what the hell. I’ll say my very first impression of the game is that it is overwhelming to say the least, even choosing your weapon is daunting. However, after trying every weapon type and choosing my favorite (the charge blade) I was ready to jump in, or so I thought. I underestimated just how in-depth this game was, but that’s what makes it so fun. Having to prepare for the hunt, track the monster, then get involved in a long fight. Let’s back it up though the basics are similar to a typical RPG, you need to watch your health and stamina while also eating to get buffs, and the combat is an easy to learn combo system. Aside from that, Monster Hunter World is its own thing and I cannot get enough. What makes this game so much fun, are the mechanics and drop-in drop-out co-op system. Even though until endgame the co-op system can be muddled, meaning that if you or your friend haven’t seen a cutscene, you cannot do the hunt together. Where as the mechanics of the game (combat and craft system) make playing the game over and over wonderfully fun. I’ve always been a fan of grinding in games and Monster Hunter World is all about the grind, not for levels but for the loot so you can craft and upgrade your equipment. And that’s the loop, you hunt, get loot, then craft, and it’s wonderful; I find myself going back and re-hunting monsters to get all the parts for the weapon or armor that I want. I will say that the story is basically not there or needed, and until endgame the game is rather easy (I soloed almost the whole story) but after you come up against monsters that provide a good challenge. Over all Monster Hunter World has given me a style of game that I never played, and I want so much more of it. P.S. They have an escort mission that they call “The Best Kind of Quest” and that just makes me happy. |

| title | Dragon Ball Fighterz Review |
| body | Next Time on Dragon Ball Z! The most important part of any fighting game, is the controls and Dragon Ball Fighterz nails that. They give us Marvel vs Capcom controls and 3v3 battles wrapped in a beautiful Dragon Ball finish. . That being said the game isn’t perfect, the character selection is low, only giving you 23 characters to start ( if you got the day one edition, other wise 21) and one additional character once you finish the story. Giving the player more characters would have given them a more diverse story, allowing them to fight different characters instead of the same few over and over. The only other negative I have about the game is that sometimes the dialog is stiff, but that’s not a major issue, especially in DBZ. Aside from that I love this game, as a life time DBZ fan Dragon Ball Figherz scratches an itch that I didn’t even know I had. First and foremost the story, It’s a standard Dragon Ball storyline, involving a new enemy and unlikely team-ups. However what Arc System Works has done to make the story unique is tell three separate perspectives on the same story each different but gives new information about the characters and situation. Each character plays a role in the story and and even the lower tier ones are given chances for redemption. The best example of this would be Yamcha, during a fight with Nappa, you have a chance to deflect the Saibaman attack, killing Nappa instead. The story is full of little in-jokes like that for fans of the series, with jokes about Yamcha being weak, or Gohan being jealous of the Ginyu Force’s posing. It’s these simple things that show the developers are fans who understand the series and know where to make jokes . Arc System Works’ treatment of the franchise is what makes this game great, they understand the characters, the world, and the fans. Dragon Ball Fighterz is a beautiful game with tight controls and a good story, and where it lacks in characters it makes up for in the treatment of the franchise. Fans of Dragon Ball should absolutely give this game a chance, even if they are not fighting game fans the story is worth looking into. If I were to rank Fighterz with all other DBZ games, I would place it near the top with Budokai 3 still remaining my favorite, but Figherz is a close second. I only wish the game had a better roster, even though I liked the way everyone fit in the story, I just missed some of my favorite characters. All in all Dragon Ball Fighterz is a strong fighting game that pays homage to one of the most beloved animes of all time, so if you’re a fan do yourself a favor and play this game. |

| title | Micro-transactions in 2018 |
| body | 2017 was a shockingly good year for games, from Zelda and Horizon to Cuphead and Persona 5. However, Micro-transactions might have been the biggest gaming story of the year. After EA’s blundering with Battlefront 2, Micro-transactions got major coverage from the likes of CNN and The New York Times. Even though EA has rescinded the ‘pay-to-win” model that plagued Battlefront after launch, it still soured the reception of the game. It showed us and the industry that not even a franchise as large as Star Wars is immune to failure from Micro-transactions, which is a major win for the consumer. Moving into the new year, we are left wondering in what way are Micro-transactions going to effect us moving forward. If a company as large as EA can take a public hit like what happened with Star Wars, there is the chance that others will see it and pull back on Micro-transactions. I in know way believe that Micro-transactions are gone, rather the companies are going to have to pivot their thinking. We have seen instances where Micro-transactions have been done right, Blizzard’s Overwatch and its cosmetic only loot boxes. There is also the example of Grand Theft Auto, where Rockstar has found an insanity successful longevity with constant updates and add-on packs that add content to the game. Companies like these show that there are Micro-transaction models that do work, the issue being that many other companies go the wrong way, i.e. EA with Star Wars. Looking forward after the EA debacle, I wouldn’t be surprised if companies begin to pivot the way they think about Micro-transactions. That would be the hope at least, that they would look at the success of a Destiny or Overwatch and use that as the basis of their own in-game monetization. If they went that direction, they would have the ability to make both their shareholders and the consumer happy and that is the goal for a publisher. I might be In the minority, because I don’t think the idea of Micro-transactions are inherently wrong, just that companies go about them in the wrong way. When it becomes pay-to-win or pay for content that doesn’t add substance or even charging too much for small content, that is when they become an issue. The truth is, that companies are going to do what they want in order to make money, even if is upsets the fans, but to quote Kinda Funny “we need to vote with our wallets”. Showing publishers that we wont accept the pay-to-win model of gaming will shift their idea of Micro-transactions. It’s not going to be easy or fast, but if we can continue the momentum we gained after Battlefront 2 we have a chance to take back our games. |

