titleThis Is Why Gun Control Is Bullshit
body![knotted-gun.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXtsoRgzexCMiJtSSXPUBHrT7kvqzXJdT8wY2qSTmM8B9/knotted-gun.jpg)This is why gun control is bullshit: you can't fix a demand-side problem with a supply-side solution. America is not a violent nation because of an easy supply of guns, America has an easy supply of guns because it's a violent nation. (I'm not implying America is unique in this regard. Violence is a characteristic of human nature, and every country and every culture has its own level of tolerated violence) Each side in the debate likes to cherry-pick data to support their preconceived conclusions and claim the problem is one of "simple math". It's not. You can't apply simple diagnoses (or remedies) to complex sociological problems. And believe me, America's thirst for violence is not a case of "simple math". In a nutshell, the gun control fallacy amounts to this: It assumes that controlling the supply of guns will complicate and mute people's demand for guns, thereby resulting in a drop in violence. But this isn't the case. People who commit acts of violence don't have a demand for guns, they have a demand for violence. And as long as individuals in any given society believe that violence is an acceptable or workable solution to their real or perceived grievances, they will continue to turn to that solution. And they will use any tools available: guns, knives, poison, fertilizer, whatever. Anyone who's had to endure training in sales techniques knows the difference between features and benefits, and they know that consumers purchase benefits, not features. Benefits are the things consumers are looking for: comfort, security, alleviation of pain, peace of mind, sexual gratification, etc. Features are the details, not the motivation. People choose violence because they perceive the results of violence as a benefit. Guns are merely features, one means to an end, nothing more. Gun control will not only do nothing to stem the demand for violence, it will most likely produce unintended consequences that are anathema to the people who propose it, just as outlawing abortion resulted in coat-hanger terminations and alcohol prohibition resulted in "bathtub gin" and cocaine prohibition resulted in "crack". I shudder to think of the horrific ways in which people will alleviate their demand for violence in a world where guns are difficult to procure. So, does that mean I'm saying the "causes" of violence are prescription meds or video games? Not necessarily. As I said above, violence in America is a complex sociological problem, requiring us all to address a complex set of sociological solutions. Which means applying close scrutiny to our institutions from the top down. If America is truly a violent society, then we need to ask why our fellow countrymen seem to have an inordinate demand for violence, a propensity to choose violent or force-based solutions to their perceived problems. The answer, most likely, can be found in our institutions, those organizations to which we delegate the education and propagation of our most deeply-held convictions. That means: schools, churches, businesses, and most especially governments. This means focusing on solutions that address the core problem: the Ideology of Violence. It's in schools that teach authoritarianism instead of critical thinking. It's in governments that choose military solutions to problems of diplomacy. It's in a culture that promotes cheating and success over adding value and practicing thrift. It's in families that use corporal punishment instead of positive reinforcement. It's all around us, and that's where we should be focusing our efforts. And when I say "we" I'm addressing my fellow voluntarists and anarchists and libertarians--at least, all who care about this issue and wish to address it. Because statists sure as hell aren't going to. They're too wedded to their Ideology of Violence to understand how it's a suicide pact with the State. They're too attached to the political theater surrounding the proposal and passage of legislation to realize that they're utterly wasting their time on irrelevant, irresponsible poppycock. "We"--those of us who understand the Non-Aggression Principle and oppose the violence of Statism--are the only ones cognizant enough to identify the real problem and courageous enough to address it. We are the best--if not only--hope for the future of civilized society. In the end, "gun control" is simply a nonsensical, unworkable "solution" to a misdiagnosed problem. It's not "simple math", it's simple minded. It's pseudo-science: it's like using homeopathy to cure cancer. It not only WON'T fix the problem it's adherents want fixed, it will most likely make it worse. Thanks for reading! Check out my homepage at Voluntarist.me. And find me on MeWe and Twitter and don't forget to #DeleteFacebook.

Not necessarily. As I said above, violence in America is a complex sociological problem, requiring us all to address a complex set of sociological solutions. Which means applying close scrutiny to our institutions from the top down.\n\nIf America is truly a violent society, then we need to ask why our fellow countrymen seem to have an inordinate demand for violence, a propensity to choose violent or force-based solutions to their perceived problems. The answer, most likely, can be found in our institutions, those organizations to which we delegate the education and propagation of our most deeply-held convictions. That means: schools, churches, businesses, and most especially governments.\n\nThis means focusing on solutions that address the core problem: the Ideology of Violence. It's in schools that teach authoritarianism instead of critical thinking. It's in governments that choose military solutions to problems of diplomacy. It's in a culture that promotes cheating and success over adding value and practicing thrift. It's in families that use corporal punishment instead of positive reinforcement. It's all around us, and that's where we should be focusing our efforts.\n\nAnd when I say \"we\" I'm addressing my fellow voluntarists and anarchists and libertarians--at least, all who care about this issue and wish to address it. \"We\"--those of us who understand the Non-Aggression Principle and oppose the violence of Statism--are the only ones cognizant enough to identify the real problem and courageous enough to address it. We are the best--if not only--hope for the future of civilized society. \n\nIn the end, \"gun control\" is simply a nonsensical, unworkable \"solution\" to a misdiagnosed problem. It's not \"simple math\", it's simple minded. It's pseudo-science: it's like using homeopathy to cure cancer. It not only WON'T fix the problem it's adherents want fixed, it will most likely make it worse.\n\nThanks for reading! Check out my homepage at Voluntarist.me. And find me on MeWe and Twitter and don't forget to #DeleteFacebook.",

titleFacebook Is A Totalitarian Hellhole
