After the usual delays with securing graphics cards, I now have all the parts except for the CPU and PSU, both of which are arriving next week. For just the highlights, I'm using an AsRock 110+ Pro, and 10 x MSI Rx 580 Armor 4Gb OC. I'm leaving those additional 3 PCIe slots on the mobo open to be filled either with some 1070s, Vegas or something else. Haven't decided yet.

Anyway, while I'm waiting on the last few parts, I'm in the process of getting everything else organised. I've setup wallets for a variety of coins that look to be worth mining. Dual mining Ethereum and Decred seems to be the best option right now. Lbry is tempting because of how I think its price will go, but we'll see soon.

So, while I'm getting things together, I have a few questions that I'm hoping people here can help with. There will be more pics as the build gets underway!

1. Overclocking and BIOS modding

I've been reading a lot about this. While Anorak seems to be one of the leaders in this, there's all sorts of different results floating around. It certainly seems that if you break 30mh/s or higher, you're doing well. But then there's things like memory timing modding where people are getting up to 33-34. So, what I'm wondering is if there is any reliable source or guide on getting up into the 30+ range?

2. Does extra cooling work give me any extra advantage?

Where the rig is going to be located is constantly very cold. Annually it has an average ambient air temperature around the 17C mark, if not colder. So, in my head, this is beneficial for the GPUs, if even to prolong their life. But, what I'm wondering is, if they're kept cooler, can they be clocked a little harder to get a higher hashrate?

3. After the usual delays with securing graphics cards, I now have all the parts except for the CPU and PSU, both of which are arriving next week. For just the highlights, I'm using an AsRock 110+ Pro, and 10 x MSI Rx 580 Armor 4Gb OC. I'm leaving those additional 3 PCIe slots on the mobo open to be filled either with some 1070s, Vegas or something else. | body | Thanks! Its a confusing endeavor, and its very frustrating when people are so negative about it. On paper, i think theres money to be made, especially when i see posts by people running 50+ cards. Im thinking that a lot of it comes down to how you manage your setup, but i could really use some advice from some more experienced miners!! |

With a view to expanding this over the next 12 months, I'm using this as a "Proof of Concept" effort, in that if it proves to be profitable, I'll be expanding to 40-60 cards early next year.

So what does this have to do with Steem and Reddit?

Well, once upon a time, I'm sure many of you were similarly nervous about getting into mining. There are profits to be made if you do things right. After 3 months of research, every time I think I'm ready to dive in, there's a cause for concern. Right now, I'm debating 1060 6Gb vs RX 580 8Gb, and considering things like the amd hashrate drop coming soon, other alt coins etc., I'm more confused than ever!

Back to the reddit/steem thing. While reddit people reply quicker than on steem, there is less encouragement there than here. I've been greeted with "this noob is in for a big shock" over there. Nice. Encouraging. But they've also got some good guides. So, rant over.

In conclusion, confused and stressed about GPU choices, nervous about actually getting into mining, mildly miffed with reddit.

Should I actually get into mining at this stage?

|

The DAG file is expected to go above 3Gb around April 2017, and, 2. Ether mining is expected to go to a Proof of Stake setup some time next year. While I have yet to setup my first mine, I'm going to be ordering my parts on August 1st, and so these too are concerns which I have. So, what can be done to mitigate potential issues?

Well, for me personally, I'm looking at a two-stage approach, that I would appreciate any additional input on.

1. GPU selection

My initial plan was to go with a slew of 3Gb GTX 1060s. They've been proven to be very efficient and economical, and at face value, they look great, especially as there is arguably no reason to go for the 6Gb version, other than avoiding the DAG issue. Upon revision, the plan is to go for 12 x 1050 Ti. They're 4Gb, and as cheap as it gets. So 12 x 1050 Ti is actually giving me a better return than 4 x 1060. Opinions?

2. ZCash/ZCash Classic seem to be pretty good right now, but I'm not sure if there's a better option.

Any comments or suggestions?

|

| body | Isn't this old news? They were announced quite a while ago. The reason they don't have output codec is because they are specifically built for mining. They're still 2-lane slot, and actually, initial test results show that they aren't stacking up to the claimed hashrates. https://videocardz.com/nvidia/geforce-1000/nvidia-p106-100 https://videocardz.com/nvidia/geforce-1000/nvidia-p104-100 There's also an unboxing/test video of the MSI and Galaxy ones here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9deSVpjm1Kk The sapphire mining cards are also available for preorder on overclockers uk. So yeah, not really new news. Sorry. :( |