| title | Persona 5 Review |
| body | Cheapest Way to Travel to Japan: The Persona series has gained a cult following recently thanks to its PlayStation Vita version of Persona 4, Persona 4 Golden, which introduced the franchize to a new audience. After that success, fans waited patiently for a current gen installment (with Persona 4 originally launching for the PS2). Even after a 6 month difference between the Japanese and American release dates and the streaming debacle after launch (restrictions on content) Persona 5 delivers on everything a fan would want. The visuals of the game give you a highly stylized anime like aesthetic, making it feel like you’re watching a visual novel. The cutscenes play on this even more, looking exactly like a modern anime. The character models can leave something to the imagination though, with a low level of emotion and minimal animations, also most dialog is text with a portrait on the side of the screen. Keep in mind Persona 5 wasn’t developed for the PS4 specifically, its multi-platform on the PS3 as well, which could be why it doesn’t look “Next-Gen” like other games that released around the same time. From a gameplay standpoint however, it outperforms any other jrpg so far this generation (there haven’t been many). The combat is a turn-based system set around a Pokemon “Gotta Catch’em All” collection system, where you gain new Persona with different abilities and weaknesses. These different Persona add a level of strategy to the game, by making the player pay attention to the weakness and strengths of both themselves/allies and the enemy. You also have the ability to fuse your Persona to create new more powerful ones with abilities they don’t have naturally. On top of that, they added new mechanics that allow you to pass on an extra attack when you hit the opponent’s weakness, allowing you to hit other weaknesses or powered up attacks. The game takes you from dungeons called Palaces, where you steal the hearts of your enemies so they confess to their crimes. Aside from the Palaces, there is a procedurally generated dungeon called Mementos, that you explore and unlock new side story moments to deepen your connection to the characters. For me though, the aspect of the game that draws me in most is the daily life of the main character. In which you have to go to school and make Social Links with people around Tokyo to increase your Persona fusion power and unlock new abilities to help you in a multitude of ways. During this you have stats that you can increase to improve your Knowledge, Kindness, Charm, Guts, and Proficiency which help you with your Social Links and gain access you more missions in Mementos. The daily life part makes the game feel Japanese, it does a great job of showing the culture and heritage and give you a generalized idea of life in tokyo. The story like the past installments, is much darker than you would think. Persona 5 is about a group of high schoolers fighting against injustice from corrupt adults. It takes real world problems like sexual assault and workers rights and showcases the inherent evil they create in the world. It also shows how fame can become a hindrance when trying to do the right thing. It does a wonderful job of making the fantastic relatable and entertaining. The characters all have interesting stories and compelling reasons for joining the team and it keeps you entertained throughout the duration of the game. In the end, Persona 5 is a wonderfully quirky and meaningful game that is both challenging and fun. It takes the best aspects of the franchize and jrpgs in general and mixes them into smooth and interesting gameplay. So if you’re a fan of the Persona games, jrpgs, or even just rpgs, you’re doing yourself an injustice not playing this game. |

| body | Walt Would be Proud. The first thing you’ll notice about Cuphead is the artstyle, with its old timey look and beautiful imagery reminiscent of the old Steamboat Willie era of Disney However, don’t let the colorful and cute look fool you, this game is hard, like Mega-Man level hard (at least for me). What started out at a boss rush game, has blossomed into a wonderfully challenging and fun platformer, with unique bosses and levels. The gameplay is simple, just hold X to shoot, A to jump, Y to dash, and RB to switch weapons, but what Cuphead is great at is keeping you on your toes. It has fast paced action throughout every level and boss fight, that will have you relying on precise timing and speed to achieve your goal. On top of that you’re also given a number of different weapon and special choices to change the way you play and approach obstacles. What sets Cuphead above other platformers, is its level of challenge. It finds a great balance between hard bosses/levels and fun and rewarding gameplay. When you beat a boss/level it gives you a great sense of accomplishment, and it never became too frustrating. The story is simple and cute, the two brothers Cuphead and Mugman gamble with the devil and loose their souls. They then make a deal to collect other souls for the devil, but decide to fight him and take their contract back. Other than that, the game just presents you with unique enemies who are all compelling but you don’t learn anything about them. This isn’t an issue though, because it makes the world feel real and lived in. That feeling makes it easy for you to accept the multitude of unique enemies that you face. With its wonderfully beautiful art style and challenging gameplay, Cuphead is a must play for any fan of the genre or games in general, just be ready to die over and over again. |