body![Facebook - Periscope.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPdhyhDTX6jE2jdUYoqX2peS71NKWwDDjfd1wLmFjgUhS/Facebook%20-%20Periscope.jpg)I liken social media to a dance hall. You can have all the best accommodations, hire the toniest bands, and juice the place up with strobe lights and special effects...but it's still no fun if no one shows up. That was the problem with Google+. It had everything going for it, but there wasn't any reason (at the time) for anyone to show up. It was an empty gymnasium, with a few wallflowers standing on the sidelines, no one to dance with. Facebook, on the other hand, is more like an inner-city street festival gone astray. We keep going back, because everyone's there right? But when we get there we find we're packed shoulder-to-shoulder, the drinks are overpriced and watered down, and you can barely even hear the band because of all the crying babies and obnoxious drunks. Meanwhile, someone's always getting mugged or raped, and your best friend got ejected after Security caught him smoking weed in the Porta-Potty. In short, Facebook has become a bummer, a buzzkill, and it's just not fun any more. Not only that, but the company itself has become abusive. Drunk with their own power, and infused with hubris, they've become Too Big To Fail--at least in their own eyes. Their early success created a monetization problem which they've apparently solved at the expense of the users who made the site popular to begin with. In other words, we've been used, folks. Worst of all, they're collaborators. They've become so embedded with the state establishment that they're essentially becoming the social media wing of the government. Their propensity to control the narrative and monitor dissent should be disturbing to any freethinking individual. They've morphed into North Korea, with Kim Dong Zuck as Dear Leader. Everyone knows this. I'm not saying anything surprising here. But people keep going back, even after being banned and deleted and harrassed relentlessly. Why? Two reasons: 1) Nobody wants to dance by themselves, and 2) All the action is on Facebook. The first reason is a large part of why I've become a MeWe evangelist of late. It's not like they're paying me, I just want a place to get my social on without being abused. A place that will woo me but not rape me. MeWe seems like a good place to dance, I just need some partners so I'm not doing a Billy Idol. But I get it: all the action is on Facebook. It's like AC/DC's Hell: "all our friends are there". But think about that for a minute: how many of those friends do you actually interact with on a regular basis? How big is your monkeysphere? What's your Dunbar Number for social media? Do you REALLY get to see everything all the really important people post, or they you? I doubt it. You can still pare down your friends list or join a small group, but understand that Facebook DOES NOT APPROVE, and will do everything they can to engineer you back into the commercially approved slipstream. They control the algorithm, which means they control the conversations. It's also enlightening to understand the insidious methods Facebook uses to keep people addicted. Nir Eyar, author of "Hooked", has spelled out the steps of what he calls "Behavioral Design", a method to create products that use subtle psychological manipulation techniques to get us engaged and KEEP us there. Facebook was one of his principle models. They literally have us "hooked". Well, I know a thing or two about behavior myself (my car tag says OPERANT1), and I tend to resent being used. There are ways to counter environmental conditioning, and they're not really difficult, if you're motivated to do so. So, if you too are tired of Facebook's creeping totalitarianism and interested in finding a better place to hang, consider these six steps I'm taking to Get The Facebook Monkey Off My Back (how's that for a Planter's Mix of metaphors?) 1. Set up your account on MeWe, fill in the details and post a Hello post. Look for all your friends who are already there, and send them invitations. 2. Turn on all your MeWe notifications, and plan to check it anyway twice a day for postings, and to post something. The well ain't gonna prime itself; action creates momentum. 3. Next, go back to Facebook and post "Follow Me To MeWe" followed by your MeWe handle. Then invite 10 of your best friends, and tell them to invite ten of their best friends. Behold the power of exponentiation. Put the multiplier effect to work. 4. Now, TURN OFF all your Facebook external notifications. Yep, you heard me. The mobile app with the little "23" on top....delete it or hide it. The emails telling you that your mother-in-law "liked" your latest Pepe meme....unsubscribe. Stop that shit cold. Instead, start checking Facebook twice a day, and even then check ONLY YOUR NOTIFICATIONS. Forgodsake don't scroll randomly, what the hell good is THAT? Just check and answer your actual friend engagements. The rest is just static. 5. Start posting all of your minor conversational things on MeWe ONLY. I'm talking about FEE articles you liked or news stories you want to comment on or funny ass memes. Stop putting that stuff on Facebook so that 4900 of your 5000 friends who won't see it, won't see it. Put it where the friends who matter and will see it anyway will see it anyway: MeWe. 6. Delete Facebook Messenger. It's CANCER. Use MeWe as your new **chat platform**. Think of it as Telegram with a social media page attached. Better privacy than Whats App, which is owned by Fascistbook after all. Anything's better than Facebook Messenger! 7. After a couple of weeks, start preparing yourself to ditch Facebook. Download all of your uploaded data (FB lets you do this--just go to your Settings and find the link. They will let you download a zip file. Warning: it took me 3 hours to download mine). Start deleting your personal information (phone numbers, emails, etc) as much as possible, because from what I hear Facebook becomes a stalker after you leave. Disengage from as many groups as possible. Pretend as if they are about to delete your account. Because these days who knows they actually might. WE ALL KNOW SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN ZUCC'D. But more importantly, it makes staying on Facebook less important. This gives us more freedom to act without worry of repercussion. When you're ready to leave completely, delete your mobile apps and remove the link from your browser. Then decide whether you want to Abandon or Deactivate. I chose to Abandon, because that worked just fine for Myspace and Deactivating doesn't really accomplish a whole helluva lot anyway (Facebook will have the information you've entered so far forever and ever, amen). Also, those who want to keep their business pages active can't deactivate without losing them. This is one reason I Abandoned rather than Deactivated; nevertheless, I will most likely Deactivate eventually. You've now successfully eliminated 90% of the garbage out of your life and replaced it with a good solid 10% of high-quality social interaction. Now, there are a couple more reasons why you might want to keep that FB account for awhile: If you have a business page you want to maintain, or If you are a content creator of some sort. I'll address those separately. 1) The business page part is easy--Facebook has a Pages App that you can download and check on, post to, and respond to messages on all your business pages without ever having to see any information from your home page. This is FANTASTIC! Now I can deal with my social media business contacts without ever having to smell the sewerage emanating from Facebook proper. End of story. 2) Now, if you're a content creator--whether it's Steemit articles or YouTube videos or a blog or podcasts or memes--you're probably going to want to post them or links to them where the greatest number of people will see them. I get that. But remember the whole point of that is not to engage in social networking per se but to engage and connect and drive people to your content, a place where they can engage with you away from Facebook's totalitarian watchful gaze. Luckily, there's a way around that too. Create a Twitter account. Go to Settings-->Apps-->Facebook Connect, and choose "Post to my Facebook Profile". You're done. Now everything you post on Twitter automatically goes to your Facebook page, where those same 4900 friends who never saw your stuff before can continue not seeing it. You won't be able to see how many people "Liked" it, and you won't be able to read any of the nasty comments, but that's a GOOD THING. The only thing that really counts is clicks and engagement--the rest is just meaningless distraction. So that's it. That's how I intend to make Facebook insignificant in my life without giving up anything good about social media. I hope everyone follows suit, and follows me to MeWe. Leaving Facebook doesn't have to mean leaving my Facebook friends. We're just moving the party to a better location. Come with, let's dance!

Meanwhile, someone's always getting mugged or raped, and your best friend got ejected after Security caught him smoking weed in the Porta-Potty. In short, Facebook has become a bummer, a buzzkill, and it's just not fun any more.\n\nNot only that, but the company itself has become abusive. Drunk with their own power, and infused with hubris, they've become Too Big To Fail--at least in their own eyes. Their early success created a monetization problem which they've apparently solved at the expense of the users who made the site popular to begin with. In other words, we've been used, folks.\n\nWorst of all, they're collaborators. They've become so embedded with the state establishment that they're essentially becoming the social media wing of the government. Their propensity to control the narrative and monitor dissent should be disturbing to any freethinking individual. \n\nThey've morphed into North Korea, with Kim Dong Zuck as Dear Leader.\n\nEveryone knows this. I'm not saying anything surprising here. But people keep going back, even after being banned and deleted and harrassed relentlessly. Why? Two reasons: 1) Nobody wants to dance by themselves, and 2) All the action is on Facebook.\n\nThe first reason is a large part of why I've become a MeWe evangelist of late. It's not like they're paying me, I just want a place to get my social on without being abused. A place that will woo me but not rape me. MeWe seems like a good place to dance, I just need some partners so I'm not doing a Billy Idol.\n\nBut I get it: all the action is on Facebook. It's like AC/DC's Hell: \"all our friends are there\". \n\nIt's also enlightening to understand the insidious methods Facebook uses to keep people addicted. Nir Eyar, author of \"Hooked\", has spelled out the steps of what he calls \"Behavioral Design\", a method to create products that use subtle psychological manipulation techniques to get us engaged and KEEP us there. Facebook was one of his principle models. They literally have us \"hooked\".\n\nWell, I know a thing or two about behavior myself (my car tag says OPERANT1), and I tend to resent being used. There are ways to counter environmental conditioning, and they're not really difficult, if you're motivated to do so. \n\nSo, if you too are tired of Facebook's creeping totalitarianism and interested in finding a better place to hang, consider these six steps I'm taking to Get The Facebook Monkey Off My Back (how's that for a Planter's Mix of metaphors?)\n\n\n1. Set up your account on MeWe, fill in the details and post a Hello post. Look for all your friends who are already there, and send them invitations. \n\n2. Turn on all your MeWe notifications, and plan to check it anyway twice a day for postings, and to post something. The well ain't gonna prime itself; action creates momentum.\n\n3. Next, go back to Facebook and post \"Follow Me To MeWe\" followed by your MeWe handle. Then invite 10 of your best friends, and tell them to invite ten of their best friends. Behold the power of exponentiation. Put the multiplier effect to work.\n\n4. Now, TURN OFF all your Facebook external notifications. Yep, you heard me. The mobile app with the little \"23\" on top....delete it or hide it. The emails telling you that your mother-in-law \"liked\" your latest Pepe meme....unsubscribe. Stop that shit cold. Instead, start checking Facebook twice a day, and even then check ONLY YOUR NOTIFICATIONS. Forgodsake don't scroll randomly, what the hell good is THAT? Just check and answer your actual friend engagements. The rest is just static.\n\n5. Start posting all of your minor conversational things on MeWe ONLY. I'm talking about FEE articles you liked or news stories you want to comment on or funny ass memes. Stop putting that stuff on Facebook so that 4900 of your 5000 friends who won't see it, won't see it. Put it where the friends who matter and will see it anyway will see it anyway: MeWe.\n\n6. Delete Facebook Messenger. It's CANCER. Use MeWe as your new **chat platform**. Think of it as Telegram with a social media page attached. Better privacy than Whats App, which is owned by Fascistbook after all. Anything's better than Facebook Messenger!\n\n7. This is one reason I Abandoned rather than Deactivated; nevertheless, I will most likely Deactivate eventually.\n\nYou've now successfully eliminated 90% of the garbage out of your life and replaced it with a good solid 10% of high-quality social interaction. Now, there are a couple more reasons why you might want to keep that FB account for awhile: If you have a business page you want to maintain, or If you are a content creator of some sort. I'll address those separately.\n\n1) The business page part is easy--Facebook has a Pages App that you can download and check on, post to, and respond to messages on all your business pages without ever having to see any information from your home page. This is FANTASTIC! Now I can deal with my social media business contacts without ever having to smell the sewerage emanating from Facebook proper. End of story.\n\n2) Now, if you're a content creator--whether it's Steemit articles or YouTube videos or a blog or podcasts or memes--you're probably going to want to post them or links to them where the greatest number of people will see them. I get that. But remember the whole point of that is not to engage in social networking per se but to engage and connect and drive people to your content, a place where they can engage with you away from Facebook's totalitarian watchful gaze. Luckily, there's a way around that too. Create a Twitter account. Go to Settings-->Apps-->Facebook Connect, and choose \"Post to my Facebook Profile\". You're done. Now everything you post on Twitter automatically goes to your Facebook page, where those same 4900 friends who never saw your stuff before can continue not seeing it. You won't be able to see how many people \"Liked\" it, and you won't be able to read any of the nasty comments, but that's a GOOD THING. The only thing that really counts is clicks and engagement--the rest is just meaningless distraction. \n\nSo that's it. That's how I intend to make Facebook insignificant in my life without giving up anything good about social media. I hope everyone follows suit, and follows me to MeWe. Leaving Facebook doesn't have to mean leaving my Facebook friends. We're just moving the party to a better location. Come with, let's dance!",

titleThe Pigeons of Parkland
body![1_IMW6eNXVUGimP0qvmjmNEg.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaSFVENDHzozahNk6MihTVsGJnbH8pPgjPnCcGeHByW6D/1_IMW6eNXVUGimP0qvmjmNEg.jpeg) "Listen to the Parkland students," the progressive gungrabbing lobby tells us. "Listen to the kids leading the "Never Again" movement. They are the conscience of a nation." Poppycock, balderdash, and bullshit. These kids aren't the conscience of the nation, they're not even representative of the majority of American high school students. They're a tiny minority of trained pigeons, pecking out propaganda programmed by the same Youth EMPOWER manipulators that are telling us to listen to them. Youth EMPOWER is an ad-hoc coalition comprised of The Women's March, Peace First, Rise to Run, Teen Vogue, The Justice League NYC, The Gathering For Justice, and Rock the Vote. Their mission is "to provide young people with the tools needed to create high school and college chapters that guide students in making a positive impact in their communities" and "to take actions around causes that matter to them." And what "matters to them"? According to a 2015 Gallup poll of kids age 13-17, the most important issues facing kids age 13-17 are concerns about "Self-Esteem and Body Image, Stress, Bullying, Depression, Cyber Addiction, Drinking and Smoking, Teen Pregnancy, Underage Sex, Child Abuse, Peer-Pressure and Competition, and Eating Disorders". So how does Youth EMPOWER address these concerns? They encourage students to download a "Toolkit" with 3 sections: 1)"To support Young Leaders in leading chapter members through the process of identifying the causes that matter to them and ... guide them in developing action-based activism skills, 2) register to vote, and 3) encourage women and minorities to run for political office. Wait...what? What exactly is being "empowered" here? The gun control fanatics in Youth EMPOWER have been lurking, planning, and mobilizing since the implosion of the Clinton Dynasty. They've infiltrated the NEA and weaseled their way into student civic organizations, waiting patiently for the next (inevitable) school massacre for their chance to strike. Sadly, Omar Mateen and Stephen Paddock weren't students, nor did they choose to shoot up a school, so the plans had to be put on hold. But not for long, of course. Nikolas Cruz came through for them. And, before the bodies were even cold and the last bloodstains wiped up off the hall floors of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, they struck. The appalling irony in all this is that none of these efforts designed to create and pass stricter gun control legislation have a snowball's chance in hell of actually succeeding in their stated goal. Nothing's going to "get better", no lives are going to be saved, and there will be--just as inevitably--another school massacre sometime in the not-so-distant-future. It matters not what pointless measures pass through congress and get enacted into law, psychopaths rarely consult federal statutes before inflicting carnage. *Rage is not subject to government regulation, although it's often a result of it.* And people will feign surprise all over again, and they'll manufacture outrage at irrelevant targets like the NRA and claim that--*gosh darnit it!*--it must've been those two or three measures that were line-itemed out or some kind of loophole in the previous gun control laws enacted that let this happen, so we must close them / fix it post-haste! And the cycle will start all over again. The progressive establishment will never solve the problem of public school or societal violence because they don't have a clue what the problem really is. They think (or pretend to think) it's "guns", and they point to the the students they've trained to peck out this non-solution and admonish us to "listen" to them. And the media complies dutifully. But, as indicated by the hilariously clueless "causes" Youth EMPOWER has been trumpeting indicate, they've been "listening" to the wrong students all along. You want to know who we should be "listening" to? You know who REALLY has the answer to why mass shootings happen? It's students alright, just not the ones being offered up as icons. Let's let their actions--their actual, measurable, visible behavior, rather than words--"speak" for them: Let's "listen" to the 1.2 million kids who drop out of high school annually (that's roughly 7000 **per day**). Let's "listen" to the roughly 2.8 million kids who are prescribed psychotropic drugs for "ADHD" every year. Let's "listen" to the 3500 high school kids who attempt suicide EVERY DAY (suicide is the second leading cause of death in ages 10-24). Let's "listen" to the 30% of students who are victims of bullying--often with the complicity of school authorities and parents. Let's listen to the cutters and the stoners and the goths and the weirdos, because THEY comprise a larger and more significant percentage of the school population in this country than the cherry-picked apple polishers being propped on the cover of TIME and offered up as the "voices" of a generation. It's THESE kids--the ones sentenced to 12 years of Public School Prison from age 5, trapped at desks for 8 hours of their day throughout their childhood and adolescence, saddled with so much "homework" they barely have time to relax or enjoy being with their families, subjected to drugs and oppressive behavioral manipulation, and finally programmed to say and believe what the progressive establishment wants them to say and believe -- it's THESE kids who are rebelling and failing and going crazy and killing themselves--and yes, occasionally going on mass shooting sprees--who are REALLY telling us what we need to know about what's wrong with our public school system, and our society. And YOU, my dear liberal/progressive baby boomers and Gen-Xers--those of you who support and propagate this public school system and treat the students like inmates in an asylum whom you can subject to your cancerous progressive propaganda--you don't want us to listen to THEM, because you don't want us to know who's REALLY to blame for mass violence inflicting public schools. ***Because they're telling us, loud and clear, through their actions, that it's YOU***.

bodyHomeless rights are Human Rights. The fn pigs came at me with their lies and attempted to get my ID off of me. I basically told them no. I am fortunate to have a cell phone and have been [recording them](https://youtu.be/b59-FI7e7DE) while they violated my rights. After the second goon arrived on the scene he lied to the first alleging that I was the "suspect" they were looking for. They also claimed I had been in violation of a restraining order, but they had misidentified me. I had to badger them for nearly ten minutes before they admitted that they were looking for someone else. They only changed their town and stopped shining an ultra bright flashlight in my face once I told them I need to see their sergeant. I like to say that homeless are the new untouchables, people pass judgement and alienate the people in society who are most at risk and who are assisted the least. There are seriously dangerous people in this world, most of them are not homeless, rather they are the goons who have guns; badges and authority to violate the rights of the mentally ill with impunity, and without remorse. After reading the first part of your post I was all set to blast you for the judgmental build up. However after reading to the end I have to thank you. It happens all too often that people have their rights violated by the fn pigs. When citizens like yourself speak up and make your voice heard, the pigs have to question whether they will be able to carry out their fascist behaviors in a vacuum as they are accustomed. #ACAB #FTP #FascistAmerica

titleThe Thin Blue Safety Net
body![636282991548556930-Homeless2.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaaEq8MPx8zureFo1VhUjxRD1GaPJeo2e9fxJeLzwr2Ws/636282991548556930-Homeless2.jpg) As far as I can tell, there isn't a single solitary commercial streetcorner in all of Tallahassee that's not manned by a homeless person with a sign, and many of them have several. The fast food joints, convenience stores and Walmart parking lots are also full of them, sometimes panhandling and sometimes "between shifts", stuffing down a burger or burrito from the value menus or just cooling off in the air conditioning or using the restrooms. Every city park has it's contingent as well, and a few of them have barely-detectable shantytowns hidden off in the brush, accessible only by makeshift trailheads hidden behind dumpsters and public restrooms. Factor in the fact that Tallahassee is the state capital, home to hundreds of politicians and bureaucrats, and it's very likely home to more deadbeats than all the other cities and towns in Florida combined. And no, these aren't down-on-their-luck transients, folks who've gotten a bad break or made a bad decision and found themselves struggling temporarily. Most of these guys have been here for a couple of years, shuffling around town to "work" different streetcorners, cot surfing the shelters until they reach their day limit or do something beligerent and get kicked out, again. One guy I know lives under a collection of tarps behind the sluice at Martha Woodman Park, another lives under an old wooden sign leaning against the back of a Dollar General. I frequent a McDonald's next to the interstate. I buy their tea and poach their WiFi between clients, and almost always get to play witness to Street People Theater, the 21st century equivalent of Beggar's Opera, sans music. There are loners, and there are cliques. The cliques are usually centered around this one woman, and they seem to comprise a group of men all jockeying to see which one can be her "boyfriend". Or maybe it's because she's the only one with a cellphone, who knows. The cliques are uniformly obnoxious, but the loners are just sad. These people are human wreckage, used and spit out by the machine, with nobody left with the financial ability or emotional strength necessary to be their caretakers. This leaves them at the mercy of the streets, or the state. And by "state", I don't mean the mental health facilities that are the laughable excuse for a safety net that only the well-connected and well-established can afford to navigate. I mean the police. Some of these folks are borderline scary, and might be comical if they weren't so devastatingly heartbreaking. In one 24-hour period I witnessed two who were carrying on animated conversations with invisible companions. One guy (white, twenty-something) was speaking in the clipped, officious tone of an interrogator, taunting his victim that he knew damn well about his activities at Roswell and that he couldn't fool him because he was from Venus too. Another white twenty-something, this time a woman, was adamant that her companion was "Lucifer", and that he/she was the one responsible for "sending all those niggers over to rape my womb." Both of these dialogues caused ripples of concern and hilarity in the McDonald's, and the woman smartly ejected herself before management had to intervene. Perhaps the saddest of these transients is a guy whose name I learned is Josh. Josh smells bad but never says anything, preferring to sit at the bar next to the endlessly-looping "McDonald's TV". I'm guessing he can recite the hour-long collection of gameshow snippets, Big Bang Theory scenelets, and McDonald's commercials by heart now (I might could myself). Josh always buys something, and I've never seen him panhandling. I have, however, seen his difficulty managing space. Josh is dealing not with imaginary friends, but imaginary barriers. They seem to be mathematical: when he goes to sit in his seat, he must first go through a ritual where he "almost" sits, but gets back up again, over and over. Four times, sometimes more, he goes through this ritual. I see this outside as well, as he approaches the sidewalk to walk over to the Circle K next door: he walks to the curb, turns around, and walks back four steps, then turns around and walks back to the curb, etc. Josh has a hard time dealing, but he's dealing. Last night I found myself back at McDonald's, over in the corner updating a client's training plan before bopping home, when I saw Josh getting out of a car outside. A brief flicker of alarm flitted through my brain--he drives? I guessed he lived in his car and was probably all he had, but it was still concerning to think about this guy--who can barely walk without difficulty--driving unaccompanied on the road. It took him a few minutes to make it in. When he did, I noticed the people at the counter were directing him to use the kiosk. This distressed him, and I wondered about the cluelessness of the employees who didn't realize that this simple exercise might very well be beyond his capabilities. Just take his damn money, I thought to myself, he's only getting a McMuffin and a drink and there's nobody else in line, forgodsake. But to the kiosk he went, and fumbled there for a good minute before I decided to get up and help him. I asked him what he was trying to order and he told me, and I punched it in and totaled it and asked him how he wanted to pay. He had cash, so I closed his order and gave him the little ticket, which he had to take to the counter anyway to complete his order and pick up his cup. In other words, I did their job for them, but they took his money anyway. I sat back down and tried to wrap up my evening's work. After about ten minutes, the police walked in. Four of them. One of them approached Josh and asked if he had some ID. You could see his body language change immediately. This came totally out of the blue to him. He was just eating his damn McMuffin, watching Drew Carey hand out cash prizes, and up walks a group of Men In Uniform to Interrogate Him. Who wouldn't be distraught? "N...no" he stuttered (and I immediately thought of Billy Bibbet from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest). "I don't have my ID." "What's your name?" "Josh (something, I couldn't make out his last name)." "Well Josh, do you have a home?" "Yes." Really? I was flabbergasted again. For weeks I'd assumed Josh was homeless. But then I find out he not only drives, but has a home. Wow. "Josh," the cop continued, "do you realize you have a restraining order against you?" "No, no I don't....I've talked to the managers here, they're cool with me..." The cop continued on, using the modulated voice of an interrogator--not unlike the guy from Venus I mentioned above...and not unlike Nurse Ratched, actually--and he continued to grill Josh, who was visibly shaking and obviously distressed. "I don't have a restraining order!" he insisted. "He does," another cop chimed in. "My partner says you do Josh." "Well I don't know anything about it. You can't do this." "Yes we can Josh. I was told you have a restraining order and you've come back here anyway. Why shouldn't I take you to jail?" Now Josh was about to lose it. "This is illegal! You can't do this!" His voice had moved up a few octaves, and sweat was starting to bead up on his forehead. "Josh it's not advisable to resist." "I'm NOT RESISTING!" Well that was all I could take. I jumped up and got between the cops and Josh: "Josh, don't do this," I pleaded, trying to remain as calm as I could to offset his obvious panic. "You won't win, just walk away. Please." He never even made eye contact with me. He was too agitated by this time. And then the piglet intervened. "Sir I'm only going to ask you once to sit down." I gave him a glance and looked back at Josh. "Please Josh, please." Then I sat down. A few minutes later they had Josh in handcuffs. He was still protesting that they "couldn't do this", and that it was "illegal". That's the last I saw of him. I packed up my laptop and headed to the door. The manager on duty--the one who called the cops on Josh--called out to me in a chipper voice: "All finished?" "Fuck yeah I'm finished." Her smile froze. She had never seen this side of me, obviously. I was livid, too distraught to manage the speech in my head I would've liked to deliver. But I did manage this: "Did you ever see To Kill A Mockingbird?" I asked. She didn't respond, just stood there frozen looking at me, probably wondering if she was going to have to call the cops again. "Remember the character Boo Radley? He was the gentle simpleton who everyone was scared of and taunted, even though he was actually harmless and kindhearted. Remember? Yeah, well, you just called a group of violent criminals out to harass and kidnap Boo Radley. Congratu-fucking-lations." It was lame, but I guess it will have to do. I'm not going back. There are plenty of places with WiFi. And with better food as well. And better people

Every city park has it's contingent as well, and a few of them have barely-detectable shantytowns hidden off in the brush, accessible only by makeshift trailheads hidden behind dumpsters and public restrooms. \n\nFactor in the fact that Tallahassee is the state capital, home to hundreds of politicians and bureaucrats, and it's very likely home to more deadbeats than all the other cities and towns in Florida combined.\n\nAnd no, these aren't down-on-their-luck transients, folks who've gotten a bad break or made a bad decision and found themselves struggling temporarily. Most of these guys have been here for a couple of years, shuffling around town to \"work\" different streetcorners, cot surfing the shelters until they reach their day limit or do something beligerent and get kicked out, again. One guy I know lives under a collection of tarps behind the sluice at Martha Woodman Park, another lives under an old wooden sign leaning against the back of a Dollar General. \n\nI frequent a McDonald's next to the interstate. I buy their tea and poach their WiFi between clients, and almost always get to play witness to Street People Theater, the 21st century equivalent of Beggar's Opera, sans music. There are loners, and there are cliques. The cliques are usually centered around this one woman, and they seem to comprise a group of men all jockeying to see which one can be her \"boyfriend\". Or maybe it's because she's the only one with a cellphone, who knows.\n\nThe cliques are uniformly obnoxious, but the loners are just sad. These people are human wreckage, used and spit out by the machine, with nobody left with the financial ability or emotional strength necessary to be their caretakers. This leaves them at the mercy of the streets, or the state. And by \"state\", I don't mean the mental health facilities that are the laughable excuse for a safety net that only the well-connected and well-established can afford to navigate. I mean the police.\n\nSome of these folks are borderline scary, and might be comical if they weren't so devastatingly heartbreaking. Another white twenty-something, this time a woman, was adamant that her companion was \"Lucifer\", and that he/she was the one responsible for \"sending all those niggers over to rape my womb.\" Both of these dialogues caused ripples of concern and hilarity in the McDonald's, and the woman smartly ejected herself before management had to intervene. \n\nPerhaps the saddest of these transients is a guy whose name I learned is Josh. Josh smells bad but never says anything, preferring to sit at the bar next to the endlessly-looping \"McDonald's TV\". They seem to be mathematical: when he goes to sit in his seat, he must first go through a ritual where he \"almost\" sits, but gets back up again, over and over. Four times, sometimes more, he goes through this ritual. I see this outside as well, as he approaches the sidewalk to walk over to the Circle K next door: he walks to the curb, turns around, and walks back four steps, then turns around and walks back to the curb, etc. Josh has a hard time dealing, but he's dealing.\n\nLast night I found myself back at McDonald's, over in the corner updating a client's training plan before bopping home, when I saw Josh getting out of a car outside. In other words, I did their job for them, but they took his money anyway.\n\nI sat back down and tried to wrap up my evening's work. After about ten minutes, the police walked in. Four of them.\n\nOne of them approached Josh and asked if he had some ID. You could see his body language change immediately. This came totally out of the blue to him. He was just eating his damn McMuffin, watching Drew Carey hand out cash prizes, and up walks a group of Men In Uniform to Interrogate Him. Who wouldn't be distraught?\n\n\"N...no\" he stuttered (and I immediately thought of Billy Bibbet from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest). \"I don't have my ID.\"\n\n\"What's your name?\"\n\n\"Josh (something, I couldn't make out his last name).\"\n\n\"Well Josh, do you have a home?\"\n\n\"Yes.\" Really? I was flabbergasted again. For weeks I'd assumed Josh was homeless. But then I find out he not only drives, but has a home. Wow. \n\n\"Josh,\" the cop continued, \"do you realize you have a restraining order against you?\"\n\n\"No, no I don't....I've talked to the managers here, they're cool with me...\"\n\nThe cop continued on, using the modulated voice of an interrogator--not unlike the guy from Venus I mentioned above...and not unlike Nurse Ratched, actually--and he continued to grill Josh, who was visibly shaking and obviously distressed. \n\n\"I don't have a restraining order!\" he insisted.\n\n\"He does,\" another cop chimed in.\n\n\"My partner says you do Josh.\"\n\n\"Well I don't know anything about it. You can't do this.\"\n\n\"Yes we can Josh. I was told you have a restraining order and you've come back here anyway. Why shouldn't I take you to jail?\"\n\nNow Josh was about to lose it. \"This is illegal! You can't do this!\" His voice had moved up a few octaves, and sweat was starting to bead up on his forehead.\n\n\"Josh it's not advisable to resist.\"\n\n\"I'm NOT RESISTING!\"\n\nWell that was all I could take. I jumped up and got between the cops and Josh: \"Josh, don't do this,\" I pleaded, trying to remain as calm as I could to offset his obvious panic. \"You won't win, just walk away. Please.\"\n\nHe never even made eye contact with me. He was too agitated by this time. And then the piglet intervened.\n\n\"Sir I'm only going to ask you once to sit down.\" \n\nI gave him a glance and looked back at Josh. \"Please Josh, please.\" Then I sat down.\n\nA few minutes later they had Josh in handcuffs. He was still protesting that they \"couldn't do this\", and that it was \"illegal\". That's the last I saw of him.\n\nI packed up my laptop and headed to the door. The manager on duty--the one who called the cops on Josh--called out to me in a chipper voice: \"All finished?\"\n\n\"Fuck yeah I'm finished.\" Her smile froze. She had never seen this side of me, obviously. \n\nI was livid, too distraught to manage the speech in my head I would've liked to deliver. But I did manage this:\n\n\"Did you ever see To Kill A Mockingbird?\" I asked. She didn't respond, just stood there frozen looking at me, probably wondering if she was going to have to call the cops again. \"Remember the character Boo Radley? He was the gentle simpleton who everyone was scared of and taunted, even though he was actually harmless and kindhearted. Remember? Yeah, well, you just called a group of violent criminals out to harass and kidnap Boo Radley. Congratu-fucking-lations.\"\n\nIt was lame, but I guess it will have to do. I'm not going back. There are plenty of places with WiFi. And with better food as well. And better people",

titleAn Individualist Social Contract
body![Against the flow.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaWXxLhe3XB6iDYiBUj5uXiFeLAkQZcksV6LCdsKdZqG9/Against%20the%20flow.jpg) I am not a demographic. I am not a constituent. I am not my race or my sex or my age or my religion. I am not a liberal or a conservative, a Democrat or a Republican, a Protestant or Catholic or Muslim or Jehovah's Witness. I am an Individualist. I embody what Karl Hess called "the smallest minority of all: the minority of one." I am a member of what Ayn Rand referred to as "the irreducible political primary: the individual." Yes, I am an anarchist and an atheist, but those terms don't really describe who I am. Those are negative signifiers: they only describe what I'm not. I've referred to myself as a voluntarist and a humanist, and that's accurate; however, I am primarily an individualist. That description encompasses all the others. Since I am an individualist, I am an advocate of human rights. I already stand for the rights of women against repression, of people of color against institutionalized racism, of members of the LGBT community against legalized discrimination, of pot smokers against the police, of purveyors of dangerous ideas against the censors, of peaceniks against the military industrial complex, of anyone against the state. Individualism identifies with and stands in solidarity with all these battles against the common enemy, which is authoritarian collectivism. Activism is a personal decision, and of arguable merit, but shouldn't be something that divides us. Whether one chooses to specialize in civil rights activism or libertarian activism or LGBT activism, it shouldn't negate the fact that we're all fighting for individual human rights. If it does, then you're not really. You're fighting for group rights, which puts you in the collectivist camp. Collectivism is the antipode of individualism, the barbaric descendent of primitive tribalism, the philosophy that individuals are useless outside of their service to the collective (which is often called the Nation, the Society, the Common Good). Collectivism requires individuals be labeled, categorized, and subverted into groups, which can then be pitted against each other, a technique which makes each group easier to manipulate, and control. All people are individuals, but all individuals are not individualists. This leaves them susceptible to manipulative ideologies which promote lofty ideals but demand subservience and submission. Once they subvert their individualism to this ideology of control, they adopt it for themselves as proper and necessary. It is neither. There is a disturbing element in American society that accepts the belief that some people should have the right to dictate to others what to think and do and say. This element is unified in this belief even when they disagree with others. Whether they call themselves Values Voters or Social Justice Warriors, it is essentially the same. They are anti-individualist, they are anti-human. They are totalitarian. These people are doing the bidding of their controllers, willingly conforming to the needs and dictates of the establishment. These are the teachers and preachers and cops, the "universal soldiers", the ground troops of compliance all authoritarian regimes--whether they call themselves "People's Republics" or "Participatory Democracies"-- need to accomplish their hegemony. To do this, they must blot out any inclination toward individuation that grates against the needs of the collective. And Individualism, the philosophy, is particularly denounced. This is why there is the move to categorize, to label, to segment. People will subvert their identity willingly to a culture, or race, or religion, before they will to a state. And when people start to think of themselves as their race or religion, they think of themselves as constituents, and they no longer address the authorities as individuals but as members of a group that needs to beseech the state for favors, or power, or mercy. And the state is more than willing to divvy out small increments of favor to their constituents, in return for their submission. Because pitting white against black, Christian against Muslim, makes them easier to corral, easier to herd. And, if necessary, slaughter. But we aren't all white or black. We aren't all Christians or Muslims. We aren't all straight or gay or transgender. We aren't all members of the dominant culture, nor are we all members of any significant single minority. But we are all human beings; we are all individuals. This is the only thing that "unites" us. This is the only "we" that works universally. This doesn't mean "we" have to be alone. "We" rarely ever are. Humans are social beings, we enjoy and voluntarily seek out companionship and cooperation with others. This is perfectly natural, it doesn't need to be forced. The force is what is unnatural. Voluntarism is the only social structure designed by all of us, for all of us, and the only one congruent with human nature. It posits the primacy of individual choice as the fundamental foundation for civilized society. Every individual who adopts the voluntarist perspective changes their relationship to society at large. They become. They increase their sphere of freedom. They've transformed their entire worldview--and hence their world--from one of slavery and boundaries to one of freedom and limitless possibility. And if they have a libertarian streak they will share this new world view with their friends and family. And that in turn will transform their world, and worlds beyond, exponentially. Freedom of choice is the fundamental tenant of Voluntarism. I defy being labeled by outsiders not because their labels are inaccurate but because I choose to identify by my choices. Our identity is not assigned to us by authorities based on circumstances of our birth, but by our actions, by our behavior, by what we choose to do every minute of every hour of every day. This is who we are. I am an individualist. This is my social contract. It is unilateral. It is not negotiable. ***Deal with it***. Thanks for reading! Check out my homepage at Voluntarist.me. Those are negative signifiers: they only describe what I'm not. I've referred to myself as a voluntarist and a humanist, and that's accurate; however, I am primarily an individualist. That description encompasses all the others.\n\nSince I am an individualist, I am an advocate of human rights. I already stand for the rights of women against repression, of people of color against institutionalized racism, of members of the LGBT community against legalized discrimination, of pot smokers against the police, of purveyors of dangerous ideas against the censors, of peaceniks against the military industrial complex, of anyone against the state. Individualism identifies with and stands in solidarity with all these battles against the common enemy, which is authoritarian collectivism.\n\nActivism is a personal decision, and of arguable merit, but shouldn't be something that divides us. Whether one chooses to specialize in civil rights activism or libertarian activism or LGBT activism, it shouldn't negate the fact that we're all fighting for individual human rights. If it does, then you're not really. You're fighting for group rights, which puts you in the collectivist camp.\n\nCollectivism is the antipode of individualism, the barbaric descendent of primitive tribalism, the philosophy that individuals are useless outside of their service to the collective (which is often called the Nation, the Society, the Common Good). Collectivism requires individuals be labeled, categorized, and subverted into groups, which can then be pitted against each other, a technique which makes each group easier to manipulate, and control.\n\nAll people are individuals, but all individuals are not individualists. This leaves them susceptible to manipulative ideologies which promote lofty ideals but demand subservience and submission. Once they subvert their individualism to this ideology of control, they adopt it for themselves as proper and necessary. It is neither.\n\nThere is a disturbing element in American society that accepts the belief that some people should have the right to dictate to others what to think and do and say. This element is unified in this belief even when they disagree with others. Whether they call themselves Values Voters or Social Justice Warriors, it is essentially the same. They are anti-individualist, they are anti-human. They are totalitarian.\n\nThese people are doing the bidding of their controllers, willingly conforming to the needs and dictates of the establishment.
